SF New Years Roundup
Being the party-centric city that it is, it's no surprise that San Francisco is inundated with New Years events. And with so many to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming. We here are Nitevibe want to help you out with a few suggestions on where you should be when the clock strikes midnight. Want to get in touch with your burner side? Hit up The Armory for New Bohemia NYE, which features some of your favorite soundcamps like Distrikt, Opulent Temple and Pink Mammoth. In its third year, this event will titillate all your senses. Or how about The Big One at Bill Graham? With acts like The Flaming Lips, Tycho, Gramatik and more, you know The Big One will be one fun party. Too big a venue for you? Then consider Monarch for Solid Gold Jacuzzi. Attendees are encouraged to dress in gold, metallics and silver while getting down to Icelandic prog-house duo Thugf*cker. What more could you want? Our last NYE pick is Simian Mobile Disco at Public Works. The duo will perform a DJ set alongside a few of your favorites for a New Years you won't forget. If none of these tickle your fancy, then consider the Fireworks Gala on the Embarcadero at Crystal Jade, which is owned by Moet, Louis Vuitton SE and Hennessy and features incredible views of the bay. If crowds really aren't your thing but you want to see the fireworks at the Embarcadero, then come to the Crystal Jade since it sits above the Embarcadero, allowing for an unobstructed view of the Bay Bridge and water. If you're not completely dead by NYD, then hit up It's a New Day block party at Mighty. Sunset Sound System, Green Gorilla Lounge, Pink Mammoth and Monarch bring you a 21 hour celebration of the new year. And of course, no NYD would be complete without Breakfast of Champions, held at a new location this year at the Midway. Or perhaps the Blasthaus 20 Year Anniversary Party with Hot Chip and Ok GO is more your style. Lights Down Low brings you TIGA as part of their first show, while Brass Tax returns with their Supper of Survivors event, which starts early and runs late. Whatever you decide, just make it a good one and be sure to stay safe. From all of us here at Nitevibe, Happy New Year. We'll see you after our one week off. (CQ)

Event: Housepitality feat. Brett Johnson
Venue: F8
DJs: Brett Johnson, Bai-ee, Mike Bee
Music: house, techno, tech-house, acid, groove lounge vibes
Cover: $5 on RA, free b4 10pm w/ RSVP, $10 after 10pm

Housepitality surprises us this week by bringing in a purveyor of what I like to call "the new deep house". With releases on labels like Crosstown Rebels, Get Physical, Visionquest, and 20/20 Vision, it's easy to see the kind of vibe Brett goes for in his sets - a sunglasses-at-night sort of attitude that's conjured through a combination of thumping kicks, sweeping moments of breakdown, and equal doses melancholia and debauchery. On support duty is Housepitality resident Bai-ee of Secret Studio who Housepit regulars know as a relentless selector of a more old-school deep house style, garage, and straight up acid trax. In the lounge, as more often than not, is Mike Bee of course, slow jam selecting phenom and owner of Vinyl Dreams. (AO)

They're going there this year with a full-on blowout of bass, hip-hop, and r&b sounds with the legendary Flying Lotus as the headliner of a Brainfeeder-focused NYE. The man has crafted a career that belies a scene as he manages to be both sonically intellectual as well as dancefloor and club friendly. His creative sounds can be anywhere from palatable to challenging but always do they give you shivers of musical delight. Whether he's collabing with Kendrick Lamar, as on his 2015 album You're Dead! or playing for crowds at 1015 with a live A/V show, as he will be this New Year's, FlyLo always delights. When you consider all his accomplishments, it's hard to believe that you might even need anyone else on the lineup, but indeed it does deliver, with Thundercat, another Brainfeeder artist, and his smooth future r&b sounds. Don't forget the local flavor with hyphy Smasheltooth and The Pirate as well as other local dub and bass favorites like An-Ten-Nae and Trap City. Make this new year a based one. (ML)

Event: Moon Boots
Venue: Audio
DJs: Moon Boots, Bo
Music: house, tech-house
Cover: $50-65

Moon Boots entered the world in the mid-1980s via Cape Canaveral. After years of service as the preferred footwear of celebrity astronauts (notably Tom Hanks), Moon Boots came to life during a classified experiment aboard the International Space Station. Little is known of what actually transpired aboard the shuttle, but in short, Moon Boots became a sentient creature, equipped with reason, intuition, and groove. Before long, he grew tired of working for the space-military-industrial complex and found solace in the soothing sounds of underground disco and R&B boogie records. He knew it was only of matter of time before he was hung up like so many boots before him. He abandoned the program and used his savings to build a music-production studio in an unnamed U.S. location, where he is currently working.

Event: New Bohemia NYE
Venue: The Armory

Get down and dirty in the sexy halls of the Armory along with your favorite soundcamps like Distrikt, Opulent Temple, and Pink Mammoth in what has now become a local NYE tradition. Of course, all the stops will be pulled out, including Playa legends The Scumfrog and of course Opulent Temple's Syd Gris as well as Distrikt's Ben Seagren and Matt Kramer. With music on four stages, you won't even have explored half the fun by the time the clock strikes midnight, and that's just the sonic entertainment! Joining the fun will be the Vau de Vire society, bringing their subcultural circus, alongside other popular performers that you've seen at your favorite events all year, like Fou Fou Ha and more. Pleasure alongside pain; and bring in the new year bonded to everyone in debauchery and joy. (ML)

Cover: $45-60

Public Works is one of the many places where you can ring in the New Year and say bye-bye to 2015. Simian Mobile Disco will be on hand, performing an exclusive DJ set. The duo, comprised of James Ford and Jas Shaw, are always reinventing themselves, keeping their sound and vibe fresh and new. Their most current release, Whorl, showcases just that, as they recorded everything live, essentially abandoning previous music making methods. They'll be joined by a bevy of DJs, including Jay Tripwire, whose innovative, soulful tunes make him a fan favorite. Rounding out the lineup are Matt Hubert, Pedro Arbulu and Menno, each adding their own flair to the night. Public Works is open late too, so come say goodbye to 2015 while welcoming 2016 with open arms. (CQ)

Blasthause is celebrating an incredible milestone this first week of January 2016. For two decades, aka 20 years, Blasthaus has provided quality events and music to the masses, and they show no sign of slowing down. To commemorate, Blasthaus is taking over 1015 for a night full of banging beats. The British electronic band Hot Chip is hitting the stage for a special DJ set, which is a treat for anyone who attends, since the band tends to re-invent their music into more of a improvisation full of bass. Also performing is OK Go, an American alternative band hailing from Chicago that now calls LA home. This quartet is also performing a DJ set, which I'm sure will be as quirky and elaborate as their music videos tend to be. They'll also be joined by XiaXia Technique, which is Timothy Norwind and Dan Konopka (also from OK Go) side project. The Blasthaus residents will also be playing, with more to be announced, but you have to attend to find out the full lineup. (CQ)

There are solid record labels and then there are recognizable musical collectives… brotherhoods who work together for the furtherment of electronic music. One such crew is based proudly in Hamburg; goes by the name of Diynamic and owes a large part of its success to German born Holger Behn aka H.O.S.H.. First and foremost, H.O.S.H. considers himself to be a DJ, someone who praises the art of mixing records and sequencing journeys - preferably long ones - over anything else.

Event: Lights Down Low w/ Tiga
Venue: Monarch

The origins of Montreal born DJ-producer-incipient Teutonic legend Tiga lie to the vague and troubling East, where he was weaned on the nefarious milk of the notorious 1980s Indian club scene. 2003 was the year that Tiga released his mix CD on !K7 for their DJ Kicks series. His take on Nelly's "Hot in Herre", released for the DJ Kicks compilation, became a huge success and resulted in it being licensed in the UK by Skint, as well as the GAS region by Warner Music. His first full-length original artist album is due within the year.

Known as a DJ who can get the party started, Aeroplane has a distinct analog house sound fused with nu disco. He's created musical fire by remixing such artists like Justin Timberlake and Charli XCX, showing that he knows his ish. In 2012, Aeroplane was selected by Pete Tong as the 500th DJ to perform an 'Essential Mix' and as a result was named NME's 20 Most Groundbreaking Dance Acts in the World. Event: Werd feat. Lando
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Lando, Jamaica Suk, WERD DJs
Music: techno, tech-house
Cover: $5
This week's edition of Werd brings two Berlin-via-California rising techno producers back home for some lightly priced Sunday fun. Jamaica is still only just beginning to bud as a producer, with only two releases to her name, beginning in 2013, but this Bay Area expat shows promise to come. On the other hand, Lando has been garnering interest since 2010, with a Hotflush release back in 2011. Now you'll find him enjoying a residency at Berlin's infamous Tresor and running his own label, Myth Recordings, gaining a stronger and stronger foothold in his adopted home of Berlin. The two of them have found themselves recently releasing on Tim Xavier's new Berlin-based label, FaceToFace, which will undoubtedly focus on heavy-hitting, clean, precisely engineered techno in typical Xavier and Berlin style, which you'll be able to get a taste of this Sunday at Monarch.
