The Edwardian Ball Weekend
Edward Gorey's illustrated books, with their vaguely ominous air and ostensibly Victorian and Edwardian settings, have long had a cult following. Their macabre themes and rather dreary plots give a distinct dark edge to what otherwise might be considered children's literature--which is perhaps why San Francisco, a city full of playful yet mischievous revelers, has devoted an entire weekend of art, music, theater, fashion, and technology to paying homage to the offbeat imaginings of the man himself. Friday night's Edwardian World's Faire celebrates turn of the century splendor with live performances by Vagabond Opera, Agent Ribbons, Kinetic Steam Works, Dark Garden with Fou Fou HA!, and more amidst four exhibition halls. Plus, new this year, The Edwardian Bazaar & Croquet Gardens. Then on Saturday, at the 10th Annual Edwardian Ball, co-hosts Rosin Coven and Vau de Vire Society bring Gorey's "The Evil Garden" and other stories to life amongst a bevy of dark parlour, circus vaudvillian, burlesque, and other creepily beautiful performers. It's a sea of the most decadently weird entertainment available. Date: Fri 1/22 & Sat 1/23, Time: 8pm-2am, Place: Regency Ballroom, Cover: $25-76, More Info (JE)

The Bright River
A Mass Transit Tour of the Afterlife
The Bright River is a beat-box musical that is part Sam Spade, part Dante's Inferno, part love story, and part socio-political commentary. It takes the audience on a mass transit ride of the afterlife while fusing modern theatre techniques with bodkin, a traditional Hassidic street theatre style that was popular during early 20th Century Manhattan. Writer and performer Tim Barsky first debuted his masterpiece in 2004, which led to a sold out run that lasted into '05. Now the show is back again for all of us that missed it the first time around. This run will only last until February 20th, so get your tickets soon! Come early and stay late because DJs will spin in the lobby for an hour before and after each show. Date: Jan 8--Feb 20, opening night Wed 1/13, Time: Thur--Sat 8pm, Sun 7pm, Place: Brava Theater Center (2781 24th St @ York), Cover: $17-35, More Info (EB)
