Qool-Hugs
on 9/11
Feel the need to be with people during this difficult time? Me
too. Hear beats to remember and to forget Wednesday at Minna.
In their newsletter, Qool had this to say, “We realize that
many event organizers have taken the appropriate step of canceling
their events in light of the massive tragedy surrounding all of
us. Indeed we all must find a way to personally reckon with the
travesty that has occurred, or at least find the time to step
back and reflect… Over the years, hundreds of emails have
been sent to us explaining, in various ways, "qoöl lifted
me from the dark for a few short hours." it is in this spirit
that we remain open tonight. The warmth of qoöl will be there
for you should you need it." See Wednesday’s pix for
details. More

Supervisor
Mark Leno Cares About Our Ears
One of our beloved city supervisors, Mark Leno, has introduced
legislation to the city that amends parts of the current police
code dealing with our late night groove. The first is an ordinance
allowing those nubile party people under 18 to dance (in places
that allow them there) after two a.m. The second replaces the
ambiguous (and unconstitutional) wording of “moral character”
in the club’s permit application, with “criminal and
permit history”, in regard to determining approval. The
third proposed amendment serves to foster a more collaborative
relationship between the approval committee and the neighborhoods
of San Francisco by requiring the time needed to apply for an
event permit to be changed to 30 days, (instead of the current
10.) This protects the neighborhoods from having events they don’t
support. The fourth ordinance is just a little bit of love from
Mark - getting clubs to provide inexpensive earplugs to its patrons-now
you’ll be protected when you stick your head in that stack’s
bass cone. Under the city hall legislative process, the ordinances
are assigned to the 30 day rule to the public works and public
protection committee, which will review their proposed impact.
Read the official ordinances here.

Cosmic
Nuclear Reality Check
This
weekend is a benefit to raise money for the upcoming “Unchained
Reaction” event taking place October 13th. The anti-nuclear
resistance dance party at the Nevada site of Yucca Mountain protests
the testing and dumping of waste on native lands. Corbin Harney,
founder of the Shundahai network (a peaceful non-profit anti-nuclear
organization) and an elder of the Newe Sogobia tribe will be speaking
about the dangers of lifting the ten year moratorium on testing,
and the proposed depository of 77,000 tons of high-level radioactive
waste. Mr. Harney speaks at 7pm, with live performances, and DJs
to follow. Expect to see some of the city’s best abstract
musical talent, as well as a fire performance by the Pyro Banshees.
Artists include Niteshade, and Gawker, Sakana, and Brain Damage
from the S.P.A.Z. Collective; Slo-Mo from Entartete Kunst Recordings,
and Andres Octavio from the Stress Collective Date:

Name: DJ Hyper
Listen & Learn: [ Site
]
AKA: Guy Hatfield
Origin: Lincoln, England
Style: new school breaks
Started: 1992 DJing free house music parties.
Being disenchanted with the commercialism of house music, Hyper
turned to hip-hop and breaks. After a move to London and job with
Sony’s international European division 'Sine', Hyper formed
his own promotion company, Waxworks with the mission of spreading
progressive breakbeats to the masses.
Influences: Groups like Hybrid and labels like
Push, TCR were finally providing the missing sound Hyper was looking
for to combine his interest in breakbeats, hip-hop, house and
electro.
DJing: Hyper started DJing regularly again after
DJ Lee Buridge asked him to play at Sunday Sessions at club, Atlantis
co hosted by Tyrant.
Gigs: Tyrant nights at The Bomb in Nottingham,
bi-monthly resident in the PuSH room at John Digweed’s infamous
Bedrock night at Heaven and Bedrock’s new club night in
Bristol.
Debut: Hyper mixed and compiled “Bedrock
Breaks”. This marks the first ever breaks set release on
John Digweed’s progressive label, Bedrock.
Digweed on Hyper:"I'm really into the crossover
between house and breaks and feel Hyper has captured its Incredible
energy with his mix": --John Digweed
Important albums: Hyper compiled and mixed the
Y3K compilation on Distinctive Breaks, hailed as the most important
Breaks album to date, making album of the month in DJ, Muzik,
Mixmag, Wax and Ministry. The second installment of Y3K has also
recently dropped.
Random Fact: Before he was in the scene, Hyper
was an outdoor shed manufacturer.
DJ Hyper plays The Summit at Club Six this Friday 9/13.

Last Note
There
has been a ton of anniversaries this month-- Mixed
Elements, Strawberry, Loveworks, Twice as Nice, Hai
Jinx, Urban Groove, Bionic. Whew! I guess summertime
is when parties are born. Unfortunately this month
also marks another anniversary –that of the
tragic 9/11 terrorist attacks. Just want to remind
everyone to take a moment to remember what it was
like for the dance music community during that solemn
time last year. It seemed chaotic at first as we all
absorbed the magnitude of the situation. How does
a party scene react? Then suddenly Red Cross benefits
started popping up everywhere at clubs. Instead of
being home alone people came out and showed love and
support for each other the only way we know how--
through music and dancing. Our spirit doesn't’t
break around here in SF. Let’s recognize our
own strength. (JP) |

A drum n’ bass night at an Irish bar in the Tenderloin does
not sound like something that would still be going after a year.
But alas! Feck you - say these drum n’ bass dedicated freaks.
Let there be strong pours of Guinness and break dancing to jungle
on a Monday night rain or shine, it’s delivered.

Naughty

Venue: Beauty Bar
DJ's: Seamie, Brine
Music: house, techno
Cover: $4
This DJ night at the Beauty Bar was originally started by my old
roommate, David “Sky” Walker a few years back. He
would bring in guest DJs and when he moved back to Ireland his
party “Beauty and the Beat” morphed into “Naughty
but Nice with resident Seamie. So now I still get to hear great
house and techno flavor with a fun dancing crowd of hedonists,
the only difference is I don’t have to leave at 3am carrying
a mixer, headphones and needles.
Event:
Addicted
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: Jah Wyzer, Aye-n
Music: hip hop, electro
Cover: $5
Tuesday nights at Backflip have come and gone but Addicted seems
to have everyone hooked. This weeks guests are Jah Wyzer who you
have no doubt heard at True Skool spinning dancehall. Aye-n, from
Compound Records also takes to the decks with some junglist appeal.
Sounds like we’re mixing it up a bit for this weeks edition.
Come be beautiful at Backflip and celebrate the inner-funk that
makes up the hip-hop, dancehall and breakbeat sounds you crave.

after it. Assorted sister selectahs play house and breaks for
a Tuesday night crowd that does not give a fuck about work tomorrow.

DJ's: Q, Ail, Cubby, Jondi, Hyper
D, Spesh
Music: progressive house, techno
Cover: $5
I have many different groups of friends all with varying taste.
They all seem to converge at this insane happy hour featuring
house, techno and progressive starting at 6pm! Is that a normal
hour to hear such beats? Of course. The crowd of enthusiastic
party people ranging from ad execs, music industry people and
raver types all seem to have one thing in common- a need to celebrate
hump day. We’re that much closer to the weekend people have
a drink or 9. Then you can head over to Kate o Brien’s for
the officially sanctioned “after Qool happy hour”
Happy Hour.

Venue: Sacrifice
DJ's: Vinnie Esparza, Asti Spumanti
Music: hip hop, funk, Latin

I ain’t seein’ nothing wrong with a little bit of
bump and hustle. Vinnie Esparza has a party every night. Frankly
I’m sick of seeing’ the guy’s name but they
don’t keep giving nights to fools, so you know he’s
good. This Professor of Funk plays supreme beats you can dance,
drink, play pool by. Just don’t ask him for any jiggy Nelly
shit, or you might get smacked on the ass with a James Brown track
that will knock your socks off.
Event:

the celebration on. Kelly and Naka will be painting live for your
visual pleasure. There will also be a fashion show by R2 (Rachel

to come in then, while there is no cover. Drink someTequila and
then dance all night long to deep sexy house by Naked Music's
Miguel Migs. You have to be careful to walk that fine line between
happy partier and total drunk lush. You want to fall asleep at
6am in your bed with the beautiful melodies in your head and a
vision of Miguel's peaceful face. You do not want to wake up under
a table at Sno-Drift at 6am with the harsh sound of security yelling
and a vision of Jose Quervo laughing at you from the empty bottle!

Armin is one of those 25-year-old child prodigy types considered
