LOVE:CURE
Love cures all. While this might be true for ailments of the heart, it is unfortunately not always so true in regards to cancer. So while we enjoy this Valentines Weekend as a chance to celebrate our relationships, let us also consider our relationships to our fellow humans who have not been so healthfully lucky in the past years. While this is in all seriousness, it does not mean that everything about it has to be stone-faced. We can totally create change with a great party! And a great party it will be indeed. Hosted at one of San Francisco's oldest party venues, The Factory, you know this will be a party with great flow and some off-the-beaten-internet-trails denizens. With a headliner like the inimitable Crystal Method, you'll be thrown back into the 90s with bangers like you have not heard out in years. There will be an Opulent Temple side room (if you were doubting the level of rave-tasticness, this is your chance to change your mind), as well as an art collection, this party covers all the bases. So work towards a cure for cancer while dancing for love. Date: Fri Feb. 13, Time: 9pm - 4am, Place: The Factory, 565 Harrison St.. Cover: $25-75, link More Info (ML)

Venue: Harlot
Artists: Mr. C, Keith Kraft
Music: house, techno, acid, tech-house
Cover: $2 in a tutu b4 11pm, $10 otherwise
If there was ever a time to get silly and put on a tutu, now's the time! Mr. C is a DJ that can really get a party happening, especially if it's a bit of a freaky funky one. A champion of the weird, Mr. C is all about 90's records of acid and tribal tech-house, or to be more general, awesome underground party vibes. He's been doing it for a hot minute too, from his days as an MC in London to his residency at the legendary The End in London to running his Superfreq label (which the locally loved LA duo Dance Spirit released on last year). Mr. C will be joined by the very capable Keith Kraft. Oh, and $2 in a tutu before 11pm - time to hit up Costumes on Haight! (AO)

Event: BASE: Timo Maas
Venue: Harlot
DJs: Timo Maas, John Halloran
Music: techno, tech-house
Cover: $10

Although Maas has been widely described as a purveyor of techno, tech house or a whole load of other genre prescriptions, the striking thing about his music is the effortless ease with which it morphs chameleon-like from one style to another. His latest album, for example, runs from the almost Beatles-esque raga of 'Visions', which features the sitar work of fellow German Torsten de Winkel. One sure measure of Maas' studio success has been the vast array of games, movies and TV shows that have looked to his music to provide soundbeds and the appropriate atmosphere. Yet it is still his club work that informs and drives much of the desire in the studio. "I come from DJing," he asserts. "For me it's the connection to the world outside.

Event: Acid Pauli
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Acid Pauli, Eduardo Castillo
Music: tech-house, house, techno, disco, funk, surprises
Cover: $12-20
A double dose of the Crosstown Rebels crew! Acid Pauli began releasing his electronic material back in '95 and has since cemented himself a status as one of Germany's most in-demand DJs. Seeing Acid Pauli play out is a mixture of being curated the Crosstown Rebels sound alongside surprises from abroad - exotic rhythms from near the equator coming in between the beats. Its no wonder how popular he's become with a style fusing safer, club-ready material with stuff more exciting for the regular club-goer. He'll be playing an extended set, and Eduardo Castillo, also a Crosstown Rebels DJ, will take care of the rest of the night. (AO)

Event: Colette
Venue: Slide
DJs: DJ Colette, Andrew Phelan
Music: house
Cover: $10
DJ, producer, vocalist – Colette has grown from an integral part of the Chicago underground into a breakout musical triple-threat releasing her most accomplished and fully realized artistic statement to date. Combining the tunefulness of classic pop songs with the thump of classic house of her hometown, the album ventures into new sonic territory for Colette, from intimate bedroom beats to stadium-shaking dance anthems. When the Music's Loud is the sound of an artist at the peak of her powers.

Event: Doc Martin
Venue: Hawthorn
DJs: Doc Martin, King Most
Music: house, techno, disco, jams, dance
Cover: $10-20
Doc Martin has been DJing SF since 1986. He's spent some time in LA and developed a bit of a commute to London back in the 90s, but you can hardly go a month without being able to see Doc Martin play SF. It's safe to say he knows what a California crowd wants, and likewise it shouldn't be taken the wrong way when I say the guy's a crowd pleaser. What I mean is he's been doing it for a while, and he's got the recipe for a moving SF dancefloor down - mix the funk and disco in with the house, allow for some acid to come through as the temp comes to a boil, and toss in some techno to taste. Always fun sets, so not a bad night to check out the still-new club Hawthorn! (AO)

Event: Nightmares on Wax
Venue: Mighty
DJs: Nightmares on Wax (DJ Set)
Music: house, funk, trip-hop
Cover: $20 Presale
Best known for his ground-breaking '90s albums 'Smokers Delight' and 'Carboot Soul'. The man behind the moniker - Nightmares on Wax, George Evelyn, was raised in Leeds' inner-city (Hyde Park, Burley) but has become a man of the world who keeps reinventing his sound. For the last seven years he's lived in an Ibizan farmhouse and, while he's Warp Records' longest serving artist – "the granddaddy," as he puts it - he overwhelmingly focuses on his current projects, letting them revitalize his music. His new album - 'Feelin' Good' is zesty with funk, soul, even the throbbing low slung house tune 'Tapestry'. Don't miss out this Friday at Mighty.

Event: Pulse Generator 1 Year
Venue: Underground SF

Can you believe it's been a year since Pulse Generator began. This local outfit has been supporting the scene - both behind and in front of the decks - for a year now and providing a great monthly outfit for local DJs and their dancing counterparts to revel in a great monthly party for friends by friends. For the big one year, Pulse Gen will be showing a family favorite, As You Like It's own MossMoss. The man is a leader in both techno and ambient music and true artist through and through. Event: A Valentine's Day Love Affair w/ Kerri Chandler
Venue: Mighty
DJs: Kerri Chandler, Mike Servito, Mike Gushansky
Music: deep house, house, techno, acid
Cover: $20-25
Kerri Chandler's a bit of an ex-pat, he grew up in New Jersey but these days you'd be hard pressed to find a date with him out of the European club circuit that makes his commute today. Loosely grouped together with his Detroit and Chicago-based peers, Kerri Chandler's style today blends the jazz and African influences they all drew on with the atmosphere and feel of big room Europe. One of the more important DJs and producers of today, Kerri is a must-see for anyone yearning to hear true deep house. The rest of the night will be rounded out by Mike Servito and AYLI's own Mike Gushansky. Servito's been enjoying quite some popularity here in the Bay Area and if you ask me, makes this party a double-headliner. A well-known acid aficionado, Mike's record bag never ceases to bring the trainspotters out and keep the crowd moving. Don't miss out on this opportunity to see Kerri Chandler, cuz you don't know when he'll be on our home turf again. (AO)

It's a 90-minute affair that includes ten readers, one musical guest, erotic art, and a hint of mayhem. Curated by Jennifer Lewis and Veronica Christina, the evening invites everyone toward unfettered expression.

Event: Mr. V
Venue: Hawthorn
DJs: Mr. V, Andrew Phelan, DJ Zhaldee
Music: house
Cover: $10 presale
Experiencing Mr. V's (AKA Victor Font) DJ sets, original productions, or remixes is like taking a trip back in time to dance music's golden age. Before superstar DJs took over the spotlight, dance music was a cultural phenomenon that did what no other form of music could do – bring people together. It didn't matter what race or sexual orientation you came from because dance music was all about embracing our differences and creating a homogeneous vibe. The music was built heavily on traditional song structures and lots of heart and soul. DJs played whatever it took to get the party going and the music was never predictable. It is with this classic spirit and enthusiasm that New York City's Mr. V targets today's dance music world. Mr. V is a throwback in the purest sense.

Event: Honey Soundsystem w/ Kenji Takimi
Venue: Mighty
DJs: Kenji Takimi
Music: tech-house, alt-disco
Cover: $10 presale
While you might think of Harujuki girls and dreams of sushi when you hear of Japan but for others who are aware of Japan's growing underground scene, the name Kenji Takimi might come to mind. The man has fostered his own nu-disco movement in the heart of Japan and has collaborated with top artists of the field such as DJ Harvey, was featured as the Beats in Space podcast of the year last year, and has played at places like Berlin's famed Homopatik party (one that could be considered the sister party to Honey) . Whether or not you've heard of this artist, you can be sure you can trust Honey Soundsystem when it comes to giving SF debuts for international artists and Honey's built in fanbase will create a top notch crowd no matter where or who is playing. Enjoy the long weekend and spend your extra time with a nice long dance that you can also tell your work mates was a Japanese cultural experience if you are so inclined. (ML)

Brett Johnson will be on hand dropping those soulful grooves and techno beats we love so much. Joining him is Beaner, a DJ who clearly has a good sense of humor judging by his tongue-in-cheek bio. His signature house sound is all over the place, going from experimental to deep to soulful and back again. Papa Lu, Galen and Solar hold it down in the catacombs as well, while Kimmie Le Funk and Woo keep the WERD Lounge popping. End you Valentine's weekend on a high note! (CQ)
