Before
Thievery
Corporation goes on stage they get in a circle and do
a cheer but in a mellow way like some stoned baseball team.
Counting down 1,2,3, they throw their hands up and yell Jah
Rastafari! The production duo consists of Rob and Eric who
reside in DC with their club and label Eighteenth Street Lounge.
On stage they usually have a small entourage including a drummer
and two Rastas they record samples with for their tracks.
Riding high off their new CD, The Richest Man in Babylon
comes more bossa nova beats and dub that you have learned
to love. Date: Sunday 11/24 (sold OUT!) &

Your Favorite DJ Savior
DJ
Shadow (A.K.A Josh Davis) is a Bay Area native with strong
musical ties to funk, soul, rock, ambient, jazz and used-bin
incendentalia (READ anything that's cheap and lying around
to sample). One of the innovators of the instrumental
hip-hop sound, Shadow has collaborated with UK artists
DJ Krush and Octogan (forming U.N.K.L.E) and has recently
released The Private Press, another excellent CD
of just good fuckin' music to chill or think about ...where

Bring
that Beat Back!
The
Fillmore will be blowing up this Sunday with the Cali Comm
tour featuring DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN. The legendary Bay
area MC who rocks that hip-hop hippie-man vibe. Tired of "gangsta"
rap? Check this. The Irony is that Ice Cube, his cousin, helped
him get his start. He has tried to keep this tid-bit out of
the press. Instead of riding on the coat tails of his cuz,
he chose to make his own name with no gun talk, just sick,
funky rhymes and hard beats. Lets not forget that Del has
placed himself in great company for this show with People
Under the Stairs, Aceyalone, Lifesavas, and Motion Man with
Kutmasta Kurt. If ya'll ain't heard of Motion Man, it's time
that you did. Bringing it back ol' skool rhyming style and
recently receiving some serious radio play. Date: 11/24, Time:

Asshole
Monologues Return
Taking
life too seriously can really hurt sometimes. That's why the
Asshole Monologues have returned to to prove there's no better
remedy for what ails you than laughter. The show runs for
four weekends, featuring a different cast each time its
performed, and bills itself as " a comedy for anyone who has
one, knows one, or is one". Its really a varied, eclectic
approach to defining the significance of that word, ASSHOLE,
by a number of recognizable stand-up and improve comedians
and television actors from the L.A. area. The best part
is that you can feel even better by knowing that all the proceeds
from every night go directly to the Northern
California chapter of the Chrohn's and Colitis Foundation.

Granted,
Aphex twin will not be there to do his version of St.
Etienne's song, but the fact that he chose to remix this
group's work should tell you something about the crossover appeal
they have with the DJ set. Their latest album "Finisterre" is
peppered with different approaches to chilled out club
pop, electronic and organic. Opening up for this long-running London
trio is Dot
Allison, former lead singer of now-defunct One Dove, and
a singer whose career seems to resemble Beth Ortons (even landing
on her record label). She also carries high accolades from the
UK dance community for her work, having recorded with the likes
of Massive Attack, so it will be worth the effort to get to
Bimbo's

Just
as crazy as Ol' Dirty Bastard, but without the crack, its
prolific, porn-crazy MC Kool Keith (aka. Dr. Octagon,
Dr. Doom, Big Willie, Black Elvis, Poppa Large) dropping
science on an enthusiastic crowd at Slim's. Oakland's own
Zion I supports with his enlightened wisdom, uplifting vibes,
and lyrical waxing about the spiritual elements
of life and hip-hop. A recent collaboration with Planet
Asia on his new album has given way to a hot new single
called "Revolution".
He truly represents the Bay Area's underground conscience,
independently producing his own music for the last several
years, garnering much love and respect from his fans and
other MC's along the way. (CW)

Lost

the occasional Goth. This crowd is trying so hard NOT to be
hipsters (it's the latest trend) but they fail miserably.
The dance floor is packed with fun drunk cute people getting
down to hip hop jams old and knew. This night is tight but the
only thing that bummed me out is when Satva turned down the
music to Biz Markie's "You say he's just a friend" so everyone
can sing, I was the only one singing, this was unfortunate for
the rest of the crowd as well. (JP) |

7 from the UK has been compared with Air but they have less
of an electro synthy feel and more of a soulful jazz sound.
Comprised of childhood friends Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker
they both worked in a music studio after college contributing
to material for Robert Plant and the Pet Shop Boys. But it wasn't
until a friend offered them a chance to remix Radiohead's "Climbing
Up the Walls" that they got their break. Giles peterson of BBC
Radio 1 eventually approached the duo for some remixes and the
rest is history. Their debut album, Simple Things received accolades
throughout Europe and is continuing to gain popularity in the
US. (JP) |

This

It was one of the most funked up and well attended daytime grooves
back when Mark Farina and John Howard spun. After the move from

lovingly named the Stopmy Dig-in, when it changed to a night
time groove. The promoters have been doing their own thing in
