The.ME.Project
Now this is going to be fun! Mark your calendars for Thursday to celebrate with local art collectives, Altruity and ME’D1.ATE. They’ll be hosting simultaneous parties in San Francisco and NYC. The simultaneous events mark the launch of The.ME.Project, an online art exhibition that examines the human experience - who we are and how we relate to each other. BE ME - one's relation to oneself, LOVE ME - one's relation to one another, FOLLOW ME - one's relation to the world around us. The.ME.Project brings together artists, designers and writers from all different disciplines and places to examine the human condition. The event will feature a special screening of “The Distance After” by David Crompton & Stereo 8. They’ll also feature a special DJ performance by Mingle Mangle, and appearances by Eug, Neiman Marcos, Freddy Anzures, Milo, Rocket Morton, Ammon, Zangs, and Plyometrics. The main lounge will be jazzy grooves, deep house, with a little east coast hip-hop for good measure. Get your groove on down in the basement for some tribal, breaks and prog. And we almost forgot…FREE culinary delights by Chefs Martin Wilda of Farallon and Mike Barbera of Bizou. Date: Thursday, October 3, Time: 5-10p.m. Place: Cloud 9, Admission: $5, More Info (JP)

Woop Woop That’s the sound of the beat...
Re-educate yourself about hip-hop through a night of conscious mc’ing, slamming percussion, and mind-bending graffiti work. The legendary Bronx b-boy KRS-One is back (simply because he never left) to headline this night designed to give your harried urban existence some relief. Aside from a
lesson from the great TEACHER himself, other acts like MC Micah 9, and Gina Rene from Soulstice, help keep the verbal flow steady. The graffiti art show provides an eyeful, showcasing Zoe One art, Trust, Peace One and more, and connecting you to the other true part of hip-hop’s soul. Oh, and even though its not really pushed, there’s some really bomb house from Laron, and others DJs to round out the flavor. Date: 10/4 Time: 9pm-5am Place: Big Heart City, Admission: $18, for more info call: 415.777.0666 (CW)

Proposition F: VOTE YES!
With the Lingba Lounge almost closed down, along with Cell Space in danger and precarious futures for other venues - pay attention. The ballot measure, Proposition F, which goes up for vote in November, should be another hot item at the polling booths. If it passes, appointments to the Entertainment Commission, which grants the permits, would be split between the Mayor (with 4 seats) and the Board of Supervisors (with 3). It would also make sure that the appointments would represent neighbors, businesses, police, planning and health interests. This proposition would establish a more balanced way of promoting nightlife here in San Francisco. It would go into effect in July 2003. Moral support isn’t going to be enough; your VOTES are needed to help keep our cities nightlife open to democratic processes. Vote yes for better nightlife. (CW)

Scary Artsy Movies: Recipe for First Date
OK so maybe it worked in High School during the Nightmare on Elm Street part 6, but we're older now and you can bet your decreasing algebra know-how that your date will see right through your pathetic little plan to jump in his lap during the suspenseful moments in "Swimfan." (...ahem....I know because I tried this last week.) So forget the teen thriller horror flick thing (it's so 1998.) If you really want to keep him guessing, suggest a night out at the Microcinema/Independent Exposure showcase! The October edition starts tonight at El Rio and you can feel sophisticated, artsy and cultural as you take a compelling look into the creative energies of short film, video and digital media directors from around the world...or that's what you tell your date at least. When you get there remember to feign surprise and slight disappointment as you learn that this is the "Halloweird" scare-the-fuck-out-of-you edition! Guess you'll be jumping in his lap after all! Event: Microcinema/Independent Exposure Screening, Date: Tuesday, October 1 2002, Place: El Rio bar 3158 Mission Street San Francisco @ Precita, Time: 8pm Cover: $5, More info or call 415 282 3325 (JP)

So you saw Swimfan, Barbershop, Austin Powers now what? Try these flicks.

Who Killed Biggie and Tupac? The untimely death of two of the most talented names in hip-hop over six years ago still perplexes many, and has even piqued the interest of a Englishman, Nick Broomfield, the director of Biggie and Tupac, a documentary dealing with the mysterious deaths of the Notorious B.I.G and Tupac Shakur. The film ultimately confronts the notion that Biggie and Tupac were just two talented individuals caught in something much larger than the East coast vs. West coast hip-hop war. The director visits each of the respective artists homes, and where they were murdered. He also attempts to investigate other sources of potential leads into their deaths, interviewing the ex-LAPD officers involved, as well as the notorious Suge Knight, ex-Death Row label president. By picking up the pieces of this mystery, Broomfield helps shed some light on the hip-hop tragedies of September 7, 1996 and March 7, 1997. Place: Roxie Cinema, 3117 16th St., SF, Time: Sept 18-Oct 8, 7, 9:30 (also Wed, Sat-Sun, 2, 4:30) More info (GR)

Spirited Away So I have a feeling the phrase “Spirited away” makes more sense in Japanese, but regardless anime is going mainstream! Disney has just picked up this Alice-in Wonderland inspired anime film for distribution by the Japanese director Hayao Miyaki, who brought us Princess Mononoke. The film is about a girl trapped in a magical world of changing beings, attempting to find her way back to reality. It was also a MONSTER hit in Japan, and is now dubbed in English for your viewing enjoyment. It contains all of the same strangeness you may encounter after a long night of being out, then having one of those cool lucid dreams afterwards. Date: All
this month, Place: AMC Kabuki, Metreon, Piedmont, Shattuck, Time: Call local theatres for times. View Trailer , More Info (GR)

Giant Octopi! A free outdoor movie & music event: So you want to do something different this weekend…like really different? Well, there’s this giant octopus attacking the city...in this 50's sci-fi thriller being shown at the Presidio Main Post. It Came from Beneath the Sea stars Keith Tobey and Faith Demergue - oh and a giant octopus that crawls out of the sea and ravages the city. This is the first time that Film in the Fog has been put together and it sounds pretty cool to me. There is a tour of the Presidio Main Post at 5 pm with a recital from the Air Guard Saxophone Quartet (cause I know you've been craving some sax), the film starts at 7pm. The golf course cafe and the Presidio Bowling ally will be serving food or you can bring your own picnic. One thing I know I'm going to bring is a sweater and a blanket cause its gonna be chilly. Event: Film in the Fog Date: 10/5, Time: 5pm tour, 7pm film, Place: Presidio Main Post, Admission: Free, More Info (JM)

Tuesday's Pix
[ Tue | Wed | Thur | Fri | Sat | Sun ] [ View All ]

Event: Gettin’ It
Venue: Delirium Bar (formerly Albion)
DJ's: Travis, guests
Music: house, electro, 2-step
Cover: Free
I saw Travis on the bus yesterday and even he is surprised at how well his new party at the Delirium Bar is going. Different shite name same shite place but the beats are good and that’s the most important thing next to cheap drinks. People chill, play pool and some hardcore Tuesday fans even shake that ass. It’s a family affair and this is your house or shall we say your “underground dance music.”

Event: Chillin’
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Taj, Russel Vargas, Dave Madix, PAZ38
Music: progressive house, deep house, broken beat
Cover: Free
Happy hour parties are great even if you don’t have a job. Chillin’ features new artists showing paintings, jewelry, illustration and more each week as DJs craft away at the turntables. The music can be thumping here, but if you’re too tired to move your feet, there’s always some interesting object of art that will inspire an intellectual conversation…like say the current exhibit featuring a statue that looks like a giant orange penis hanging from the wall. Go pontificate on whether this was the artist’s intention, or this writer’s own perverted perception and listen to a wide array of beats from deep house to breaks.

Event: Tuesday IK Night
Venue: Oxygen Bar
DJ's: Oleg, IKarus
Music: downtempo, chill breakbeats
Cover: $5
The Infinite Kaos crew has taken over Tuesdays at the Oxygen Bar! DJs Oleg and IKarus will give you a wide array of downtempo and chill breakbeat vibes so you can leave your living room but still keep it mellow. I mean really, it’s only Tuesday and Tuesday they say is a great day for extra O2! (I made that up) The Cosmic Cafe also offers raw cuisine, so go down for some good food, herbal tea aromatized oxygen, and freakin’ relax.

Wednesday's Pix
[ Tue | Wed | Thur | Fri | Sat | Sun ] [ View All ]

Event: Audible Colors
Venue: The Top
DJ's: Tasho, guests
Music: uptempo house
Cover: $5
If this party was a relative of yours, it would be your cool, fun Uncle Fred who can tell you stories about back in the day if he wanted too but won’t. He prefers to just keep it goin’. Why stop after all these years when your party (I mean Uncle) plays dope upbeat danceable house music on a Wednesday night in lower Haight? Everyone love’s this reliable night of house music and he’s cheap. I mean it’s cheap. Oh fuck the analogy. I was never good at those.

Event: Discover
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Ben Doren, Chad Clubb, DJ Solomon, Ean Golden
Music: funky house, club classics
Cover: $10
I went to a show at Ruby Skye last night and I was blown away by the sound system there which was rattling my eyeballs, it felt kinda good. Ruby Skye may be a larger club, but it maintains a warm inviting atmosphere and the 2nd Suday team are no rookies on the promotion scene. This weekly Wednesday event still draws a crowd. DJ Solomon is gonna be opening up with an edgy set of house classics before Chad Clubb get busy with some funky house music around midnight. This is a great venue for a clubbing date cause its comfortable with places to sit and talk, and if you don't have anything to talk about there's always the eyeball rattling.

Event: Qool Happy Hour
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Deckard, Hyper D, Lick the DJ, Michael Anthony, Gil, Spesh, Gene Carbonell
Music: progressive house, trance, techno, breakbeats
Cover: $5
Hi. In case you have been living on a very obscure continent on Mars I thought I would introduce you to the Qool Happy Hour. Ok well I have talked about this highly populated hardcore party event innumerable times and I’m quite bored of describing the banging progressive house social mecca that it is. Let me just say this, if Qool was a piece of fruit it would definitely be one of those new peach-plum combination fruits. You ge the best of both worlds. Party like a rock star to thumping progressive late-night beats yet you’re in bed by 10pm (yes the same night).

Thursday's Pix

Event: Girls Night Out
Venue: Velvet Lounge
DJ's: Muse, Kimmy, Muse, Kleckern
Music: house, hip-hop, R&B
Cover: $10
This time the girls are singing, “It’s getting hot in here/So take off all your clothes”. The difference is that the Men of Exotica Male Review actually will. Don’t forget those $1 bills, ladies and if you think the bodies look tight you should hear the music. DJs include Melyss (of the sister Mayonaise crew) along with Kimmy, Muse and Kleckern. Recording artist Sharyn Maceren, singing her 94.9 hit song "Hard to Get", "One and One" and her latest release "Always Dreamin."

Event: Benefit Jam for Housing Justice/ “No on propositions R and N”
Venue: Justice League
DJ's: Ross Hog, Sake 1 live music from Red Guard Cash, Deuce Eclipse
Music: hip-hop, funk
Cover: $5
I love politically infused events because they re-assure me that this is a progressive city, that occasionally likes to educate while doing what it does best- partying. This night hopes to get the word out about two propositions on the November ballot: R and N, respectively, which deal with rent control, and the homeless problem here in SF. Come find out what its all about in between live sets of funk and hip and hop. This pick was brought to you by letters R, N and the number 7 (that’s the number of beers I plan on having this night)

Event: Lo-rise Motel
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: Greg Eversoul, DJ Seven, Ivy
Music: House
Cover: $5
Lo-rise Records has been throwing this party for a while and it's one of the most consistently rockin' events in the city. This weeks DJ's are solid house Purveyors Ivy and Greg Eversoul. Ivy has been killing it in Denver with the Mile High House crew that pretty much runs the scene out there and Greg Eversoul has been doing his funky thing all over SF including this party with DJ Seven. Backflip may boast the only outdoor pool in the Tenderloin (big deal) but Lo-rise boasts the best party in the TL thrown by an indie house label. So there.

Event: Oxygen
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Frank Boissy, Julius Papp
Music: deep house
Cover: $3 b4 10pm; $5
You know how the Oxygen Bar has flavored aromatherapy sessions using the healing compound O2 and natural raw foods? …Well this has nothing to do with that crap. Oxygen at Cloud 9 pulls a crowd of seriously sexy party people who like their house music hip and to the point-- just that straight smooth sound with some vocals mixed in for flavor. It’s Friday, let’s not get too complex.

Event: FLUX
Venue: Il Pirate
DJ's: Felix the Dog (Groundscore, Engine), Cubby (SDR, Flux, Breaking 130), Checkoway (Fogdin, Flux, Gaarden),ASG (SDR, Your Blue Room Radio)
Music: progressive, tribal, breakbeats
Cover: $3 b4 10pm; $5
Is it that time of the month again? The guys from FLUX once again bring you sick beats, in all shapes and sizes, of progressive, tribal, and breakbeat madness. Can't hang with some serious stomping? No problem! There’s that chill patio where you can still hear the action and rest your sorry ass down. This month is guest DJ Felix the Dog. He’ll scratch that itch you’ve had for dancing.

Event: Blasthaus 7th Anniversary Party
Venue: Club Six
DJ's: Kyoto Massive [ Site ], Travis, Mike Bee, Monty Luke
Music: house, progressive house
Cover: $20.00 presale
Tonight, the mysterious guest is revealed at the very special 7th anniversary party for visual and promotion wizards, Blasthaus. This crew has been installing memorable artworks in clubs such as DNA Lounge and Ruby Skye. They’ve also been hard at work uniting artists with events and joining art with technology. Last week they brought the amazing Jazzanova to SF and that is just one example of the fantastic talent they bring to our city. Expect to sweat profusely upstairs and (especially) downstairs with Japan’s Kyoto Massive, along with a sweet line-up of Future Shock DJs.

Event: Ahimsa presents Indian Summer Sessions
Venue: The Ramp. 855 China Basin Way @ Illinois
DJ's: Cheb I Sabbah [ Site ] , Nihal Mehta, Consuelo, Ferhan, Vijay Chattha, The Feenam Circle, Gagan Palrecha
Music: Asian inspired electronica, Brazilian house, Afro-Asian beats, Hip-hop
Cover: $15 presale, $20 at the door
Tonight an outdoor celebration of the Ahimsa Tour’s one year anniversary and the National Gandhi Day of Service will make you feel holy and at peace with the varying ranges of international music from India to Brazil, and back here to the Bay. Ahimsa’s purpose is to showcase South Asian influenced artists, such as our local Nicki’s fave Dj Cheb Sabbah, in order to raise consciousness and funding for community events and initiatives. So come out with that sari and show your support!

Event: BIG

Mixed Elements and Farhad present some of SFs best deep house and hip-hop DJds into the afterhours. This BIG night of BIG beats should be just your size so don’t be intimidated by how good the music is, just relax, you can handle the whole thing. This is our Flyer Of The Week!

Event: Deep House Project
Venue: Wish
DJ's: Chris Orr, Carlos, Jackson, Ron Kurti, Pepe "Marty" Music:Deep House
Music: deep house
Cover: Free
Chris Orr may be the vinyl whore but I'm gonna be the one pimpin' and perpatratin' at the Wish Bar. This night is dedicated to the deepest groove that House music has to offer. Guest Chris Orr along with residents Carlos, Jackson, Ron Kurti and Marty will demonstrate the sound that goes perfect with candlelight, dancefloors, dirty Martinis and writers.

Event: Explode La Mode Fasion Show
Venue: Red Devil Lounge
DJ's: Kaskade, Jolen Essex, Melvin J, Bec
Music: house
Cover: $10
I wish this fashion show were a regular thing for my unemployed ass because
it offers everything I need right now for free: haircuts, food, and
massages. And if I look sharp enough in my new dew, then maybe I can get
someone to buy my drinks for me all night too. The DJ’s, especially OM’s
Kaskade are pumping house beats for the runway divas, and dancefloor daddys
till 2am.

Event: REMEDY
Venue: DNA Lounge
DJ's: Jeno, Matt Valenz, Paul Medina
Music: house
Cover: $15
Ahhhh......REMEDY! I need one, but instead of the illegal prescription drugs I usually take I think I’ll try some deep and soulful house instead. This new night at DNA is taking off and it’s not just because of the Go-Go dancers, it’s plain old quality house from Jeno, Matt Valenz and Paul Medina. Sounds for the healing. So all your senses are satisfied, visuals are provided by LUX. Thanks to the local pharmacists from Remedy!

Event: Nextune presents Donald Glaude
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Donald Glaude, me +, and Anita Lofton
Music: funky house, hip-hop, downtempo grooves, liquid grooves
Cover: $20
The third appearance of Donald Glaude at this trendy hotspot is going to explode like a bomb. You know Donald likes to jump into the crowd and shake his ass yelling back at the audience, skipping his own needle. So don’t be surprised if end up next to this Seattle born DJ shaking it. Visual content will be brought to you by Blasthaus and Go-go, making the evening a truly enthralling visit to the land of funky tracks and beat huggers.

Event: The Boombox Project
Venue: Xenodrome
DJ's: Laird, Felix the Dog, Laron, Archana, Fred Funk, Tung, Loosebeats, Ernie
Music: house, breaks, tribal
Cover: $15 presale
PSYCHOFUNKODISCODELIC and BRASS TAX lugged this gigantic boombox to Burningman and then lugged it home just so all you guys get to see it. I experienced this 8th wonder of the world on the playa while I was high off my ass hoola hooping to the beat. This fully functional boombox is big enough to have the DJ booth inside the tape deck if you can imagine that. The lights blink red, gold, green to the beat just like the ones in 1984. Expect funky breakbeats screaming out the speakers and be prepared to get down!

Event: Gloss
Venue: Sno-Drift
DJ's: Reda, Harry Who, OM Lounge includes SOS and King Kooba
Music: house, jazzy house,
Cover: $5
Gloss at Sno-Drift may be out in the cuts of SF, but once you are out there, you got everything you need. This week Reda makes an appearance from NYC along with SF’s Harry Who. The om Lounge portion of Gloss will also be going off with OM recording artists SOS and new on the scene, King Kooba. I heard King Kooba’s new CD (not yet released) this boy serves up delicious funky jazzy sounds…not to be missed. And that’s an order troops!

Event: Looq Hard
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Ms. E, Spesh, many more
Music: progressive house, nu-skool breaks
Cover: $10
You know Nitevibe likes to give props for promoters throwing benefits. Did you know that the Looq Hard party donates half of their profits to a charity every month? I'm talking about the SPCA, Red Cross, Surfrider Foundation. - these cats definitely get the angel promoter award. I feel like I'm gaining good karma points just talking about it. This month proceeds go to the Bucklew Project Ms. E of Futurebreaks FM will rock a 4-hour set specializing in those breaks that crossover into progressive territory. Locally, she is known for her residency at the legendary Eklektic as well as her involvement with Future Breaks FM, True Intent Recordings, and Bottom Heavy. Worldwide she has rocked clubs nationally.

Event: Melon
Venue: DNA Lounge
DJ's: FC Kahuna, Cuffy and Leon D, Dano, JZ, N8 Castro
Music: tech and funky House
Cover: $15, 2 for 1 B4 11pm
This is a night of the music from the guys behind the guys. FC Kahuna have been in the game for years producing hit tracks like "Machine Says Yes" in the UK. Cuffy and Leon D are New Zealands premier house production team. Besides it's Nates Birthday and he and JZ are gonna be rockin the upstairs lounge. Both floors at the DNA are sure to be bumpin and I bet I lose five pounds running up and down those stairs so I don't miss anything.

Event: Kinkyfunk
Venue: Club Six
DJ's: David Coleman & Sen Sei, Seamie, Paul Guido
Music: deep house,progressive house
Cover: $10
Watch out for 6th Street this Saturday night. The pre-party starts out at the bar across the street called Anu. Here you will find assorted party people, promoters, DJs and the lovely doormen from POW, ARROW and SIX all stopping in for a cocktail before "work" begins. Around 10pm is where the real shit goes down at Club Six. The Kinkyfunk residents strolls/staggers in with that funky DJ & keyboard duo, David Coleman and Sen Sei. These two have been playing this monthly a few times recently and it has always been successful. Do I sense a residency coming on? This party goes until 4am and oh how it will...

Event: Unity
Venue: Hotel Ibiza
DJ's: Inner Space, Dimitris Mykonos, Frenchy Lefreak Michael Anthony Teddy RockSpin,The Perpetual 1 Ed Sanares, Rick Lee, Sphinx , Eladio Serna, Norman Stradley, David Garcia, Grisha, Jr. Lopez, Demilo
Music: house, breaks
Cover: $10
Guess what? There is even MORE DJs than what is mentioned above. You got Moonshine, Paradox, Release, Bling Bling all the major SF party DJs will be representing at Unity and I suppose that's the point. Expect some deep house, breaks, hip-hop, tribal house and expect it for like...days.This weekend party does not end until Sunday night. Usually I think these big blow-out events are too much but the theme is to "Unite all nations under one roof and party for freedom." I can't find any problems with that statement. Why can't the U.S, and Iraq solve their problems with a dance-off? It worked for Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears!

Event: Synapse
Venue: Delirium
DJ's: Joshua (Iz), Niall Augustine
Music: House, breaks
Cover: $5
If anyone knows how to move a crowd packed into tiny spaces, its IZ. He rocks Bionic every week, has his hands on the latest vinyl at Tweekin’, so you know his foundation is strong. Mission regulars, and other Valencia corridor bar hoppers in "low key" attire are starting to fill this intimate back room dancefloor at Delirium up. Its not the exotic décor that brings em in…it’s the damn fine music. This is mostly house territory, but a little electro, broken beat, and breaks make their way on to the decks as well.

OK. I said this once before and everyone had a hard attack. I believe that this REALLY is the final WET party so don’t miss it! I was in LA for the last one. Gabe Rene completely rocked the house when he played that 80’s hit “Glamorous Life” and Julius Papp and Boissy tag teamed deep house style. Up here in SF we have the complete lineup of superstars including David Harness, Miguel Migs, Mauricio Avilles, and Consuelo. Sorry LA, SF is where this party was born.

Event: 13th floor
Venue: Sno-Drift

Sno-Drift hosts some different flavor this Sunday with the thirteenth floor featuring reggae, hip hop and dub. This event looks like a tight night of reggae sounds so maybe take a break from those weekly reggae nights and check out this fresh affair.
