Underground parties here in the city often provide some of the greatest dj talent in progressive and tribal house music—only problem is you have to know where to look. Now you don’t have to! This month at FLUX some great underground talent is emerging at an aboveground location. The only entertainment was an all-white-boy band attempting Busta Rhymes covers. I’m serious.

Last week on a MUNI bus (6 Parnassus) this homeless guy had a boom box blasting the song “Coldsweat” by James Brown. This party would make KRS proud. All hip-hop elements are represented. This long running night by “On the One’s” Paul Craven received the honor of the best night under $5 in the SF Weekly. It’s all true. At one point your ass just starts moving whether your head likes it or not.

Go here, check this. Stacey Pullen from Detroit came up under the influence of techno originators like Derrick May and Juan Atkins. He got his start with the help of Derrick May around 1990 and is considered one of the techno- Mecca’s leading contemporary artists. Stacey started out releasing some of the first tribal tech-house sounds under the name, “Bango”. Later he was known as the “Kosmik Messenger”, “X-Stacey” and more recently “Silent Phase.” Stacey fuses the more melodic house and garage sound with a traditional techno style. In addition to his own releases he has also been featured as part of the esteemed DJ Kicks series on label, K7.

Theme parties are my favorite. Check this out. The “Stoplight” theme means you wear the color according to the amount you want to be harassed by the opposite sex. Red means, “fuck off. (I’m chilling with my friends)”, Yellow means, “ It depends what kind of car you drive (or `proceed with caution) and Green means “Hell yeah! I came to get down. (or Go!) ”Ladies in green skip to the front of the line. (Big surprise). The music ranges from trance to hip-hop - never really understood that combo but whatever. This event is brought to you by The Drink Club, Element and Beyond Ent.

The first Friday of every month is Oxygen by Metrojazz. DJs Julius Papp and Franky Boissy always do a nice job easing you out of the work mindset and into a sexy Friday night on the town. Yeah, it’s not your typical go-go disco house vibe, but it’s also where all the cool kids hang out - you know the one’s with the asymmetrical haircuts?

The Underground has a new beginning according to the Ruben Mancias and David Harness. The two have teamed up to bring you Body Music. The last party they did together, Anthem was off the chains and again this party will be a testament to their love for sharing music, bringing people together and getting drunk. Just kidding about the last part but you get the picture. They are trying to rock it old-school underground style. This is the opening night.

A midsummer Mardi Gras is going off at Ibiza so break out the beads, masks and feathers. Unlike some events, this party does not present itself like the whole goal is to see girls’ boobs but I’m not going to say it won’t happen. After all, it is the spot with a twenty-person hot tub and it’s Mardi Gras. Expect a fusion of progressive house and New Orleans jazz. (That would be cool, though. Don’t you think?)

The Melon Party is on a new night so don’t plex. It’s still the same great house music with same great vibe you know from their monthly and their boat party, Watermelon. Always a good night at the bar, jokes one of the bartenders. This party by Electrocelt gets a heavy Irish crowd who seriously likes to party like rockstars dancing until the very last progressive house note is played. Guests in the past have included international heads like Taylor, Sean Cusick and local leaders of the new school like this week’s Seamie, David Coleman and Sen Sei. (FYI. This party is usually the first Friday)

Kojak is a badass man with great taste in music. Vinnie Esparza and Cool Chris accompany him at Hush Hush flexing their musical muscle and knowledge. Take a lesson from these funkologists and see how all your favorite hip-hop, funk, breaks and rare grooves tie together on the Kojak family tree.

Charlie don’t surf and Lombardi and Phil don’t do house. They are revolting against those cheerful vocals, four-four beats and disco inspired melodies. I could use a break from it myself. Bob your head to some brokenbeat, electro funk and whatever the hell else they feel like playing at this mellow skater-friendly sangria loving bar o’ bull.

This tradition at the top started as an 80's night by some of the best house DJ's in town. It's mostly house now with some deep disco and electro thrown in for good measure. The DJs have as much fun as the crowd, which seems to be appreciated by the packed local crowd who return there religiously on Sunday evening. It’s also cool because you never know what International star DJ will drop by for a surprise set. Iz and Solar just got it like that.

I can’t help but hear the theme from “COPS” when I heard about this new party. Apparently this is "where the rough come to tumble” and it goes down every Sunday with your resident selectors DJ Anna from (Future Primitive Sound Session, Beta Lounge) and Philip Sherburne (Trouble, Charlie Don’t Surf) and a rotating cast of sketchy characters, thugs and recent parolees playing the music that your mom warned you about. Are you brave enough to take sides in the cop/pimp turf war?
