Detroit
Mayor Plays SF!
Mayor of the electronic music scene, that is. DJ/Producer Carl
Craig visits SF for ASS BOMB. (Damn, that’s a good name)
The event thrown by those X-raver Spoken Word Nerds, Bored Collective
takes place at Club Six and also features DJs Jonah Sharp (Reflective
Records),
Monty Luke (Justice League Soundsystem) and Chris Orr. Yeah, another
party - so what’s the big deal? The big deal is the genius,
creative diversity and overall accomplishments of Carl Craig!
Read his profile…
Know
Your Dj :
Name: Carl Craig
AKA: Paperclip People, Psyche/BFC, Innerzone
Orchestra, 69
Origin: Detroit
Music: techno, house, experimental jazz
Regarded As: One of the most innovative, and
diverse producers in the world and a historic figure in electronic
music history (after techno Godfathers Derrick May, Jeff Mills,
Juan Atkins). He contributed to the emergence of techno and
it’s popularity in Europe which in turn blew up the rave
scene paving the way for most of the DJs and producers today.
Style: With early influences ranging from Miles
Davis, to Led Zeppelin, The Smiths and Stevie Wonder, Carl combined
funk, jazz and soul influences with the emerging electronic
sound of the mid 1980’s, carrying on the emotional Detroit
techno tradition. He Later crossed into more house dance floor
sounds under “Paperclip People” and explored live
jazz with the “Innerzone Orchestra” His track “Bug
in the Bassbin” which incorporated beatbox samples is
regarded as an important influence on the early UK drum+bass
scene.
Got Started: Apprenticing with techno pioneer
Derrick May after handing a home-engineered tape to a mutual
friend. Carl was invited to tour Europe with May’s “Rhythm
is Rhythm” tour which joined Kevin Saunderson’s
tour “Inner City” on some dates in 1989.
Famous For: starting Planet
E the label
, creating the Detroit
Electronic Music Festival
, and his numerous albums and overall contributions to electronic
music. Carl has also remixed artists like Herbie Hancock, Tori
Amos, worked with artists such as Leon
Ware
and continues to headline clubs, raves and festivals throughout
the world.

The
SF Entertainment Commission Lives!
In the wake of the proposed R.A.V.E ACT on everyone’s mind,
check out some positive local news! On Friday, July 26th, Mayor
Willie Brown signed the Entertainment Commission legislation,
which makes official the San Francisco Entertainment Commission
starting July 2003! That means all entertainment permit decisions
would be made by the San Francisco Entertainment Commission (and
not by the general city government.) Supervisors Leno and Newsom
also introduced an ordinance based on suggestions from Mayor Brown
outlining a plan for the Entertainment Commission to be financially
self-sustaining. The ordinance proposed that fees for obtaining
permits for clubs would funnel back into the Entertainment Commission’s
Budget rather than the city general fund and police department
budget. The Entertainment Commission Fund Ordinance is now in
the thirty-day public comment period. It will be assigned to a
public hearing in early September and voted on soon after. Read

Musical Meandering
Venue: Deluxe
DJ's: Smeejay (Gus)
Music: rare groove, funk, downtempo,
breaks
Cover: Free
DJ Smeejay (AKA Gus) plays drinking songs ranging from “exactly
what you love” to “whatever the hell he wants”.
I have seen this DJ praised by some of SF’s finest DJs and
veteran partiers as he smoothly transitions from hip-hop to house
to funk and R&B. I have also seen him throw on “Spirit
in the Sky” in the middle of a set or “Midnight at
the Oasis” and somehow the shit all coheses into an abstract
musing everyone relates to.

This weekly D+B rinse out sponsored by Circa brings through big
headz on a Tuesday. This week is Marcus Intalex of the Metalheadz

and absorb rumbling beats until the only dilemma left on your
mind is whether or not you should continue to sit there with your
ass vibrating, or get up and dance.

Hear hip-hop, punk and 2-step at this regular hang for eclectic
beat experts and their families. Graff artists, skateboarders,
international DJs, writers and creators of general mischief stop
by on the regular. One of my favorite memories was when the resident
DJ Toph One, brought his mom along on Frank Sinatra’s Birthday.
She was brilliant wearing prescription glasses that 80’s
wannabe-hipsters would die for. In between all the classic hip-hop
and electro was of course Frank Sinatra. We all sand Luck be a

The
Real Deal
Venue: Storyville
DJ's: Grand Wizzard Theodore
Music: hip-hop
Cover: $TBA
There once was a boy playing records too loudly in his room. As
he took one ear away from the headphones to respond to his mother,
he only half heard what he was doing with his hand to stop the
record temporarily. He liked the sound and scratching was born
as a technique by Grand Wizard Theodore circa 1975. Theodore made
his debut at 11 years old standing on milk crates at a block party.
Last week in NYC some of the biggest names in hip hop gathered
to commemorate his 27th anniversary. You can too this week at
Storyville.

Breathe
Venue: Border Cantina
DJ's: LuLu, Unity, Christian Clark
Music: house, breaks
Cover: Free
The new weekly, “Breathe” at the Border Cantina delivers
soulful, sexy, bass heavy house music for you and your ass. I
separate the two because I think your ass may feel the need to
shake on the dance floor – while your stomach may be saying
“Hold up! I just ate three tacos.” Like the ancient
Nepalese proverb says: Never listen to an ass unless it’s
your own. (Ok I made that up but its sounds pretty wise right?)

d:Code, n:Code who can get it straight? The only thing these alternating
parties have in common is an affinity for industrial music. Go
figure. The d: code party also features drum n’ bass and
electro. I give it to the Code parties for style originality and
overall appearance. Stay tuned to this channel for the benefit
hosted by Wil Wheaton? More on that later.

You see, usually you would have to go to several different clubs
to hear Mike Bee playing drum n’ bass, Solar playing deep
house, Tomas playing 2-step/ hip-hop and Bre-ad playing electro.

Townhouse features one of SF’s most respected DJs, Gavin
Hardkiss with Jesse Brooks of Kinetic grooves in LA. I don’t
actually find myself frequenting this mega rave venue that often.
The parties that go on there can be described as something I like
melted on my burger or perhaps eaten with a fine wine. But big
does not always mean bad as exemplified by Townhouse. Simply great
house music with some mellower stuff happening in the ZenCity
Lounge (minus the go go dancers and Mardi Gras theme.)

Bad Boy Bill from Chicago is a fantastic DJ undeniably. I wish

this is just a manifestation of his hard house sound. Bill began
mixing records at 14 and got his big break when WBMX’s Farley
Jackmaster Funk gave him his first broadcast gig on the station.
He went on to emerge as one of the hottest turntablists in Chicago
and in 1988 took top honors in the Midwest division of DMC's DJ
Battle. Bill went on to spin records throughout the world, maintained
a long-term DJ residency in Germany, hosted "Street Mix,"
