The Edwardian Ball
This Friday is The Edwardian World's Faire, the first of two epic nights taking over the Regency Ballroom. This is the prequel to The Edwardian Ball and Faire night is slightly naughtier and more rambunctious, but still just as dark and Edward Gorey. Featuring interactive art, theatrical stage shows, circus performers and carnival rides, this is one faire unlike any you've been to! There's also a Museum of Wonders and an "Edwardian Odditorium" that'll have all kinds of amazement to pique your curiosity, like tarot reading, fortune telling and much more. And in case you didn't know, the Regency is rumored to be haunted, having been built in 1909 and was formerly known as the Masonic. This rumor, coupled with all the crawl spaces and nooks and crannies that the Regency has, this is the perfect place to enjoy the sights and sounds of The Vau de Vire Society, Diego's Umbrella, The Barbary Coast Midway and Fou Fou Ha. Come enjoy these performers and more as they titillate all your senses with their out-of-this-world acts. Date: Fri 1/16, Time: 8pm-2am, Place: The Regency Ballroom, 1300 Van Ness Ave, Cover: $24-95, link More Info (CQ)

The new year is upon us and you know what that means: more tutus, more fun, more dancing, more mystical memories unfolding. Plenty of surprises planned for this eccentrically themed monthly gathering including a very pretty opening set from the delightfully glamorous, decadently groovy Benjamin K. McCarthy.

Event: Housepitality
Venue: F8
DJs: BabyG, Aaron Clark, Kimmy Le Funk + Zoz + Woo
Music: tech-house, nu-disco
Cover: no cover b4 11pm w/ RSVP, otherwise $5, $10 after 11pm

No, its not the chunky wristwatch you used to wear as a child, it's the B Pitch control label's BabyG, a Barcelona lady who has been spinning her own brand of nu-disco style electronica and tech house next to the likes of DJ Harvey, Erol Alkan, and now resting comfortably beside labelmates Radio Slave, Serge, and of course, label head Ellen Allein. Being brought back to the pit of house after what is now a legendary back room set (you know its a good set when everyone ends up smooshing into the backroom for a taste of the sound). Her style can range from chill funk cuts to the tech-est of house in the blink of an eye; probably skills she's learned from playing since the 90s in some of the world's top underground clubs like Panoramabar, Fabric, her own Tribal Vibes parties, and through her attendance at the Red Bull Music Academy. This is certainly a treat that regulars are already raving about (pun intended). (ML)

Event: Wake Flocka Flame
Venue: 1015 Folsom
DJs: Wake Flocka Flame, Dotcom, Trap City DJs
Music: trap, rap
Cover: $22.50+

Waka Flocka Flame didn't want to be a rapper when he grew up. He didn't want to write hit songs, perform in front of thousands of people at packed clubs or hear his songs played on radio stations across the country. But more than a year after bursting onto the scene with his debut single, "O Let's Do It," the Atlanta rapper has managed to make more of an impact on the music industry than most rappers who have spent their entire lives trying to do it. And thanks to an influential cosign from fellow ATLien Gucci Mane, and a string of chart-topping singles, including the remix to "O Let's Do It," featuring Rick Ross and Diddy, and his latest hit, "Hard In Da Paint," it doesn't look like Waka Flocka is ready to quit rapping anytime soon.

Event: Black Coffee
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Black Coffee, Marques Wyatt, Patrick Wilson
Music: house
Cover: $15
Considering his meteoric rise to fame, it would be easy to stereotype Black Coffee as just another black diamond, a BEE beat magnet out to mine the insatiable upwardly mobile urban house-party market. But as he proved on his South African Music Award-winning album Home Brewed, this DJ and producer defies convention. Sidestepping Afro-house clichés and stage-managed highs in favor of restrained sophistication, Black Coffee's penchant is for true Afropolitan house: home-brewed but trendsetting, fashion-conscious and future-focused. Expect almost sculptural balance and beauty. As if that wasn't enough, also on tap is the seminal pioneer of West Coast house - none other than Mr. Marques Wyatt.

Event: Chus + Ceballos
Venue: Audio
DJs: Chus + Ceballos, Ben Seagren, Dean Samaras
Music: house, techno, tech-house
Cover: $10 Presale
Undoubtedly, Chus & Ceballos are the most solid, professional duo from Spain. Hailed worldwide for their excellent production works, including official remixes for world-renowned artists like Madonna or Shakira, they display a remarkable versatility enabling them to play in small clubs to life-size festivals. Their marathon DJ sets capture their genuine Iberican character, while their blend of styles between House and Techno lie in perfect harmony, accentuating the unmistakable beat of the percussions.

Event: High Sierra Music presents Cabin Fever Boogie: Turkuaz and The Nibblers
Venue: The New Parish
DJs: Turkuaz, The Nibblers
Music: funk, soul
Cover: $15-20
High Sierra Music brings you Cabin Fever Boogie, a night full of so much soul and funk, you won't know what to do with yourself. Brooklyn's own Turkuaz, the 9 member band that features multi-instrumentalists and singers, graces the stage, bringing their high energy and Motown infused grooves along with them. They'll be joined Sacramento group, The Nibblers, whose soulful sounds and horn laced tracks are the perfect accompaniment to Turkuaz and this night full of funk. (CQ)

Event: Make It Funky 2 Year Anniversary w/ 40 Thieves
Venue: Monarch
DJs: 40 Thieves, Fortune, OneMoHit, Jay Handles
Music: house, disco, funk, spacey
Cover: $10-15
Back in 2008, 40 Thieves put together an instant classic of a record with their remake of "Don't Turn It Off". I wish they've been more active, their music is delicious, but these guys keep true to the spirit of their city, and they haven't been in much of a rush. The material they do deal out here and there over the years, though, is always a delight. Ultra spacey, acidified, loose, cheeky vibes is the sound here. Do yourself a favor and check out their LP that they came out with last year, out on Leng - "The Sky Is Yours", you'll see what I mean. So there's a treat of a booking to mark the Make It Funky 2 Year Anniversary, and the Make It Funky residents will taking the decks for the rest of the night. It's funky! Enjoy! (AO)

Event: Sure Thing - Minimal Wave and Cititrax Showcase
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Veronica Vasicka, Silent Servant, An-i, Justin Anastasi, Rachel Aiello, Aaron J
Music: 80s, new wave, synth wave, techno, electro
Cover: $18-25
Many are familiar with Silent Servant - the Sandwell District member has earned himself quite the reputation in the techno community. Veronica Vasicka and her Minimal Wave label, however, seem to yet remain fairly under the radar. They do techno, for sure - yes, PW will be technoing out tonight - but the label started out as a collection of New Wave-and-the-like tapes from 30 years ago and they haven't strayed too far from that quite yet. So! Check out three huge players bringing you a night of all that. Silent Servant will be there, An-i is actually Lee Douglas, and though I've never heard a Veronica Vasicka set before, considering she's the force driving this whole thing, I can't help but think it's going to be quite the treat tonight. Support from Justin Anastasi (Surface Tension), Rachel Aiello and Aaron J. (AO)

Event: The Rock-It Scientists
Venue: Harlot
DJs: The Rock-It Scientists
Music: top 40, hip-hop, electro, pop remixers
Cover: $tba
The remix duo known as The Rock-It Scientists take over Harlot on Friday for a night full of dancing fun. Known for packing dancefloors, The Rock-It Scientists do just that, rock every party they play. Their poppy blend of top 40 hits mixed with hip-hop and electro make them fun to dance to, while their high energy makes them fun to watch. Be sure to wear your dancing shoes, as you can't help but dance once these two get behind the decks. (CQ)

Venue: Mighty
DJs: DJ Icey, DJ Zach Moore, Motion Potion, Vitamindevo, Matt Haze, Shouts!, DJ Phleck, U9lift, Snarkle, Flytrap
Music: breaks, house, electro, techno

It's time yet again for the Ice Breakers Ball, celebrating 9 years of winter white goodness. And of course, this party wouldn't be complete without DJ Icey keeping things funky behind the decks. He'll be joined by Space Cowboy DJ Zach Moore, as well as local heroes Motion Potion, Vitamindevo, Matt Haze, Shouts!, DJ Phleck, U9lift, Snarkle and Flytrap, each throwing down bass-laden beats to raise funds for the Janky Barge. Don't forget to don your finest white attire and prepare to frolic through the snow at this years' Ice Breakers Ball. (CQ)

Event: Gabrielle Walter-Clay
Venue: Slims
DJs: Gabrielle Walter-Clay
Music: funk, jazz, r&b, soul
Cover: $15, with dinner $39.95
Gabrielle Walter-Clay was born and raised in San Francisco, California. She received formal training from the San Francisco Girls Chorus from ages 7-16, and continues her training and music education now at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Gabrielle is an old soul who got her inspiration to sing from some of the greats. She grew up listening to music anywhere from Motown and Old School R&B to Classic Rock and Folk, but was particularly influenced by a few artists including Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, and Marvin Gaye. Neo-Soul and Jazz began to influence her more as she developed her own taste and style, and artists like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill were added to her list of greats. Gabrielle is beginning to write her own music, and attempts to find a balance between the old and the new, using influence from the past while creating a new and fresh vibe. She works hard to make her lyrics inspire others, ignite passion and/or nostalgia in listeners and take them to another place. No matter the genre or style, the soul and truth in her voice is unmistakable. Stay tuned as this young, up and coming artist continues to grow and develop… you will be glad that you did!

Event: Horse Meat Disco
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Horse Meat Disco
Music: nu-disco, disco
Cover: $15-20
Lights Down Low is getting eclipsed tonight by the talent they're bringing in: Horse Meat Disco. The collective, rather than just one artist, is famous for its serious disco vibes and its appeal to a glitzy and often queer-leaning audience. San Francisco sure loves that. Channeling the vibe of the early New York City scene, which focused on the new kind of disco we now call house, and the marginal communities present in New York, like gays, blacks and Puerto Ricans who were able to fully express themselves in these spaces outside of society. HMD keeps this vibe flowing, even as we flow almost FORTY years past these days of early house music. Feel the pride of community and the joy of disco with Horse Meat Disco! (ML)

Event: Julian Jeweils
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Julian Jeweils, Justin James, Mossmoss, Fabian Campos
Music: minimal, techno, tech-house
Cover: $10-20
Minus, the seminal minimal techno label that found itself spearheading a new aesthetic about a decade back, is coming to PW double strong this Saturday. Justin James and Julian Jeweils will likely be doing just what you'd expect from a pair of Minus DJs - trademark crystal clear kicks, bleeps, blips and all, all night long. Julian will be playing live, so all you gear freaks out there don't forget to take notes. Mental ones, that is! Don't forget to dance. The hometown heroes of the evening will be Mossmoss and Fabian Campos - get there early cuz those guys are always a treat! (AO)

Event: Oliver Dollar
Venue: Audio
DJs: Oliver Dollar, CJ Larsen
Music: house, tech-house
Cover: $10 Presale
The past 3 years have seen Oliver Dollar's name gradually build to a recognizable staple in house music. 2014 is already looking like a huge year for the Berlin-based House staple. He's released a remix for the Beatport smash 'Shake That' by Marlon Hoffstadt & Dansson on Pete Tong's new imprint FFRR along side Shadow Child, Blonde and Jesse Rose out on March 26th. Collaborations over the past 12 months have been key, releasing with Cajmere on his label Cajual and also being part of his Green Velvet album on Relief Records 'Dance To My Beat' which has been a huge success. 2014 has also seen Oliver Dollar reunite with Swiss Jazz House aficionado Jimi Jules for their anticipated debut release on the mighty Defected, out March 24th which stayed at number 1 on the Beatport Top 100 for over 4 weeks. Also in the mix for Oliver are world wide parties with Defected, from Ibiza to London across the year and his debut artist album. Catch this rising-star tonight at Audio.

Event: The Show: Space Cowboys

Event: Honey Soundsystem pres. Prosumer
Venue: Mighty
DJs: Prosumer, Jason Kendig, Jackie House, Josh Cheon, Robot Hustle
Music: house, nu-disco, tech-house
Cover: $15-20
Prosumer has become a household name thanks to his Panoramabar residency during his time in Berlin, his tendency to produce great records as well as being a DJ who plays worldwide in some top locations. His music can be anywhere from disco-tinged house to lush landscapes or beach-friendly vibes. We can be sure that for tonight's Honey Soundsystem, his style will fit right in with the house-friendly vibes of the popular local collective (although beginning a world takeover in Chicago) which promotes a love of timeless sounds, looks, and good looking men (aMEN!). Prosumer will be surrounded by a bevvy of top Honey talent like Jason Kendig - the local now almost a star in his own right, as well as other Honey residents like Jackie House, Josh Cheon and Robot Hustle. It's a three-day weekend, so that means it's time to party on Sunday! (ML)

Event: WERD
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Christ Nitti, Zoz
Music: tech-house
Cover: $5
Sunday's most popular and trustworthy party gets a boost from a three-day weekend which leaves a whole lot more people ready to throw down tonight. As usual, WERD keeps in top form by boosting it's residents like the local luminary Zoz, whose deep and tech house vibes can make the dance floor shine like a lucky penny. Tonight's headliner is Chris Nitti, a hometown hero in his local Washington D.C. Both of these DJs are partial to their own hometown scenes, and that usually means more focus on finding the best music, understanding party vibes, and really leading the crowd. Enjoy their quality this fine Sunday evening. Hey, stay out late and live a little! (ML)
