Underground Resistance
Blasthaus needs your help as they go before a committee Thursday to obtain a beer/wine license to support a new unique social art space. Blasthaus is the underground art, film, music and technology collective that has brought you parties like Joypad as well as cutting edge mega acts like yesterdays’s Jazzanova show at Ruby Skye. Did you go to Groova Armada, Thievery Corporation, Blue States, Vikter Duplaix? You can thank Blasthaus for all of that. Their latest venture is a chill-out gallery, screening room, lecture space and music center opening in the Tenderloin. The “Realspace” project has been jumping hurdles since day one from lack of funds to leaky pipe and retrofitting issues. After overcoming all this, yet another smackdown from police and SF politicians are preventing “Realspace” from becoming a real space. The crew needs to obtain a beer/wine license for revenue in order to keep their independent art-loving asses in gear. Though The TNDC (Tenderloin Community Group) supports the space which will bring new life and culture to the TL, another permit for alcohol in this area is going to be a difficult fight as Blasthaus attempts to convey the message that this is NOT another club or rowdy party space, it is a cultural center intent on uplifting the neighborhood. What you can do to help: By this Thursday, 1) Sign the petition, 2) write a letter of recommendation for Blasthaus to give to local politicians. Fax 415 567 3722 or e-mail letters to Will of Blasthaus us, Gavin Newsome, Mark Leno, Jake McGoldrick, and CC all letters to Monica Fish (JP)

SF Raves: The Evolution of the Glow stick
Celebrate a decade of music, dance, and friendship with SFRaves and a free outdoor party in the park. These guys have been dedicated to the rave/clubbing community since the early years, helping you find that rat-infested warehouse, with the crazy underground party, or acting as resource for .B-side dancing. They will be playing a variety of anthems from the years 1992-2002 so you can share stories of glory days blowing whistles, in unison with other candy ravers in day-glo visors. Remember when you were up on all the latest advancements in pharmaceutical psychedelics? Pictures will be on hand, but bring your own as well, so everyone can work together to trace the evolution of the glow stick. This event is all ages, and fresh fruit and water will be given out for free. Awww, love. Date: Sunday, September 29 Time: Noon- 5p.m. Place: McClaren Park, Admission: Free More Info (CW)

Romance is Back
Romantic Scintillation is back for two days of flesh-flanked fun. The most talented toe-licking funfest to come to the city. Last years Tease-O-Rama hosted in New Orleans was a complete success with rave revues. This year San Francisco will be host to this scantily clad diamond studded event. You will be able to witness these heavenly bodies on stage at Bimbo’s 365 club. Sexy performers have been gathered from all corners of the world to thrill and excite. During the day there are classes available from everything from dance workshops with Hot Pink Feathers to burlesque comedy. Classes will be held at Broadway studios. Expect to be educated on the ways of tease, which is surely aimed to please. See Saturday pix for show details. More Info (VW)

Sound Sculpture
Every Friday and Saturday at the Audium, a sound sculpture is being created. The Audium is a non-profit sound gallery that is funded mostly by the National Endowment for the Arts. The theatre has only 49 seats placed in concentric circles. The speakers are placed under, on top, in front and in back of the seats so you get a 360 degree 3D sound experience rumbling above and below your seat. There's no four by four beats but if you're interested in where sound technology is going - this is a very cool show. Event: Sound Sculpture, Date: Every Friday and Saturday, Place: The Audium, Time: 8:30 pm, Admission: $12, More Info (JM)

The DJ Project for Youth
There's more to the DJ scene then killer parties. A few DJ's are giving back to the community through the DJ project. Started in 2001, the DJ project helps "at-risk" teens handle tough situations through music. The groups second CD was finished early this summer and the kids are currently working on getting the CD into stores. The artists who helped out were Azeem (Spearhead, VU) and DJ Zeph (WideHive, VU), right now the group is looking for artists to help with their new crew of kids, one group of girls and one group of boys. Let’s do it! More Info (JM)

[ Tue | Wed | Thur | Fri | Sat | Sun ] [ View All ]

Event: Slims Presents Atmosphere [ Site ]
Venue: Slim’s
DJ's: Slug, Mr. Dibbs, Blueprint (MC), BK One Deejay Bird
Music: hip hop underground
Cover: $16
Grunge god Slug brings us meditative emo suburban rap that rocks. So he goes on too long about his X-girlfriend so what? You can relate. An underground sound worth checking which some have been so brave as to call their “crossover album.” Beats are bump’in with originality come early. Despite what you think, you are not the first on your block to hear about this.

Event: Sex Noise
Venue: Arrow Bar
DJ's: Nightclub Dwight, Eyepatch guy
Music: electro, punk, new wave, lounge
Cover: Free
Sex Noise. Personally I don’t make noises like this when I have sex. It’s more like a mix between punk rock and diva house, but that’s just me. Perhaps you chirp and rumble like electro or lull about synth-like for your sex noises. Either way, come on down and enjoy the dirty sounds at Arrow. Did you see the film Hysterical Blindness with Uma Thurman and Juliet Lewis? It’s about these girls from North Jersey hanging around bars in 1984. Rent it.

Event: Sin (Service Industry Night)
Venue: The Cellar
DJ's: Featuring Heather Lauren & Band
Music: live jazz funk, R&B
Cover: Free
It’s all good in the hood in this dungeon like atmosphere. This place is fairly quite on a Tuesday. But, you never know who might appear. I met a multi million-dollar tourist one night. Then kicked it with some pretty chill neighborhood crew another. I suggest this spot for beginning your week, and especially if you really fuckin’ cheap. $1 shots. And $3 drinks & wells. Bring your homies just to chill and get ripped. You can almost always get on the pool table too. Well maybe, this party is only for the serious alcoholics. Did she say, “$1 SHOTS?”

Wednesday's Pix

Event: Slow Burning
Venue: Arrow Bar
DJ's: Star Eyes & super surprise guests
Music: breaks, Miami Bass, electro, 2-step
Cover: $3
It’s like a freakin’ raffle in here or a potluck or showcase #2 on the Price is Right. You never know what you’re gonna get. Every genre is represented from dub to electro. They purposely schedule DJs that make no sense together to confuse you, piss you off and make you come out and represent YOUR style. Death ambient mentalist OST has played here with house happy Ben Doren. Come feel the anarchy, where it like a new trendy handbag and then when you think you’ve figured it out BAM!, CRASH!, POW!, they play Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam.. Oooh baby I think I love ya from head to toe.

Event: Dream
Venue: Cloud 9
DJ's: Paul Hemming, Linden-C, Quazy
Music: deep, soulful house
Cover: $5
If your at Cloud Nine and the room starts spinning, don't worry its not the drinks. You're just on the rotating bed. I like it when they put the tables right in front of the club so you you jazzed up to check out the other two floors they have in this club; the very "south Beach" and so is the crowd. The music however is dubby, loungy, exotic house. Those Zen City kids are always keeping people moving towards the dance floor.

Event: Engine
Venue: Club Six
DJ's: Solar, J-Rock, Felix the Dog
Music: Nu-skool breaks, acid house
Cover: $TBA
"The engine to my comprehension is just too complex." This new weekly acid house/breaks night launched last week in the basement of Club Six. Felix the Dog resides along with impressive weekly guests. This week is Solar and J-Rock. Upcoming guests include Rasoul, Markie and Iz. Adam Freeland stopped by just for fun last week so if that's any indication of the kind of playas that represent at Engine, this night is sure to be a success.

Event: The Finger
Venue: Arrow Bar
DJ's: Omar and Jenny
Music: Synthpop, No Wave, Electropunk, Disco Nouveou
Cover: $3
Perpetual moping and posing has still got the dance floor in some places. (I mean that in the nicest, coolest way --I swear). Every Thursday at the Arrow Bar, in the heart of underground traffic Omar and Jenny, of Omar and Jenny fame, host the night where you, the clubber, get to imitate Patick Nagel prints while getting your groove on. Step to songs by groups like Yaz, Front 242, S.PO.C.K., and The Faint.

Event: Kit Kat
Venue: End-Up
DJ's: Rotating Residents: Jellybear, Garth, Simon, John Howard, Jonene, guests
Music: deep house
Cover: $10-15
It looks like September is a very special month where nobody in particular is spinning- ha ha. Well, that’s what I thought last week. Let’s just say they’re not advertising who is spinning. Just recently, I danced, actually jumped, around the dance floor (please make space ladies), to a DJ I never heard of before -- Chris Lum. The house music was thumping. I mean, it caused me to relive crazy thoughts like…”Jeez, we should just start taking acid again like how we went dancing years ago…” To me, that’s good music. Whoever the international talent is, the crowd is always full of experienced clubbers and the dance floor always too crowded for me to show you my REAL signature moves.

Event: Ko Pha Ngan Happy Hour [ Site ]
Venue: Border Cantina
DJ's: Jonathan, Quasar, Dylalien, and Dr. Spook
Music: deep house
Cover: Free b4 6pm; $5
This party definitely packs a punch! If your looking for mellow moods and slow grooves, turn around and head the other way because the Ko Pha Ngan happy hour is psy-trance, Baby, of the fastest and most delicious kind. Resident DJ Pulsar takes no prisoners on the dance floor and the guest DJs that surround her at this weekly are equally relentless. Happy hour prices til 7pm, then $3 Coronas and $4.50 Margaritas all night. Good, cheap Mexican food til 8. It’s a happy hour—get in, dance your ass off, and snuggle up under your covers at a reasonable hour.

Event: Collective
Venue: The Cellar
DJ's: Ross, Daymeetrius, Daniela
Music: Nu-soul, hip-hop, R&B
Cover: $10 after 10
Sorry - you're gonna have to choke down some culture before you get to the straight debauchery at this party. The Collective brings together several elements of the artistic community to give you a more diverse menu for your clubbing experience. Spoken word and indie films add to the energy. The Cellar provides the perfect vibe for a party like this one. The space is loungy and candle lit. Plenty of room to dance to the soul and hip-hop this party serves and places to hide out and chill, if that's what you're lookin’ for.

The killer jump-up jungle and hip-hop mix that is Aphrodite’s trademark is enjoyed by all and everywhere else the man appears throughout his US tour. Sure, he passes through SF fairly often, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dance your ass off to the bubbling baseline rhythms of the King o’ funky beats. Remind yourself to pick up his latest album, Aftershock, a raging mix of drum n bass, hip-hop, and rap that will be sure to get your blood pumping and make you remember what it was like in the beginning.

Event: Money Mark

Cover: $10 presale/12 at door
Money Mark, the keyboard genius and producer that helped evolve the Beasties Boys acid b-boy sound on Check Your Head, as well as others, is playing at gig to preview tunes from his upcoming album. It’s a cheap show, so just stop by and see what new funky grooves lurk in the brain of this eclectic jammer. You will not be disappointed. I saw him play the trumpet at a show once too—always surprising.

During 1987-88, Oakenfold hosted a series of crucial club-nights which introduced thousands of Brits to house music. Not to mention forming one of the most successful dance labels of the 1990s, Perfecto Records. Even well over a decade after his emergence, Oakenfold may be the world’s most popular DJ.

Event: OM
Venue: DNA Lounge
DJ's: Hipp-E, Halo, John Howard, Fluid, Star Eyes, Siren
Music: deep house, funky house
Cover: $15 b4 11/ 20 after
Well the flyer from DNA says something about West Coast innovators. Did they move to the West Coast? I had no idea. These guys popped in my hometown of Baltimore along time ago, and I knew Hipp-E was from Denver, and Halo from Chicago. Whatever the point is they represent the West Coast sound, play big parties and festivals, and will surely put a club like the DNA on its ass…or feet. The downstairs will definitely be out of hand with crazy breaks jumping from speaker to speaker. Grab the person closest too you and hold to them when you’re legs start to feel weak-or just head upstairs where the music will still be deadly, but a little more sublime, and chilled out. The Om party is always essential.

Event: Borracha
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Lovesky, The Baroness, Jaeson Lee, Gavin Hardkiss
Music: house, breaks, disco, techno, funky schtuff
Cover: $10
The DJs, this party’s name and even the flyer…I can’t a give high enough recommendation for this party. The gang from Sunburn/ Hardkiss records is brutally imposing some delicious tribal house and breaks on the crowd at 111. In a way, I hope no one reads this and just goes to the foam party instead. My editor thinks I really got it on for thongs (I do) but I swear, drunk Latina sluts are an even more appealing thing to me. That girl on the flyer…she’s just waiting for something hot, macho o feminita to whisper those two scared words to, “aye papi”. Getting away from my own fantasies for a moment, I’ve got to mention that the music is going to fucking rock ( in an ecstatic soaked house sense of course) so come in comfortable shoes, or just kick them off when you get here.

Event: Funktion 1 year anniversary [ Site ]
Venue: End-Up
DJ's: Kenny Hawkes, Michael Anthony, DJ Samo, N8 Castro, Craig Kuna, Robbie Gaggaz
Music: house
Cover: $5 b4 11, $15

Kenny Hawkes got his big break in London on the radio with a show called "Girls fm". The London dance station that blew up in the nineties. Since then he has been doing his deep house thing for Paper recordings and more recently with “Music for Freaks”. San Francisco is one of Kenny's favorite places to play so be ready for a killer set. This party marks a year that Funktion has been making Saturday nights turn into Sunday mornings so if anyone needs me I'll be dancing by the waterfall.

Event: Delicious Karma [ Site ]

Delicious Karma bring you a new supper club at the Foreign Cinema, that cool fuckin’ place in the Mission that sports great old flicks. For the early bird DK takes over the 9pm dinner hour as DJ Daymeetrius lays down some tasty French hip-hop. At 10:30pm the restaurant goes lounge and DJ Donovan lays down the Latin grooves while you sip your Mojito with visuals from amazing films like “Run Lola Run”. Or you could just go to any old dive bar. Hmm…tough choice.

World class DJ’s, Bands, vaudevillians and other oddly entertaining acts will also be there to help bring the house down. Really … it’s all about the Martini, the quiet whispered innuendo, and the soft pouty look given over a naked shoulder. COME…

Event: Kinkyfunk Boat Party [ Site ]
Venue: the boat
DJ's: Jerry Bonham, Seamie
Music: Progressive house, breaks, tech-house

A boat party with Sasha is a tough act to follow, but these guys are confident that the waves rocking the boat won’t be the only reason you’re moving around. Kinkyfunk resident DJ Seamie creeps out of that dark Club 6 basement to get the party started with some sexy breaks, and up-tempo house. Jerry Bonham pumps the energy up with his well-known blend of progressive house to make sure you’re completely amped for the after party at Anu. The boat leaves from the docks behind Pac-Bell Park at 7:30 and returns at 11:30. A full bar will be available, of course.

Music: house, progressive house, techno
Cover: $10 Presale
On tour with the Perfecto crew to support his new album, Horizons, Seb Fontaine hits Sno-Drift with a unique blend of progressive, tribal, and techno house. He has a style all his own, which has definitely changed over the last few as heard in the succession of Prototype CDs. This DJ, with his own weekly slot on the popular UK Radio One, is on tour pretty much non-stop this year in the US, as well spinning in top clubs worldwide. The local DJs, as well as your own bad self, can show this UK DJ a good time SF-style.

Event: Hot Rats
Venue: Julip
DJ's: Toph One, B-cause
Music: hip-hop, breaks, soul, jazz
Cover: Free
My man has lost some serious marbles up in here. First “Nude Ants” and now “ Hot Rats”. Toph One in the post apocalyptic era of his former “Juke Joint”, brings you the latest in his family affairs. The legendary SF DJ B-Cause joins him for “Hot Rats’ and this time it’s specific. No hillbilly funk opr art-fuck flavored jams. It’s Hip-hop, soul and breaks, and they don’t take requests.

Event: Dub Mission
Venue: The Elbo Room
DJ's: Tomas, Shockman
Music: hip-hop, breaks, soul, jazz
Cover: $5
SF's longest running reggae night just celebrated 6 years. This party is nowhere near over. The dub and reggae tracks live on with the same positive vibration they have had for decades slowly evolving into the future like a reverberating dub affect. DJ Tomas (Umoja Sounsystem, XLR8R) headlines the evening which i personally guarantee will provide some of the best and diverse reggae music possible.
