Resfest
2002 Worldwide!
The Res Crew was down with digital back before you had a cell
phone! An underground movement to create and showcase films using
modern technology and a low budget was the goal. They come off
very polished now as the “Res Media Group” with little
history on their website of how it all began. But I remember when
it started back in 1996 as the “Lowresfest” run out
of an SF loft by co-founders Jonathan Wells and Bart Cheever.
The original festival has split into two separate companies one
being DF1LM
and the other - Resfest.
The latter kicks off it’s world tour at the Palace of Fine
Arts this week featuring shorts, documentaries, animation, music
videos, panel discussions and technology demos. Be sure to check
out “Breath Control” (a beat box documentary) and
“Cinema Electronica” a (compilation of electronic
music videos) before your buddies in London, Seoul, Bristol, Cape
Town, Sao Paulo and Osaka get to see it! Event:
Resfest, Date: 9/18-9/22, Place:
Palace of Fine Arts 3301 Lyon, Admission: $10

Fashion
Parade Benefit
I
said this once, I’ll say it again: if you’re going
to go out and spend your money at club, give it to the benefits
first and pick up some karma points. The term ‘fashion show’
is an overused expression for this particular event which features
new developments in the neo- “rocker” look as seen
in Murio’s and Zeitgeist bars. So try something called the
Fashion Parade instead - a fundraiser for the San Francisco Aids
Foundation sponsored by Mega Saint. It highlights San Francisco
designers, so you can check out the next big thing in the city
before it gets to those cheese heads in your office’s sales
department. And its not all just clothes - local DJ’s will
be spinning, the Fabulous Ukelele Queens will be playing, and
live performance art in the form of burlesque dancing and Brazilian
martial arts. Date: Wed. 9/18, Time:
8pm, Place: The Cellar 685 Sutter St., Admission:

Breakdancing/Capoeira
Separated at Birth?
Brazilian fever has swept SF, and it’s high time to swing
those hips to some South American beats while viewing Capoeria
dancing by Master Urburu Malandro and his students. A highlight
of the night includes a battle between two handpicked teams of
the “All Star Capoeristas” versus the “All Star
B-Boys and B-Girls.” The winners will receive a prize of
$225, so check out the teams on www.momodance.com
and choose your team! To punctuate the festivities, DJ
Adnan will bring his formidable tech house presence
to the turntables, marking his return from a South American tour,
and showing us some of that Brazilian infused house he picked
up while he was away. The delicious altars created by Sherry,
and visuals by Ramdogus will take you on quest through the hot
jungle rhythms of Brazil and back. Entertainment includes: DJ
Adnan, Batucada Drummers, DJ Ivan-I, DJ Moses, DJ Riddler?, DJ
Nomadeeq. Expect tribal house to dancehall. Date:

Aussie
Sound Experiments
This one takes a little patience so if you're hoping to pop in
for a quick listen before you go out in SOMA you might miss the
experience. "Ten Hours of Sound" is a compilation of
sound experimenters from Australia who are pushing the limits
of how electronic sound is created. The results can be beautiful
and serene or really jarring. The sounds affect your mood and
after a while your thought patterns begin to flow with the music.
The exhibit is just a stage with two speakers on it, no visual
stimulation at all, you just have to listen. If you take the time
though, it's a worthwhile lesson is synthestisia. Event:

Consisting of digital projections and sound, some show highlights
feature a synchronous art and music performance by DJ Spooky,
a new media film collaboration by 47 artists Phenom and Shepard

Jazzanova
from Berlin!
If
you are still rockin' that disco mixtape at 7am Sunday morning,
it's time to understand the Jazzanova sound and vastly improve
your come-down-chill-out experience. Jazzanova emerged in the
90's as a coalition of 3 DJ teams infusing drum n' bass, trip
hop and house, all inspired by the improvisational flow of jazz.
After a series of experimental sessions and collective projects,
these 6 Scientists of sound mathematically put it down with the
release of their debut EP, Carvelle in 1998. It rapidly rocked
charts and sold out across Germany. It was only in late 2000 that
the Jazzanova ensemble decided to issue their first full-length
record. Remixes 1997-2000, again conquering dance charts
and clubs all over Europe with their au natural beat treatment.
Now with the 2002 release of In between Jazzanova is showing the
world what the definition of "nu-jazz" is. Real instruments
or programmed sounds? Who cares as long as we hear those warm
emotive grooves. Event: Blasthaus Presents Jazzanova,

Check out the “saccharin type slang” and the true
underground funk beats thrown out by Detroit Hip-hop group Slum

DJ's: Ju Ju, 4Real, Rando, Presha
Music: drum n’ bass

After the constant pounding 4/4 rhythms at the WET party, I’m
ready for the complex drum patterns and rumbling bass that make
up the jungle sound. It’s funny that no one calls it jungle
anymore. That name is dope. Now a days it’s drum n’
bass, new school breaks, progressive breaks etc. So damn technical.
It’s all breakbeats. The difference is how much room the
producer leaves between the beats. I’m going to keep calling
it jungle and I really don’t care what you Phuturo scenesters
have to say about it

Venue: Delirium Bar (formerly Albion)
DJ's: Travis & special guests
Music: house, 2-step, R&B

Its one of the toughest nights of the week to make it out. I mean,
who has the strength to go 6 nights a week, every week? But if
you’re starting your weekend EARLY, or just still ridin’
high from the last one, perhaps this one’s for you. What
I like about this party’s style is that Travis, and his
friends play “underground dance music”- genre-unspecific,
and open-armed- everybody’s welcome. This means house, 2-step,
hip-hop, breaks, and even some freaky R&B you’ve never
heard before can find its way to the decks. For those of you who
miss the Albion, don’t worry, its still the same booze pit
you knew and loved.

I said it months ago and I believe more than ever that, San Francisco
is taking it's relationship with the fashion world to another
level. New designers, fashion shows and benefits are popping up
at all the clubs and this week is no different. Sebastien and
Fashion Television (FTV) invite you
to an afterparty for the Macy's Passport show. Proceeds from the
annual celebrity spotting event go to fight the war on AIDS. The
afterparty at Spa helps you fight the war on boredom. Johnny Dangers
AKA John Stuart that super NYC house DJ of Club Sugar, will be

Music: future jazz, brokenbeat, techno
Cover: $5 b4 11pm, 10 after
Detroit’s Recloose (AKA Matthew Chicoine) is the next big
thing off of Carl Craig’s Planet
E label. His latest release “Cardiology”
is not easily identified as one certain style and he likes it
that way “music from the heart” is what Recloose is
talking about and he “Ain’t Changing.” This
former radio DJ with roots in hip-hop, funk and jazz also played
saxaphone for 8 years which he attributes to his tight ear. Word
on the street is that he was discovered while working at a lunch
counter. He slipped one of his mix tapes between two slices of
bread in Carl Craig’s to-go order, Carl loved his style
and a new underground star was born. This album has been written
up so many times but I liked what the Wire had to say, "Not
just future jazz, this album offers and entirely new spin on soul
music. Period." Local support from hosts of the KUSF Friday
Night Session DJs Tomas and Andrew Jervis. Trust me on this one;
you can go to Ruby Skye anytime.

Jazz electronic fusion or brokenbeat is the word coming out of

DJ's: (Hosted by Fillmore Slim),
Echo, Jason Mouse, Ultraviolet, Femmes Fatales, Havoc, Ms. Audio
Angel (mic), DJ Push, Anon
Music: drum n’ bass,

This will certainly be a night to remember. The sleeveless ho-down
is hosted by an actual San Francisco pimp, Fillmore Slim as seen
in the documentary “American Pimp.” He is considered
one of the most historical figures in pimpology which is why he
is asked to judge the costume contest at midnight. The winner
receives a gold tooth from Dr. Bling Bling's and everyone gets
free condoms. After seeing the film, American Pimp I truthfully
do not know if I am down. Call me a playa hater or whatever but
the women in this film are pathetic. Ladies, if you do want to
get out and pimp yo’ shit go ahead but don’t be turning
over the cash to anyone else but yourself. Damn. Get your head
together, form a labor union or something.
Event:
Devotion
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Julius Papp, Franky Boissy
Music: house
Cover: $10
Are you devoted to house music? Every Sunday house music mania
sets in on the Endup. It starts at 6am with T-dance and then heads
into Devotion at 8pm. This week’s local superstar house
devotees are the very popular Julius Papp and Franky Boissy. You
know them from a variety of large-scale events where boas abound
and glittery tank tops sparkle into the early morning. The dance
floor will be well rocked into the early morning (or late night
whatever makes you feel better about staying up all night and
day)
