Happy
Anniversary To Us. Cake for Everyone!
It's the Nitevibe Buzz's First Anniversary! 52 Issues... and from
such humble
beginnings. Next week we will let you know how you
can celebrate with us plus you can expect some dramatic surprises.
Remember you
only have six days left to vote for your favorite DJ.
With our anniversary and Top 10 DJ Poll - I almost forgot about
Halloween! “I need a really great costume because we have Halloween
for 2 weeks this year,” said my raver friend as she stripped naked
in coat check to try on a Wonder Woman costume. She’s right. We
celebrate this weekend (as you will notice from the very exaggerated
weekly pix) and next week too! You may have to wear it 8 times
so choose your costume like you choose your DJ - staying power!

Keep
Your Ear to the Streets
The 22-year-old Brit Mike Skinner AKA (The Streets) has self-produced
an arresting debut rooted in the vintage American hip-hop style
he was weaned on. Original Pirate Material unfolds on two levels.
Lyrically, it’s a journey—a day in the life of an everyday “geezer.”
Sonically, its collision of styles; equal parts two-step, dub,
drum ‘n bass, house and, above all hip-hop. Skinner represents
the moment when an artist as student of the times, re-imagines
a combination of sounds completely correct and, until now, undone.
With his deliberate, thickly accented, flow, no one can rightly
suggest Skinner is the UK’s answer to Eminem. Imagine the Massive
Attack school of spoken rap infused with a hit of something that
makes you bounce. As a Mercury Prize nominee, Original Pirate
Material, a collection of songs whose stories ignore the bling-bling
lifestyle, and instead remain street level, has made a lot of
noise across the pond. This is The Streets’ first tour stateside.

The
Truth About Me'Shell Ndgeocello
Contrary to popular belief, "Ndegeocello" is not French for "angry
black bisexual," but means "free as a bird" in Swahili.
It also accurately describes Me'Shell Ndgeocello's brand of funk-inspired
soul. The first female artist on Madonna's Maverick label,
Me'Shell's 1994 debut single, "If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't
Last Night)," annoyed cheating men everywhere but impressed
Chicago house producers like Lil' Louis of "French Kiss" fame
who remixed the steamy hit. Keeping up with the times, Me'Shell's
latest album, "Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape," contains
material remixed by Missy Elliot. Me'Shell's refusal
to let the double platinum shackles of showbiz inhibit her musical
conscience has generated respect for her across the industry (she's
earned 3 Grammy nominations and played bass for The Rolling Stones).
It also makes her music empowering and undeniably "Ndegeocello."

Electroclash
Tour
Heard
all that hype about "no-wave"? Punk, or some mutated version of
it, has reappeared in the form of the Electroclash
2002 tour, featuring Peaches, Chicks on Speed, W.I.T.,
Tracy and the Plastics, and DJ Larry Tee, a veteran producer for
Rupaul and the festival's organizer. Simply stated, its dance
music for rock people. Its also a scene that's quickly gaining
steam, enjoying the ironies of being sleazy, hip, and rebellious
all at the same time. The tunes sound like a mix between
80's synth bands and the aggression, and raw sexuality, of 70's
punk. Come catch the media frenzy surrounding these products of
the Williamsburg arts scene. Date: 10/27

Do the Mind-Warp Again
For
ALL you Ninja Tune label fans, Amon
Tobin, the breakbeat jazz wizard of the 1990s sets
off his tour with the release of Out From Out Where.
Dark and rhythmically intense, Tobin's multi-layered bass
lines and rhythms are the equivalent of your mind warping
to the speed of sound. Orginally hailing from Brazil, Tobin is
one of the most influential artists of his time, he was inspired
by jazz at an early age and this influence seeped into the
1997 classic Bricolage. The next day, DJ
Food is serving up a sizzling platter of downtempo,
jazzy breaks, so be there for both nights, it surely will be a
mind-altering experience. Other artists include Prefuse 73 and
Bonobo. Event: Amon Tobin, Venue:

Mike Skinner and his crazy tag-team o' Birmingham Brits invade

Orginal Pirate Material, that's pretty much about being young

I went to this party where you were supposed to come as your favorite

A1 steak sauce, I was mayonnaise but lo and behold there was another
mayonnaise at the party too. I didn't want to be unoriginal so
I took my blue Best Foods get-up and hi-tailed it to Skylark where
I was revered by all. The delicious house music had a funky deep
groove and everyone seemed to know what mayonnaise is all about.
Thank you sister DJs for keeping it lubricated for this long!

street people into the bar to eat tamales. Oh wait that was just

thinks of America. I left the tape recorder in the cab never to

A crowd of veteran party people gather every Sunday to worship
in the house of soul also called the crazy-ass Endup. In addition
to Resident Ruben Mancias, NYC’s Franky Feliciano graces the place
with more house classics and soulful garage grooves that have
kept dance floors rocking for oh say, 15 –20 years. (JP)
