Halloween Roundup
It may have felt as though San Francisco has been celebrating Halloween for the past month, but never fear, Halloween week is finally here. And like the party city that it is, SF is full of spooky events for you to attend while dressed to the nines in whatever costume your heart desires. Start your Halloween weekend on Wednesday with Gavin & Robbie Hardkiss at Housepitality as they take over the decks for 6 hours. Or perhaps Thursday works better for you, at which time you can catch Carl Cox with Opulent Temple residents at Public Works. Friday is chock-full of events but few you may like in particular is seeing Canadian duo Blond:ish at Monarch, Fehrplay at Mighty, and FREQs at Luxx. With Saturday being actually Halloween, it's no surprise this day has John Digweed at Mighty, Groove Armada & Seth Troxler at The Midway , The Polish Ambassador at The Armory, and Dubfire & Audiofly at Public Works. And finally to close your weekend off head over to Holy Cow for Black Sunday. Now this may come as a shock to you, but this is just a taste of all this week has to offer. Check out the full lineup below, where I can guarantee there is something for everyone. Dates: 10/27-10/31, Time: 9pm-til late, Place: San Francisco, Cover: $tba (CQ)

Ghost Ship
It's a tradition now to head out to massive spaces for Burning Man-esque sounds and scapes. Those scapes comprise of not only the favorite large-scale art projects that fill up Pier 70 in the Dogpatch, but Halloween provides the perfect backdrop for San Franciscans to show off their creativity and crafty whimsy. This event runs for two nights in a row, and you can choose either one or both for your Halloween bash. This event was actually born of tragedy, when mayor Gavin Newsom had to shut down the long-running Halloween in the Castro after some terrible violences that were not-so-merry. Lead idea people were of favorite Burner camps like Andrea Lindquist of Space Cowboys and Peter Glikshtern of Club 6, Public Works, Mighty, etc.. who believed that Halloween should return to the cultural creatives. Although the city decided not t concern itself so much with Halloween, the creatives knew that this was this was their chance for a great party. And with that, Ghost Ship was born in 2007. This fair writer likes to believe that it exists as an alternative to the drunken, sloppy, slutty hootenanny that can so often become Halloween in so many corners of this country and bring it back to those who enjoy the creative play that this holiday provides. Dress up in your finest, San Francisco and listen to some of the best local dance music that we have to offer. Because this isn't about the big names, this is about community, this is about creativity, it's about fun, and it's about empowerment. Date: October Fri 30th and Sat 31st, Time: 9pm-4am, Place: Pier 70 Building 12, Cover: $55-115, link More Info (ML)

This one is no different, as presales to see Carl Cox at Public Works are gone, though there were will be a limited amount of $50 tickets at the door. A man who needs no introduction, Carl Cox is a British house and techno DJ, producer and record label owner. He’s won many awards and accolades; not to mention he puts on one bad-ass show. Even without Opulent Temple’s normal placement on the playa, he still played this year’s White Party, killing it as per usual. He’ll be joined by OT residents Syd Gris, Billy Casazza, Mike Butler and MetaTek, along with Javier Fabian from Robot Hearts also adding support. Remember, get to Public Works early if you don’t already have your ticket. (CQ)

With three rooms full of awesome music from beginning to end, you’ll be running just to catch all the bass-laden sets. Holding it down in the main room is the duo, Ed Rush & Optical. Next up is Funtcase, playing a special dnb set, The Upbeats and then Stamina’s own Gridlock and Jamal going b2b, while Audio Angel graces the mic with her melodic sound. The Ritual Crew holds it down in the 2nd room with the Uprise Audio Tour while The TacoSnap crew keeps things funky in the 3rd room. Don’t forget your costume as well as your dancing shoes (CQ)

Event: Halloween Night w/ John Digweed
Date: Sat, Oct 31st
John Digweed & Guy Mantzur - with local support by: Derek Hena + Travis Groneman B2B Matthew J + Team No Sleep
Music: house, progressive house, tech-house
$35-75 Presale

Some DJ careers are built on hype. John Digweed's career is built on substance. One of the planet's most popular DJs, his sets never fall out of favour with clubbers the world over, as his relentless global gig schedule testifies. From ethereal, swirling cinematic soundscapes to energy-infused bass-bothering tech growlers, a new generation of clubbers are learning what we already know - that there's nothing quite like being locked into a John Digweed set.

Event: Dubfire and Audiofly
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Dubfire, Audiofly, Shaded (live), Rooz, Bo, Ben Seagren, Bardia F, Thuyvu
Music: tech-house, house
Cover: $28-30
While many parties opt for the massive, strange, and extreme this Halloween, Public Works keeps it simple with a twist as they bring in top talent in a more standard clubbing environment — with the addition of everyone in crazy costumes. Talent tonight comes in the form of Dubfire and Audiofly, both members of the underground DJ A-List. Dubfire, who used to be a member of Grammy-winning duo Deep Dish, and now creates a more challenging minimal sound to much success. With his own label, SCI+TEC, and frequent collabs with the likes of progressive star Sasha, he's definitely kicking off his own career on his terms. Audiofly, another elite DJ name, consists of two Brits who have taken their groovy and melodic sound from London's Fabric to Ibiza's Amnesia. And tonight these artists will come here to play at Public Works alongside a costume contest and some killer lights. (ML)

Event: Honey Mahogany's Disco Halloween Circus
Venue: Starlight Lounge
DJs: Riley Patrick
Music: disco
Cover: $25
This super costume Halloween party takes it the extra step into disco with perhaps one of this year's only themed Halloween offerings. The event will feature disco tunes from local DJ Riley Patrick, although of course the main attractions of the night will be drag queen and woman-about-town-extraordinaire Honey Mahoghany, as well as contortionists, avant-clown troupe Fou Fou Ha in their disco finest, and — of course — you! With a $500 costume contest, you better look like the belle of the Saturday night (literally and figuratively) ball. While everyone else can focus on death and other spooks this Halloween, come to the top of the city to stay alive! (ML)

Event: Phantasm: A Karnival of Mischief
Venue: The Armory
DJs: The Polish Ambassador, Rob Garza, Syd Gris, Croatia Squad, Hoj, Kimba, Ethan Miller, Matt Kramer, Clarkie, Vitamindevo and more
Music: progressive, breaks, electro, electronica, deep house
Cover: $60
What's spookier than an old castle in the middle of the Mission that used to hold guns, then was a house of porn, and now is a daring rave location? The only thing scarier than that is not enjoying this killer of a party on Halloween. From the same people who bring you favorite parties like New Bohemia NYE, Masquerotica, Opulent Temple, and more, comes this Halloween spectacular that focuses as much on art and performance (think Vau de Vivre Society and Burning Man camp large scale art) as it is great live music (festival faves like Polish Ambassador, local legend Rob Garza, and Opulent Temple's Syd Gris). Perhaps what is most exciting about this freak show is that it is a place where you cannot tell where the show ends and the audience begins. Join a part of the magic on Halloween although BEWARE: presales have sold out, so plan to come early or late to snag some door tickets. (ML)

Event: Scary Party
Venue: The Midway
DJs: Groove Armada, Seth Troxler, Subb-An,Galen, Anthony Mansfield, Rich Korach, Rachel Torro, Dax Lee, Jimmy B, Tamo, Ed Mazur, Arthur Rek
Music: deep house, tech-house
Cover: $50
You know SF loves Halloween because they pull out all the stops. The music is fantastic and production companies head out to the rave dives where things feel a little more industrial and large-scale than usual. And that's because it is. Halloween is literally party Christmas. This newest offering to the table is heading out to the newest offering to the venue table: The Midway, way way out in the Dogpatch and looking fly in a new arts space (we love those). This party comes with especially sweet deep-housing leaning sounds from both top locals, like Disco Knights' Jimmy B and Rachel Torro, as well as Crosstown Rebels' Subb-An and most-famous Groove Armada & DJ Seth Troxler. In apparently what is the grand tradition of Halloween there will be large scale art as well as other delightful treats including a Funktion One sound system. There is nothing here that will be ok to miss. So weigh in on that when you're making your plans this eve. (ML)
