So
What’s Your Sister Up to?
SISTER
started in October 1997. I had just moved here from New York.
The drum & bass scene in San Francisco was exploding. It was
probably at Eklektic that someone handed me a flyer for their
very first party. The front just had the word “sister”
on it in a low-tech digital typeface. All I thought was, what
a rad idea! SISTER has
been providing estrogen and beats to the DJ culture landscape
ever since it's founding. With a hub in NYC and a network nationwide
and spanning all electronic genres, Their website includes articles,
charts, bios, interviews, press events and an extensive forum
for DJs to share ideas, information and resources. Resident DJ
Amber, has recently been selected to lecture at UCLA’s musicology
department, where they will have the first ever class entitled
“History of Electronica”. You can hear DJ Amber as
she dishes out an eclectic mix of progressive break beats and
whatever else she might fancy, DJ Samira adds in some Amsterdam
flavor to the night, with her own brand of cross genre electronica
that is lascivious, loud and poised for a Saturday night party.
Go ahead, step to my sisters! DATE: Sat. 8/31,
EVENT: SISTER, PlACE: 26 Mix,
TIME: 9pm-2am, COVER: $5 MORE

Is
Internet Radio in Danger?
Internet radio is the coolest thing since 7-11 introduced their
Double Slurpee. On the internet you can listen to any type of
music, any time, and anywhere without donating your cash to Sony
for an XM receiver. Let’s face it corporate radio sucks
but internet radio allows people of diverse musical interests
to broadcast to millions of interested listeners. Unfortunately
internet radio in the US has been completely crippled and stations
are going off the air daily because Congress passed a law that
requires internet radio stations to pay a huge fee for the songs
that they play, a fee that regular radio broadcasters do not have
to pay! It’s possible to make a difference by supporting
the Internet Radio Fairness Act. Find out MORE

True-skool the city's current hip-hop professors are holding what
they call a seminar. There aren't going to be any panel discussions
here on topics like, say, "getting your thong-split- jiggling

a one night, history of hip-hop encompassing event where truly
the masters are at work. It’s sort of like the Lou Rawls
Parade of Hip Hop Stars. Talk about triple threat-Grandmaster
Flash, Apollo, and Pam the Funkstress from The Coup, are all representing
tonight. This is deck perfection, turntable wizardry, and liquid
emceeing all wrapped up into one solid package. A bag full of
local DJs show support. EVENT: True Music Seminar,

Update
To all our fellow playmates in club land, we have been so busy
improving the site, we haven’t had time to update you on
some of the exciting-behind-the-scene stuff happening at Nitevibe.
Our Nitevibe team of roving reporters/editors is growing, offering
more angles & views on our city’s nocturnal playground.
Along with our original cast: Jessica Perri, Carla English, Leavy
Mathews, Rebecca Smith, allow us to introduce our new reporters:
Chris Wright, Gina Rivera, John McAlester, and Vanessa Wilkins.
We’ve also added some new services to make your life easier.
There is an automated event submission form, and now you can purchase
discounted tickets to the hottest parties through our one-click
Ticket Box. For your auditory enjoyment, you can read your buzz
to a selection of soundtracks, proved by Studio Distribution.
And last but not least, we’ll be featuring more photo galleries.
So
with all that work, we need a big breather. Yes! Most of us are
heading out to Black Rock City. So next week’s Buzz will
be slightly abridged version covering Thur-Sun. The full Buzz
will resume the following week starting 9/8. Remember
to let us know about any benefits, cool films, art / fashion shows,
or riots you may be inciting so we can put it in the lifestyle
section of the Buzz. Also stay tuned here for info on the Nitevibe
Anniversary Party, as well as our Party Peoples Top Ten Awards!
That’s all for now. You can always write us at editors@nitevibe.com
with any questions, stories, opinions.
Be
good and may the vibe be with you....

In addition to the exceptionally funky wide range of sound, The
Cracker
Jack guys just crack me the hell up! The flyer has
the boss from that movie Office Space on the front. The scene
where they beat the computer with a baseball bat --on the other
side. The point is, that Monday is the day you need to chill the
MOST and this party is the place to do it. So now you have the
memo. Mmmkay? Yeah. Great. See you at 9pm sharp.

Nontronika
Venue: Amber
DJ's: Nikola Baytala, Andre Lucero,
Ray Muller
Music: rock, funks
Cover: free
They’re frauds I tell you! Musically talented frauds! The
concept behind Nontronika is to lead the revolution against music
made by machines. To quote the flyer “ …there is an
escape from the oppression of dance musik propaganda!” It’s
done in classic World War 2 poster style. The thing is, that these
“party leaders” are some of the best house DJs in
San Francisco! Everyone needs a little Janes Addiction though,
and this packed crowd of leather-vintage-jacket hipsters was feeling
it. Come join the revolution and fight back with drums, guitars
and NO loops, No samples and No programmed beats!
Event:
Dr.
Friendly and Naturfrends
Venue: 2202 Oxygen Bar
DJ's: Dr. Friendly and Naturfrends
Music: ambient, electro
Cover: Free
Apparently if you suck on oxygen for twenty minutes you get high.
I prefer sucking on a joint for twenty seconds but whatevs. To
each her own. Come check out some soothing nature visuals while
listening to ambient funk at this non-alcoholic DJ hideaway. Hell,
I’m glad someone is stockpiling oxygen because after Bush
cuts down all the trees we’ll all need some fresh air. Won’t
we?
Event:
The

Venue: The Galaxy
DJ's: Delivery, Kelsone, Pash, Makintosh,

Music: hip hop, reggae

The loop features the bombastic beats that get everyone thinking
for a minute that they should have stuck with the whole break
dancing thing. It’s never too late to spin on your head.
While you’re contemplating that, the DJs will be spinning
hip-hop, reggae and funk jams that make your body rock

Happy Hour
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Resident DJs Spesh, Gil, Hyper
D, Scott Carelli, Mark Musselman
Music: progressive house, techno
Cover: $5
This happy hour is more than happy, it's manic. It's truly the
king of all electronic happy hours (which are springing up faster
than glowsticks at a rave). The place is packed with everyone
from ad execs just getting off work to those 5pm partiers just
waking up from last night. They all combine into one thumping
beat; drinking themselves silly in the name of progressive house.
Event:
Slow
Burning
Venue: Arrow Bar
DJ's: Chris Orr, Lambchop
Music: electro, 2-step, hip hop,
broken beat
Cover: $3, free b4 11pm
Slow Burning is unfortunately one of the best nights in town.
The thought actually causes a slow burning in my head as I think
about all the tragically hip strutting around the club in clothing
they made (or safety pinned) themselves. What do they think this
is freakin’ Pretty in Pink? Anyway the music is blissfully
dirty just like the décor and the DJs. This week is streetwalker—Chris
Orr the Vinyl Whore. You know he’ll be playing stuff just
to piss you off so whatever you do, don’t let on that it
bothers you. Request gay house all night. He REALLY loves that.
Event:
Therapy
Venue: Underground (201 9th St.)
DJ's: Todd Prophet, Polywog, Rafael,
Joseph Lee, Jason Lee Hayes
Music: funk
Cover: $5
Having troubles with the world? Just need someone to help you
understand it all. Try the resident counselors of therapy to clear
your mind. These aren't real doctors though, just some of the
city's finest DJ's, so you may have to self-medicate. Sweat away
your complexes to pounding, tribal
Rhythms and call me in the morning.

a movie! Bottle service available. Flirt the night away while
007 flicks play in the background.
Event:
Tom

Venue: Julip
DJ's: Tom Thump & Kelly
Music: jazzy house, breaks nu jazz
Cover: Free
I was walking around the Loin one night, feeling dazed by the
concrete jungle, or maybe it was the Stoli and Red Bulls, almost
ready to go home and call it a lame night when I stepped inside
a cozy haven called Julip. Tom and Kelly were playing all the
warm electronic jazz needed to thaw my mind and the mellow crowd
was welcoming and cleverly dressed. What is this magical place
with trees inside the venue? Oh! It’s Tom and Kelly’s
Playland and YOU thought we fell down a rabbit hole!
Event:
Transfusion
Venue: 26mix

DJ Taffy D spins glam rock while drag queens tricked out to the
nines wrestle in the middle of 26 Mix. Wha? I figure, this will
either get you totally stoked for the weekend or it’ll leave
you so freaked that you’ll have to stay home till Monday
to try and figure it all out. You can invent your own costume,
come as your favorite super hero, or as your favorite horror film
icon but be ready to wrestle. Where did I put that Swamp Thing
Costume?
Event:
Word!
Venue: Rawhide
DJ's: Halo-1, Silver, Malex, Kento
Music: funky house, breaks, 2-step
Cover: $5 b4 11pm, $10 after
For those seeking a little dancehall and breaks with their house
music, venture out to Word by Massive Selector. The night will
have the international flavors of Halo-1 and DJ Silver all the
way from my favorite hot spot, Barcelona, Spain! For all the beautiful
bouncin’ b-boys and b-girls, there will be break beats and
2 step from resident DJs Malex and Kento. But the star of night
will be Silver, bringing some tapa-licious house rhythms to the
underground house haven, Rawhide. Yum.
Event:
Combo
Venue: Velvet Lounge
DJ's: Corazon, Papi Chocolate, Sake1
and Wisdom
Music: reggae, salsa, merengue, African
and Brazilian rhythms
Cover: $TBA
I don't know if you'll see any thongs on the floor (though we
can always hope), but expect a strong showing of saucy patrons
to be dancing to rhythms that get your blood flowing. Shake your
bon bon, hon. The live salsa, lovingly brought to you by Ray Martinez
and Azabache, is inescapable, and the DJs in the lounge are fantastico!
Is that a word? Latin music in two rooms and reggae in the other.

Come bridge the gap between your ass and the dance floor at this
throw down party that unites breaks and electro. It’s the
first day of Labor Day weekend I recommend starting the whole
shebang with some fat beats, and hotties grinding to hip hop at
a venue on the water. This is not any old event you know. Three
crews have joined forces like Megatron to make it happen –Future
Primitive Sound, Mr. Brown and Massive Selector. The music is
exceptional with Stones Throw Record’s Peanut Butter Wolf,
Egon and Shortkut headlining along with local support like Coop

adding even more sugar to this sweet affair.

I’m so freakin’ tired of writing about this party.
Can’t they have a lame DJ just one week? Here we go again
with the superstar business…DJ Quivver of Virgin Records
and Cosmack UK comes to Sonic. Oakey was one of Quivver’s
first fans. As soon as he heard him he snatched him right up for
the Perfecto label. Quivver was busy at his residency at Twilo
in New York until it got shut down. He then retreated to the studio
where he remixed Dido, Culture Club, Libra, Danny Tenaglia and
Led Zeppelin. No one had remixed Led Zeppelin before! His artist
album comes out later this year and he is kept busy on new material
with Sasha working on that progressive sound until its just perfecto!

Music: hip hop, breaks, dancehall
Cover: $10
Yup it’s all about hip hop this birthday at Summer Scene.
My girls and I went to Ruby Skye last year. Apparently we brought
a crew of strangers home and had a dance party in my living room
as my roommate played DJ. The whole thing is on video including
me going in for a close up repeating, “Go me it’s
my birthday, Go me it’s my birthday!” We’re
going to avoid video cameras this year as we hit up the super
hip-hop extravaganza known as summer scene. I will be the one
on rollerskates. Ya see Summer scene is like a Brooklyn block
party but indoors. Complete with dope DJs, a break dancing competition,
graffiti art, vendors and other stuff that reminds me of home.
Go me it’s my birthday.

Venue: Ten15
DJ's: Sean Cusick, Behrouz, Bruce
Parker, Jerry Ross, Michael Anthony, Harry Who, BB Hayes, Rafael
Fiero
Music: progressive, house, techno
Cover: $20
Sean Cusick has played next to some names you may know including
Sasha, John Digweed, Josh Wink, Terry Francis, Nick Warren, Dimitri,
Three and Global Communications to name a few. Aside from DJing
he formed the production team of 'Freelance Icebreakers' with
partner Jimmy Van Malleghem. The Freelance Icebreakers just recently
completed their contract to Stress records in the UK. He has produced
tracks with house veterans Sam Mollison ("Dreams") ,
Mick Parks ("Eight Mile Sound") and Gaetan Schurer ("Unbound").
More recently Sean began a solo project called "Sean Q6 Thing"
focusing on House-Techno and Down-Groove. Sean now travels throughout
the world DJing. Not bad for a guy who started off playing the
lounge rooms in an Orlando club ten years ago.
Event:
Breakin’

Venue: An Sibin
DJ's: Gabriel & Ek-Tech
Music: electro, 2 step
Cover: $5 after 10pm
Breakin’ up is hard to do unless you’re a B-Boy and
then it’s sorta like what you do every night. I like to
go and watch the breakers do their thing every once in a while
cause my ass is to old for dancin’ to the old-ass electro.
2-step is more my speed and I can stay vertical while I do it.
The dance floor at An Sibin is gonna be full for this one so bring
your sneakers and maybe a cardboard mat.
Event:

Cover: $5
Many people know Joshua (DJ Iz) and everyone who knows him respects
his music. When the flyer says “weekly special guests”
these guests are not like the bedroom DJ from down the hall. The
guests that drop by Joshua’s nights are frequently international
superstars on their way or coming back from another gig. They
just go to Joshua’s gig for fun! Hear some tech house, funky
electro and world breaks that just seems to be a cut above the
rest.

Eight hours of music madness- till 6am. Would you expect anything
less with Spundae on Labor Day weekend? Dirty Vegas headlines
and if you haven't heard of them you automatically qualify as
a juror for the next O.J. trial. Ever since that cute girl in
the Mitsubishi commercial started doing the white girl version
of the 'snake' (yes, that's the name of that goofy dance), to
their hypnotic “Days Go By” single (nominated for
Best Dance Video in the MTV Video Awards) This UK electronica
trio has been on the fast lane to the kind of success that only
Tone Loc, Thomas Dolby and whoever did that “Whoop There
It Is” song can relate to. These guys got the kind of break
that a lot of people want to have so let's not hate - just let
it be known that they will be at 1015 with a host of deejays,
visuals and lasers creating a spectacle big enough to make you
forget that you can't make it to Burning Man this weekend

Good morning campers! Of course you are still up from the night

normal for still partying at 10am! The guest DJ is Tracy who comes
on at 11am. You know the rest of the fantastic house DJs so let’s
go out on that sunshine- flavored deck and celebrate life! No,
I’m not on any drugs right now, smartass.

Mission 6th Anniversary
Venue: Elbo Room
DJ's: The Scientist, Sep, Ludichris,
Maneesh the Twister, Jah Yzer
Music: house

Dub mission celebrates six years on the dub frontier with the
legendary Scientist. A name synonymous with the origins of Jamaican
Dub Style and with engineering perfection. From his early work
at 13 in King Tubby’s studio, to his pioneering Dub experiments
of the 80's, engineers and musicians from Kingston to Tokyo have
tried to reproduce his sound. Being that Dub Mission and I have
Birthdays one day apart, of course I will stop by sometime between
Ibiza and Ruby Skye this Sunday. Actually, the Scientist will
be so dope I might just stay here..
