Masquerotica
Sure other cities have their benefits. New York parties stay open all night. LA has a seemingly endless collection of abandoned warehouses in which to party. But here in San Francisco, we got the party people who love to get down in get-ups. The get-ups are not only for revelers but also for spaces, and while the grand tradition of Masquerotica gets ready for its sexual ectasy makeover. The music is reminiscent of the breaksier side of the Playa (think Opulent Temple's Syd Gris and and Street Ritual's MiKAL) although house will also be on display. Enjoy cabaret (ol chum), fashion shows, and art in old school venue The Sound Factory. Hide your identity and play the sex kitten for this marvelous maelstrom of pleasure. Date: October 17, Time: 9pm-4am, Place: The Sound Factory, 525 Harrison St., link More Info (ML)

One of the latest US acts to break into the innercircles of respected underground artists pushing new limits are Pittsburgh Track Authority aka PTA. Thomas Cox who will be playing as PTA. Event: Danny Howells
Venue: Audio
DJs: Danny Howells, Nikita
Music: house, tech-house, minimal
Cover: no cover w. RSVP b4 11pm, $10 presale

It takes a special DJ that you don't get bored when they come to visit town so frequently. With Danny Howells — the man, the legend — you still manage to get your panties in a bunch when you see his name on upcoming bills. After 20 years of touring, and a number of times visiting our fair city in the past years, notably at The EndUp, and now on a Thursday at Audio. This Brit's sounds hearken back to a time of the Second Summer of Love and info lines regarding huge park and hangar raves in the English countryside. He's been called an audience's DJ and, purportedly, the first place to start with house. Come see what's up, especially with the free entry before 11pm with RSVP. (ML)

Event: Ravers For Change: A Benefit for Broke-Ass Stuart for Mayor
Venue: Monarch
DJs: J. Phlip, Gavin Hardkiss, Galen, Richie Panic, Jimmy B, Rob G
Music: tech-house
Cover: $5

Somewhere in the last two years, San Francisco legend and "jewel" of contra-thought, insightful witticisms, travel tips, and hipsterdom became more than just a writer and thought leader, but also a candidate for the upcoming mayoral race. With a platform that seems based perhaps more in raising political awareness in a city that is increasingly young and, perhaps increasingly, unaware of issues facing our city as it consistently grows and changes. Somehow, the cool and edgy got involved and Stuart has had a number of awesome fundraisers like Monarch's "Ravers for Change," a techno event that also functions as a campaign for BAS (nee Stuart Schuffman). Regardless of whether you support Stuart, Vote 1-2-3 Against Lee, or have no effin clue what I', talking about, tonight's event features a lineup of local stars who ostensibly do support Stuart's politics and want to invoke change in San Francisco and inspire participation in its citizens. With J.Phlip, Gavin Hardkiss, Galen, Jimmy B, and more, you'll get both a great Thursday out and political kudos with this one and you might even learn a little bit. Heck, you might learn a lot. The Nicaraguan American DJ has captivated audiences with his nimble fingers and beat juggling tricks and I'm sure Friday will be no different. Also on deck is Shortkut, a member of both the Invisibl Skratch Piklz and Beat Junkies. Prepare to be impressed by his quality track selection and scratching skills. Plus, be sure to wish him a happiest of birthdays, as he'll be celebrating here in style. Rounding out the lineup are Goldenchyld and some very special guests, but you'll have to attend to find out who. (CQ)

Event: Face X w/ DJ Harvey
Venue: Public Works
DJs: DJ Harvey, Jacques Renault
Music: house-ish
Cover: $17 presale
DJ Harvey is absolutely his own man, he is a near mythical character, who's fans and followers refer to themselves as his cult members, or study-masters. Harvey's musical style cannot simply be filed as eclectic or retrospective, he plays whatever he feels, as he feels it, but always for the crowd. Best put by Harvey himself "You can't understand the blues until you've had your heart broken and you can't understand my music till you've had group sex on ecstasy" He is an analogue loving DJ that utilizes reel to reel and effects all conjured live while not being afraid to utilize new technology in the mix too. Harvey will only ever play one party a night arriving early to settle in, tweak the sound and take his crowd on a journey he inspires but they partake in and influence the ride along the way.

If not, never fear, as DJ Dan will be rocking the non-dusty decks of Public Works as part of the Afterburn. He'll be joined Disco Knights resident Anthony Mansfield, who'll be adding his own signature sound to the night. Also playing that night will be your favorite Dusty Rhino DJs, so if you're missing a bit of home or didn't get to go back this year, get your booty to the Afterburn. One of SF's favorite DJs returns to Mighty to rock the dancefloor. Mark Farina really needs no introduction, but I'll tell you about him anyways. Making quite the name for himself in the Chicaco house scene, Farina created his own blend of house known as mushroom jazz. Fusing the funky qualities of house with the smooth jazz sounds, Mushroom Jazz took the music world by storm, thanks to the musical series of the same name. Joining him will be DJ M3 from Green Gorilla Lounge dropping the latest and greatest in funk and house. Laser Native residents Vitamindevo and Lt. Event: Werd
Venue: Monarch
DJs: DADON, residents
Music: tech-house
Cover: $5-7
California can seem large, but when it comes to house music, the community is wide spread and connected like a tight-knit fam (or, squad, as has become such a popular turn of phrase in recent days). One such member of this crew is Dadon, a DJ from SoCal whose sets inspire and his website MusicIs4Lovers offers a more intellectual side to the never-ending love of jams. Dadon's site focuses on the future of the music we all know and love, and his sets — and now productions — also glance toward the sounds to come in our community. Get out there 'n jam on a Sunday. We know you want to. (ML)
