The.ME.Project
Now this is going to be fun! Mark your calendars for Thursday
to celebrate with local art collectives, Altruity
and ME’D1.ATE. They’ll be hosting simultaneous parties
in San Francisco and NYC. The simultaneous events mark the launch
of The.ME.Project, an online art exhibition that examines the
human experience - who we are and how we relate to each other.
BE ME - one's relation to oneself, LOVE ME - one's relation to
one another, FOLLOW ME - one's relation to the world around us.
The.ME.Project brings together artists, designers and writers
from all different disciplines and places to examine the human
condition. The event will feature a special screening of “The
Distance After” by David Crompton & Stereo 8. They’ll
also feature a special DJ performance by Mingle Mangle, and appearances
by Eug, Neiman Marcos, Freddy Anzures, Milo, Rocket Morton, Ammon,
Zangs, and Plyometrics. The main lounge will be jazzy grooves,
deep house, with a little east coast hip-hop for good measure.
Get your groove on down in the basement for some tribal, breaks
and prog. And we almost forgot…FREE culinary delights by
Chefs Martin Wilda of Farallon and Mike Barbera of Bizou. Date:
Thursday, October 3, Time: 5-10p.m. Place:
Cloud 9, Admission: $5, More

Woop
Woop That’s the sound of the beat...
Re-educate yourself about hip-hop through a night of conscious
mc’ing, slamming percussion, and mind-bending graffiti work.
The legendary Bronx b-boy KRS-One is back (simply because he never
left) to headline this night designed to give your harried urban
existence some relief. Aside from a
lesson from the great TEACHER himself, other acts like MC Micah
9, and Gina Rene from Soulstice, help keep the verbal flow steady.
The graffiti art show provides an eyeful, showcasing Zoe One art,
Trust, Peace One and more, and connecting you to the other true
part of hip-hop’s soul. Oh, and even though its not really
pushed, there’s some really bomb house from Laron, and others
DJs to round out the flavor. Date: 10/4 Time:
9pm-5am Place: Big Heart City, Admission: $18,

Proposition
F: VOTE YES!
With the Lingba Lounge almost closed down, along with Cell Space
in danger and precarious futures for other venues - pay attention.
The ballot measure, Proposition F, which goes up for vote in November,
should be another hot item at the polling booths. If it passes,
appointments to the Entertainment Commission, which grants the
permits, would be split between the Mayor (with 4 seats) and the
Board of Supervisors (with 3). It would also make sure that the
appointments would represent neighbors, businesses, police, planning
and health interests. This proposition would establish a more
balanced way of promoting nightlife here in San Francisco. It
would go into effect in July 2003. Moral support isn’t going
to be enough; your VOTES are needed to help keep our cities nightlife
open to democratic processes. Vote yes for better nightlife. (CW)

Artsy Movies: Recipe for First Date
OK so maybe it worked in High School during the Nightmare on Elm
Street part 6, but we're older now and you can bet your decreasing
algebra know-how that your date will see right through your pathetic
little plan to jump in his lap during the suspenseful moments
in "Swimfan." (...ahem....I know because I tried this
last week.) So forget the teen thriller horror flick thing (it's
so 1998.) If you really want to keep him guessing, suggest a night
out at the Microcinema/Independent Exposure showcase! The October
edition starts tonight at El Rio and you can feel sophisticated,
artsy and cultural as you take a compelling look into the creative
energies of short film, video and digital media directors from
around the world...or that's what you tell your date at least.
When you get there remember to feign surprise and slight disappointment
as you learn that this is the "Halloweird" scare-the-fuck-out-of-you
edition! Guess you'll be jumping in his lap after all! Event:

Who
Killed Biggie and Tupac? The untimely death of two of the most
talented names in hip-hop over six years ago still perplexes
many, and has even piqued the interest of a Englishman, Nick
Broomfield, the director of Biggie and Tupac,
a documentary dealing with the mysterious deaths of the Notorious
B.I.G and Tupac Shakur. The film ultimately confronts the notion
that Biggie and Tupac were just two talented individuals caught
in something much larger than the East coast vs. West coast
hip-hop war. The director visits each of the respective artists
homes, and where they were murdered. He also attempts to investigate
other sources of potential leads into their deaths, interviewing
the ex-LAPD officers involved, as well as the notorious Suge
Knight, ex-Death Row label president. By picking up the pieces
of this mystery, Broomfield helps shed some light on the hip-hop
tragedies of September 7, 1996 and March 7, 1997. Place:

Spirited
Away So I have a feeling the phrase “Spirited
away” makes more sense in Japanese, but regardless anime
is going mainstream! Disney has just picked up this Alice-in
Wonderland inspired anime film for distribution by the Japanese
director Hayao Miyaki, who brought us Princess Mononoke. The
film is about a girl trapped in a magical world of changing
beings, attempting to find her way back to reality. It was also
a MONSTER hit in Japan, and is now dubbed in English for your
viewing enjoyment. It contains all of the same strangeness you
may encounter after a long night of being out, then having one
of those cool lucid dreams afterwards. Date:

Giant
Octopi! A free outdoor movie & music event: So you want
to do something different this weekend…like really different?
Well, there’s this giant octopus attacking the city...in
this 50's sci-fi thriller being shown at the Presidio Main Post.
It Came from Beneath the Sea stars
Keith Tobey and Faith Demergue - oh and a giant octopus that
crawls out of the sea and ravages the city. This is the first
time that Film in the Fog has been put together and it sounds
pretty cool to me. There is a tour of the Presidio Main Post
at 5 pm with a recital from the Air Guard Saxophone Quartet
(cause I know you've been craving some sax), the film starts
at 7pm. The golf course cafe and the Presidio Bowling ally will
be serving food or you can bring your own picnic. One thing
I know I'm going to bring is a sweater and a blanket cause its
gonna be chilly. Event: Film in the Fog Date:

Thursday N:code presents the Capacitors
a group of interdisciplinary movement artists who use their bodies

Gettin’

Venue: Delirium Bar (formerly Albion)
DJ's: Travis, guests
Music: house, electro, 2-step
Cover: Free
I saw Travis on the bus yesterday and even he is surprised at
how well his new party at the Delirium Bar is going. Different
shite name same shite place but the beats are good and that’s
the most important thing next to cheap drinks. People chill, play
pool and some hardcore Tuesday fans even shake that ass. It’s
a family affair and this is your house or shall we say your “underground
dance music.”
Event:
Chillin’
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Taj, Russel Vargas, Dave Madix,
PAZ38
Music: progressive house, deep house,
broken beat
Cover: Free
Happy hour parties are great even if you don’t have a job.
Chillin’ features new artists showing paintings, jewelry,
illustration and more each week as DJs craft away at the turntables.
The music can be thumping here, but if you’re too tired
to move your feet, there’s always some interesting object
of art that will inspire an intellectual conversation…like
say the current exhibit featuring a statue that looks like a giant
orange penis hanging from the wall. Go pontificate on whether
this was the artist’s intention, or this writer’s
own perverted perception and listen to a wide array of beats from
deep house to breaks.

IK Night
Venue: Oxygen Bar
DJ's: Oleg, IKarus
Music: downtempo, chill breakbeats

The Infinite Kaos crew has taken over Tuesdays at the Oxygen Bar!
DJs Oleg and IKarus will give you a wide array of downtempo and
chill breakbeat vibes so you can leave your living room but still
keep it mellow. I mean really, it’s only Tuesday and Tuesday
they say is a great day for extra O2! (I made that up) The Cosmic
Cafe also offers raw cuisine, so go down for some good food, herbal
tea aromatized oxygen, and freakin’ relax.

If this party was a relative of yours, it would be your cool,

Why stop after all these years when your party (I mean Uncle)
plays dope upbeat danceable house music on a Wednesday night in
lower Haight? Everyone love’s this reliable night of house

Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Ben Doren, Chad Clubb, DJ Solomon,
Ean Golden
Music: funky house, club classics
Cover: $10
I went to a show at Ruby Skye last night and I was blown away
by the sound system there which was rattling my eyeballs, it felt
kinda good. Ruby Skye may be a larger club, but it maintains a
warm inviting atmosphere and the 2nd Suday team are no rookies
on the promotion scene. This weekly Wednesday event still draws
a crowd. DJ Solomon is gonna be opening up with an edgy set of
house classics before Chad Clubb get busy with some funky house
music around midnight. This is a great venue for a clubbing date
cause its comfortable with places to sit and talk, and if you
don't have anything to talk about there's always the eyeball rattling.

Hi. In case you have been living on a very obscure continent on
Mars I thought I would introduce you to the Qool Happy Hour. Ok
well I have talked about this highly populated hardcore party
event innumerable times and I’m quite bored of describing
the banging progressive house social mecca that it is. Let me
just say this, if Qool was a piece of fruit it would definitely
be one of those new peach-plum combination fruits. You ge the
best of both worlds. Party like a rock star to thumping progressive
late-night beats yet you’re in bed by 10pm (yes the same

that the Men of Exotica Male Review actually will. Don’t
forget those $1 bills, ladies and if you think the bodies look
tight you should hear the music. DJs include Melyss (of the sister

artist Sharyn Maceren, singing her 94.9 hit song "Hard to

Music: hip-hop, funk

I love politically infused events because they re-assure me that
this is a progressive city, that occasionally likes to educate
while doing what it does best- partying. This night hopes to get
the word out about two propositions on the November ballot: R
and N, respectively, which deal with rent control, and the homeless
problem here in SF. Come find out what its all about in between
live sets of funk and hip and hop. This pick was brought to you

I plan on having this night)

DJ's: Greg Eversoul, DJ Seven, Ivy
Music: House

Lo-rise Records has been throwing this party for a while and it's
one of the most consistently rockin' events in the city. This
weeks DJ's are solid house Purveyors Ivy and Greg Eversoul. Ivy
has been killing it in Denver with the Mile High House crew that
pretty much runs the scene out there and Greg Eversoul has been
doing his funky thing all over SF including this party with DJ
Seven. Backflip may boast the only outdoor pool in the Tenderloin

by an indie house label. So there.

uniting artists with events and joining art with technology. Last

POW, ARROW and SIX all stopping in for a cocktail before "work"

The Kinkyfunk residents strolls/staggers in with that funky DJ

been playing this monthly a few times recently and it has always
been successful. Do I sense a residency coming on? This party

Guess what? There is even MORE DJs than what is mentioned above.
You got Moonshine, Paradox, Release, Bling Bling all the major
SF party DJs will be representing at Unity and I suppose that's
the point. Expect some deep house, breaks, hip-hop, tribal house
and expect it for like...days.This weekend party does not end
until Sunday night. Usually I think these big blow-out events
are too much but the theme is to "Unite all nations under
one roof and party for freedom." I can't find any problems
with that statement. Why can't the U.S, and Iraq solve their problems
with a dance-off? It worked for Justin Timberlake and Britney
Spears!

key" attire are starting to fill this intimate back room
dancefloor at Delirium up. Its not the exotic décor that

house territory, but a little electro, broken beat, and breaks
make their way on to the decks as well.

Sno-Drift hosts some different flavor this Sunday with the thirteenth
floor featuring reggae, hip hop and dub. Highlighting the event
is a live performance by the Last Trumpet- what a dope name that
is. This event looks like a tight night of reggae sounds so maybe
take a break from those weekly reggae nights and check out this
fresh affair.
