SF International Film Festival
This Thursday marks the opening night of San Francisco's most glamorous night of cinema: the opening of the San Francisco International Film Festival. Now in its 59th year, the festival spans over 15 days and will be showing over 150 films from around the world and from some of the world's most acclaimed filmmakers. In attendance will be Oscar winner, Tom McCarthy, Ellen Burstyn in tandem with a special screening of the harrowing classic, Requiem For A Dream, Indian-American author Mira Nair, and an afternoon with Aardman Studios (Wallace & Grommit) — just to name a few. Of course, a festival of this caliber would not be complete without some musical accompaniment and SFIFF does not shirk its responsibilities in this category. The highlight of the musical program is Simon Taymonde of the Cocteau Twins and psych-pop band Mercury Rev accompanying Carl Dreyer's classic 1932 horror film, Vampyr, with live music at the Castro Theater on May 2. Musically themed filmes include As I Open My Eyes, about underground nightlife in Tunisia, Morris From America, which tells the story of an American uprooted to Heidlberg, Germany (and who finds his way to at least one techno party), David Byrne/St.Vincent/tUnE-yArDs/Zola Jesus concert film, Contemporary Color, and even the film debut of Nick Jonas for you pop lovers out there. This is only the tip of the iceberg for excellent programming for the city's top international festival. Check out the full program here and see you at the movies! Date: April 21-May 5, Time: Various, Place: Alamo Drafthouse, Roxie Theater, Castro Theater, Victoria Theater, BAMPFA, Gray Area, Cover: general admission for most films is $15, More Info (ML)

Event: Bicycle Day
Venue: 1015 Folsom
Artists: Alex Grey & Allyson Grey, Dimond Saints, Gaudi, Michael Menert feat. Russ Liquid, The Human Experience, Sidecar Tommy, Sage Armstrong, ConRank, TekLife, Soohan, VNDMG, BOGL, Tony Inorbit, Little John, Majitope, Spekt, Nasi Banks, Ryury

Bicycle Day itself is a celebration of the famed Albert Hoffman bike ride the day he discovered Lucy in the sky with diamonds (although before the eponymous song was written). Since that date in 1943, psychonauts and cosmic hunters have been celebrating the day with play, joy, and delight — just as Hoffman would have wanted. Also a tradition is this yearly party at 1015 where denizens of resonant bass, psy, and chill music come together for a night of consciousness but also some serious dancing. There will be art from legendary mystic artists, Alex & Allyson Grey, whose fractal mysteries have been entrancing those on their journeys to understanding, love, and wisdom. Headlining will be artists from the Bay and afar, such as Oakland's own Dimond Saints, whose sound collides heavy bass and soulful melodies. In addition to the main room, there will be a room for local future bass crew Soundpieces, with the tunes of VNDMG and BOGL, among others, as well as Symbiosis room that will sonically take you to late season festival vibes the way they truly know how. Get ready to feel the same ecstasy when Albert took his infamous ride! (ML)

If you know anything about Nosaj Thing, you know this LA producer loves hip-hop. Influenced early on by Power 106 and the Beat Junkies, Nosaj has gone on to create synth based instrumental hip-hop. Reminiscent of Boards of Canada, DJ Shadow and even a bit of Danny Elfman, Nosaj work clearly honors his influences. With such a broad range of artists in LA, its no surprise that Nosaj has found his niche alongside Flying Lotus, Nobody and even local legends D-Styles and Daddy Kev, with the latter being some of his personal heroes. He's since been signed to Kev's Alpha Pup Imprint to release his full length debut, Drift. He's created beats for MCs Busdriver, Nocando and Kendrick Lamar, and remixed Flying Lotus, Daedelaus and Radiohead. His most recent release feature Chance the Rapper and Whoarei, which makes it clear that Nosaj Thing isn't slowing down anytime soon. (CQ)
