The Masquerade Ball
Partygoers love a good masquerade, and San Francisco is the perfect setting for an "Eyes Wide Shut" type of event. The Masquerade Ball: A Sexy Venetian Carnival Affair returns for its 6th Annual event, this year taking over a new seductive location, the Payne Mansion. This mansion is a 134 year old landmark that withstood the 1906 earthquake and has gone under major renovations, making it the perfect location for the ball. And if you don't have your own mask, not to worry, there will be complimentary ones at the event, so just dress to impress. Let go of your inhibitions and explore all this sexy affair has to offer. Featuring the musical stylings of Donovan and Hanik, each adding the perfect provocative soundtrack to the night. Come get lost in this Victorian beauty, all while losing a bit of yourself in the process. Date: Sat Feb 28, Time: 9pm-2am, Place: The Payne Mansion 1409 Sutter St, Cover: $50 presale, link More Info (CQ)

Event: James Zabiela
Venue: Mighty
DJs: James Zabiela, Matt Hubert, Beau Kelly, John Kaberna, Fabian Campos, Franccesco Cardenas, Agency 55
Music: progressive house, tech-house, breakbeats
Cover: $15-25
James Zabiela has often been called one of today's leaders in progressive house. Depending on who you are or where you're from, progressive house might sound like a bad word to techno-heads and and very "serious" fans. Regardless of your beat persuasions, there is no doubt that Britain's Zabiela is an extremely talented DJ and producer. While he has been known for everything from progressive house to breakbeats in his sets, what he is most known for is breaking it down for those on the dance floor. His most recent mix on Soundcloud showcases a more serious, tech-house, side of the artist that could be his new move for the upcoming years and shows. Come see what kinds of tricks Zabiela has up his sleeve tonight at Mighty. (ML)

Event: Krafty Kuts
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Krafty Kuts, M3, Motion Potion
Music: breaks, house, electro
Cover: $20 presale, $25 at door
Krafty Kuts is no stranger to the Bay, having rocked many a dancefloor out here. He's back, bringing his classic breakbeat turntablism that's made him famous. He's released many singles and a few albums, the most recent which explored his creative side and delved into other genres like jazz, hip-hop, funk, soul, electro, dnb and dubstep, though he remains true to his first love of breaks. He'll be joined by local heroes M3 and Motion Potion, each who'll be rocking the incredible VOID system at Monarch. (CQ)

Event: Lights Down Low 9 Year Anniversary
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Kevin Saunderson, Cyril Hahn, MJ Cole, Todd Edwards, Jonas Rathsman, DJ Dials
Music: techno, garage, house, pop
Cover: $30
Lights Down Low: one of San Francisco's top production companies and one who is just one year shy of their ten year anniversary. But who said you can only celebrate on even decades!? Instead, DJ Dials and crew are bringing you a special night at Public Works featuring two artists from either end of house and techno's historical and sonic spectrums. For many, the highlight will be Kevin Saunderson — the man, the legend. The man from Detroit who helped to start it all way back in the 80s is still continuing to crush it by maintaining a career and continuing to delight his fans worldwide. On the other side, there is Cyril Hahn. A man who helps to create the Vancouver scene as it is today, his pop-tinged, garage-leaning house styles are almost universally appealing. Although it's not "EDM" as those kids are calling it these days, Hahn's music represents the mainstreaming of house music, opening it's doors to a whole new collection of youngsters who may not know about Saunderson, but they know about a house party. We're sure the fans of these two artists might be slightly different, but we're also sure that LDL must have had a merging in mind when they made this book. See the worlds collide this Friday at Public Works. (ML)

Event: Slow Magic and Lindsay Lowend
Venue: 1015 Folsom
DJs: Slow Magic, Lindsay Lowend, Moors, Underbelly
Music: bass, jazz-infused electronica
Cover: $20
1015 brings you a different kind of DJ this Friday. Featuring the musical stylings of Slow Magic, a masked performer who prefers to leave everything but the music to your imagination. Not one to be pigeonholed, he synthesizes live instrumentation with electronica, all while incorporating live drumming. This, plus his technicolor masks, creates a one-of-a-kind performance. He'll be joined by DC's Lindsay Lowend, whose bass infused jazz keeps booties shaking and the earth quaking. Rounding out the lineup are Moors and Underbelly, so get to 1015 for something a little out of the ordinary. (CQ)

Event: Lil Louis
Venue: Mighty
DJs: Lil Louis, David Harness
Music: house, acid, tech-house, techno
Cover: $13-20
It's hard to resist the Chicago DJs. 8 times out of 10, they've been playing twice as long as anyone else in town. Lil Louie is one of those prodigies that began playing clubs while still in middle school (where he gets the name), back in the 70s. Certainly one of the lesser recognized of the original Chicago DJs, Lil Louie found himself as the new hot stuff when "French Kiss" dropped - a track in the right place at the right time that ended up getting him signed to some major record deals. Just a few months back, his career was nearly ended when some wise guy decided it'd be fun to bring together Louie's ear and and airhorn. This will be his first gig since then - he was utterly unsure if he'd ever be able to play again after that, and who knows, he might just have to stop in the near future. If you haven't seen him before, tonight's the night, and give him all the love you got. (AO)

Event: Night Moves 3 Year Anniversary w/ DJ Pierre
Venue: Monarch
DJs: DJ Pierre, J Boogie, Deejay Theory, Papa Lu
Music: house, acid, tech-house
Cover: $13-20
Monarch does it up with a true innovator this time. It isn't really disputed that DJ Pierre played a significant role in making acid house a thing. With the Chicago acid house supergroup Phuture came arguably the first acid house recording, an LP "Acid Tracks", legend has it its the first record taking the 303 all the way to outer space. Take that and combine it with Ron Hardy's enthusiasm when they handed it to him at the Muzic Box and you have the birth of acid house. This will be a night of jacking house - Pierre's style is weird, trippy, a bit debaucherous, for the dancefloor, and undoubtedly Chicago -albeit a different Chicago from Frankie Knuckles' Chicago. Not one to miss! (AO)

Event: Sasha
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Sasha, Rooz, Bo, Gravity, Zach Walker, Jonathan Will, Moe Moe
Music: progressive house, deep house, playa tech
Cover: $15-40
If you don't know who Sasha is, get your head in the game. No, no, we're not talking about this humble writer's beloved sister, rather the ultra-famous, genre-defining that is mononymously called Sasha. Alongside John Digweed, Sasha helped to create progressive house in the 90s, at famous venues such as Hacienda and Renaissance. The man still tours constantly (lucky us), but also helps to promote today's forward thinking artists, such as Max Cooper, Thermal Bear, and Ghosting Season on his label Last Night on Earth. With over 20 years of internationally acclaimed DJ work under his belt, you can be sure Sasha will make this a night for the books. And this is all not to mention a Pink Mammoth stage upstairs in the loft. Man, sometimes you really just gotta love San Francisco for nights like this. (ML)

Event: Werd
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Rich Korach, Woo, Zoz
Music: house, techno
Cover: $5-10
One of the city's finest plays Werd! Rich grew up in Detroit and was of course surrounded by pretty much limitless, great great great dance music. It's obvious Rich is an indiscriminate consumer of music - if it tastes good, he bites. Suffice to say he's comfortable navigating all kinds of 4/4 territory and beyond. These skills landed him a residency with As You Like It long, long ago - long in clubbing years that is. I've heard him lay down old disco gems, go down the tech-house tunnel with Sassmouth, I've heard him get tribal and seen him reach for the danker part of his dub techno collection. He never disappoints and could honestly probably be quite the globetrotter but hey, SF is awesome, why leave? It's also Maki's birthday! If you know Maki, make sure to come early for champagne and all that! (AO)
