Burning Man 2015
The man burns in 18 days. It's the final couple weeks (or days, for some of you) of prep and soon you'll be heading out to that thing in the desert. I'm sure by now you've heard that big camps like Dancetronauts, Roots Society and Opulent Temple were denied placement, but they will still have a presence out there. Their resident DJs will perform all around the playa, so keep an eye out. OT's Sacred Dance white party will still be held Wednesday in the vicinity of inner playa, 4:00, just look for all those in white. Even with this kind of change, Burning Man will still be one of the most interactive and art-filled festivals you can attend, so I hope you're ready. Also, there seems to be an influx of mosquitoes out at BRC this year, as well as a rumor of rain, so plan accordingly. But if you've been to Black Rock City even once, you know that BM is totally unpredictable, so this should be nothing new. Date: Aug 30-Sept 7,m Time: 24/7, Place: Black Rock City, NV, Cover: $400, link More Info (CQ)

RIP Jon Horvath, Fort Knox Five
This week, the music world and Bay Area lost a talented friend. Jon Horvath, producer and founding member of both Fort Knox Five and Fort Knox Recordings, lost his battle with an undisclosed illness. In July, it was revealed that he was in critical condition in a hospital in Canada, surrounded by family. Musicians and fans alike have shared their respects and support for Jon H, as he was affectionately known by all. Humbled by his contribution as a man and as a musician, the scene mourns together this profound loss. In an effort to curb some of the pain, an impromptu memorial will take place tonight, Tuesday, at the Hayes Valley Temple in Patricia Green. Hosted by HUSHconcerts, this gathering begins at 7pm. All are invited to share in Jon H's memory, and are encouraged to bring stories, music and photos that remind you of him. There's an official gathering in DC for family members, but since we were all family, the Bay needed our own too. Rest in Funk, Jon H. Date: Tue 8/18, Time: 7pm, Place: Hayes Valley Temple, Patricia Green, San Francisco, Cover: none, link More Info (CQ)

Link Of The Week
[DE]ception by Richard Bentley - For some time now, I have been uploading still images to Instagram. More often than not, I have been rotating, merging and using apps like 'layout' to modify the images to enable me to get more than the 640x640 square image to be seen. Applying that same technique to my timelapse footage was the next natural progression. Many people have commented that they were deceived (in a good way), by the way I had modified my still images, hence the title here '[DE]ception'; based also on the film 'Inception' and its amazing imagery link Here

Event: Soundpieces
Venue: Monarch
Artists: Dorian Concept, Flava D, Eigenheimer, Sleeve, Uncon Sci
Music: bass, trip hop, jazz
Cover: $9-15
San Francisco's eminent bass music weekly — think Housepitality for bass-heads — is hosting a huge name in the grimier side of electronic music scenes: Austria's own Dorian Concept. The young Wiener (as they call those from Vienna), has been producing in his bedroom since he was 15 and experimenting with sounds he learned in hip hop as well as his classical music training. Although he is now signed with Ninja Tune, his music sides as closely alongside that of Nicolas Jaar as it does with Flying Lotus. Soundpieces is the perfect place for this artist to stop in on his brief North American tour. He'll be joined by the lady of Butterz Records, Flava D, as well as Dutch producer Eigenheimer. (ML)

Event: Housepitality w/ Kevin Yost
Venue: F8
DJs: Kevin Yost, JP Soul, Anthony Mansfield
Music: deep house
Cover: $5 on RA, no cover b4 10pm with RSVP, $10 after

Kevin Yost is another one of those heroes of the underground Housepitality has become so adept at presenting. With an tireless capacity for production, he's seen dozens upon dozens of quality releases since the mid-90s, almost exclusively on the i! label alongside US garage pillar Todd Edwards. Yost commonly employs a unique approach to his DJ sets, often playing exclusively from his own enormous portfolio of more than 1000 when taking into account all the unreleased material he often plays out. All this taken into account, Housepitality will be a decidedly deep house affair this Wednesday, heavy on the jazz influences that Yost holds so dear, with plenty of soul to spare. (AO)

Event: Lights Down Low
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Evian Christ, s4nta_mu3rte
Music: dark ambient hip-hop, industrial techno
Cover: $15-18

The UK's own Evian Christ, aka Joshua Leary, is no stranger to music. Having worked on Kanye West's album Yeezus, Christ showed his talent as producer. Not wanting to be pigeonholed by that, he released an album that showed his DJing chops, melding trance and dancehall with the right of amount of bass. Warming up the dancefloor in anticipation of Evian is s4nta_mu3rte from 120 Minutes. The dark, bass-filled vibe that s4nta_mu3rte brings is the perfect sound to welcome Christ to the decks. (CQ)

Event: AYLI w/ Joy Orbison + Ben UFO All Night Long
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Joy Orbison + Ben UFO, Blondes (live), Jason Kendig, MossMoss b2b Sassmouth
Music: techno, tech-house, UK garage
Cover:$20-25
As You Like It is known for many things. Some of that is being the backbone of San Francisco's underground house and techno community. Another thing is that they bring consistently great artists to local stages. Think the two are related?! We say probably. Tonight's event is a classic AYLI kind of night: almost too much top talent to handle in a connection of great bookings that combine great names with great sets. Tonight will feature UK oft-collaborators Ben UFO and Joy Orbison. Ben UFO, the wunderkind of UK and founder of Hessle Audio who prefers to focus on his DJ work rather than blindly going for production like everyone else will play All. Night. Long alongside fellow Brit Joy Orbison, who combines modern tech house sounds with a bit of a dubbier and garage vibe. Add a live showing from Brooklyn duo Blondes, a set from Jason Kendig, arguably the biggest name in SF house music, and a b2b set of MossMoss and Sassmouth, AYLI residents and SF favorites, and this is sure to be a night spent on the dancefloor. Event: Jason Bentley

Music: house
Cover: no cover b4 11pm w/rsvp, $10 presale
As one of the most influential DJs in L.A., the U.S. and also, increasingly, the world, KCRW music director and host of its groundbreaking Morning Becomes Eclectic show, Jason Bentley is emerging as an accomplished curator and new breed of tastemaker, not just for music, but for many of the finer things in life. Bentley is at ease entertaining an elite group at an upscale industry event as much as he is commanding the masses at Coachella, spinning tracks in a packed Yuma tent, in between interviewing artists for the festival live streams on YouTube and AXS.TV to an estimated 11 million viewers worldwide.

Event: Oliver Dollar
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Oliver Dollar, M3, Mario Dubbs, Dru Deep
Music: house
Cover: $10-20 presale
The past 3 years have seen Oliver name gradually build to a recognizable staple in house music. This Berlin born and based producer has gained acknowledgment through a series of solid releases on labels such as Made To Play, Grand Petrol and Front Room Recordings. He first began turning heads in 2009 through his releases Whatcha Gonna Do and You Got It both on Made To Play. An artist EP, also on Made To Play named I Hope, later followed this. He was fully welcomed into the family when asked to mix the Made To Play compilation, which received a welcome response from press and clubbers alike. It is clear there are exciting times ahead for this prominent Berlin house producer, who is gaining recognition across the world as his unique style of House continues to grow in popularity.

Event: Trent Cantrelle + Magdalena
Venue: Audio
DJs: Trent Cantrelle, Magdalena
Music: house
Cover: $10 presale
Los Angeles-based Cantrelle has emerged as a tastemaker for a new generation of dance music fans who have tired of cookie-cutter tracks and predictable breaks and builds. With a deep catalog of standout releases on such divergent labels as Ministry of Sound, Spinnin', Toolroom, and Size X, Cantrelle's stylistic versatility and consummate ear for quality have enabled him to expand horizons on marquee stages across the globe. Hamburg based superwoman Magdalena is the latest addition to the Diynamic artist roster. Not only did she run the renowned EGO Club in Hamburg; she also had her monthly residency there, releases her own radio show each month and plays gigs regularly in clubs like Weekend or Watergate in Berlin or Pacha and Cova Santa on Ibiza and she is a regular part of all Diynamic Showcases worldwide.

Event: Boundaries w/ Chez Damier
Venue: Mighty
DJs: Chez Damier, Nick Monaco, Papa Lu
Music: house
Cover: $15-20
Mighty will be hosting a Chicago legend this Saturday. Chez Damier has had more fingers in the development of house and techno than he has on his hands. Together with the legendary Ron Trent, he ran Prescription Records, providing a huge outlet for Trent's own releases and shaping the sound of The Music Box in doing so. His knack for keeping a finger on the pulse of things landed him A&R gigs at both Distance Records and KMS, one of the most important labels in Detroit and Chicago's house and techno music history. But Chez is far from working exclusively behind the scenes. An incredible DJ in his own right with a lengthy discography, Chez is once again touring internationally and rocking dancefloors after a hiatus around the early 2000s. Catch him alongside local loverboy Nick Monaco as well as Papa Lu. (AO)

Event: Psychemagik
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Psychemagik, Mozhgan, dAvi A
Music: disco, minimal synth, industrial, rock, house, techno
Cover: $10-20
Monarch's been bringing out some quality talent as of late, and this Saturday is no different. Featuring Psychemagik, a UK duo who hit the disco scene running with their remix of Fleetwood Mac's Everywhere. Their edits, remixes and original tunes are all highly regarded and sought after, so it's no surprise that these guys play festivals and tour all over the world. Joining these guys will be SF's own Mozhgan, a forward thinking DJ whose mixing and track selection set her apart from all the rest. And finally, dAvi A, formerly dAvi, takes a break from rocking the LA scene to share the stage with these two. (CQ)

Event: Stacey Pullen
Venue: Harlot
DJs: Stacey Pullen, Rooz, Bo
Music: tech-house
Cover: $15-20
This weekend's dose of Detroit techno royalty comes in the form of Stacey Pullen. Hailing from Detroit's second generation of techno DJs and producers, Stacey was taken under the wing of Derrick May from an early age. Watching Derrick run his radio show back in the day, Stacey was privy to the process behind a master's selections in a step-by-step manner as he watched the Detroit innovator piece together the tapes to the show. The experience appears to have payed off as Stacey now finds himself touring internationally, sharing his expert prowess as a DJ rather than so heavily on productions, which are not to be downplayed in their own right. Catch him alongside local techno bombers Rooz and Bo. (AO)

Event: Mighty Real Poolside
Venue: The Phoenix Hotel
DJs: Carlos Mena, David Harness, Special Guest TBA
Music: house, tech-house
Cover: $15-20
Summer is not over yet, and with this heat wave we've been enjoying, there is no better way to to enjoy it than with a pool party. While we bask in the glory that is music by a pool that is NOT in Vegas, you'll be enjoying the sweet sounds of Carlos Mena, a man whose deep seated roots in the house music world has afforded him opportunities to work with hip-hop group 10BASS T (which has oddly seen him opening for the likes of the Counting Crows), but also has been DJing soulful house for over a decade alongside Onsunlade and DJ Spinna and created his own production house, CASAMENA. He'll be joined by SF legend David Harness for a day of fun in the sun. (ML)
