Noise Pop
The 19th year of Noise Pop kicks off this week with dozens of events and shows celebrating indie music and culture while giving exposure to up-and-coming artists and musicians. Every day this week from Tuesday to Sunday features an all day schedule of presentations, happy hours, independent films, craft shopping, live shows and parties. While most of the music in Noise Pop is indie rock oriented, electronic music and DJ fans will find plenty to satiate their musical tastes: Dan Deacon plays solo shows on Tuesday & Wednesday, hip-hop legend Aesop Rock performs at the Great American while Kid Koala headlines Mighty on Friday, and VJ hip-hop master Peanut Butter Wolf takes over Public Works on Saturday. The ultimate dance music event of the year is just around the corner, have you bought your ticket yet? As the pinnacle event of the year, the WMC continues to be THE destination in the US for all DJs, industry players, and dedicated dance music fans. The international DJ battling event, Thre3style comes to the States this year with 21 qualifying competitions to find the best DJs in America. The top DJs of San Francisco will battle it out this Thursday to perform, gain notoriety, and express themselves in a party atmosphere. Rather than focusing on technical prowess, this competition rates how well each DJs pumps up the crowd and rocks the party. Show the judges which DJ you like best by going wild on the dancefloor. Eddie Richards, dance music's quintessential pioneer and "Britain's godfather of house and techno" (Mixmag), is one of the first DJs to champion house back in the mid 80s and one of the UK's original mix DJs residing at London's Camden Palace, voted 'best club in the world'. Since the mid-80s he has been included in virtually every book, documentary and film on the dance culture. Eddie is the pioneer of what is now known as 'tech-house' which is Phonic's signature sound. From the distant shores of Tel Aviv comes Sabbo and his crew as Soulico tearing it up at Public Works in their first US tour in over a year! The Israeli beat marauders have been playing together since the year 2000, playing beats that fuse hip-hop, reggae and dancehall to Israeli folk and disco from the 1970s. They have won Israel's top DJ award, and after being signed to the US JDub label they're bringing their wild parties state-side. Support from local misfits Slayers Club. (JE)

The hip-hop community is banding together to present Spread Love 2, a benefit for Noah Stout, a 4 year old diagnosed with a rare and fatal brain cancer. DJs, rappers and MCs such as Equipto, Boac, DJ Houseshoes, Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist and their friends, are dropping the bass, keeping the dancefloor jumping for this important fundraiser. (CQ)

Montreal, Quebec-based DJ and turntablist Kid Koala is cutting up Mighty tonight. He is signed to the British Ninja Tune record label and is a member of alternative hip-hop super group Deltron 3030. In addition he has made contributions to Lovage and Gorillaz and has opened for juggernauts like Radiohead and Bjork. This guy is freakin' incredible! Parisian producer/DJ and house music sensation Martin Solveig is bringing his own brand of glossy, crunchy grooves to Ruby Skye tonight! He's just now starting to become more prominent in the US, but he's been around since the mid 90s. He has been privileged enough to work with DJ legends like Bob Sinclair and be remixed by the likes of Felix Da Housecat and Laidback Luke. Whether it's his funk flooded mix tapes or more pop-sentric tracks, he has a complex ear that is diverse enough to do mainstream sounds as well as underground classics. His fusion of Parisian house and electro-pop is just what the doctor ordered, so get ready to tear up the dance floor this evening. (WF)
