Luminary: Art | Tech | Music
The Midway is interested in more than just nightlife — they're interested in all of its elements. That includes expanding ideas of audio and visual delights and that is just what Luminary intends to showcase in a special night. The event is focused on an immersive live experience that encompasses art and sound and emerging technologies. It is these ideals that The Midway focuses on, and thus the event features many of the in-house features of the expansive space. The Midway's resident artists will make an appearance with a projection mapped art piece by resident artists Can Buyukberber and Yagmur Uyanik. Yes, it's true, in the annals of the large warehouse there are artists toiling and this is one of the first opportunities for The Midway to unveil their mission in creating the seemingly natural merge between nightlife and artistic pursuits. Similarly, the night will feature an early preview of The Midway's extensive installation of Envelope sound, a 3-D sound room or spatial audio — something only heard to understand. Music in the sound room will come from local delights like Mark Slee as well as other local sound artists like Christopher Willits and more. There will also be special exhibits from the Flying Robots International Film Festival, Britelite Immersive, VR from Nature/Unnature, and The Moshi Project from Hip Hop and Code. We don't know exactly what they are either but the allure is grand. To really round it out, the Gods & Monsters room will feature good old As You Like It doing what they do best: having a dance party. The future is here. Date: Sat, March 18, Time: 7pm-2am Place: The Midway, Cover: $25-85, More Info (ML)

Event: Group Rhoda
Venue: Elbo Room
Artists: Group Rhoda, Cost/Worth, Terror Apart, Ssleeping Desiress, Identity Theft
Music: dark wave, industrial, coldwave, post-punk
Cover: $8
The Elbo Room has been subtly becoming the go-to place for any and all dark wave sounds — especially of the live variety and especially on typically more, shall we say, conservative nights. The sound is redolent of late 80s Berlin or Manchester when punk met electro and goth culture was beginning to emerge and now it still is, only this time in San Francisco. The night features four groups, three from San Francisco and one (Terror Apart) from Portland. The event seems to be held by Ssleeping Desiress, a local group, although all bands emanate a theme of dystopia and an industrial frisson, themes all too real in current times, and all with sounds whose dissonance match our own internal debates. Be glad we're still making this in SF. (ML)

Event: Housepitality
Venue: F8
DJs: John Howard, Sean Murray, Michael Tello, SammyD
Music: house (minimal, funky, tribal, acid), techno, disco
Cover: no cover b4 10pm w/RSVP, $5 presale on RA, $10 otherwise

Housepitality is back this week with another epic lineup. First up is John Howard, a DJ who got his start in 1993, which is when SF was having our Summer of Love. He always keeps things funky, all the time. Up next is Sean Murray, another staple from the 90s. Raised in a time where outdoor parties or nightly renegades were all the rage, you'd be hard pressed not to find Sean throwing down his Detroit infused techno soul. Michael Tello is next up, a DJ who at a young age was exposed to all kinds of music, which shaped his musical path. He's the cofounder of this wonderful Wednesday soiree and he's part of the band Pillowtalk, with Ryan Williams and Sammy D. And speaking of Sammy D, he's holding it down in the lounge this week. A member of the crew, Kontrol, Sammy D puts a funky, more soulful spin to his sets. He's cemented his place in the underground world and is ready to take on the rest of the world with his band, Pillowtalk. (CQ)

Event: Make It Funky/Spin The Night Fundraiser
Venue: Pop's Bar
DJs: Jimmy B, Jesse Sizmo, Onemohit
Music: tech-house, deep house, minimal
Cover: $10 minimum donation

Pop's Bar is a small bar in the Mission with a small dancefloor that hosts hipster Mission-ites as well as late night and early morning drinkers (it opens regularly at 6am for hospital workers and benders). They've also been hosting dance music nights with a number of favorites and tonight they're hosting none other than Jimmy B. Jimmy is a column in the palace that is SF nightlife, a man who not only believes in great parties but also throws them and turns any old party into a full on dance rager when he plays his always body movin' grooves. A man always on the move — and always one to follow — he's playing at Pop's, alongside friend and colleague Jesse Sizmo of Lips & Rhythm, to lend support to a number of causes that we all hold dear. Your donation to the night gets you tunes as well as a donation to the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and The Sierra Club. Dancing with purpose always feels right. (ML)

Tonight is a special chance to see them cultivate their shared passion for a variety of sounds and the love of dance at Madrone Art Bar. Disco and house are the name of the game at this Divis party and so these two will be digging into their crates and boucing off each other to delight a crowd celebrating the brightest of dance musics with synthy accents. There is so much bass that you can feel the music as you up to the door. Which is why Stamina is the perfect night to host The World of Drum and Bass tour, except this time, Stamina's going BIG. It's the XL version, where, in addtion to the regular sermon on Sundays, there'll be a larger, much crazier night at 1015 on a Thursday. And with DJs and producers Drumsound & Bassline Smith, SS and Brookes Brothers on the lineup, you know it's about to go down. Join these guys and more at 1015 for a night of driving basslines and pulsating beats. (CQ)

Venue: Monarch
DJs: Perc, Surface Tension residents
Music: techno
Cover: $15-20
An extended set from Perc, what else would you expect from a combo of Parameter and Surface Tension, fans of all things techno and industrial and not melodic at all unless you look for it. Perc himself is a man who inspires those with a dark side. Perc himself is a man at the head of UK techno, leader of Perc Trax, whose contributions have essentially marked the otherwise historical, albeit house heavy, nation with a dose of blistering electronic sounds that befit dark cement walls and black-on-black Converse. His sound is insane, blistering, biting, loud and unforgiving. His inspirees include many of our own techno luminaries and his last appearance at the regrettably deceased 222 Hyde was something of legend. If you like it hard, loud, fast, intense, and informed, this is the night for you. (ML)

Raised in Detroit and now based in Venice Beach, Barclay Crenshaw created the quirky alias "Claude VonStroke" in 2005 and went on to become one of the most well-respected label owners (Dirtybird & Mothership) and DJs in dance music. In this day and age of music cross-pollination, Claude VonStroke sits at the forefront of all that is good, proper, and most importantly, fun. He's just as at home remixing Kenny Larkin or Rihanna as he is dropping multiple underground hits. DJ-wise, his relentless touring of every major city, festival and, basement after-party around the world has only enriched this unique perspective on music. Today, his labels continue to surprise and innovate in the underground dance scene, releasing an enigmatic combination of house, funk, dirty-bass, and electronica. With countless hit originals and remixes, worldwide sold-out tours, and two Grammy nominations under their belts, producers/DJs Christian Karlsson and Linus Eklöw of Galantis are on a roll and show no signs of slowing down in 2017. The story of Galantis started back in 2009. Working as Bloodshy, Karlsson's songwriting collaborations included Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry and Britney Spears (whose "Toxic" earned him a Grammy award), but only reached out to Eklöw (as Style of Eye, who produced Icona Pop's hit single "I Love It") to remix "Animal," a single from Karlsson's band Miike Snow. Shortly after, the two started hanging out, playing each other songs and sharing bits of ideas in the recording studio. Galantis has truly been a phenomenon in dance music. With a synergy yet unrivaled by any Dance artist, the duo's inspirational sound and riveting on-stage performance will continue to resonate with fans worldwide.

They were well received by DJs in the NY club scene. Their sound blended different styles within dance music, which was unique at the time. Thanks to the influence of NY House DJs & veteran producers, such as Masters at Work, Mood II Swing also started remixing songs for major label & indie recording artists. Currently, in the post millennium, with a resurgence of early 90's House music, John Ciafone and Lem Springsteen have rejoined as a production team to showcase their music in DJ sets.
