DANCEfirst! Visioning the Future:
This Thursday, "see. think. dance." and the Museum of the African Diaspora will explore the modern music phenomenon known as house, which transformed San Francisco into a city of DJs and dancers. The evening showcase features three local choreographers: Jocquese (aka JoQ) with DJ Andre creating "dance theatre of harmonious abstraction with Vogue at its foundation," Lauren with DJ Tagnia reinterpreting the African aesthetic of call and response to the steady 4x4 rhythm of house (which originated in the gay black dance community in Chicago), and Rashad (aka Soul Nubian) with DJ Damon Bell paying homage to the culture, history and rituals of Afro/electro/house dance music with a Pan-African performance. Bassyx @ Nightlife at the CAS
The first time Bassyx took over the decks at the California Academy of Sciences for Nightlife it was a huge hit, with 3500 people in attendance and people begging to do it again. So, back by popular demand, Bassyx returns to Nightlife with Ace & Gunz w/ Ammo on the drums as Mad Science! Joining them are vocalist Tara Vel, and Al Kal in the downtempo lounge/Aquarium. As a pioneer of the sounds of dub, Lee "Scratch" Perry has been making records for over 40 years. He has worked with and produced many of the greats of the ragga and reggae scenes. Named by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest musicians of all time, 73 year old Perry continues to tour and produce. Though he is considered more of a performance artist nowadays than a producer, he is considered by many to be one of the grandfather's of dub and continues to inspire to this day.
