Noise Pop
Noise Pop has got to be one of the chillest and most under-the-radar music festivals this city has to offer. The festival, now in its 24th year, has proven to be a fertile breeding ground for up-and-coming independent acts. Past artists have included those you'd now be more likely to see at a big stage at Outside Lands rather than one of the intimate venues on display here. Bands like The White Stripes, The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie, and Modest Mouse are just a few of these names that have graced Noise Pop bills in years past. The lineup this year is massive in both scope and depth. Mainstream acts like Carly Rae Jepsen (is she still mainstream?!) are on the bill alongside ultimate emo-heroes American Football and dark indietronica mainstay Metric. This is truly just to name a few of the almost 150 artists playing over the course of the week. Venues range from Bender's Bar to Brick & Mortar, The Independent, The Masonic, 1015 Folsom… basically everywhere music is played, they got you! See something new, see something old and beloved. Just enjoy that this city is about to be awash in tunes. Date: Feb 19-28, Time: Varied, Place: Varied, Cover: Badge at $175-375, individual shows vary, link More Info (ML)

Prior to entering his teens Andrew was appearing in front of thousands in New York City playing percussion with amazing artists such as Dave Amram, Candido, Steve Berrios, Paquito DeRivera and childhood friend Adam Cruz. Evolving across to electronic music, in 1982 ONIONZ hands were on his first set of turntables and the rest is history releasing over 200 singles and remixes. Event: The Magician
Venue: 1015 Folsom
DJs: The Magician, Just Kiddin', MPHD
Music: house
Cover: $20-25 presale

Noisepop, DJ Dials and 1015 Folsom bring you a night full of magic. Belgium producer and DJ The Magician will be hitting the stage, throwing down those delicious house beats we all love so much. Formerly of the Baleric disco duo Aeroplane, The Magician embarked on his own magical journey in 2010. Releasing many tracks on the French label Kitsune, he struck gold with his remix of Lykke Li's "I Follow Rivers" in 2011 and then again with Clean Bandit's "Rather Be" in 2014. He has since signed on to Parlophone/Warner Records and joined the Machine Management roster, so it's clear that The Magician has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. Also on deck are Just Kiddin' and MPHD, each adding support to this bumping night. (CQ)

Music: house, techno
Cover: $20-25 presale, $30 door
For those of you missing the Desert Hearts crew, never fear, as this Friday they are back with City Hearts SF. If you attended this event last year, then you know what an epic celebration it is. Held at their favorite venue, Public Works, this event features a Desert Heart OG, UK house DJ, Jimpster. He's embarking on a US tour, so of couse, it made perfect sense to bring him out. Holding it down in the loft while the DH residents keep things jumping in the main room, Jimpster is playing an extended deep house set all night long. And if he performs like he always does, then you know this event will be vibes upon vibes upon vibes. Mikey Lion, Deep Jesus, Marbs and Porkchop are all representing through music for DH, so don't miss out on this house-heavy event. (CQ)

Event: Dirtybird Quarterly
Venue: Mezzanine
DJs: Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin, Christian Martin, J.Phlip, Worthy, Ardalan
Music: house, bass, funk
Cover: $15 b4 11pm, $20 after
'dirtybird' has been dropping basslines and creating smiles on the dance-floor since January 2005. The innovative American house music label has become synonymous with quirky ideas, bass driven funk and a crew of humble characters who like to have fun. The bird logo came from a drawing Barclay Crenshaw (aka Claude VonStroke) used to draw when he was a kid to make his little brother laugh in church. Since creating the label, VonStroke has A&R'd some of the most influential house music producers in the world. A short list includes Justin Martin, Catz 'n Dogz, Julio Bashmore, Riva Starr, Breach, Shiba San, Eats Everything, J Phlip, Killfrenzy, and many many more – most of whom had their very first records and even created their artist names on dirtybird.

Event: Xosar
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Xosar, Body Tools, Solar, Mozhgan, Jason Greer
Music: house, tech, tech-house
Cover: $10-15 presale
Xosar turned plenty of important heads early in her career. The American born, Berlin based producer's beguiling sound is a mix of unnerving atmospheres and uplifting emotions, keenly bolted onto raw house and techno tempos. Already released by globally recognized labels like Rush Hour and L.I.E.S., Xosar is adept in the live arena with her energetic and graceful laptop-free show of Korg Electribes, Kaos pads and other hardware toys. A hugely immersive and brooding affair.

Event: Sure Thing & Parameter pres. Robert Hood
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Robert Hood, Aaron J, Nick Otrando
Music: minimal techno
Cover: $18
Robert Hood is one of the earlier generation of techno heroes. In fact, he was one of the instigators of the now legendary Underground Resistance as well as the creator and label head for the inimitable M-Plant. Straight outta Detroit in the early 90s, Hood made a name for himself with releases on the labels of other Detroit stalwarts like Juan Atkins' Metroplex and Jeff Mills' Axis. His style of stripped down machine music is undeniably American and undeniably Detroit. It's headiness is certain as much as it is that Hood is not just a follower of this sound, but a leader. Presented by SF's own techno label, Sure Thing, you can be sure tonight's event will be just that for fans of this sound. (ML)

Event: The Aston Shuffle
Venue: Audio
DJs: The Aston Shuffle, Sinden, Bot
Music: house (tech, deep), electro, jungle, bass
Cover: no cover w/RSVP b4 11pm, $10 otherwise
Audio is doing Saturday right by hosting an event feature not one but THREE headliners. First up is The Aston Shuffle, a house music duo from Australia. Comprised of DJ and music producers Mikah Freeman and Vance Musgrove, they also host their own show called "Friday Night Shuffle" on ABC's Triple J. Their debut single came out on the Ministry of Sound label Hussle Records and they have since become regulars on Ministry compliations. In 2014, they released Photographs, a top 5 iTunes album and released the #1 most Shazam'd, three time Hype Machine chart topping track, "Tear it Down." I think it's safe to say they've solidified their place in music. Sinden is a DJ, remixer, producer and label boss who's established himself as one of the front-runners in the UK dance scene. Finding a love for rap music, Sinden transitioned to jungle, enjoying the 'Britishness' that the genre has to offer. Rounding out the lineup is Bot, formerly of the Crookers, who has reinvented his sound and proves once again, that Bot is of the future. (CQ)

Event: WERD w/ Bezier
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Andy Warren
Music: tech-house
Cover: $5-7
Werd is collaborating with a member of the local scene that is also rather fond of Sunday parties. Yep, that's right, Bezier of Honey Soundsystem will be doing what we're sure will be a complete overhaul of this weekend's Werd event. Bezier, also known as Robot Hustle, has helped to create a techno-heavy disco-house queer-themed party that is not only in SF but has spread around the world as what has been called "one of the most influential gay parties". This is no joke and these DJs have returned our city to the international map and have changed the gay scene in our own city as well. This is definitely due in part to the music and heart of the men at the center of the collective, one of which is Bezier. A big night at Werd! (ML)
