San Francisco Hearts Haiti
While many of us have been affected by the stories and images coming out of Haiti and have been moved to help, it is not easy to know how or where to start. One simple way to contribute to the cause as well as send out much needed positive vibes to the Haitian people is this event. Bringing together some of the Bay Area's best bands and solo artists, world beat maestros Sila and Maisha Productions have organized a benefit concert for earthquake relief, with all proceeds being donated to Doctors Without Borders. The stellar lineup incorporates a diverse mix of genres and musical styles: Afrobeat, Latin, reggae, bhangra, soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, dub/downtempo, and more from Sila, Kalbass Kreyol (from Haiti), Bayonics, Native Elements, Joe Bagala, Meklit Hadero, Thank You Julius, and DJ sets by Jeremiah w/ Afrobeat Nation, Non-Stop Bhangra DJs, Felina, Amar & Electric Vardo Live, and J-Boogie. Have fun and know that you are actually doing something to help in the aftermath of this crisis. Date: Wed 1/27, Time: 8pm, Place: The Independent, Cover: $10, More Info (JE)

Flux Summit Recap
Last week, the second Flux Summit hosted a town-hall style meeting to address the most pressing issue facing our music scene: what's shakin down SF music venues? Officials in California's ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) and the SF police force seem to think that the late night music and club scene is a noisy nuisance that the city would be better off without. They have slapped venues with unfair indictments and harassed legitimate, law-abiding businesses. They are forgetting that SF is world famous for its nightlife, bringing in thousands of tourists eager to go out every night of the year. If we don't act soon, we will continue lose these cherished establishments. I don't know if I can stress the seriousness of this situation enough: we are under attack and we need to act. Lets make our voices heard! Call Gavin Newsom's office (415-554-6141) on February 9th's Call the Mayor Day and your district supervisor and tell them how you feel about the ABC/SFPD crack down on our well-respected and beloved music venues. You can also join the California Music and Culture Association and Stop the War on Fun to stay informed about the situation and learn more about how you can get involved. Don't give up our music without a fight! (EB)

Scion Presents: Fashion Feud

Shrive, and Alexandria Von Bromssen are given one hour to create a design and prepare for the runway on stage, with models having a walk-off on stage with their newly designed outfits. San Francisco fashion mavens and entrepreneurs Bacca da Silva, Olivia Ongpin, and Amy Leblanc will be sitting in as the official judges, but--here's where you come in--the audience will help by choosing the best designer of the evening with their resounding applause! In addition, a wealth of local indie vendors will be on hand selling their crafty goods. Just like the TV show--only way better. The Donner Party
Um, what part of "throughout the event JohnJohn's now legendary performance crew will be adapting the Donner Plight into elaborately choreographed performances to be filmed, edited, and transformed into a lip-sync opera starring your most beloved Pioneers" DON'T you want to see? This high concept rigmarole will be put on this Saturday in Golden Gate Park against the backdrop of "Jimmy"- an enormous abstract covered wagon (one of the most impressive mutant vehicles out on the playa 2 years running) and promises, in true Donner fashion, to be "dripping with blood" by the end of the day. In addition to acting out one of American history's most grim and ghastly moments (fun!), there will be live folk music, brass, square dancing, and grilled meats. So come prepared in your most pioneer-like/cannibalistic gear and get ready for this blood splattering westward hoedown with all the trimmins'.
