SF 19th IndieFest
Indiefest can now drink in Canada. For their 19th anniversary they are once again bringing a variety of films from America, Canada, from those known and those virtually unheard of. All we know is that it all will be independent and whimsically programmed. The festival is more than just a series of films at venues like the Brava Theater, the Roxie Theater, Alamo Drafthouse, and the 518 Gallery — it is also a raucous series of parties ranging from a goth night at the Cat Club (Friday, February 3), a drink with filmmakers at the Bad Art Gallery (where we all remember what Valencia used to be), and the traditional Big Lebowski done Rocky Horror-style while audiences dress up in robes and drink white Russians. Special this year is local producers Renzo Gorrio (IDP) and Marky Ray (Brass Tax) doing a live score to a black-and-white version of Mad Max: Fury Road. The centerpiece film, Desire Will Set You Free (Roxie, Feb 10, 11) tells the story of two revelers meeting at a Berlin techno party and discovering the city one legendary spot at a time. There is certainly something for everyone and a new film or party or person to discover at every turn. Date: February 2-16, Time: various, Place: Roxie Theater, Brava Theater, Alamo Drafthouse, Cat Club, and more, Cover: various, some free, More Info (ML)

Berlin and Beyond Film Festival
If there is one thing that the techno community knows about their scene and their music is that it owes a helluva lot to the past 30 years in Germany and Berlin in particular. This year, in the 21st Berlin and Beyond Film Festival, over 30 films from German speaking countries will be featured at this year's festival. Opening night film "Scrappin'" tells the story of the little-discussed scrap dealers. The film stars Frederick Lau who was also in last year's Victoria, a future classic for anyone with a penchant for the most perfect cinematic rave scene. The festival also features a Swiss Spotlight and a closing night film by German director and writer Doris Dörrie, "Fukushima Mon Amour". If you wake up early on Sunday you can see a remake of the classic film Heidi and watch the story of a Berlin hipster in "Too Hard to Handle". Oh, and there will be sausages. And beer. And you can come chat with Germans and German enthusiasts so you have a solid phrase for when you're staring at Sven at the Berghain door. Date: Feb 3-8, Time: various, Place: Castro Theater, Goethe Institute, Cover: varied, More Info (ML)

Event: Housepitality
Venue: F8
DJs: Acidman, Jackfruit, Mike Bee
Music: house (Chicago, tech, disco, acid)
Cover: no cover b4 10pm w/RSVP, $5 presale on RA, $10 otherwise

If you're a fan of Chicago house, then Housepitality is the place to be this Wednesday. Taking over the housepit is legend Acidman, a DJ who knows a thing or two about house beats. He grew up listening to the best and playing alongside them, and is now considered one of them. In 1998, he co-created Shadefree PRDS, which became one of Chicago's largest rave production crews, as well as served as one of the resident DJs. Because of that, he's played legendary clubs and became a household name throughout Chicago and the Midwest. He stays true to his style of Chicago house, but don't be surprised if his sets take you on a journey of tech, disco and of course acid house. Joining him in the housepit will be Jackfruit, while Mike Bee holds it down in the lounge. (CQ)

Event: Reptile Society presents - The Lovers Ball w/ R. Fentz
Venue: Monarch
DJs: R. Fentz, Anderson Chase, Britton
Music: acid house
Cover: $10-15 presale
R. Fentz is the new musical project by Zack Yakovlev. Originally from Russia and living in the United States for most of his life, it is the last 10 years in San Francisco that has truly shaped his musical views, artistic spirit, and his quest in life. Alone, and as part of his alias Bells & Whistles. Whether outside on a sunny day, or a barely lit room underground, he has gained a reputation for being able to always play the right music, at the right time. Anderson Chase lives and creates within the dynamic cultural mosaic of San Francisco, California. His music is a creative expression relating the tumultuous churning currents of a modern American diaspora seeking shelter from the alienating forces of a hyper-capitalist society. Anderson wholeheartedly believes in the cathartic nature of steady rhythmic compositions and as such, his music is a reverential experience intended to catalyze growth through personal reflection.

Event: Atish All Night in the Loft
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Atish
Music: house (deep, melodic, tech)
Cover: $12-20
Since a long five years have passed since our beloved Atish has played an intimate, extended set in SF, he's rectifying that by taking over the Public Works loft this Friday. For those who don't know, the Atish experience is very deep and emotive, with melodic house flowing as his inviting presence captivates you. He's been known to wear costumes and wigs when he spins, balancing strict discipline of his craft with his fun-loving playful side. He's played Burning Man multiple times, fitting in well with the motley crew of folks who venture to that thing in the desert. In 2016 he launched Manjumasi Music along with longtime friend and collaborator Mark Slee, creating a quirky little label that allows fellow people to release their artistic side. For an all Atish, all night long, get to the Public Works loft on Friday. (CQ)

He's also the owner of The Social Festival, an electronic music festival that occurs in his hometown of Maidstone, Kent. Also on deck is dOP, who'll perform live, and Alvaro + Shane One holding it down in the loft. A portion of the proceeds from these events will be donated to the non-profit, Computers for Cancer, which launches soon. Event: Heist Recordings Showcase w/ Detroit Swindle
Venue: Halcyon
DJs: Detroit Swindle, Adesse Versions, Nachtbraker
Music: tech-house
Cover: no cover b4 11pm w/ RSVP, otherwise $10-20
Newest venue Halcyon is at it again with another great lineup of great artists in this space with serious underground vibes. The event features three of Heist's artists including their crown jewel and label creators, Detroit Swindle, in what will be the label's first showcase in the city. Detroit Swindle, i.e. Dutchmen Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets, began after they both met on a more mainstream DJ circuit in Amsterdam. After discovering their mutual love for hip-hop, motown, and the sweet, sweet combination of it all as underground house music, they decided to join forces and earned popular and critical acclaim with their 2014 album Boxed Out. They started Heist Recordings and signed on artists like co-headers Adesse Versions, who have previously released on lables such as Ostgut Ton and Cocoon. Rounding out the evening is fellow label mate Nachtbraker, a former writer and artist with a wide reaching sound. Enjoy the showcase and enjoy the show. (ML)

Event: Polyglamorous 2 Year Anniversary
Venue: Oasis
DJs: Vin Soul, The Synth Tigers
Music: disco, house, new wave
Cover: $7-10
It's Friday which means it's time for another queer dance party. Ha ha ha… but seriously, it's time to celebrate the two year anniversary of a party that has been known to have serious underground feels, sexy half-nudes, and a touch of the queer Burner brush. Tonight's celebration is headlined by Club Lonely's Vin Soul, who knows how to consistently bring it with seriously jackin' sounds. There's only two more parties at Oasis before this event makes a move to F8 in April so get it all in on 11th Street while you can. Cheers! (ML)

Event: Sharam
Venue: Mezzanine
DJs: Sharam (extended set), Bo
Music: tech-house
Cover: $15-20 presale
Sharam's unique production style, along with a diverse list of accomplishments in the international charts and underground realms, has solidified him as a true non-conformist and innovator in dance music – both as a solo artist and as part of the legendary group Deep Dish. His eclectic DJ sets are a journey through sound, with razor-sharp focus to quality and obsessive attention to entertaining both purists and the unassuming. In Sharam's mind, dance music is meant for everyone, and forward motion is only possible through cross-pollination of styles. Driving home this point is his list of his collaborators, which includes names like Chris Martin of Coldplay, Kid Cudi, Shakira, and P. Diddy, to name just a few. When he's not on the road or in the studio, Sharam is helming his record label Yoshitoshi, proving that after 20 years, the classic label is a taste making force for the ages.

Event: Fehrplay
Venue: Audio
DJs: Fehrplay, Chad Bays, Lazer Beahm
Music: progressive house, tech-house
Cover: $10 presale
What do Billboard and the sleepless city of New York hold in common? For one, they have all bowed to the uplifting talents of Norwegian breakout Fehrplay. With his name cemented to the lifeblood of progressive house and the global club circuit adding to his 360-degree explosion. Never one to talk down his Norwegian roots, the life and times of Jonas Fehr have not been limited to one global locality. Taking to the dance mecca that is Manchester as a student, the young producer quickly found solstice in the city's underground nightspots. A concoction of cinematic scores and melodic composure, his lust to evoke emotion in a coherent manner for the club floor has made this a tough sound to box, but one that continues to thrill amid the cookie cutter generation. With an ethos that a good melody and poignant groove can reign indestructible, the journey from 2012's 'Incognito' to 'I Can't Stop,' 'Phantom' and the deep and melodic 'Monte' has kept fans and industry tastemakers in awe. From outspoken euphoria to cuts from the playbooks of deep house and techno, his studio repertoire to date plays with unlimited calibre.

This Saturday, we're going to Repopulate Mars, ya'll. Repopulate Mars is the new label launched by Lee Foss which stems from his popular party series of the same name. The focus of this label will embody the same 'out-of-this-world' intergalactic theme as his parties had. The first release of the label was the three-track EP Repopulation, and was teased as alien funk. Foss' innovation and contribution to the underground house and techno scene will definitely play well into this label. He, along with some special guests, will be throwing down spacey tunes so funky, they really might succeed in repopulating Mars! For a truly extraterrestrial experience, join Lee Foss and friends and Repopulate Mars. (CQ)

Event: Sunset Sound Get Down w/ Maurice Fulton & Galen
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Maurice Fulton, Galen
Music: house
Cover: $10 presale
Maurice Fulton is one of house music's true originals, an eccentric ex-pat American (currently living in Melbourne) DJ and producer who never fails to surprise and delight his listeners. His first album since the leftfield Stories Of A Broken Heart And Recovering which he recorded as Ladyvipb (for Nuphonic) is an altogether more accessible and dancefloor friendly affair... Maurice Fulton has been round the block in more ways than one, not only did he have a hand in producing Gypsy Woman by Crystal Waters, one of the most successful house tunes of the early '90s; he is the darling of both the underground house and leftfield scenes with an enviable back catalogue. Galen and his fellow cohorts of Pacificsound, now known as Sunset Sound System, have thrown down hundreds of the now legendary Sunset Parties. Although Galen can been defined as a San Francisco DJ staple, traveling has landed him guest slots at events throughout the United States and internationally. His dj sets reflect not only a synchronous relationship with electronic compositions but also a profound knowledge and appreciation of genres such as: funk, soul, jazz, rare-groove and hip-hop.His mixing ability enables him to smoothly and effortlessly flow between styles within a single set.
