17th SF Independent Film Festival
Sometimes we like to take a break from music to get a dose of culture in other realms of art. Everyone knows that films can be just as entertaining as a rave. Also, we know you love the underground, and the 17th annual San Francisco Indie Film Festival will be just that. From Thursday February 5th until Thursday February 19th, you'll have dozens of chances to catch some of the best of independent cinema before it hits other exhibition halls and is often a chance to see some of the greatest films that may never be officially distributed. With all the news of Sundance showing films like Jupiter Ascending (VFX and Channing Tatum, soooo not indie), San Francisco has remained a haven for TRULY indie films to thrive. The Lineup includes bigger name titles such as Wild Canaries (starring Arrested Development's Alia Shawkat), 90's glancing documentary Beyond Clueless and films from the Phillipines, Australia and more. This is your chance to stop feeding the Hollywood machine, support local theaters, and enjoy yourself in a way that The Transformers could never let you (because obviously The Transformers represents all that is Hollywood). Venues range throughout the Bay Area, so be sure to check the listings. Date: Feb 5-19, Time: varies, Place: various, mostly Mission SF and Oakland, Cover: $12-15, package and all-access deals available, link More Info (ML)

Dirtybird 10 Celebration
Believe it or not, San Francisco's group Dirtybird has now been around for 10 years! Proving how many years it takes to go from an underground collective to a straight-up genre-defining and scene-making institution for our fair city, the DB crew is throwing a party to celebrate. Having begun in January 2005, the crew now encompasses not only label-maker Claude vonStroke - now an international mega star - as well as local star-on-the-rise J. Phlip, booty bass stars Justin and Christian Martin, as well as international names like Catz n' Dogz, Eats Everything and Julio Bashmore. An impressive list to say the least. Tonight's event will feature some of their best talent, all together again. This includes vonStroke himself, Kill Frenzy, J. Phlip, Justin Martin, Christian Martin, and Worthy. As usual, DB still offers a deal for early arrivals so be sure to get ready to get the party started. This will be one for the books - or at least until the next 10 years! Date: Fri Feb 6, Time: 9pm-late, Place: Mezzanine, Cover: $10 b4 11pm, $20 after, link More Info (ML)

The Secret's out! Yes that's right, this week Housepitality will be celebrating the second release of your Housepitality residents Bai-ee and Tyrel Williams, Secret Studio. While these two have been DJing around SF for quite some time now, their production project as Secret Studio seemed to come out of nowhere just last summer - kicking their debut release off featuring none other than today's best-in-acid D'Marc Cantu! Check out Housepitality this Wednesday to grab a copy of the new record before everyone else does (even Maceo Plex)! Carlos Souffront will also be playing, a damn good DJ and one who's recently captured the attention of the ever-more popular Black Madonna. Tasho will be in the back room this time, and free champagne for the early birds as usual. Buy a record! (AO)

Event: Mark Starr
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Mark Starr
Music: dirtybird, bassy house
Cover: $7-10

Coming in early to fly the dirtybird flag the day before their big 10 year anniversary is Mark Starr. A new addition to the dirtybird fam, Mark first came into connection with the label after sending some tracks to Kill Frenzy much to his own delight. Fast forward just a little bit and Claude VonStroke is tweeting the rising producer and telling him he better send some tracks over to get signed. Since then he's been in the fast lane, showing up on Shadow Child's Rinse.FM show and enjoying massive support from the major players of the bass-heavy house movement. Check him out to practice your moves before the big party on Friday. (AO)

Event: Green Gorilla Lounge 19th Anniversary Party
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Catz N Dogz, Heidi, Sleight of Hands, Anthony Mansfield, King Most, James Glass, Mike Bee
Music: tech house, minimal, deep house
Cover: $10-25
Although they've found their home at Monarch in recent years, Green Gorilla Lounge is by no means a baby collective in the world of San Francisco nightlife. Turning 19 - probably the age some ravers are when they take their first steps into the underground - GGL has been supporting this city's soundscape for almost two decades. That is a fact that deserves celebration. And celebrate they shall, with an impressive roster of international talent as well as local flavor and character. With headliners like Catz n Dogz (Get Physical, Dirtybird, Mothership), Heidi (Jackathon Jams, Get Physical), and locals Sleight of Hands there will be plenty of true house beats to party with these industry legends. Talk about house music and it's impossible not to talk about Japan's Satoshi Tomiie. Since starting out in the late 80s he has been one of the scene's most important and influential figures who has crafted endless dancefloor anthems as well as turning his hand to more pop inclined work, headline DJ sets around the world and all the while staying as relevant as anyone in the game.

Reaching an entire new realm of sonic possibilities this time out, Awake is situated in the present, reaching Hansen's vision of Tycho like never before. Event: As You Like It
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Robag Wruhme, Daniel Bell, The Black Madonna, Steve Mizek, Olin, Bells & Whistles, Sassmouth, Rich Korach
Music: techno, minimal techno, house, chicago house, funk, edits
Cover: $25+ Presale
Once again, AYLI is here to help you check off your bucket list in record time! Robag is a lovable character, one of the German Sweethearts as I like to call them - along with DJ Koze and Roman Flügel - and an avid remixer and producer who pairs Berghain techno textures with samples of acoustic guitar and other pretty things. Daniel Bell will be doing a DJ set this time around (he played here live a few months ago), and should be a must-see for any serious techno fan. The Argot fam upstairs will be a real treat as well - The Black Madonna is sure to bring big wide grins out of the real disco fans in the house. Of course, the residents never disappoint, and Rich Korach and Sassmouth are teaming up once again for a back to back set. So there you have it! Pretty German techno, American blips-n-blips techno, and funky Chicago flavors in the loft! (AO)

Event: Poolside
Venue: Mezzanine
DJs: Poolside (DJ Set), Hercules & Love Affair
Music: disco house
Cover: $20-25 presale
The L.A.-by-way-of-Denmark-and-San Francisco duo of Filip Nikolic and Jeffrey Paradise make music called "daytime disco," meaning they use many of discos well-known tropes like funky basslines, four-on-the-floor rhythms, Latin percussion, and glittery choruses, but it's a more relaxed and peaceful sound they produce. Musically they can take you on a journey where Steely Dan is remixed by Larry Levan; Donna Summer is drunk on cough syrup, and Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" is gently plucked from the country and gets you slow dancing to a beautiful end-of-the-night jam.

Event: Robbie Akbal
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Robbie Akbal, Trickski, Bob Campbell
Music: deep house, disco, soul, deep tech house
Cover: $15-20
Black Magic Disko is back, taking over Monarch for a night full of funky beats. Robbie Akbal is a veteran deep house DJ from Mexico, who has his own label, Akbal Music. His well respected sound and talent as a producer make him a fan favorite. He'll be joined by Trickski, a DJ with an affinity for house music. His disco laced, soulful house sound keeps dancefloors packed. Rounding out the lineup is deep tech house duo Bob Campbell, the brainchild of Bob Five and Trev Campbell. This duo isn't afraid to push the musical boundaries, so get to Monarch to listen to these guys and more. (CQ)

Event: Wax Motif
Venue: Audio
Music: house (electro, deep, funky)
Cover: $10
Audio welcomes Danny Chien, aka Wax Motif to the decks. Born in Australia, Wax Motif has made quite the name for himself, as his production has caught the eyes of artists like Katy Perry , A-Trak, Laidback Luke and Diplo. He's the man behind the G-House movement, the fusion of house music and gangsta rap, and even worked with Destructo on his album for Interscope Records. He's showing the world that house music isn't just glitter and Guetta. Joining him will be SF's own TRAVISWILD, a fun and energetic DJ who's been taking the Bay by storm. Make sure to wear your dancing shoes as these guys will keep you moving all night long. (CQ)
