North Beach Festival
A vibrant neighborhood overflowing with history, North Beach remains an icon as San Francisco's Little Italy and the birthplace of the Beat generation. Not to be confused with the North Beach Music Festival, the North Beach Festival celebrates its 57th year with two days featuring arts and crafts, gourmet food, three stages of live entertainment, Italian street painting, pizza tossing competitions, beverage gardens, children's activities and the blessing of the animals. Stern Grove Festival
The annual summer concert series at Stern Grove kicks off this Sunday! Thanks to support of fans and people like you, every event is admission free and welcome to all. For the first concert of the season Ben L'Oncle Soul will open for Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, a Brooklyn-based revivalist funk & soul band aiming to capture the sound of 60s/70s funk music. They use analog recording and only instruments that were available in the 70s to keep their sound in its purest funk form. If you haven't heard of these funk ambassadors before, you may have heard their cover of Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" during the opening credits of the film Up in the Air or their song "How Long Do I Wait for You?" in the first season of Hung. It's going to be a funky, soulful summer day at Stern Grove! This event is popular, so come early to secure a good spot on the lawn. This star-studded showcase is completely off the chain. There are way too many headliners to showcase now but let me try to give you a quick run down. Kevin Saunderson is one the pioneers of techno and more specifically Detroit techno. Mark Farina is one of few to bring the sounds of house music from the East Coast and Midwest to the West coast, during the pre-internet era and has flourished ever since. Christian Martin is one of the heavy hitters over at Dirtybird Records that frequently plays an uncompromising blend of tech-house. I mean do I really need to keep going here? I think not. Seriously, this show has a little bit for literally everybody. Hold on to your hats ladies and gentleman because this event is going to be one wild ride. (WF)

The legendary Pete Rock blew up airwaves back in the 80s on NYC's WBLS show "In Control with Marly Marl." He released some albums with CL Smooth and then went on to gain production fame on albums like Public Enemy's "Shut 'Em Down" and Run DMC's "Down with the King." He also produced records for Naughty By Nature, EPMD and LL Cool J. He was one of the early hip-hop pioneers to merge the sounds of hip-hop and jazz, along side other groups like A Tribe Called Quest and Guru.
