Update
on The Rave Act
If there was ever a time to fight for your right to party, it’s
definitely now. Your city government, the Supes, have drafted
a resolution opposing federal anti-dance bills S 2633 and HR 3782,
and they need your support. While the California “Anti-Rave
Bill” (AB1941) has reached its second committee failure,
which will most likely kill the proposal, the federal version
is still in motion. Ravers, clubbers, and any red-blooded American
concerned about their civil liberties should take action now.
No more bitching about the man, just do it. Register your opinion

Cyberfest
- Not Just for Nerds
Don’t let the name fool you Cyberfest is not a convention
for people who have “Go UNIX!” bumper stickers. It’s
actually one of the most massive electronic music festivals in
the Bay Area. Let me get right to the point: Electric Skychurch,
Pharcyde featuring Fat Lip, Christopher Lawrence, Donald Glaude,
Ghost & Frank Nitty, DJ Swamp, DJ Skribble, Richard Humpty
Vission, East Coast Boogiemen, Bad Company (live), WishFM, Armann
the Brainchild, Joey Mazzola, Ju Ju, DJ Havoc with Intalect MCs,
Chris Fortier, Tom Slik, Dyloot, Gianni, Souls of Mischief Thomas
Trouble and Issac Hayes!? That is only about 1/4 of the lineup
that will be destroying five entertainment arenas including an
outdoor stage. Cyberfest a Coolworld production, has been celebrating
dance, music, friendship, technology, spirituality and the creative
arts for ten years now. Sounds like a bunch of raving hippies
to me, but what makes Cyberfest different is their lean toward
cool tech shit like interactive games, giant visual interactive
video and an advanced laser light show. So if you’re trying
to decide between E and mushrooms you might go for the latter.

I’d
Love to, but it’s Laundry night…
What a fresh (and clean) idea this! DJ Honeybear spins eclectic
beats while you soap up the duds. If that shirt absolutely needs
to be clean on Friday night - what better way to do chores than
with a live DJ! Brainwash is what the Germans would call “uber-hip”.
There’s cool new underground artists on the walls, a café
with your favorite beverages and full eats menu, and you can rock
out while your clothes get clean! I thought they should call this
thing Spincycle, but what do I know I’m just that guy doing
my laundry on Friday night. Event: Loser Lounge
Date: Fridays Time: 9PM-1AM
Place: Brainwash Laundromat 1122 Folsom St @

Pha Ngan! Huh? (Ko-pan-gone) is a new happy hour put on by people
who love to dance! You may know Ko Pha Ngan as a beautiful Thai
island famous for all-night magical parties for the international
underground. It’s true, people really do set their souls
free through dance on this luscious island and this crew is giving
you a taste right here in our backyard. Personally, I'm just looking
for another reason to hear resident Dj Pulsar (aka Rikki). The
first time I heard her was at a cannabis club underground event
and she shook the house with unbelievable breaks, techno, and
trance. Special guests along with Pulsar and her crew bring you
great sound and good vibes, and offer this lovely thought: "We
all know what happens when we dance - we see everything more clearly,
healing takes place, and the background noise is reduced."
Check it out! Date: Every Thursday, Time:

Venue: Justice League
DJ's: Ursula Rucker (MCs)
Music: ambient, breaks, hip hop beats
Cover: $TBA
Word princess Ursula Rucker drops knowledge over experimental
ambient hip hop beats. Some know Philly-based Ursula Rucker from
her projects with the Roots. Drum n Bass fans may know her from
her collaborations with 4Hero. Fans of the spoken word know her
from the release of her debut album entitled, "Supa Sista"
and you can get to know her this Wednesday at Justice League.
Touching on subjects ranging from female sexuality to poverty
and injustice, this protector of true poety's lastest effort involves
sharing her knowledge over experimental ambient hip hop beats.
Ursula's lyrics are not recommended for people allergic to the
truth.

Music: instrumental hip hop, downtempo,

Sometimes being known as “big in Japan”, means that
you’re guaranteed relative obsucurity here in the states
- not so with Cornelius (a.k.a. Keigo Oyamada), whose cultivated
a devoted following that loves his abstractions of pop sounds,
appealing to futuristic b-boys and rockers alike. He’s out
promoting his long-awaited album “Point”, which is
described as “atmospheric” and involves “mood-driven
soundscapes” that the critics call brilliant. His performances
incorporate a multimedia blowout complete with 3-D lights, video,
and kitsch gimmicks like karate spacemen and fantasy apes. They’ll
also be some very cute Japanese girls and boys here- so you better
style out. (CW)

Casually titled WTF? (I’m guessing for What The Fuck?);
this is the night where the club opens its doors, and its decks,
to the neighborhood armchair DJ. Has spending money on records
left you little for the finer things in life -like beer and pot?
Well you’ve found a fix. Take your precious vinyl and your
dwindling severance pay over to 26Mix and drink Buds, PBRs, Tecates,
and well drinks for only $1 a pop. Once you’ve finished
dominating the turntables, kick somebody’s ass in pool.

Venue: Edinburgh Castle
DJ's: Jon Burchard
Music: Pop, Soul, R&B, Dutchbeat,
Psychedelic Garage, Group Sounds
Cover: Free
You may be familiar with the garage sound Larry Levan pumped out
of the Paradise back in the late 70’s, but the type that
they’re spinning on Wednesday nights at the Edinburgh Castle
is of the rock variety from the early 60’s. Come check out
what kids used to dance to in the clubs, before programmed beats
ruled our lives. For visuals, think Austin Powers. Break out the
single-breasted suits, go-go boots, and mod haircuts for this
one. The Kinks, the Yardbirds, or any fuzzed-out harmonic garage
rock is just “boss” to these kids.

Music: house, brokenbeat, 2-step

Blasthaus’ fusion of art and music offers downtempo and
mind floating lounge sounds, like nu jazz, broken beat and future
breaks. This month Joypad hosts minimalist producer Tomas Jirku.
His totally computer based music is intended “to be subtle
with any use of digital manipulation” and he “adds
layers to rhythm that couldn't otherwise be achieved using conventional
studio techniques”. So…you won’t hear many melodies
you know, but you’ll catch a pounding dance floor friendly
rhythm, which provides “texture” rather than “moods”.
Ouch my head hurts. Thankfully I can ease my cranium upstairs
to the B.O.L.T. lo-tech lounge, featuring vintage gaming like
Pong!

Love Support happens every 4th Friday but the “Lost Boys”
is a special edition with the aim of giving props to the artists’
hometown of Santa Cruz. The DJs on the bill like Miguel Migs and
Andy Caldwell are certainly far from lost but you don’t
often hear Santa Cruz being attributed for this talent."These
artists are from a beach town that doesn't even have a decent
club scene," says DJ Mei-Lwun from Soulstice, "Now these
artists travel the globe playing music for thousands of people.
Between us there isn't a corner of the planet left un-rocked."
Big Up Santa Cruz!

Music: future jazz, broken beat,

Cover: Free
Vanka and Ron rock whatever the hell they like every Friday at
Movida. The music is not chosen willy-nilly by any means, though.
Vanka and Ron have the best taste in future jazz to 2-step and
dub. Just the sort of music you might want to hear on the corner
of Fillmore and Waller while you drink some sweet sangria and
ease into the weekend.
Event:
Vivid
Venue: Wish
DJ's: DJ Sol, DJ Seven
Music: Mid-tempo House

I think I might set up a cot in the back room at Wish - that way
I’d never have to leave. It’s the magical transforming
bar. Ya see, its a regular drink spot until about 11pm when the
drink specials start to rock everybody’s head, then it transforms
into an all out shake yer ass and stomp yer feet dance party!
The idea for Vivid is a slightly more laidback groove, the guys
are gonna lay down some jazzier tracks you can enjoy while chatting
up the cutie at the bar. You know so you can still hear yourself
boast.

DJ's: Wax Chef & Chelsea Star
Music: club classics, hip hop
Cover: $5, free w/ hot pants
Ah, take me back…Its 1988 and I’ve just started to
catch wind of this acid house thing. Those dance records keep
showing up next to my Smiths 12”’s at the store, and
those smiley faces on the cover (a symbol for dance music then)
are oddly enticing. Take yourself back to that same time, dancing
to mixes of A Guy Called Gerald with Information Society, Tribe
Called Quest with the Stereo M.C.’s, Lil’ Louis with
Nucleus, and many more 80’s club classics. That’s
what this night is all about. Why pay $5 at the door when you
can wear your hot pants and get in for free. So squeeze your burrito-inflated
butt into something tight, stick that goodie comb in the back
pocket, and get over to 26 Mix.
