Every Style but Opera at Area 2
All Moby’s dreams come true at his eclectic “Area” music festivals. Largely inspired by Lalapalooza, Moby chooses artists that do not usually share a stage together. The one thing all the performers do have in common is that for whatever reason, Moby likes them. This seems to be a good enough reason for him and the tens of thousands packing 13 arenas around the country this summer. This year’s lineup for Area 2 at Shoreline includes legendary, David Bowie as well as Moby, Busta Rhymes, Blue Man Group, Ash, John Digweed, DJ Tiesto, DJ Dan, Avalanches, Dieselboy, DJ Tim Skinner and more. In an interview in April Moby told MTV that he considers David Bowie his “favorite musician of the 20th century," and went on to say that “…without David Bowie, popular music as we know it pretty much wouldn't exist." Maybe some day you and I will be able to throw an event where we get our favorite musicians to play, but for now Moby’s party seems pretty tight. Why is it that every time you turn around some aspect of our nightlife culture is getting reamed up the ass!...Some of the best parties in the dance community have been thrown at CELLspace and now they've been prohibited from hosting any more large events until they can make some structural repairs to the building. Why they are allowed to teach dance classes or hold benefits in the building in it's current state, yet people are prohibited from dancing to a DJ is a mystery that only the city government knows As half their income relies on these events, CELLspace may not recover without the support of our community. Spundae/Kinkyfunk Boat with Sasha
With summer ending, San Francisco is finally heating up. Now’s a great time to take that cruise along the bay without having to stop and buy one of those dorky SF fleeces. Superstar DJ Sasha graces the high seas spinning house, techno and progressive. I’ve been on boat parties before, but never one with such a big name, and never on such a fancy boat-- this is a “premier luxury yacht.” Sasha is promoting his debut full-length artist album, which he produced (not mixed) called “Airdrawndagger”, so you’ll be hearing new music from this techno-luminary. Stop and Listen
Ya know, there just isn't much quality music coming from the rock industry these days. But a stagnant scene always gives true innovators a chance to raise the bar. Enter Beth Orton. Beth has been mixing her liquid smooth voice with tech music gurus like William Orbit and the Chemical Brothers. Working with electronica wizards adds a technical aspect to her folk based songs but Beth herself likes to leave a little room for serendipity. Sounds like a good recipe to me and the result is a blend that has depth and soul. Take a break from the floor stomping Monday night and check it out. ?uestlove brings the Lesson
Seeing a live set from hip-hop group, the Roots is kind of like checking out a jam band, sans the never-ending guitar solos. Their improvisational sets last for hours in part due to DJ ?uestlove (a.k.a.. Ahmir Thompson), the man who provides the background beats to the Roots’ lyrical stylee. DJ ?uestlove is out on tour supporting the release of his new lp “Babies Having Babies”, and he’ll be throwing down at the Justice League this Wednesday with a show he calls “The Lesson”, along with special guest Sake 1 to warm the crowd up. Cartoon Kablooey!
Everything is about cartoon and comic art these days: as it should be! The bright colors and fantastic imagination exhibited in cartoon art is echoed in club music culture, from flyer designs to the outrageous décor adopted by some of the most popular clubs in the city. Sometimes even club goers look like cartoons, which definitely appeals to the belief that life really does imitate art! Check out the cartoon museum to catch up on the latest and historical comics of artists like Robert Crumb, Vaughan Bode, Gilbert Shelton, Spain Rodriguez, and Trina Robbins. Yerba Buena Center for the Arts also has a show focusing on contemporary comics culture up until October.

Check out this magical night in Ibiza - ok the Mission District. You have to use your imagination! It won’t be hard as DJ Kelli is just back from tearing up the white island and Linden is warming up for his September sessions. Hear Balearic house beats and you may even get a limited free mix CD.

Even at the very edges of the Tenderloin, drum ‘n’ bass can be found streaming out of An Sibin. The locale is small and intimate, with some of the cutest junglists I’ve ever seen. Along with the chilled out atmosphere, the dancing elves on the walls of the bar lure you down to the small back room designed simply with small candles and a disco 70s multi-colored light show bouncing crazily in time to the music. With DJ Kryptyk leading the way, the sound is fresh, groovy and smooth, like Guinness, which they properly pour at this bar.

Every Third Friday those astronauts at the XLR8R office blast off into the Galaxy Club with some outrageous combination of DJs playing as many styles as I have shoes. Scenesters who pretend they’re not, nonchalantly discuss their own events they are throwing later that night or Saturday until the conversation occasionally drifts to the Serotonin Allstars Softball stats. People eventually dance not because they want to they have to - because the DJs are bang on it! It’s like a family reunion for people who still go out for the music and not go-go dancers.

Also, the theme is Devils and Angels, so it’s your choice: are you in heaven or are you in hell? With all the exotic dancers and fire entertainers, it just might be the latter.

It’s a “boogie night style disco porn party”. Yes, that’s correct. On the front of the flyer is a girl wearing low-slung hot-pants featuring her ass-crack. She’s also on roller skates. I’m not sure about the hot pants, but my question is will they actually let me where roller skates inside the club? Everyone knows I love to whenever possible. Frenchy le Freak headlines with soulful house while DJs I-Cue and Danny Brown throw down hip-hop in the Rare Groove Lounge. Remember it’s not the amount of “ice” you have shimmering on your neck and hands, it’s more about exploring your “inner Bling.”

The house community is coming together once again in order to help a friend in need. Miss Audrey was seriously injured in a car accident over Memorial Day weekend and the bills are piling up. It’s pretty cool to see a group of DJ’s as prolific as these volunteer their talents for free. 100% of the door and 10% of the drinks go directly to the cause. If you haven’t made it to one of the other benefits then really, make it to this one.

Singer, Lisa Shaw will perform live while Miguel spins the beautiful sexy beats he is known for. Mauricio Aviles also in the house quite literally. This will definitely be the highlight of your weekend. So despite your hangover don’t sleep!

There is also some house music in the side room. Despite the lack of diversity, It’s very filling. Going from 2pm-10pm.

It is scary how much fun I have had at this blazing night of house music at the Top. It should be illegal - I’m sure it has been considering the slew of boat party folks that drift in after all is docked and heads are fucked. The packed dance floor is never a scene always a friendly vibe where getting down is the only priority.
