2011 Mardis Gras Ball
If traveling to the French Quarter to trudge through packed streets full of drunken frat boys and their shirt-lifting counterparts has lost a bit of its luster since your college days, this Fat Tuesday, join the Sunset crew to make sure that you are given the proper dosage of "Good Time Music," right here in your own backyard, at their 15th Mardi Gras Ball. Classic carnival music from New Orleans and Brazil and colored throwbeads will fly through the rafters of Mezzanine as Extra Action Marching Band, the Brass Mafia and Boca do Rio hit the stage. Extra Action Marching Band is a local institution that couples massive streetband intensity with an outrageous and often raunchy stage show that could only come from San Francisco, while The Brass Mafia-- the "New Orleans wing" of the Jazz Mafia collective, takes New Orleans traditionals to new levels of musicianship with medleys that redefine the genre. Boca do Rio is San Francisco's leading purveyor of soulful samba, driving audiences into dancing fits for almost a decade and has played the SF Mardi Gras Ball many of those years. Come out and celebrate--with this lineup it will be impossible NOT to have a good time! Date: Tue 3/8, Time: 9pm-late, Place: Mezzanine, Cover: $15, link More Info (JE)

Activate your senses with the many sights, sounds, textures, tastes and smells with a collective of artists, musicians, educators, spiritualists, and visionaries dedicated to the idea that conscious art and music can foster change in the world. Date: Fri 3/11, Time: 9pm-5am, Place: Public Works, Cover: $10-15, link More Info (JE)
