Chillin' 12th Anniversary
Irene Hernandez-Feiks, a DJ, art curator, and fashion maven, has come a long ways with her Chillin' Productions in its 12 years of existence. From a small gathering to a full-blown sell-out soiree, Chillin' Productions has become one of THE places for local artists and designers to see and be seen. Tonight boasts 180 artists and 80 fashion designers, in addition to live painting from Ian Ross, Daryoush Bahar, and AOEO, live screen-printing by San Franpsycho, and music from Duserock, Felina, Mei-Lwun, Rondo Brothers, Russell Vargas, Terbo Ted, and the good lady herself, Irene Hernandez-Feiks. Sunset Boat Party
Well, what's this? The season has just begun and already our trusty day dancing stalwarts are giving us their first boat party! Not many bad things can be said about dancing on a boat, under the bridge, on the Bay, as the sun goes down over this beautiful and wondrous city of ours. These parties are simply some of the best, with friendly people and good vibes all around. Sunset residents J-Bird, Solar, and Galen will pump out the grooviest of house tunes with special guests Voodeux (live) and The Magnificent Seven. It's a magical way to close the weekend and set your mood straight for the rest of the week. FLUX Summit 003
DJs, producers, record labels, gear and software companies, music industry professionals, the press, and anyone else interested in music take note: Flux Summit 003 is here. Created as a way to encourage interaction and open up discussion on emerging trends between like-minded people, Flux explores the most timely "it" topics in electronic music. This evening features a lively panel discussion with Alland Byallo, David Earl (aka SFLogicNinja), and Gerry Baserman, followed by a mixer with a cash bar and complimentary food, and a music review session where DJs and producers can get instant feedback on their music from Alland, Chris Smith, and Kush Arora. Learn from some of today's leading music producers about their creative process and how they navigate through all of the increasingly powerful and inexpensive tools that are becoming available in order to create their own unique sound. If you made the annual pilgrimage to Miami then you know WMC's 25th Anniversary year was one of the best. And we survived it (enough) to capture a record amount of events for you so you can relive the moments. And for those who didn’t make it this year then let us tempt, tease and spark a fire to get you out there next year. Liquid Revolver will rotate to a different high-end venue every Tuesday for four weeks. The first in the series at Vessel starts at 9pm featuring DJ Frank Rempe from Tao in Las Vegas. Primitive Science's own Robin Weber is prepared to assault the dancefloor with dark, gritty hardcore tracks, each one leaving you asking for more! Residents Grace and War // Breaker drop progressive beats laced with an experimental flair, definitely sounds you haven't yet heard. From the same mischief makers that brought us Winter Formal, get ready to shake it at Prom: A Spring Fling. Don't worry, this isn't some podunk prom where the organizers freak out when you want to bring your lesbian lover. No, this is a dance party designed for all music lovers alike no matter what shape, size, color, gender, or orientation you might be. As long as you bring smiles and good vibes, the DJs will keep bringing the good beats to make this the awesome prom you wish you'd had in high school. Bring a hot date...or two or three. (EB)

The last one-off Qoöl happy hour that happened in March was a pretty huge success. But that's not surprising considering these folks are the gurus of happy hour clubbing affairs. This time the lineup includes Qoöl originals themselves Spesh and Silencefiction from 6 to 10pm. And, just like last time, entrance is free and Qoöl Qards will be given away (you know you want one). Hacksaw Entertainment and Metrowize have teamed up to bring us a free party featuring the Brooklyn duo Telephoned with DJ/producer Sammy Bananas from Fool's Gold and vocalist Maggie Horn. They say they're "like a cover band, but better" and Pitchfork's Amy Phillip said they were "the most fun thing I've seen at SXSW so far." Listen to the versatility of their sound with the retro grooves of "Rockin' That Thang," the techy breaks in "Pop Champagne," the dubby hip-hop beats in "Turn My Swag On," and the dancehall-esque anthem "Dancin on Me." Coming all the way from the Netherlands, C-Mon & Kypski are ready to rock San Francisco with livetronic beats. Originally a duo focused on hip-hop/electronica with producer C-Mon and award-winning turntablist Kypski, the group later evolved into a four-some band with Dutch "Keyboardist of the Year" Jori and multi-instrumentalist Daniel. Their sound is impossible to put into one genre, but try to imagine "DJ Shadow, Beck, Gogol Bordello, Fela Kuti, Super Furry Animals, and Justice crammed into a van and left to collaborate." (EB)


Event: I Got Five On It

This April has five Thursdays, so Shine put together one more little throw down featuring four stellar house DJs. Rick Preston (now based in Santa Cruz) has been spinning records for the better part of three decades and started his career playing disco and funk in the early 80's. He helped the San Francisco scene develop back in the early underground rave days with his hard-working attitude and club-rocking music. At only five dollars, it'd be hard to beat this Thursday night of high-quality house. (EB)

If you want to check out a wide range of musical genres and hear the sounds of the future, then Sound Pieces is the event for you. Lazer Sword takes you on a musical trip to the future with their glitchy hip-hop and bass. Alex B also gets into that game, dropping bumping hip-hop with booty-shaking bass. Holding it down on the dubstep tip will be Shlohmo and Bocl+Dials, each giving you that grimy, dirty beat you love so much. Geno Cochino shares his love of music and arts with the crowd, reinventing the dubstep sound into something truly his own. Now this is just a taste of who's playing at this event, if you want the full lineup, you gotta get your ass to Mighty on Thursday. (CQ)

Rediscover psychedelic and experimental music with Latin American DJ Quantic. Combining deep funk and soul, he keeps his music ever-changing while bringing together the old and the new, and never allowing just one genre to speak for him. The rich vocals and drum machines add qualities that are sometimes overlooked, yet Quantic makes sure they're prevalent within his music. Sabo helps you get down with your funky self as he flows from Brazilian, Afrobeat and Latin, while Disco Shawn also adds a tropical feel to the night, using his time spent in Buenos Aires to add some cumbia, house and baile funk to his sets. Come feel like you're on an island without actually having to leave the Bay. (CQ)

Like the mythological creatures who lured sailors to shipwreck with their enchanting music, the charming Sirens in this lineup will seduce you to the floor where you'll be mysteriously compelled to tear it up. Tsunami 9 debuts her release of dancefloor destruction onto the world tonight, flanked by the ever-talented Icon, Dulce Vita, and Loryn. No shipwrecks here, just pure, driving beats and an irresistible call to the dancefloor. (JE)

Joining him will be Julius Papp, another purveyor of house music. He blends the funky with the soulful with incredible bass, creating a sound that crowds truly love.
