Event: Housespitality ft. Mark Farina
Venue: F8
DJs: Mark Farina, Sharon Buck, Fil Latorre, Joel Conway
Music: house
Cover: $10 all night

House legend Mark Farina returns with his signature brand of "Mushroom Jazz" to wow dancefloor at F8. He has been making music for over three decades, entrancing audiences with house music inflected with the histories of San Francisco and Chicago. The trademark style Farina created of course takes elements of Jazz, but also is heavily influenced by hip hop sampling reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest. He plays with the semantics of certain rap samples coming throughout a mix in a gradual succession that allows for the effect of a refrain. For this special appearance Farina is bringing his very own mixer to F8, ensuring a custom experience like no other. (RK)

Event: Pendulum
Venue: Cellspace
DJs: Pendulum (DJ Set), Split
Music: dnb, electronica
Cover: $15

Pendulum have always been the one to take their listeners out of this world. While some drum n bass can seem formulaic at times, Pendulum's only formula has been to take their listeners out of this world. Although a space like Audio Discotech seems a little small for these trip-heavy sounds it is still a great opportunity to see the Aussie team who helped bring reggae-infused psychedelia to the masses of Australia, the UK and beyond to our fair shores. Their sound feels like the exuberance of a youth who just discovered what rave means. And sometimes that feeling doesn't have to go away. Although their act has brought them from smaller clubs to sold-out arena shows in England, official remixes for The Prodigy, and admittedly and mainstreamier, dubstep-touched sound, their sound still feels like the exuberance of a youth who just discovered what rave means. And sometimes that feeling doesn't have to go away. (ML)

This Thursday, Harlot brings in Luca Bacchetti from Spain for a night of tech-house. The Italian DJ has been on the circuit since about 2006 and has seen releases on Italian labels Tenax and Hideout as well as his own Endless Recordings alongside Guti. Luca Bacchetti is first and foremost a champion of today's partycentric tech-house sound ala Crosstown Rebels (which he's also released on), but Bacchetti is no one trick pony, which has landed him a handful of releases on Matthew Jonson's weirdo Wagon Repair label. This Thursday, catch Luca alongside Dean Samaras of The Show and BeatFreak recordings for night of straight-up tech-house - you know what I'm talking about! (AO)

Event: Throwback - A Tribute to 90s House
Venue: Mighty
DJs: Jayvi Velasco, Tyrel Williams, Rob Grega
Music: house
Cover: no cover

For all the real heads and dancers out there, take this chance on Thursday to reacquaint yourself with the period in dance music history that perhaps has had the most influence on today's sounds and styles, the house of the 90s! Whether you realize it or not, house music began looking back to 90s once again in earnest a few years ago, and before you knew it, bright chord stabs and diva vocals were what it was all about once again. The resurgence spawned a plethora of record labels devoted to the cause, and many of the most popular "underground" acts of today are simply retranslating the magic of 90s to create a magic of their own. An extremely capable lineup will take you on this journey through yesteryear - Jayvi Velasco, Rob Grega, and SF fav, Tyrel Williams - so allow yourself to take Thursday night to educate yourself on the dancefloor, and for free! Event: Fred Falke
Venue: Audio
DJs: Fred Falke, Gary Paradise, Beau Kelly
Music: French Touch, remixology, nu-disco, electro-house
Cover: no cover w/ RSVP b4 11pm, otherwise $10 presale
Much like French colleagues Daft Punk, Air and Laurent Garnier, Fred Falke was born out of the booming scene in France in the 90s. His original productions, like his first track "Intro", were huge influences on the genre. In recent years Falke has moved away from mostly original productions to focus on remixes for all variety of pop artists, ranging from Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding to other lesser known acts like FM Laeti and Eden xo. The guy knows what it takes to be a career DJ and you can hear a common thread running through each of his songs all the way from the beginning of his discography all the way to the newest song on his Soundcloud. With this kind of continuity, you know you'll hear his bouncy disco-tinged electro all night long at Audio this Friday. (ML)

Monarch gears up for another party in preparation for Detroit's Movement Electronic Music Festival coming at the end of May. This iteration features local beat master and Dirtybird resident Jessica Phillippe who operates under the moniker J.Phlip. Her style is extremely versatile, but she has mastered a merciless techno that is everything but minimal. Her productions employ vocal samples like snare kits, crafting a sound that is both interesting and hard. Her closing set at Movement last year is still discussed with due reverence. Joining her is Chuck Flask who is a resident at detroit's famed Paxahau and he is also a talent buyer for Movement, which more than hints at his vast music knowledge. Their talents will play nicely off Monarch's sleek Void audio system. (RK)

Event: Direct To Earth w/ DJ Spider
Venue: F8
DJs: DJ Spider, Bob Five, Max Gardner, Trevor Van Mook
Music: techno, house
Cover: $10-20
Direct To Earth's next night of techno features one of New York's most interesting characters, DJ Spider. Spider has only been active since about 2008, but his sound conveys nothing of a newcomer. Each production explores fresh territory and brims with confidence. It's obvious he's eager to explore new sounds, but there are some themes you'll find throughout Spider's discography: darker moods, industrial influences, and his productions always come with surprises for the discerning listener. Spider heads Plan B Recordings, on which the majority of his output is released alongside collaborators Chris Mitchell and Amir Alexander, an exciting talent from Chicago that's recently seen more and more attention. He's also seen releases on exciting labels like NORD, Finale Sessions, and The Trilogy Tapes, and you can hear him dig into his love for noise through his alias as Spider Bites and in the group Mindscraper. Direct To Earth will be hosting a truly exciting talent this Saturday, and if you're in the mood for some rough-edged, murky translations on the usual house and techno rhetoric, F8 will be the place to be.
