SF's
Top10 DJ Poll Update
Well we've had a definite reaction to our nominees. We've gotten
praise, heard from haters, and received thank you notes everyday
since the DJ poll began. Guess what guys? This list has nothing
to do with the staff at Nitevibe. It has to do with YOU and our
community of close to 40,000 subscribers.
As
of Tuesday 10/15, the top ten DJs include Mark Farina, Miguel
Migs, Ellen Ferrato, Jeno, David Harness, Garth, Dimitris Mykonos,
Julius Papp, David Coleman & Sen Sei and Laird. DJ Shadow
and Charlotte the Baroness are almost tie and moving up quickly
on Laird. The last 7 positions are always changing so make sure
you vote - it makes a difference! Thanks everyone for the overwhelming
response. P.S. Where are all my hip-hop heads at??!! Represent.
Poll closes Oct 28th. Vote

We
are the Fabuloids: SF Fashion Report
Ok so compared to New York and LA, the SF fashion scene has not
traditionally grabbed the attention of the world. Sure we may
show the Fall line in Fall when the rest of the world shows it
months prior and maybe our designers make pieces that you can
buy directly off the models because it’s the only one that
will ever exist…Are you catching on to the complete brilliance
here? We don’t give a fuck WHAT the rest of the fashion
world is doing! Continue

A
Hundred Days of Underworld
It
was the year of my semester abroad, Prince’s own infamous
1999, when I found myself in front of a London's popular Astoria,
buying some scalped $40 (25 pounds) tickets for the Underworld
, I was still all starry-eyed over Underworld’s Trainspotting
single “Born Slippy”, it was my first venture into
electronica music, a phase that would last till...heh, probably
forever. Karl Hyde's haunting vocals rolled over intricate
live mixed tracks with a humanity and moodiness not usually associated
with techno music. Darren Emerson and Rick Smith mixed it live,
strumming drum machines and tweeking the music in an electronic
symphony of techno sounds. Now, Underworld is in here at the
Warfield, as a duo (sans Darren Emerson, who has gone off to be
an international DJ star), touring off the waves of their new
album, A Hundred’s Days Off, and pushing me into that lovely
nostalgia for London again. Event: Underworld, Date: October
20, 2002, Time: 7:00pm doors open, 8:00pm show starts, Venue:
The Warfield, Cost: $25.00, Music: Electronica, techno. (GR)
Decompression
party
Does the alkaline dust of that alien planet we fondly
call Burning Man still have you high off life? The
Decompression Party is where we come to celebrate and mourn the
incredible experience we had in the desert. I'm hoping for an
appearance from the Extra Action Marching band, who I ran
around wildly seeking my first night at Burningman (for reasons
that shall remain unknown this side of reality.) The Decompression
Party of Burning Man is a radically interactive exhibit (PARTY)
celebrating the effects of what happens when the most open-minded-not-afraid-to-challenge
life's conventions gather. Expect a colorful assortment of SF's
loony-toons at Cafe Cocomo this Sunday. The party is full of the
festival's camps, art, entertainers, DJs and friends. Playa wear
is absolutely encouraged. Date: 10/20 Time:
12pm-2am, Place: Cafe Cocomo, Admission:

Pollen
is here to fertilize your mind. A beautiful full color
magazine that features local visual and literary artists, each
volume has three issues and a idea thread that
runs throughout. Last years issues were Honey, Sprout, and
Forest. Pollen Media prints a thousand copies of each
issue and this party is to support the newest issue, Epiphany.
Live performances on Friday by Kristen Heavey's Element Dance
Theatre, musicians Oceana Bluskyes, El Pulpo, and short films
by Matt Goldman, James Jhun, and Stephanie Gerson. The main
party is on Saturday night with DJ's Rick Preston (Glasgo Underground),
Vasili, and Nman. That seems like plenty but there's more;
art installations by Sarah Necktonic and Allison Satre, as well
as a fire dancers and a few drag queens hosting the thing. Tons

Kinkyfunk
on the High Seas
Techno/trance
sensation Timo Maas headlines a special Spundae-Kinkyfunk
collaboration this Sunday for those in search of a fantastic
voyage. That's because this party takes places
on a boat called the "San Francisco Spirit" (not to be confused
with one of Jay-Z's many iced out yachts, but you get the picture).
It makes perfect sense that a guy like Timo who has been deejaying
since the ripe age of 13 and describes his style as "percussive
wet funk" would want to test how "wet" and "funky" the bass
can get as it splashes off the waves of the Bay. Known for
his mixing skills and for being the only kick-ass deejay out of
Buckeburg, Germany, Timo is joined by his fellow deutscheman (that's
German for "home boy") Haktan O'Nal, (Four Twenty Recordings).
Some Spundae and Kinkyfunk regulars will also be operating
the wheels of steel. The VIP Captain's deck features
DJ Gilligan and Skipper Too (just kidding) Don't forget the
after-party at Club Six! Place: Pier
9 (Broadway & Embarcadero), Time: 6:30pm
until 11:00pm, Music: Trance/Techno/House, Cover:
$40 pre-sale. (LM)
Register,
Vote , Represent.
NYC's
outrageous rap duo the Beatnuts stop off at Slims to do two things:
1) to drop some hard ass raps and 2) to get some people registered
to vote. Its all part of the Rap
the Vote tour, a grassroots initiative mobilizing
the hip hop community to become more politically active by getting
the underground crowd to surface, and make their voices be heard.
The "intoxicated demons" Psycho Les, and Junkyard Juju, have done
cuts with Big Pun, Fat Joe, Method Man, Jungle Bros...etc...(probably
even Schooly D wherever he is), and have been able to maintain
the balance between the mainstream and the underground for over
ten years now. They also represent the Latin influence in the
ridiculously competitive NY rap scene. Supporting acts, Non Phixion,
and local fave Vinroc help get the crowd on their feet before
these two hit the stage. Date: Tues. 10/15, Place:
Slims, Time: 9pm-?, Cover: $20,

Art
Decko
The
Culture Cache Gallery is doing the most progressive shows of any
gallery in the city. Last month they had a show featuring
DJ Spooky painting while he mixed, and now a show dedicated
to the art of skateboards. Many artists are featured here
and the subject matter ranges from abstract expression to political
statements. More than just some stickers and those
bad copies of skate company logos you used to draw on your boards,
these artists express some of the most pressing issues our
culture is facing today with the immediacy and the vitality
of life in the city. As a whole the show covers
so much ground that no matter what your taste you'll find
some kid who pinned it to a skateboard. Event:

these guys especially Linden C's tribalesque "go ahead and just

said "...the music was nice I heard songs I haven't heard in years".
So you see it's not that SK prides itself on being old school.
They have all the new shit too - but the vibe has an old school

Love Affair by "getting erotic" at Hotel Ibiza this Saturday.
This event is hosted by Playboy Playmate Tina Jordan (That's Miss
March 2002 for all you folks with clean minds). I personally
prefer the intellectual type, but a small percentage of men (latest
polls show 93%) can get by on cleavage. People with A.D.D. can
leave their Ritalin at home because this party promises (1) A
live HBO film crew taping scenes for an upcoming show called the
"In Crowd" (2) A Freakyn Halloween/Masquerade Contest hosted by
more Playboy bunnies, and (3) a headlining set by DJ T8 (pronounced

from the unique brand of funky techno he developed
through his residency at the legendary London venue known
as "The End.". Mr. C once said that "tech house is the only
genre that isn't a genre." If that makes sense to you, it
probably doesn't surprise you that he also spent four weeks at
the top of the UK music charts for making a musical
tribute to the club drug ecstasy (I'd like to see Justin
Timberlake pull off that shit). Thump Radio wants you
to get to know this pioneer of the British rave scene

Ahhhh, it's Sunday and time to chill! Sit back and take
in some pure oxygen. Doesn't that sound oddly futuristic? Well
the ambient beats may too. Hear tracks that could even
get that annoying Dell guy on the commercial to relax. You
see the Oxygen Bar is much less a cheesy homeopathic gimmick
than it is a place to collect your thoughts and get ready to charge
out on your next mission. (JM)

Nobody parties like the NFL- just ask ex-Dallas Cowboy Michael
Irvin. Did you ever want to sleep with a professional football
player, and then go public with it afterwards in the hopes of
fame, fortune? Here's your chance: The Raiders are doing their
own brand of getting loose with an after party for their home
game on Sunday. Kick it with #84, wide receiver Jerry Porter,
and other members of the silver and black while DJ Mind Motion
takes control of the decks for East Bay influenced hip-hop. Believe
it or not, there's a dress code that's strictly enforced, seemingly
an attempt to weed out the riffraff. Do they know this is SF?

We
are the Fabuloids: SF Fashion Report
(Continued)
…SF’s
punk rock attitude toward fashion is the driving force behind
its creativity. The designers are not only having fun coupling
their shows with club nights and art shows, but they’re
doing it for the pure craft of designing. “I don’t
really want to be in Fred Segal,” claims handbag designer,
Kelly Tunstall. “If I get a big order I would have to hire
someone else to make them…” Kelly’s point is
that if she’s not doing it herself then why do it.
Is
this the prevailing attitude across all local fashion scenesters?
Of course not. You have the Macy’s Passport Show, the St.
John store openings and the society parties depicted in the new
“SF Paper” free fashion pub. But most of the quasi-celebrities
on that scene are old money families trying desperately to hold
on to an old paradigm of what the fashion glitterati should be.
They model themselves after Paris and New York but the truth is
a real scene like that has never existed here. Until San Francisco
starts putting up those runway tents in Goldengate Park for their
own, “Fashion Week,” it never will.
Here
lies the dilemma in our very creative underground fashion scene.
A disconnect exists between creativity and money (not a new theme).
Sure these local designers can get their wares in small boutiques
and on consignment, but in the big world of couture and international
retail shops, most will never be seen.
So
what are young fashion students isolated from the upper echelon
of society supposed to do? They make up their own scene, their
own way of showing their lines at events like Twice as Nice at
111 Minna, or Soul Kitchen at Club Six complete with International
DJ talent! If a big buyer
from Nordstrom’s happened to attend one of these parties
and wanted to place an order for 25 hand-distressed and hand-beaded
denim skirts, would these young designers even know what to do?
They can try.
Meet
the designers of Fabuloid.
These creative souls are out there attempting to brave the fashion
industry by making available one of a kind “vintage reinterpretations”
(ranging from $30 -$2500) Last week this collective threw 12 guerilla
fashion shows all over San Francisco. This week they have an official
(and legal) show at 111 Minna where you can buy what you like
right off the models. Make sure you donate $5 for a chance to
win a tube top which you are expected to model right on the spot!
Other
fashion multi taskers include party promoters, Mixed
Elements and Donovan.
They are attempting to shrink that disconnect between our local
designers, boutiques and consumers by putting on a fashion show
with YOU as the model. The party called Rendez Vous, offers a
list of stores offering special discounts for the event. Your
job is to support the fashion community by buying an outfit at
one of the listed stores then wearing it to the Rendez Vous party
this Saturday!
These
are just some of the ideas being executed because of San Francisco’s
growing fashion awareness and creativity. The more support and
awareness we give to these events the more San Francisco’s
economy and arts can grow together symbiotically. It’s time
for us to take our place as the new avante guardians! Stay tuned
for more fashion shows, designer info and events from Nitevibe.com.
