Human Be-In 50th Anniversary
This Saturday is the 50th Anniversary celebration of the first Human Be-In and Rededication to the values of the 60's: peace, love, community and activism. This multimedia event is produced by Unity Foundation, in association with Digital Be-In and will feature speakers, exhibits, live music, DJs, visuals and a multi-generational community. There'll be a performance by the 1960's Allstar Band, which features musicians from legendary SF bands such as Big Brother and the Holding Company, Country Joe and the Fish, The Blues Project, Sons of Champlin, Electric Flag, Stoneground and The Youngbloods, playing together for Jam for Peace. In case you haven't yet guessed, that performance is a once-in-a-lifetime event, so don't miss it. There'll also be a dance party hosted by world fusion band House of Hamsa, and DJs Andreilien and Feral, each throwing down funky beats. Special video messages of peace, featuring Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Kenny Loggins, Michelle Phillips, Peter Coyote, Jane Goodalll and many more, will also be shown, in addition to the beat poetry readings and appearances by activits, social change leaders and tech visionaries. Historic film footage of the 1967 Human Be-In and Summer of Love will also be shown, and there will be a visual light show and exihibits by Stefan G and Dr. Paradise. Come be apart of history while reflecting on how far we've come since the first Human Be-In 50 years ago. Date: Jan 14, Time: 7pm-2am, Place: Gray Area Art + Technology Grand Theater 2665 Mission St SF, Cover: $20, More Info (CQ)

Dan Savage HUMPfest
Every year Dan Savage hosts HUMPFest, a travelling amater film festival/competition. What's special? Well, this is Dan Savage, sex expert extraordinaire. The festival features, well, sex, from anyone and everyone who wanted to show off their kinks, their desires, or just film themselves in the act. It's kind of like porn but its also kind of like cinema. It'll make you laugh but it'll also make you horny. You'll see sex as it really is — not some misogynistic fantasy of a white guy in the 80s (because all porn seems somehow steeped in the 80s). With an array of body types, genders, sexualities, and ages, there's something for everyone and a little bit of everyone on view. It's real, it's great, and it's here. Date: January 11-14, Time: 5pm, 7pm, 9:15pm, 11:30pm, Place: Victoria Theater, Cover: $25, More Info (ML)

Event: Housepitality Sunset Winter Solstice
Venue: F8
DJs: Hieroglyphic Being, Tyrel Williams, The Present Elders
Music: house, EBM, 'outsider house', industrial, avant-garde
Cover: no cover b4 10pm w/RSVP, $5 presale on RA, $10 otherwise

Housepitality welcomes Hieroglyphic Being to the housepit this week. Producer and head of label Mathematics Records, Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, hails from Chicago and is always pushing the musical envelope. He's drawn inspiration from electronic body music (aka EBM), which combines elements of industrial and electronic music, as well as the talented Ron Hardy and Adonis, to create his own genre. Known as Outsider House, or as he likes to call it, Rhythmic Cubism or Cosmic Bebop, his intense psychedelic music straddles the line between house and the avant garde. Holding it down in the lounge are The Present Elders, a duo consisting of brothers who don't adhere to labels when it comes to their music. Rounding out the lineup is Tyrel Williams, so come get your house fix at Housepitality. (CQ)

Event: Bodyshock SF
Venue: Elbo Room
DJs: Inhalt, Soft Metals, Russell Butler, DJ Crxckwhxre
Music: dark wave, post punk
Cover: $10 presale, $12 door
Inhalt is a duo of European natives who formed this group right here in San Francisco. Although reminiscent of German sounds of the Neue Deutsche Welle and 80s-style dark wave, the duo seeks to look forward with their music rather than focus on nostalgia for times past. Influences range from Kraftwerk to John Carpenter and the sounds are utterly danceable in that New Order kind of way. With releases on labels such as SF's Dark Entries, they bring a sound to San Francisco that is bred from Europe but come to fruition here. What better way to go with the rain? (ML)

Event: You're Welcome w/ Patricio
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Patricio, Martin Aquino, Benjamin K b2b Paton
Music: house, tech-house
Cover: $10-15 presale
The energy level always rises when Patricio steps behind the tables. Drawing on the passion and soul instilled in him growing up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Patricio will make you dance with no holds barred. From Argentina to Japan, he has rocked dancefloors with djs like Stanton Warriors, Koma and Bones, Lee Burridge, Thievery Corporation, Layo and Bushwacka just to name a few, and rattled a few bass bins in festivals like Coachella, Nocturnal, and many more. Originally hailing from Manila, Philippines and now firmly rooted in San Francisco, Martin Aquino is an exciting new name on the scene who is making waves with his underground, deep tech-house sound. Martin's production, while riding the border between house and techno, keeps a leg deep in the sound of the underground. He strives for music that is organic and eclectic while still rawly effective in the nightclub.

Event: &ME and Adam Port
Venue: Public Works
DJs: &ME, Adam Port, Lee Jones
Music: techno, house, tech-house
Cover: $18 presale
When one could assume, &ME entered the House and Techno world somewhat out of the blue, it is due to his sublime modesty that's already captured in his alias. Coming from Hamburg to Berlin in 2004 his talent was soon recognized by folks like DJ Hell or DJ T. who hired him as their co-producer. As soon as he dropped his first solo productions, he finally made himself a name in a quite unparalleled way. "F.I.R." – his first release on keinemusik, a collective of Berlin based DJs and producers, he helped founding in 2009, was a massive clubhit, but in the end not much more than a foretaste of things to come. Adam Port's emphasis on Dub, Danchall, Rap, Soul or even Psychedelic Rock, is advanced enough to always shine through the inflationary characteristic of the genre as notably original. That applies to both, his productions and his DJ-sets. What Adam Port is laying his hands on might have its place within the parameters of House and Techno, but it's always more than that. It's his style.

Event: SET with Super Flu

Cover: no cover b4 11 w/RSVP, $10 presale
SET returns this Friday with Super Flu and Antony B. Now I know what you're thinking, Super Flu sounds like some kind of sickness of which no one wants a part. But in reality, that's name that Tinitus Part (Feliks Thielemann) and Mathias Schwartz chose for their deep/tech house duo. Super Flu strives to connect traditional with modern electronic, creating pulsating songs full of emotion. They create acoustic art that takes their music to another level, but in the end, it's just techno with a little flair. Also on deck is Antony B, a house DJ who keeps it old school by always performing with vinyl. If you're still looking for something to do this Friday, come get SET with Super Flu at Halcyon. (CQ)

Event: Oliver Koletzki
Venue: Halcyon
DJs: Oliver Koletzki (DJ set), Pedro Arbulu, Jill McDonald, Mattias Link
Music: techno
Cover: $15
Fifteen years ago, Eminem once famously rapped "Nobody listens to techno." We here in the bay know how wrong he was (and still is), since techno events happen often and usually with a large number of attendees. This weekend is no different. Modular presents Oliver Koletzki, a Berlin-based producer, DJ and label owner who's created more than his fair share of techno classics. His underground hit, "Der Mückenschwarm", became the best selling techno record of 2005. It was also the best selling record of the label Cocoon, which itself is known as the techno empire of label. In addition to all this, he was voted best newcomer of the year in Groove magazine, yet this wasn't his first foray into music making. Since he was 12 years old, he's been fascinated by music production, and even began producing hip-hop beats on his Commodore 64! That's dedication right there. Rounding out the lineup are Pedro Arbulu, Jill McDonald and Mattias Link, each throwing down their signature flair. (CQ)

Event: Raresh & DoubtingThomas Live
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Raresh (a:rpia:r Romania), DoubtingThomas (live), Petko Nikolov
Music: house, jazz
Cover: $17 presale
Raresh launched alongside Rhadoo and Pedro the [a:rpia:r] label, whose activity brought each one their well-deserved place in the top of the clubbing hierarchy, becoming one of the most loved and appreciated Romanian djs. With constant gigs all over the world, a strong label, forward releases, two accomplices to ratify the ping-pong – back to back in three – Raresh has proved, no doubt, what a complete dj means and now enjoys all the support and admiration of the electronic music scene lovers. DoubtingThomas' sound has always drawn upon wider influences than cookie-cutter dancefloor music, reaching to jazz and musique concrete to find textures that challenge in between the rhythms, and so it is that his distinctive live set has become his calling card in recent times.

Event: Salted
Venue: The Great Northern
DJs: Andrew Phelan, Jayvi Velasco, Miguel Migs, Julius Papp
Music: house
Cover: $10-20
Salted, the SF dance institution and music label is out with their first foray in 2017. To start the year off right they're doing a Local Love series featuring Andrew Phelan, famous from Prismatic and a longtime champion of San Francisco after moving here from Chicago in 2001. Raised on the underground sound of his hometown he has been a warehouse staple here in SF and will be joined after hours legend Jayvi Velasco. Of course the Salted DJs Miguel Migs and Julius Papp will be behind the decks. Sweet is good but tonight we like it salty. (ML)

Event: Honey Soundsystem MLK Sunday
Venue: Folsom Street Foundry
DJs: Keenan Orr
Music: house
Cover: $20
It's been a bit of a hiatus and we have all noticed. Thankfully, Honey is back and we are all ready for a big ol' dance. They're bringing it in with the real house vibes from DC artist Keenan Orr. This understated artist seems to have merely two mixes to his name on Soundcloud and no other media page to speak of but his sounds come deep from the DC underground where he is as integral a part of their scene as some of our local heros. Honey is also giving us another treat for 2017: a brand new venue. In the heart of SOMA the Folsom Street Foundry is ready for you to wear in the dance floor. There's some serious sh*t (not to mention a storm) out there, so dancing to some upbeat house is just what the doctor ordered. Honey never tasted so sweet. (ML)

Event: SET w/ Guy J
Venue: Halcyon
DJs: Guy J, Darren Grayson, Leyl Master Black, Zita Molnar
Music: progressive, house, techno, tech-house
Cover: $10-15
With origins from the heart, Guy J's sculptures of melody have developed a soul and a prolific life of their own. On the path to becoming one of the premier artists of this electronic generation, Guy J has amassed a vast discography showcased within an eclectic list of world-renowned labels. His disregard for boundaries has catapulted his genre-diverse Lost & Found imprint into one of the most highly regarded brands in the underground. And Guy J live and studio mixes are beloved by house, trance and techno enthusiasts en masse. Naturally Guy's early influences were rooted in his home town of Tel Aviv and the worlds of psy-trance and progressive. But it wasn't long before he embraced all genres to establish the wide-ranging production style that represents the array of emotions fueling his creativity.
