SF Pride
Perhaps the proudest city in America, San Francisco needs the whole month of June to fit in all the Pride celebrations around the city. As we enter Pride week, LGBT members from around the country flock to the Bay to experience one of the most extravagant and colorful Prides in the world. In addition to Saturday's Dyke March & Castro Pink Party and Sunday's big parade, the official Pride website lists dozens of events with an array of musical tastes and scenes. Notable parties include Mo Butta Soul Funk Thursday at The New Parish in Oakland, A Truly Fabulous Nightlife at the Academy of Science, UNITY at 111 Minna, Ghettodisco and Shangri-la at The Endup, Go Bang! Rights of Massive
Opulent Temple, along with Distrikt, Symbosis, Paradise Motel and more, host a mega-spectacle to co-create an unforgettable night at this concert-level full-on production. Jazz Mafia Symphony
The Bay's own Jazz Mafia is coming at you this afternoon with special guest Chali 2na to present to you the future sounds of jazz. They got there start in SF's Mission District and with hard work and determination have risen to the top of their game. They've collaborated with everyone from Roy Ayers, Q-Bert, and Kid Koala to Zion-I, The Grouch and EPMD. This afternoon's collaboration is with MC Chali 2na who is known for his lyrical contributions to groups Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli. Desert Arts Preview
Ever been wandering through the Playa and been captivated by some amazing art piece and stopped to fathom what the heck the people behind it must have done to create this spectacular thing? Tonight, you can get a sneak preview of some of the many notable art projects in progress right now for Burning Man 2011, and hear directly from the artists about their processes. Speakers include: Kristian Akseth & Stacey Reineccus (Airship Victoria), Jim Bowers (Burning Time), FJ Cava (Right of Pezzage), Douglas Bevins (Trojan Horse), Orion Fredericks (Exsuscitare Traiectus), Peter Hudson (Charon), Jon Sasrriugarte and Krysten Mate (Serpent Twins), and Kiwi Chris and Diarmo Horkan (The Temple of Transition). Compression takes over Thursday night at Mighty with acclaimed drum 'n' bass artist High Contrast aka Lincoln Barrett. A fan of dnb since his early days growing up in Wales, Barrett eventually landed residencies and came out with his debut album True Colors in 2002 on Hospital Records. After his singles "Return of Forever" and "Global Love" made it on to the UK Singles chart, BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix show featured High Contrast and later selected his second album High Society as 'Essential Mix of the Year'. Now a Coachella graduate, Barrett remains in the dnb spotlight and recently released a 'best of' compilation titled Confidential featuring notable remixes and the high points of his decade-long career. He's not just Warp Records' current poster boy, but has worked on collaborations with Thom Yorke and Erykah Badu as well.
