SF's
Annual Top10 Dj Poll
Is anyone NOT a Dj in SF? With all the nominees that came pouring
into our inbox for Nitevibe’s Top Ten DJ poll, I have to
wonder. San Francisco is rich with musical talent and diversity
and I certainly don’t want to be the one to make the difficult
Top 10 DJ decision. So It’s all up to you! Here are the
nominees. Please choose 10 DJs that you consider to be the most
worthy ambassadors to the beat. Remember the best DJ is not merely
the name you see most on flyers or who plays at the biggest events.
Sometimes the most talented DJs are found at the little bar around
the corner. Sometimes the least interesting Djs are headlining
at mega clubs. I want you to forget everything you heard and really
think about the music, who inspires you? Creates that special
connection to your heart? Makes your feet move? And mixes in that
track that has you believing just for a moment, that this complex
world makes sense…you know that feeling right? This is your
chance to give thanks for that sound that represents where you
come from and what you like. Who does it for YOU? The winners
will be announced in 3 weeks time. I know some of you receiving
this ARE the nominees so tell your devoted fans where they can
show their love for you and start voting now! Vote

Believe
the Hype - Public Enemy in SF
If Bob Marley
and Marvin Gaye were alive today and wanted to start a hip hop
group, that group would be P.E. (that’s “Public Enemy”
for all you hardcore Nelly/Ashanti fans). Like Bob and Marvin,
P.E. could always get the crowd moving even if they weren’t
particularly interested in their politically charged message. Frontman
Chuck D’s uncompromising lyrics, DJ Terminator X’s
amplified beats and the precise military choreography of Professor
Griff and the S-1-Ws (short for Security of the st World) are
enough to make any self-respecting white guy in a suit or khaki
sportin’ brother choke on his morning latte. Even the
most slapstick member of the group, Flava Flav, let you know what
“time” it was by wearing an exaggerated, oversized
clock on his neck rather than the diamond (AKA Bling Bling) chains
that many of today’s (and yesterdays) rappers proudly don
in order to show off that material wealth. Leave it to P.E.
to flip the script and make a fashion statement . . . well . .
. an actual statement. Public Enemy dominated the rap game
in late 1980s at a time when “Bitches and Hoes” was
not yet a household term. When N.W.A. (Niggas With Attitude) were
screaming “Fuck Tha Police,” Public Enemy was also
busy questioning the . . . well . . . questionable practices of
U.S. Intelligence Agencies toward civil rights leaders. After
a long hiatus involving solo projects, multiple breakups and trumped
up indictments by “The Man,” all the original members
are back on tour promoting their latest release, “Revolverlution.” With
classic anthems like “Fight the Power,” “Don’t’
Believe the Hype” and “9-1-1- Is A Joke” to
back up this latest project, fighting for your right to party
at the Fillmore this Thursday may be the most patriotic act you
can do all week. Also performing are Blackalicious and Dialated
Peoples. Date: Thursday, October 10, 2002, Time: Doors open
at 7pm, show starts at 8pm, Place: The Fillmore, Cover: $30, Music:

Synchronous
Dance for Your Planet
The
first annual International Earthdance music festival is inviting
us all to get down and dance for peace. And I do mean all of us.
This will be the world’s largest synchronized music festival,
uniting over a 100 cities. The highlight of the event is a synchronized
link-up at 4pm (SF time), when the “Prayer for Peace” is played
at every event around the entire world! A true moment
of dance Zen in a great SF location, surrounded by the Water Buffalo
(have you seen them?) and other walks of life in Golden Gate
Park. This important global event is organized by a collective
of event promoters around the planet, whose aim is to unite the
positive force of emerging global electronic music movements.
Sounds like a plan to me! On the main stage, there will be a variety
of music including hip-hop, house, and Native American drumming
and dancers. Join some international speakers and an amazing Dj
lineup encluding: Deepsky, Jeno, Gianni, Mick Fleetwood’s Big
Mojo, Narada Michael Walden Band, Tzolkin, Medicine Drum, Eagle
Spirit, Soul Salaam, Zack Darling, Playground,ChiKa, FoxGluv and
more! Event: Earthdance, Date:
Sat, Oct 12, Time: 11am-6pm; Place:

Art Show
Here’s
your chance to get out and see some of the city's up and coming
artists. The Open Studios Art Shows are being
held in different areas of the city every weekend in October.
The shows are a chance for non-established artists who
are just breaking into the scene to get some well deserved exposure.
If you missed his shows at 111 minna and the XYZ bar at theW,
keep an eye out for abstract painter, Jonah Burlingame. Also Christopher
Oatey will be showing his vivid acrylic work; a collection of
figures and color at the Hotel. His work has been showing
recently at the Red Devil Lounge and Cloud 9. If you really want
to go but your friend would rather watch bad sit-coms tell 'em
there's also free wine and hors d'ourves - that should do it.

Liberator, who came together in the UK to squat and
throw illegal parties around Europe - finally uniting their
talents under the Stay Up Forever label. Proper name,

remaining vestiges of the underground techno scene of the early
90s. Currently, they've been playing on BBC Radio One, and surprisingly
enough, you can still catch them at illegal parties all over

It's so funny how they call it the "season finale" like it's the
last episode of "Friends" or something. The difference is no one
is pregnant, getting married or moving down the hall. Instead
everyone will be on a big deck looking over the bay dancing in
the sunshine to ecstacy-loving house jams. Which show would you
rather watch? Superstar Doc martin guest stars blowing the Neilson
Ratings through the roof - as if the huge fireworks display is
not enough. (JP)
Event:
Stompy Dig-in Reunion
Venue:
Cafe Cocomo
DJs:
Jonene, Preston, Tasho, Tim-dawg
Music:
House
Cover:

Stompy is undeniably a San Francisco house music legend.
The production team recently moved to Spain but a few years ago
Stompy was IT as far as the killer party scene was concerned.
Stompy is returning for a few shows coming in October and
this is the first. Jonene, one of my favorite house DJ's,
will be laying down his ultra smooth West Coast funky house tracks
along with founding father Preston, Tasho, and Tim-Dawg. The return
of Stompy is a rare chance to feel that true SF party vibe that
made the scene what it is today. Don't miss it. (JM)

Continuing the hip-hop extravaganza that started last week at
the Fillmore, LA hip-hop crew, Jurassic
5 dish out some Tyrannosaurus-sized beats and lyrics
as heard on their new album, Power in Numbers. The lyrical
and stylish wordplay, featured on their first album Quality
Control , is reminiscent of true park jams and block
parties. This night is laden with promises of great beats and
vibes to ignite that happy hip-hop flame in your heart. (GR)
Event:
Devotion
Venue:
The End-Up
DJs:
Mark Farina, Alan Russell
Music:
deep 'n' funky house
Cover:
$15-$20
House funkstar Farina is back, I guess he couldn't keep away from
his favorite city in the world...and he's brought Alan Russell
along to take the edge off that gettin'-down-to-house-music-till-your-legs-ache
business. Be ready for a packed dance floor and when you are ready
for that much-needed breather, relax on the patio, but keep
listening like the de-vo-tee you are. (GR)
