Every
Style but Opera at Area 2
All
Moby’s dreams come true at his eclectic “Area”
music festivals. Largely inspired by Lalapalooza, Moby chooses
artists that do not usually share a stage together. The one thing
all the performers do have in common is that for whatever reason,
Moby likes them. This seems to be a good enough reason for him
and the tens of thousands packing 13 arenas around the country
this summer. This year’s lineup for Area 2 at Shoreline
includes legendary, David Bowie as well as Moby, Busta Rhymes,
Blue Man Group, Ash, John Digweed, DJ Tiesto, DJ Dan, Avalanches,
Dieselboy, DJ Tim Skinner and more. In an interview in April Moby
told MTV that he considers David Bowie his “favorite musician
of the 20th century," and went on to say that “…without
David Bowie, popular music as we know it pretty much wouldn't
exist." Maybe some day you and I will be able to throw an
event where we get our favorite musicians to play, but for now
Moby’s party seems pretty tight. Date:
Wed. 8/14, Time: 3:30pm, Place:
Shoreline Amphitheatre, 1 Amphitheater Pkwy. Mountain View, Admission:
$35-78.50, More

Cellspace!
Why is it that every time you turn around some aspect of our nightlife
culture is getting reamed up the ass!...Some of the best parties
in the dance community have been thrown at CELLspace and now they've
been prohibited from hosting any more large events until they
can make some structural repairs to the building. Why they are
allowed to teach dance classes or hold benefits in the building
in it's current state, yet people are prohibited from dancing
to a DJ is a mystery that only the city government knows As half
their income relies on these events, CELLspace may not recover
without the support of our community. How can you help? You can
donate money or materials to help with the renovations, attend
their benefits, or host or join their many workshops, including
youth-based events. Visit CELLspace
to see how you can contribute. For as much vision and creativity
they have provided us, it's time to give back! Location:

Boat with Sasha
With summer ending, San Francisco is finally heating up. Now’s
a great time to take that cruise along the bay without having
to stop and buy one of those dorky SF fleeces. Superstar DJ Sasha
graces the high seas spinning house, techno and progressive. I’ve
been on boat parties before, but never one with such a big name,
and never on such a fancy boat-- this is a “premier luxury
yacht.” Sasha is promoting his debut full-length artist
album, which he produced (not mixed) called “Airdrawndagger”,
so you’ll be hearing new music from this techno-luminary.
Expect many sunshiny smiles and lots of hands in the air. Date:
Thurs.8/22 Time: 6:30pm-11:00pm Place:
Pier 9 Embarcadero at Broadway Admission: $40

Stop
and Listen
Ya know, there just isn't much quality music coming from the rock
industry these days. But a stagnant scene always gives true innovators
a chance to raise the bar. Enter Beth Orton. Beth has been mixing
her liquid smooth voice with tech music gurus like William Orbit
and the Chemical Brothers. Working with electronica wizards adds
a technical aspect to her folk based songs but Beth herself likes
to leave a little room for serendipity. Sounds like a good recipe
to me and the result is a blend that has depth and soul. Take
a break from the floor stomping Monday night and check it out.
Event: Beth Orton with guests Hem and Alex Llyod. Date:
8/19, Time: 8pm, Place: Warfield
Theatre, Admission: $25.00, More

?uestlove
brings the Lesson
Seeing a live set from hip-hop group, the Roots is kind of like
checking out a jam band, sans the never-ending guitar solos. Their
improvisational sets last for hours in part due to DJ ?uestlove
(a.k.a.. Ahmir Thompson), the man who provides the background
beats to the Roots’ lyrical stylee. DJ ?uestlove is out
on tour supporting the release of his new lp “Babies Having
Babies”, and he’ll be throwing down at the Justice
League this Wednesday with a show he calls “The Lesson”,
along with special guest Sake 1 to warm the crowd up. They say
he “channels the soul”. Don’t be scared, its
visceral too- he also shakes your ass. Date:
Wed. 8/13 Time: 8:30 doors/ 9:00 show Place:
Justice League, 628 Divisadero, Admission: $13
in advance, and $15 at the door, available Ticketweb.com and MysteryMachineTickets.

Cartoon
Kablooey!
Everything is about cartoon and comic art these days: as it should
be! The bright colors and fantastic imagination exhibited in cartoon
art is echoed in club music culture, from flyer designs to the
outrageous décor adopted by some of the most popular clubs
in the city. Sometimes even club goers look like cartoons, which
definitely appeals to the belief that life really does imitate
art! Check out the cartoon museum to catch up on the latest and
historical comics of artists like Robert Crumb, Vaughan Bode,
Gilbert Shelton, Spain Rodriguez, and Trina Robbins. Yerba Buena
Center for the Arts also has a show focusing on contemporary comics
culture up until October.
Event:

A
Night in Ibiza
Venue: Skylark
DJ's: Linden C, Kelli
Music: tribal house, world breaks
Cover: $3
Linden C wrote in to tell us about his event – I just love
this line, “Drinks at recession prices.” Yep, cleverness
will get you far with Nitevibe but so will being a really fantastic
DJ - which Linden C is. Check out this magical night in Ibiza
- ok the Mission District. You have to use your imagination! It
won’t be hard as DJ Kelli is just back from tearing up the
white island and Linden is warming up for his September sessions.
Hear Balearic house beats and you may even get a limited free
mix CD.
Event:
Halflife
Venue: An Sibin
DJ's: Kryptyk, Seraphim, Aneurysm,
DJ M, Aye-n, Zigmund VoidContact
Music: drum n’ bass
Cover: Free
Even at the very edges of the Tenderloin, drum ‘n’
bass can be found streaming out of An Sibin. The locale is small
and intimate, with some of the cutest junglists I’ve ever
seen. Along with the chilled out atmosphere, the dancing elves
on the walls of the bar lure you down to the small back room designed
simply with small candles and a disco 70s multi-colored light
show bouncing crazily in time to the music. With DJ Kryptyk leading
the way, the sound is fresh, groovy and smooth, like Guinness,
which they properly pour at this bar.
Event:
Mondays
at Blind Tiger
Venue: Blind Tiger
DJ's: Benito, Jerry Ross
Music: soul, hip-hop
Cover: Free
North Beach can be a lonely place if you’re a beat junkie.
Thankfully, there’s one oasis in the middle of turntable
desert. This party had its start at Blondie’s, but has blessedly
landed at here the Blind Tiger, where you don’t have to
worry about accidentally scuffing your loafers. Strictly for the
heads.

Naughty
but Nice
Venue: Beauty Bar
DJ's: Seamie, Brine
Music: house, techno
Cover: $4
Seamie and friends host this night of funky house and techno at
the always-intimate Beauty Bar in the Mission. People ARE dancing
here and despite the lack of dance floor, it makes sense. The
beats are banging, and the music is always fresh. Try the new
Mini-Me cocktail (still waiting to
hear from the lawyers) - a delicious blend of juices and vanilla
vodka.
Event:
Mayonnaise
Venue: Skylark
DJ's: Guests, Brandin and Samira.
Residents, Melyss, Chonky T & Tonic
Music: House, Breaks
Cover: Free
This week at mayonnaise promises to be extra creamy. Melyss is
getting together with the other two ladies from the Witches Brew
Collective for a little wicked mischief. It's a good thing Chonky-T
and Tonic are gonna be there to keep the girls from burnin' down
the joint. Then again they'll probably do the job themselves.
Be ready for sexy house and edgy breaks.
Event:
Trannyshack
Venue: The Stud
DJ's: Robbie
Music: 80’s, lounge
Cover: $6
The Trannyshack drag show is entertaining for everyone whether
you wear size 13 high heels or not. This week Cockrobin presents
“Ladies of the 80’s” This could include any
number of entertaining personalities but I would bet your favorite
sequined tube top that Cher will be in there somewhere.

Music: deep house

$5 with Presale Tickets
DJ Miguel Migs of Naked Music fame always seems to be “fresh
off his European tour.” The intimate art gallery wine and
beer joint should prove an especially intimate venue compared
to the major dance floors Migs has been rocking worldwide. Andy
Caldwell from Soulstice warms things up with downtempo and deep
house. With the happy hour Qool crowd there and poised to party,
you might want to arrive early for this special event. What’s
up with Playstation sponsoring this, can we expect a DJ game soon?
I want to play the Miguel Migs character!
Event:

Venue: Sacrifice
DJ's: Vinnie Esparza, Asti Spumanti
Music: hip hop, funk, Latin
Cover: $3
You have to have heard Vinnie Esparza by now, he has a party almost
every night! They don’t keep giving nights to fools, so
you know he’s reliable. This Professor of the funk plays
supreme beats you can dance, drink, play pool or discuss rare
JB’s tracks to. If you don’t know who the JB’s
are then attendance at this night is mandatory.
Event:
Indulgence
Venue: Starlight Room
DJ's: Bruce, China Doll
Music: house, hip-hop
Cover: $10
This popular weekly by Sebastien featuring DJ’s Bruce and
China Doll, appeals to a fashionable young scene that likes getting
jiggy. Hear disco house and midtempo grooves in an elegant (looking)
atmosphere. In a past life I showed up to this event in a limo
with 6 girls in bionic outfits high out of our heads and doing
shots of vodka, and no one even batted an eye.

you probably will not hear much LL at this event but that doesn’t

Tom Thump throws down the jazzy nasty electronic funk at Nickie’s.

Music: funky house, hip hop
Cover: $5 b4 10pm
Paradox returns to the Phoenix hotel to present another installment
of SPA. Charlez B. will be
spinning “cool house” in the front, giving those frenetic
ass-shakers dancing to the 4/4 an easy escape to the bar for replenishment.
The cozy chill-out hip-hop session is in the back. Watch for security
before firing up that after work poolside joint.

Hailing from Bristol, England Starecase is based around the personalities
of Al Watson and Paul Crossman. They are known for creating “the
breakbeat four/four crossover” and according to the label
Kinetic,“… then ditching it the moment it became its
own genre.” They've now expanded into wider production values,
vocalists, some extremely strong singles and a debut album dropped
in June. Starecase has remixed some names you might know including
The Orb, Kym English, Soft Cell, Legend B, and Timo Maas. Come
and let them destroy your definition of house music today!
Event:
Pepper
Presents Pal Joey
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Pal Joey, Raw Deluxe (live),
Toph One
Music: house
Cover: $TBA
Pal Joey is a pioneer of the New York City underground house scene.
He has been rocking dance floors with a deep soulful house song
for over a decade and continues to keep up the tradition this
Friday at Pepper. Watch Minna transform into a Paradise Garage
all it’s own. This party will have body and soul unlike
what you have seen in awhile.
Event:
Are
Friends Electric?
Venue: The Galaxy
DJ's: Lee Coombs (UK), Felix The
Dog, dj Push
Music: house, brokenbeat, 2-step
Cover: $5
Every Third Friday those astronauts at the XLR8R office blast
off into the Galaxy Club with some outrageous combination of DJs
playing as many styles as I have shoes. Scenesters who pretend
they’re not, nonchalantly discuss their own events they
are throwing later that night or Saturday until the conversation
occasionally drifts to the Serotonin Allstars Softball stats.
People eventually dance not because they want to they have to
- because the DJs are bang on it! It’s like a family reunion
for people who still go out for the music and not go-go dancers.
Event:

Venue: Hi Fi Lounge
DJ's: Satva,Alexander, Kelsone
Music: hip hop, breaks

This new weekly at the Hi Fi features residents Kelsone and Delivery.
The guests this week is Satva (who really dosen’t need a

sometimes too. Alexander of Transit Productions also guestars.

House music extraordinaire DJ Keoki headlines the latest mega-events
gracing the Hotel Ibiza. All the way from Sapphire Lounge he is
celebrating the release of his new album, Zombie Cocktail 3. Drop
by his website (somebody has been working VERY hard on it! Site
). It will probably explode your computer, which should be a pretty
good indication of how spectacular this party will be. Along with
the throng of other DJs, including DJ DRC, Little Miss Large (UK),
Nick Twisted (Seattle) and our own Joey Mazzola there are 6 whole
dance floors to explore so you might never escape this LONG night
of debauchery. Also, the theme is Devils and Angels, so it’s
your choice: are you in heaven or are you in hell? With all the
exotic dancers and fire entertainers, it just might be the latter.

It’s a “boogie night style disco porn party”.
Yes, that’s correct. On the front of the flyer is a girl
wearing low-slung hot-pants featuring her ass-crack. She’s
also on roller skates. I’m not sure about the hot pants,
but my question is will they actually let me where roller skates
inside the club? Everyone knows I love to whenever possible. Frenchy
le Freak headlines with soulful house while DJs I-Cue and Danny
Brown throw down hip-hop in the Rare Groove Lounge. Remember it’s
not the amount of “ice” you have shimmering on your
neck and hands, it’s more about exploring your “inner
Bling.”

The Rock is going to kick your candy ass! I just love when that
wrestler guy says that. Kelly’s is the spot to be in the
summertime and this huge massive of DJs (I didn’t even list
them all) will be sure to blow up the spot for a proper August
jammy jam. Hear old school new school and classic club favorites
in a few different rooms. “But remember, no matter what

Cover: $10 + donation
The house community is coming together once again in order to
help a friend in need. Miss Audrey was seriously injured in a
car accident over Memorial Day weekend and the bills are piling
up. It’s pretty cool to see a group of DJ’s as prolific
as these volunteer their talents for free. 100% of the door and
10% of the drinks go directly to the cause. If you haven’t
made it to one of the other benefits then really, make it to this
one.

Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Miguel Migs, Lisa Shaw (Live
Performance), Maurcio Aviles
Music: garage, house
Cover: $12
Devotion is renown for bringing out the historical classic garage
DJs but what about the new flavored soulful house? Devotion has
that too – especially this week as some of the best of the
Naked Music crew make an appearance. Singer, Lisa Shaw will perform
live while Miguel spins the beautiful sexy beats he is known for.
Mauricio Aviles also in the house quite literally. This will definitely
be the highlight of your weekend. So despite your hangover don’t
sleep!
Event:
Sunkiss
Venue: Kelly’s Mission Rock
DJ's: Jeno, David Harness, Matt Valenz,
keebo, Frank Dominguez, Dave Sefton, Kevin Armstrong, Solomon
Music: house, garage
Cover: $20
All these new parties trying to feature every damn genre under
the sun—this one’s not like that. Sunkiss is a daytime
brunch extravaganza where the only thing on the menu is raw house
beats ranging from house to house with some garage and then some
more soulful house. There is also some house music in the side
room. Despite the lack of diversity, It’s very filling.
Going from 2pm-10pm.
Event:
Bionic
Venue: The Top
DJ's: Solar, Iz
Music: deep house, tech house, 80’s
Cover: $5
It is scary how much fun I have had at this blazing night of house
music at the Top. It should be illegal - I’m sure it has
been considering the slew of boat party folks that drift in after
all is docked and heads are fucked. The packed dance floor is
never a scene always a friendly vibe where getting down is the
only priority.
