Hip-Hop Meets Couture
Hip-hop is more than just music. It's also a lifestyle with its own artforms that go beyond DJs and MCs into the very fabric of popular culture. On top of breakdancing, beatboxing, slang, and graffiti, many of today's fashion trends come from hip-hop culture. For the 4th Annual "Where Hip-hop Meets Couture" Artist Showcase, hip-hop fans and industry professionals will celebrate this merger of music and fashion with live performances on two stages showcasing local artists, like NBA All-Star game after party DJ, Juice, and a few out-of-towner talents like Chicago's DJ Lee Farmer, leader of the Soul Selector DJs and featured DJ at the Grammy's afterparty. Among the featured designers will be Ed Hardy, Toby Tyler, and Cezar NYC showing off their hip-hop infused fashions and high couture. Date: Fri 11/6, Time: 7-11pm, Place: San Francisco City Hall (1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place), Cover: $40 presale, $50 door, $100 VIP, More Info (EB)

Mission Indie Mart
Tired of the ubiquitous mass-produced clothes and styles that bombard and brainwash us into looking like everybody else? Escape the mainstream by coming to the Mission Indie Mart, a refuge for style-conscious urban-dwellers who want to escape the corporate fashion world. This year they have Do-It-Yourself designers, local shops, vintage assortments, cool skateboards, trippy posters, hip zines, local authors and more. It's gonna be a happening, commercial-free shopping experience that's nothing like the mall. Date: Sun 11/8, Time: 12-6pm, Place: Thee Parkside (1600 17th St), Cover: no cover, More Info (EB)

Liminal Rez
The soulful work of Android Jones--whether it be of charcoal, pencil, oils, digital art, or human bodies themselves--reveals a theme of self exploration (he's got a collection of 1000 self-portraits) and dark fantasy, often conjuring up images of destruction, re-birth, and fiery dreamscapes filled with blood, sweat, and tears. What better, then, to provide the soundtrack to his latest art opening than the deep, multi-layered, and sexy downtempo sounds of Random Rab, along with another of Android's favorite musical influences, Brion Charles. Alongside new multimedia manifestations of Jones' latest journeys in search of creative inspiration will be a series of new traditional work as well as several master versions of earlier classical work. There will also be a special Pha-Droid performance to complete the evening. This will truly be a special night of fusion between art, music, and inspiration. Date: Sat 11/7, Time: 7-11pm, Place: Push Studios (864 Folsom St), Cover: no cover, More Info (JE)
