Peace

What would happen if we all believed in peace? John Lennon wanted
to know but musician’s like Michael Franti of Spearhead
and local DJs like Tent, Garth, Ms. E, Garth and Jah Yzer keep
the possibility alive by playing this free festival in Goldengate
Park. Unifying the Peace Community is the mission of the 4th Annual
911 Festival. It started out as an international day of art and
culture in support of political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal. In 2001
the day of September 11th took on a wider significance as a result
of the tragedy and loss of like from the 911 attacks. Show support
for the 4th annual Peace Festival which works to create a compassionate
space of healing for ALL people killed or displaced by terrorism

The
Product - Dance Tech Conference
If you’ve been slamming your own beats, designing your own
melodies, layering percussion, and looking for ideas on how to
get yo shit out to the masses, you might want to check out the
Dance Tech Conference, held at the Rio in Las Vegas on October
8, 9, and 10th. It gathers professionals from several aspects
of the business side of the music industry- folks from publishing
and record companies, as well as entertainment lawyers and established
artists themselves. Dance Tech states that’s its goal is
to broaden the business scope of electronic music and “promote
the independence of” electronic music artists. Even if you
fear the capitalist machine, it may help lend credibility to this
event that the keynote speaker is techno legend Juan Atkins. And
don’t miss the panel, “Where do we go from here?”
featuring the aforementioned impresario as well as Gene Farris,
Mark Lewis, and booty bass spinner, DJ Godfather. I can only hope
the answer to that question is “back underground”.
Check out the links site on their webpage…it has just about
every independent dance label you could think of. Event:

Cocktails
and Paintings
The W Cafe and XYZ Bar transform into an even sexier and more
stylish euro lounge complete with provocative visuals, sultry
grooves and sensuous candlelight. This week’s featured artist
is abstract painter, Jonah Burlingame. Jonah’s technique
involves a process of using a squeegee to add or remove paint
from wood veneer doors. Over each layer of paint is applied a
layer of varnish, thus creating a suspension of color to allow
light and the viewer's movement to interact with the piece. Grooves

Sugarboat
According to gayglobal.com: (Sugar) is what a dance club (boat
party) is all about. Come here for the candy. Stay here for the
music. When you add some bay views and a few cocktails on top
of that recommendation it sounds pretty damn good to me. The best
part of this party is gonna be Ellen Ferrato. Ellen’s sets
are intoxicating [ Audio Mix
] . She puts out so much energy that I’ve even seen her
come out and dance. Ellen is jetting off to Hawaii next week so
this may be your last chance to catch her for a while. Pre-sales

Chance to check out 24hr Party People
British director Michael Winterbottom digs up the dirt on the
80’s “Madchester” party scene in Manchester,
UK, the birthplace of (gasp, dare I say?) rave culture. The days
of Factory Records and the birth of Manchester punk are retold
in this little biopic under the influence of super 8-druggy vision.
Remember The Happy Mondays and Joy Division? This is where it
all began, and the flick also mentions the first crazy days of
a little party drug called ecstasy. Have you heard of it? Expect
the movie to be a whirlwind blur, caught up in its own hopeless
debauchery, but also reveling in the fact that no matter how dreary
it was in Manchester, people still got up and danced! Event:

Not
Forgotten
Techno music has lost one of its lesser-known but highly influential
artists, James Stinson of Drexciya.
Stinson died Wednesday from heart complications. Although low-profile
(they never show their true identity) Detroit group, Drexciya
only released five EPs in ten years recording together, they became
one of the most celebrated and influential names in American experimental
techno. Drex is frequently associated with another group of secret
Detroit musicians, Underground
Resistance. Drexciya used music as a political tool
to discuss issues like racial inequity and inner-city recovery
and have released records on International labels such as WARP
and REPHLEX. We mourn the loss of Stinson. (Tim Pratt)

Kwesi Johnson [ Site
]
Venue: Slims
DJ's: Linton Kwesi Johnson
Music: reggae, dub, spoken word
Cover: $25-$28
LKJ as fans know him, is a wordsmith backed by a heavy dub bass
line - a thoughtful radical, and poet. Raised in Kingston until
he was brought to Brixton (London) at age11, his lyrics speak
to poor and working class Afro-Brits on issues of racism and politics.
Before performing with a band, LKJ was a published poet and journalist.
His organizing activities included the setting up the First International
Book Fair of Radical Black and Third World Books, and involvement
with the political organizations such as the Race Today Collective
and the Alliance of the Black Parents Movement. In 1982, the BBC
commissioned Johnson to create a series of radio programs on Jamaican
popular music. He is a star in the eyes of both musicians and
intellectuals, and a crucial part of reggae history. This is not
to be missed.

the mid-week stresses behind. Then again, true junglists will
tell you to work it out in proper- rinse-out style on the dance
floor. Labor day is over but your vacation is just beginning.

help local artists showcase their work by providing a venue where
people can get together and talk about their work in a super friendly,
laid back environment. Altruity’s got music, visual work
and food from some of the city’s best chefs. Which is good
cause itself. I usually feel more altruistic with a full stomach

Dave Paul
Music: hip hop, breaks, funk
Cover: $15
WAY More than “Parents Just Don’t Understand”
and his career with Wil Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff has always been more
than a pop star. In addition to inventing the Transform Scratch,
one of the most essential tools in any self-respecting DJ’s
repertoire, Jeff founded his full-scale musical production facility,
A Touch Of Jazz in 1990. With an in-demand cadre of young producers
and songwriters, A Touch Of Jazz is one of the most revered production
houses in America. A Touch Of Jazz was also responsible for the
landmark Who Is Jill Scott? the groundbreaking debut by Philadelphia’s
most celebrated soul diva. Though he already has won three Grammy
Awards, three American Music Awards, two NAACP Awards, two Soul
Train Music Awards and a MTV Music Award, the release of his new
album confirms the suspicion I had, that Jazzy Jeff is not about
to stop.

While you’re cold kicking it live in one of the more trendy
Lower Haight spots, go check out the boys in An Badhrain for some
thumping, sweaty, Saturday night techno. The crowd is a lively
European one, that is sure to get “fookin’ pissed”
till they “lose the plot”, or their Guiness in the

A quote from KCRW, LA about the label, Fluid Ounce: “Hello
is Fluid Ounce there?” ”No, I’m sorry. It’s
off the hook; try back later.” The label Fluid Ounce has
gotten rave reviews by magazines like Jockey Slut, Straight No
Chaser and Lab Mag. Yet another hot item off this label is the
UK production team, Zero dB. I’m talking heavy bass, jazzy
house and breakbeats. Everyone from Sun Ra, Suba, and Peace Orchestra
has requested their amazing remix treatments. If you like the
electronic jazz that comes with Giles Peterson, Kruder & Dorfmeister
or Rainer Truby then check out Zero dB’s American debut.

DJ's: Pako & Frederik (Amsterdam),
David Coleman & Sen Sei, Paul Guido

Last time David Coleman & Sen Sei rocked the Kinkyfunk party
at Club Six the place went out of control. You usually see them
on stage at Ruby Skye but when they’re right there jamming
out one foot away from you there’s something really special
about it. I talked to David Coleman after the show who also admitted
how great the energy was in the basement. On top of all that add
Dutch maestros Pako and Frederik headline all the way from Amsterdam.
This underground dance scene goes all night. Also check out the
artwork by artist Jamie Bishop if you can still see.

Melon
Venue: DNA
DJ's: Dano, Pauli P, Monty Luke,
The Baroness, Tracy
Music: funky house, tech house
Cover: $10, 2for 1 w/ flyer
This one’s all about the music. The Red Melon boys have
called up some reinforcements from down south for this month's
Melon party. Pauli P is one of San Diego’s most respected
DJ/producers with a history of destroying dance floors. Dano has
been in the studio putting together some new tech house gems and
ya know Monty Luke has been making quite a name for himself here
in the bay area as of late and is one of my personal favorites!.
Besides DNA has the best sound system in the city. Add the Baroness
and Tracy upstairs keeping things funky and you’ve got one
explosive mixture. This is a hell of a lineup and things are sure
to get hot.
