Nitevibe Buzz

In The Red
The Flaming Lotus Girls are some of the most bada$$ in town. Their mostly-women (men accepted too) volunteer-based group has grown from just ten members in 2001 to the nearly 100 they have today. The ladies and gents who make up the Girls collaborate to create interactive, (often) large-scale metal and fire sculptures that often play a big role on The Playa, although you might have also seen them around town over the last decade or so, especially their grand piece near The Embarcadero. Their process is as great as their outcome, encouraging co-working and collaboration and education for all who join. This Friday they'll host an art show and auction at SOMArts Center to benefit their upcoming large-scale project. Aside from the fundraising, this show is important in that it will allow you to take a piece of FLG home with you, with everything from photographs to screen prints being auctioned at the silent auction. The auction will be silent because the event will not be. The night will feature a cast of fabulous female DJs, all friends of the longtime Burning crew. Sounds will include breaks from Dulce Vita, techno from Airpusher Collective's Jessica Stanell, deep house from Leyl Master Black, and some techno from Oona X, and more. Don't forget to bring some clothes to screen print! This night has it all with some of the best guys and gals in and on the town. And who doesn't like supporting local arts!? Also a great way to rebel against the Super Bowl. Date: Friday, February 5 , Time: 7pm-2am, Place: SOMArts & Cultural Center, Cover: min. $20 donation, linkMore Info (ML)

DJs: Clarian, Bob Five, Joel Conway
Music: tech-house, cosmic
Cover: $5 on RA, free b4 10pm w/ RSVP, $10 after 10pm

Ever the experimentalist, Clarian is a Canadian-turned-Berliner who spends his summer behind the decks of legendary clubs and his summers in the production room. And good thing he does both. His cosmic sound has been lauded by dancefloors and labels alike. In fact, it seems there is not a single hot button label that he has left alone. With productions for the likes of Vision Quest, Life & Death, and My Favorite Robot (among others), he is leaving no stone unturned and no floor undanced. His affinity for science fiction explains his connection to the machines, the weird, and the unexplainable. Joining his will be other otherworldly denizens: local acts Bob Five and Joel Conway because, as usual, Housepitality's got you. (ML)

Derrick Carter makes his return to Audio on February 5th with with support from Andrew Phelan. Derrick has been widely acknowledged as one of the better DJs of the world. With innovative productions, consummate technical skills and an effortlessly joyful attitude of rocking a crowd, his impact has infiltrated throughout the spectrum of dance music. Although known as one of the key players of Chicago's '90s house music wave, he actually began DJ'ing at the age of nine, spinning disco, funk and blues records at family reunions. So naturally, he often travels outside standard club tastes, incorporating bits of disco, soul, jazz, new wave, and whatever else catches his fancy.

Event: Nu & Oceanvs Orientalis
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Nu & Oceanvs Orientalis
Music: house instrumental
Cover: $15-20
Showcasing the diverse musical sounds of Nu, joining us from Berlin, a DJ who fuses instrumentals with an electronic style truly his own. A nomad of modern times, who has travelled the continents with his music, Nu is as diverse in his musical styles as he is welltravelled. Taking influences from his various homes, the producer and trained sound engineer branched out into various genres. Through this years-long musical journey Nu then found his true calling: instrumentals amalgamated with his electronic production all held together through solid rhythms. Founded by Safak Oz Kutle, Oceanvs Orientalis is a collective formation which aims to challenge the aesthetic perception in electronic music. It may feature itself as a band or as a one-man action. It blends itself with the archaelogic tunes of mankind's cumulative musical history and in this very context believes that "everything comes from the east".

Common Ground had an epic 2015, thanks to all of you and they are ready to kick off 2016 with a bang. This Friday, they present Session Victim and Tone of Arc, both co-headling the night with rocking beats for your listening pleasure. Session Victim hails from Berlin and is a duo composed of Hauke Freer and Mattias Reiling. Surprised by the popularity gained through their bedroom-produced LP, Session Victim continues their sampling sessions and studio jam in much of the same way as before, only this time they have somewhat of a normal schedule. With a friendship spanning two decades, it's no surprise how well these two work together. Also co-headling the night is Tone of Arc, a band production featuring producer Derrick Boyd and vocalist Zoe Presnick. They've both been making music all their lives, which comes through at each show. They sing and play bass, guitar and keys, all live, creating a unique performance for each show. Joining them will be a bunch of local talent, but you have to attend to get the full lineup. (CQ)

J Rocc, Shortkut, Mr. E and Haylow each are coming through, performing music from the Dilla catalogue, the perfect way to honor this man. And this year's special guest is J Rocc, the DJ and 3rd member of the collaboration group Jaylib, which was comprised of Madlib and J Dilla. He's also thought to be the person with the deepest J Dilla catalogue, which makes him the perfect special guest. Be sure to get to Mighty early, as there's an open bar for the first hour and because this night is sure to reach capacity.
