Event: Infected Mushroom - FungusAmongUs Tour
Venue: Regency Ballroom
DJs: Infected Mushroom, Liam Shy
Music: psytrance, goa trance
Cover: $20-35
Israeli is a place that is known for its psytrance. The genre there can range from full-on goa to darkpsy much in the same way our house music is fractured into tech-house, deep house, dub techno and everything in between. While you may not have known this fun fact, nor might you have known that Infected Mushroom hails from the Middle East and are sometimes considered the originators of the entire psytrance genre, there is the certainty that you have heard of this duo for their notoriety with your hippie friends or those more discerning to a larger range of electronic sounds. While some might call them the Phish for the electronic subset, this talented pair make palatable and danceable sounds for everyone. This holiday season give the gift of psychedelia with their new and special 3d mapping visuals, landscaped onto 'pods'. Not to mention you can make your house friends wonder why it is that acid music is named for the 808-heavy brand of house and not this stuff. Support from local psytrance guru Liam Shy. (ML)

Event: Jackhammer Disco pres. DJ. T
Venue: Public Works
DJs: DJ T, Bells & Whistles, Mozghan
Music: deep house, minimal
Cover: $15-20
DJ T is famous in the house world for starting one the top international labels, Get Physical while continuing to support his own artistic pursuits with records and DJ sets galore worldwide. DJ T seems to be one of the scene's largest proponents of 'deep' sounds and something he calls 'minimal booty house'. His travels have been bringing him out of Germany since the early 2000s, and most recently, T played at the spring edition of the popular Desert Hearts festival although he always finds time for hometown sets in Berlin where he will regularly play at house haven Panoramabar. If you're a fan of the German house sound, this is your night to boogie with a master. (ML)

Event: Questlove
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Questlove, Deejay Theory, Gordo Cabeza
Music: hip-hop, funk, house, soulful things
Cover: $15-25
Yes yes, this Saturday Questlove will be rolling through, none other than the charismatic, super-talented drummer of the Roots himself. The Roots have come to be one of the most respected groups in hip-hop today. Coming out of Philly, playing live - very uncharacteristic of a hip-hop group - and eventually helping to ignite the neo-soul movement that's so prevalent at the moment. These days you'll find them acting as Jimmy Fallon's house band on The Tonight Show - and if you ask me, I'd say Mr. Fallon is one hell of a lucky host to have them playing for him. He'll be off his drumming throne and in front of the decks this time, but there's no doubting he's got some great records in his bag. Check it out! (AO)

Event: Stacey Pullen
Venue: Harlot
DJs: Stacey Pullen, Rooz, Bo
Music: techno, house, tech-house, dance
Cover: no cover b4 11pm w/ RSVP, $5-15 otherwise
Harlot will likely be as techno as it gets this weekend with NYE landing in the middle of the week. Stacey Pullen hails from Detroit's second wave of techno. An able producer for sure with a nice handful of releases under his belt, on the decks is where Stacey truly shines. Coming of age under the mentorship of Derrick May, watching him piece together the tapes to his weekly radio show and taking in the ample knowledge all around him in the mecca of techno that Detroit was and is - Stacey now finds himself a very respected DJ for those in the know, mixing with flawless technical capability and consistently flooring crowds with his selections. The rest of the night will be held down by the very capable regulars Rooz and Bo, of Deep Blue and Disco Knights respectively. Talking with fellow Movement attendees earlier this year, Stacey Pullen consistently came up as a favorite set, so though the name may not be familiar, this isn't one to miss if you can help it. Event: Werd
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Zach Walker, Jonathan Will, Rachel Torro
Music: house, electro, techno
Cover: $5 presale
In celebration of the new year, WERD is hosting it's last 2014 event. Teaming up with Pink Mammoth and Monarch, this last WERD features Zach Walker and Jonathan Will from PM, each dropping funky beats. They're bringing the casual, laidback vibe that is synonymous with Pink Mammoth, which is perfect since this is a warm-up NYE event and not the actual night that 2014 turns into 2015. They'll be joined by Rachel Torro, who adds her own signature sound to the night. Keep things light and casual this Sunday with WERD at their pre-NYE party. You can just think of this as practice for the real thing. (CQ)

Event: Honey Sunset NYE
Venue: Gray Area Arts & Tech
DJs: Lee Douglass, Solar, Galen, Jackie House, Josh Cheon, Robot Hustle
Music: tech-house, house
Cover: $35-40

You know it's New Years when two of your favorite local crews join up for an event. Yeah, sure, that sounds like everything going on but this one is Sunset, famous for their campout and season open and closers, and Honey Soundsystem, the premiere gay house crew that appeals to leather daddies and SF princesses alike. With music coming from Sunset and Honey residents - who have each become famous in their own right - Lee Douglass, Berlin-based producer who is helping to put this party on the map. It even won a spot in Resident Advisor's 'Best of US NYE' feature! The final character rounding out the night is Gray Area Arts & Tech, one of the newest venues on the scene whose intimate vibe and artistic setting has already made for some great events, with more promising ones to come in the new year. With these party masters on your side, this is no doubt one of the best options of the evening.(ML)

Event: Housepitality NYE - The Interstellar Discotech
Venue: F8
DJs: Derek Plaslaiko, Dave Aju, Secret Studio, Bob Campbell, The Chug Dealers
Music: deep house, tech-house, chillout
Cover: $30+

Housepitality knows how to have a party. So when New Year's Eve landed on a Wednesday night this year, the House Pit crew knew how to stand up to the challenge. Doing their standard tomes of inviting some of the hottest names in (mostly) American underground house scenes. Tonight, the crew is bringing Derek Plaslaiko, who made huge waves after his 12 hour Boiler Room heated up the airwaves. The man knows what he's doing and he's doing it for the devoted House Pit crew this New Year's. Adding to tonight's roster is local favorite gone Berliner (typical) who always is ready to come back to his home and lend his exceptional talents that have brought him from local love to global greatness. Apart from these headliners, local collections will be holding it down in the back room, with chill out vibes from The Chug Dealers (Mike Bee, Joel Conway, Jason Greer, and JP Soul). To boot, the still moderately priced VIP ticket to the event will get you entry into the 6am Black Magic Disko Party with Afrikan Science. Now that's a real party. Join your friends and family and bring in this New Year's like you bring in each Thursday. Because you know you've been partying on every Wednesday like it's New Years. (ML)

Event: Mars Bar NYE
Venue: Mars Bar
DJs: Danny Buddah, Antonio Manigrassi, Didje Kelli
Music: house
Cover: $15

Come celebrate New Year's Eve at Mars Bar if you're looking for an intimate setting featuring deep sexy soulful house. Danny (Buddah) Morales from New York will be brining in the new year like Mars has never seen. Danny's signature style is well known in Gotham City. From his early days in world famous Paladium, to jet setting around the globe, he's become the world-class DJ he is today. To add some international flare - DJ Antonio Manigrassi comes in from Italy. And of course, Mars' very talented resident Didje Kelli who we all know from the many notorious SF events above and below ground, brings it all together for one night to remember.

Event: Monarch NYE
Venue: Monarch
DJs: Click Click, The Lovemakers (live), DJ M3 & Erik Deutsch, Richie Panic, Corey Sizemore, Shiny Objects, Lisbona, Papa Lu, Mozhgan, Tasho, Cole, Alvaro
Music: house (disco, funky), minimal, electro, techno, electropop, new wave
Cover: $40

It wouldn't be a New Years celebration if Monarch wasn't hosting an event for your dancing pleasure. Join Monarch on Wednesday as it welcomes a bevvy of DJs and musicians that'll help ring in the new year. There's a good mix of local and national talent, so if you're still looking for something to do, Monarch's got the party for you. German's own Click Click hits the stage, bringing his signature minimal sound, full of delicious techno, house and nu disco. Performing as well are local heroes The Lovemakers, who'll be performing live. Their blend of new wave and synthpop are fan favorites and the group performed well throughout the 2000's. Followers of The Lovemakers know what a treat this is, as the band hasn't performed together since 2009. Also on deck are DJ M3 & Erik Deutsch, who combine forces to form Keyboards and Richie Panic, each full of high energy and bass-heavy beats for your listening enjoyment. This is just a taste of who's playing, but you gotta attend for the full lineup. (CQ)

Event: NYE with Mayer Hawthorne and more
Venue: Public Works
DJs: Mayer Hawthorne, J Boogie, Afrolicious Sound System, Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist
Music: hip-hop, rnb, soul, funk, house
Cover: $30-60

This New Years Eve Public Works gets a little funky with a DJ set from Mayer Hawthorne - likely one of the better clubs to hit up this time if you're rolling with a crew not so accustomed to strictly four-to-the-floor electronic sounds. With a love for motown that is worn on his sleeve and a knack for packaging older influences into catchy hooks and a clean aesthetic, it's easy to get how successful Mayer Hawthorne's become. He's released extensively on Stones Throw and has been collaborating incessantly with everyone from Erkyah Badu to Amy Winehouse - R.I.P. - to the club slayers that are Detroit Swindle. The rest of the night sees both rooms soundtracked by the likes of J Boogie, Afrolicious, and Ren, a nicely catered lineup that will keep the dancefloor funky and not toooo techno - not that there really is such a thing as too techno for me personally. Also, champagne until 10:30! Enjoy! (AO)

Event: Nocturnal Code NYE
Venue: Pandora's Box
DJs: Taster Peter, Mossmoss, Lisa Rose, Halloran, Cavalier
Music: house, techno, tech-house
Cover: $30+ presale

Avoid the shit-show and ring in the new year with Nocturnal Code Masquerade NYE party. Getting his start as the former drummer for the hard-core Italian band "Tasters" Taster Peter's musical passions range violin to double bass, from guitar to percussions. The influence of the band and his musical evolution led him finally on the analog and digital machines with the goal of the production of electronic music. He begins to produce the first tracks in the studio, and his attitude was instantly felt in love by Adam Beyer, Dubfire, Richie Hawtin, 2000 and One, James Zabiela, Sven Vath and Mauro Picotto who played his tracks in the clubs and festivals around the world. Today he is part of some of the finest record labels in the world like Truesoul. His live sets literally burn the dance floors, during his performance he uses to remix instantaneously his tracks and loops together in a new way each time, giving to every performance a unique experience!

Music: glitch, hip-hop, house, electro, techno, dnb, trance
Cover: $55-135

In SF, New Years Eve is a two day event that begins not on December 31st, but actually on the 30th. Sea of Dreams, one of the largest NYE celebrations held in the Bay Area, is the brainchild of AnonEvents, SunsetSF and Another Planet. These three companies came together to create a night full of three stages of music on two nights. The first night features the musical stylings of The Glitch Mob and Break Science with Pumpkin doing double duty and performing Tuesday and Wednesday, as Pretty Lights headlines both nights. The rest of the lineup, which includes Flying Lotus, Beats Antique and Lettuce, to name a few, are performing on the actual last night of the year 2014. Sea of Dreams never disappoints, with both nights featuring quality music and theatrics. A special treat for the second night includes Trapeze DJs and burlesque performers, as well as The Mom DJs and a Silent Frisco, each making your final night of 2014 that much more spectacular. (CQ)

Event: Black Magic Disko's New Year's Revival
Venue: F8
DJs: Afrikan Sciences, Silky, Blakkat, Conor + Back Room Boogie crew
Music: tech-house, deep house
Cover: $20 w/o VIP ticket to Houspitality NYE

Black Magic Disko is teaming up with their Wednesday friends to host a party/continued party for the morning ravers and day time dancers. Whether you choose to stay up all night and into the morning or sleep through the hectic (read: expensive) night time offerings, this is a party for you to boogie down in. BMD heads Bob and Trev always know where to search for top DJs that you maybe have or have not heard of and this bright first day of the year will feature Afrikan Sciences, an ex-San Franciscan whose sound goes all over the board but remains in boogie fashion. Joining will be Blakkat, crew friend from LA who helps to define what it means to have a West Coast sound. Sunset's Conor and Frankie Knuckles tutored Silky round out the front room while names like Dirtie Blonde and Victor Vega set up a chill yet dance-y back room vibe. Guten morgen San Francisco and happy new year! (ML)

Event: Breakfast of Champions
Venue: Mighty
DJs: Anthony Mansfield, Shiny Objects, Derek Hana, Julius Papp, Space Cowboy DJs, and so many more
Music: breaks, house, techno, progressive
Cover: $25-30

One of the longest running New Year's Day events in San Francisco is often called it's most beloved. Starting at 6am on New Year's Day, you're welcome to show up as your other parties wind down, or catch some zzzzs before arriving for another fun filled day of dancing. While the sun of last year's New Year's cannot be promised, the party people always provide plenty of bright rays for a shiny new year. Expect another collection of Burn-friendly folk here with DJ support provided mostly by local heros and soundcamp champs. Everyone from Space Cowboys to Disco Knights, Pink Mammoth, Brass Tax, Silent Frisco, Salted and FnF will be there to ring in the new year for the SF dance community. Tents will be up so the event is rain or shine as well as 2 indoor stages in Mighty itself. This not to mention the food trucks for your hungry raving bellies. Entrance on Alameda Street. Note that the Space Cowboys will be running a food drive so bring your canned goods! (ML)

Event: Danny Tenaglia
Venue: Audio
DJs: Danny Tenaglia, Nikita & Mark Slee, Papa Lu, Bo & Rooz, Ben Segren & Dean Samara
Music: underground house & techno
Cover: $15

Audio is taking you on a journey with the legendary, Danny Tenaglia, to bring in 2015 the right way! The tale of Danny Tenaglia's love affair with music, and the world's subsequent romance with him, is one of the critical veins in the body of dance music. He is every dancer's secret discovery; a random purchase at the record store, a reluctant night out that unexpectedly turned magic. Explosive success came not behind a major label release, or a world tour, or a radio hit remix: It happened when enough people had the private Tenaglia experience for themselves. Share the magic with your friends Day 1 2015.

Event: Fresh As a Daisy New Years Day
Venue: Monarch
DJs: DJ Three, Jeno, Conor, Bells & Whistles, Jason Greer, James Glass, Jonah Sharp, Anthony Mansfield, Davi A, Wichita Ron
Music: techno, house, electro, breaks, dnb
Cover: $20

If you're not too tired from your New Years Eve festivities, Monarch is hosting a New Years Day event that's full of banging beats. Starting bright and early at 6 am, Fresh As a Daisy is the perfect event to celebrate the first full day of the new year. Pittsburgh's own DJ Three blends house and techno with cutting edge technology and sound, creating his own signature beats. No stranger to traveling, DJ Three holds residencies in Florida and New York and has secured guest spots in SF and at UK's Fabric. He'll be joined by Jeno, a staple in Bay Area music for the last two decades and Conor, who brings his twisted humor and dark beats. Not to mention that Bells & Whistles, Jason Greer and James Glass, to name a few, are also slated to DJ for those of you who're marathon partiers and last through the night. Be sure to get there early, as this event only goes until 2pm and start your new year Fresh As a Daisy. (CQ)

Event: Sunset NYD w/ Roy Davis Jr
Venue: Mezzanine
DJs: Roy Davis Jr, Matrixxman, Benjamin Vallery, Solar, Galen, J-Bird
Music: house, detroit house, techno, tech-house, dance
Cover: $10-25

Maybe you're still going, or maybe you're an early bird, but Sunset's starting things off at 2pm January 1st! Grab some grub - food will happen - and get down with the Sunset DJs and a nice selection of special guests. The headliner this time is Roy Davis Jr, a Chicago house legend equally at home making full-out vocal house as well as the weirder sides of acid house. An exceptionally prolific producer with four pages to his Discogs page, Roy replaced DJ Pierre back in the day when Phuture was still kicking, and these days he can be seen getting pretty funky, check out his latest release on Clone Jack for Daze - a personal favorite label of mine at the moment. The local love is lovely as well - Matrixxman practically makes this a double headliner. The up-and-coming producer moved to SF semi-recently and has been working with Vin Sol on the Soo Wavey label, helping to really put SF on the map for dance music. A very talented producer who's received explicit praise from Get Physical head DJ T, and a fine DJ at that as well - you gotta hear him if you haven't yet. Benjamin Vallery will likely bring his bag of deep, deep, deeep techish house tunes along with him, always a treat, and the Sunset DJs are always a treat. Oh, and don't forget, there be food trucks!
