Happy Anniversary To Us. Cake for Everyone!
It's the Nitevibe Buzz's First Anniversary! 52 Issues... and from such humble beginnings. Next week we will let you know how you can celebrate with us plus you can expect some dramatic surprises. Remember you only have six days left to vote for your favorite DJ. With our anniversary and Top 10 DJ Poll - I almost forgot about Halloween! “I need a really great costume because we have Halloween for 2 weeks this year,” said my raver friend as she stripped naked in coat check to try on a Wonder Woman costume. She’s right. We celebrate this weekend (as you will notice from the very exaggerated weekly pix) and next week too! You may have to wear it 8 times so choose your costume like you choose your DJ - staying power! (JP)

Keep Your Ear to the Streets
The 22-year-old Brit Mike Skinner AKA (The Streets) has self-produced an arresting debut rooted in the vintage American hip-hop style he was weaned on. Original Pirate Material unfolds on two levels. Lyrically, it’s a journey—a day in the life of an everyday “geezer.” Sonically, its collision of styles; equal parts two-step, dub, drum ‘n bass, house and, above all hip-hop. Skinner represents the moment when an artist as student of the times, re-imagines a combination of sounds completely correct and, until now, undone. With his deliberate, thickly accented, flow, no one can rightly suggest Skinner is the UK’s answer to Eminem. Imagine the Massive Attack school of spoken rap infused with a hit of something that makes you bounce. As a Mercury Prize nominee, Original Pirate Material, a collection of songs whose stories ignore the bling-bling lifestyle, and instead remain street level, has made a lot of noise across the pond. This is The Streets’ first tour stateside. Event: The Streets Date: 10/22/02 Time: 8:30 PM Place: The Justice League Admission: $10 (advance) $12 (at the door) More Info (Jesse Zeifman)

The Truth About Me'Shell Ndgeocello
Contrary to popular belief, "Ndegeocello" is not French for "angry black bisexual," but means "free as a bird" in Swahili.  It also accurately describes Me'Shell Ndgeocello's brand of funk-inspired soul.  The first female artist on Madonna's Maverick label, Me'Shell's 1994 debut single, "If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night)," annoyed cheating men everywhere but impressed Chicago house producers like Lil' Louis of "French Kiss" fame who remixed the steamy hit.  Keeping up with the times, Me'Shell's latest album, "Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape," contains material remixed by Missy Elliot.  Me'Shell's refusal to let the double platinum shackles of showbiz inhibit her musical conscience has generated respect for her across the industry (she's earned 3 Grammy nominations and played bass for The Rolling Stones).  It also makes her music empowering and undeniably "Ndegeocello."  Date: October 26, 2002, Time:  Doors open at 8:00pm--Show starts at 9:00pm, Place: The Fillmore, Admission: $25 (LM)

Electroclash Tour
Heard all that hype about "no-wave"? Punk, or some mutated version of it, has reappeared in the form of the Electroclash 2002 tour, featuring Peaches, Chicks on Speed, W.I.T., Tracy and the Plastics, and DJ Larry Tee, a veteran producer for Rupaul and the festival's organizer. Simply stated, its dance music for rock people. Its also a scene that's quickly gaining steam, enjoying the ironies of being sleazy, hip, and rebellious all at the same time. The tunes sound like a mix between 80's synth bands and the aggression, and raw sexuality, of 70's punk. Come catch the media frenzy surrounding these products of the Williamsburg arts scene. Date: 10/27  Time: 8pm Place: Fillmore Auditorium  Admission: $2o, More Info (CW)

Event: The Streets
Venue: Justice League
DJs: The Streets
Music: hip-hop, two-step, garage
Cover: $15
Mike Skinner and his crazy tag-team o' Birmingham Brits invade the Justice League tonight with the stoney two-step garage sounds of The Streets. They've just came out with their debut album, Orginal Pirate Material, that's pretty much about being young and broke in the UK, which is the story of our lives these days. Instead of rap being backed up by hip-hop beats, Mike's funky words are in tone with a two-step rhythm that will keep you bouncing on your toes all night. (GR)

Event: Taco Tuesdays
Venue: Border Cantina
DJs: M3, Anthony Garlic, Chulada

Do you think this crew of black-bean-loving DJs just throw this night because they get to eat for free? Hell no! They do it for the pure love of house music, the look on your face when you hear your favorite track and ofcourse, guacamole. Some of the biggest names in SF like Iz, Galen, Russel Vargas, Garth, Monty Luke have blessed this $2 taco-toting Mexican joint during happy hour. Shouldn't you? (JP)

Event: Mayonnaise
Venue: Skylark
DJs: Chonky T, Tonic,
Music: house
Cover: free
I went to this party where you were supposed to come as your favorite condiment. The usual suspects were there -  ketchup, mustard, A1 steak sauce, I was mayonnaise but lo and behold there was another mayonnaise at the party too. I didn't want to be unoriginal so I took my blue Best Foods get-up and hi-tailed it to Skylark where I was revered by all. The delicious house music had a funky deep groove and everyone seemed to know what mayonnaise is all about. Thank you sister DJs for keeping it lubricated for this long! (JP)

Event: The Redwine Social
Venue: Dalva
DJs: Toph One, Pause, Polywog, surprise guests
Music: breaks, hip-hop, rock, electro, house
Cover: free
Technically this night is free but I’ve had to pay way too many Thursday mornings after the debauchery that takes place up in that joint. In addition to the quality beats which range from Frank Sinatra to Koop and Eric B & Rakim, people end up throwing up, tagging on other people’s arms with sharpies and inviting street people into the bar to eat tamales. Oh wait that was just me. Anyway this night is full of surprise guests and memorable moments you can almost remember. (JP)

Mr. Scruff - love that guy. he was nice enough to conduct a mutually drunk interview with me at a bar in the Mission where we touched on very important issues ranging from Madonna (who loves his eccentric breakbeat quirky jazz) to his involvement with Ninja Tune to where the scene is going and what the UK superstar thinks of America. I left the tape recorder in the cab never to be seen again. Did any of you guys find it by chance? Anyway, Mr. Scruff AKA Andy Carthy blesses joypad to celebrate the release of his new album "Trouser Jazz". "Do you like it? Does it make you go wibbly. Does it frimble?" these are questions Mr. Scruff asks his audience in regard to his dancefloor friendly sound. From what I recall this guy is a genius artist as well as producer and DJ.
