Swedish-born DJ/producer Christian Smith spent his formative years in Germany soaking up the the early house and techno sound of artists like Sven Vath. Now based in Sao Paulo, Smith spreads his funky house and soulful techno with world tours and appearances at major festivals like UK’s Creamfields, Holland’s Dancevalley, Spain’s Monegros and Belgium’s I Love Techno. His music has been releases on major labels like Renaissance, Adam Beyer’s Drumcode, Josh Wink’s Ovum, 100% Pure, John Digweed’s Bedrock, and his very own Tronic, which released his debut solo LP Director's Cut last year. Tonight house legend Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez is gracing the Bay with his presence. This is the real deal! Dope, known as half of the production team Masters at Work (along with Louie Vega), has released countless hits over the last two decades. However it wasn't until Dope released "The Bomb" along with Nuyorican Soul (with a myriad of soul artists) that his career blew up. He is one of the pioneers of the New York house sound and paved the way for everyone from Quentin Harris to The Martinez Brothers. This will be an unforgettable evening. Don't miss out! (WF) |

This star-studded showcase is completely off the chain. There are way too many headliners to showcase now but let me try to give you a quick run down. Kevin Saunderson is one the pioneers of techno and more specifically Detroit techno. Mark Farina is one of few to bring the sounds of house music from the East Coast and Midwest to the West coast, during the pre-internet era and has flourished ever since. Christian Martin is one of the heavy hitters over at Dirtybird Records that frequently plays an uncompromising blend of tech-house. I mean do I really need to keep going here? I think not. Seriously, this show has a little bit for literally everybody. Hold on to your hats ladies and gentleman because this event is going to be one wild ride. (WF) |

Philly-based underground hip-hop super producer/DJ, RJD2 will be camping out in SF tonight! This globe-trotter is known best for his versatile style of weaving folk, blues and jazz into the inner fibers of the underground hip-hop sound and aesthetic. Showcasing one of the West Coast's talented veteran turntablists, Som Bar invites us the witness DJ Rhettmatic's scratching skills on the decks. One of the members of the Beat Junkies, Rhettmatic started his illustrious career in 1983 with the DJ group Double Platinum. His first album with musical partner KeyKool called Kozmonautz is recognized as one of the first ever hip-hop albums released by an Asian-American group. The legendary Pete Rock blew up airwaves back in the 80s on NYC's WBLS show "In Control with Marly Marl." He released some albums with CL Smooth and then went on to gain production fame on albums like Public Enemy's "Shut 'Em Down" and Run DMC's "Down with the King." He also produced records for Naughty By Nature, EPMD and LL Cool J. He was one of the early hip-hop pioneers to merge the sounds of hip-hop and jazz, along side other groups like A Tribe Called Quest and Guru.
