of a Floating World
Still trying to decide if you're going to make the trek out to
Black Rock City this year? If you haven't been to Burning Man,
have you wondered what the hell is really going on at that crazy
carnival out in the middle of the desert? Here's a sneak peek:
The Black Rock Arts Foundation and Burning Man are inviting the
public to view the artwork that's been designed for Burning Man
2002-The Floating World. These are some insane and genius creations.
(I’ll never forget the gigantic fifty-foot ass I crawled
through with a slide down the front like a penis. The theme was
the body ) Check the goods out for this year’s theme and
catch a glance of the madness that's going to light the desert
night afire! Date: Tuesday, July 30th Time:
7PM Admission: $15-$20, sliding scale, Location:

FLUX
Underground
parties here in the city often provide some of the greatest dj
talent in progressive and tribal house music—only problem
is you have to know where to look. Now you don’t have to!
This month at FLUX some great underground talent is emerging at
an aboveground location. I first saw special guest Dj Barefoot
(orangeAge) underground a few weeks ago and was caught by delicious
surprise in the dance frenzy he created in his crowd. Barefoot
and friend Reid Oda (orangeAge) will join resident dj’s
Jason Knight (SDR) and ASG (SDR) for a night of big, gnarly music.
Check it out! Date: Friday, August 2nd Time:
9pm-2am Admission: $3 b4 10pm; $5 after Location:

Event:
Mondays
Venue: The Redwood Room
DJ's: Consuelo
Music: nu-jazz, downtempo
Cover: Free
I’m on vacation visiting my family in NJ. It’s 95
degrees here. However, if you’re family is visiting you
in SF -- here is a little spot the whole family will love. It’s
at the Clift hotel. It’s respectable; you can bring your
parents there, without fear of anyone trying to sell ecstasy to
your mom. The jazzy electronic vibe brought to you by DJ Consuelo
could almost pass as a new version of “smooth jazz”
to the very untrained drunken ear. Don’t worry there will
still be a few hipsters there for you to flirt with across the
bar.
Event:
Minimal
Monday
Venue: Hush Hush
DJ's: Joe Rice, Forest Green, Chris
Burfine, Terrac+
Music: ambient, minimal techno, downtempo

This is one for all my friends who are layed off sitting at home
watching Jenny Jones. Sell some clothes at Buffalo, donate old
books, dump that asshole, give me your Prada sling backs, in conclusion
-- minimize your crap. You don’t need extra bullshit in
your head, life, or your music. When you are finished downsizing
head over to Minimal Monday and have some Jack on the rocks.

Tuesdays
Venue: The Cellar
DJ's: Netamp, Rob, O, O-Dub, Gaborro
Music: breaks, hip-hop
Cover: $4
To tell you the truth I have no idea what this brand new party
is like except that we’re working with some hip-hop, breaks
and house. When I get back from vacation I’ll probably check
it out. Apparently there are $1 shots and $3 cocktails. $1 shots?
That’s what I’m talking about. I was just in tropical
Rehoboth, Delaware -- the shots were like $5! The only entertainment
was an all-white-boy band attempting Busta Rhymes covers. I’m
serious.
Event:
Coldsweat
Venue: Fuse
DJ's: you
Music: mixed formats
Cover: Free
Last week on a MUNI bus (6 Parnassus) this homeless guy had a
boom box blasting the song “Coldsweat” by James Brown.
Everyone (from young hip hop heads to middle aged ladies to the
bus driver) started singing along. Forget the rules and let the
people play music! That’s what this night is talking about.
Hear a range of music and talent from “DJ No One”
to “DJ Holy-shit-he’s-dope” at the city's premiere
weekly open-deck session.

Venue: Cell Space
DJ's: TBA
Music: hip-hop, electro, house

Bounce, rock, skate, roll at Cell Space. Do you have roller skating
outfits specifically set aside for these events like me? This
weekly at Cell Space is a veritable roller disco jamboree with
everything from house to hip-hop. The skates are provided by Skates
on Haight. (Unless of course you have your own personalized skates
with your initials embroidered on them like some people might.)

Indulgence
Six Year Anniversary
Venue: Starlight Room
DJ's: Bruce, Chinadoll
Music: disco, funk, hip, house
Cover: $10-15
Looking to get out of work for this Wednesday? How about a holiday...
you can tell your boss that our very own Mayor Wilie Brown has
proclaimed July 31 San Francisco’s official INDULGENCE DAY.
Sebastien and crew invite you to indulge the night away with DJ
Bruce & Chinadoll. Yay, and did you know that DJ Bruce AKA
Bruce Parker of the weekly Indulgence party has been DJing for
25 years and hails from the Bronx (where DJing got started.) This
cat has been around. He's been with Indulgence since the beginning,
six magical years ago and is also resident at Spa Fridays and
Ten15. There ya go now remember to look fancy it’s the 6
year anniversary and all.
Event:
B.E.D
Venue: The Cellar
DJ's: Big Daddy, BlaQuest, Phiness
Music: hip hop, R&B, soul
Cover: $5
When my friend Jones says he’s going to “Club Bed”
it means he’s not going out. (You have to know someone to
get on the list there). Now the jokes on him because next time
he says that line I’m dragging him to Beats, Eats and Dancing
(B.E.D.) to hear hip-hop, R&B and classics at the Cellar.
The Eats are provided by Papalote Mexican Grill, the dancing is
all you. Now we can all go to B.E.D. together!
Event:
Qool
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Spesh, Gil, Hyper D, Scott
Carelli, Mark Musselman
Music: progressive house
Cover: $5
I have to admit, you will catch some of the Nitevibe crew frequenting
this happy-hour. Me? I can’t get out of the house until
like 11pm on most days. You may, however see Rebecca or Carla
dancing and schmooze with the electronic glitterati and industry
folk... yea one big happy family.

Meow
Venue: Decibel
DJ's: DJ's I-Cue, Lando 1, Mixtek,

Music: hip-hop, soul
Cover: $TBA
Meow has been bringing some of SF's greatest DJ's to the floor
for nearly two years now. Need some reggae to roll you into Friday
gently? Hip-hop? Neo Soul? No problem, they've got it all! Just
don't show up in those Sergio Valente jeans no matter how good
your ass looks - Meow has a strict dress code for only the fanciest

Kitchen
Venue: Club Six
DJ's: Mike Nice, Derrik D, Dusty
Crates
Music: hip-hop, dancehall
Cover: $5
This party would make KRS proud. All hip-hop elements are represented.
You got kids free styling and beat boxing outside, b-boys &
girls dancing, the DJs come correct with old school and new shit
and the graffiti is hanging on the wall. But there is that one
other element that KRS forgot and soul kitchen provides…chicken
wings, BBQ. For free… Holla!
Event:
Passenger
Venue: Skylark
DJ's: Paul Craven, Capital A, Kazu,
Takeshi, Miss Leigh
Music: downtempo, jazzy house, world-breaks
Cover: Free
This long running night by “On the One’s” Paul
Craven received the honor of the best night under $5 in the SF
Weekly. It’s all true. The vibe is great and the music is
the new world flavored percussive house music that will not allow
you to just sit there and drink. I’ve tried it to no avail.
At one point your ass just starts moving whether your head likes
it or not.

Venue: Ten15
DJ's: Stacey Pullen, Taj, Grisha,
Rooz, Rouzbeh, Mystre, Dyloot, Tom Slik, Discotique, Rafael
Music: deep house, tech-house
Cover: $20
Go here, check this. Stacey Pullen from Detroit came up under
the influence of techno originators like Derrick May and Juan
Atkins. He got his start with the help of Derrick May around 1990
and is considered one of the techno- Mecca’s leading contemporary
artists. Stacey started out releasing some of the first tribal
tech-house sounds under the name, “Bango”. Later he
was known as the “Kosmik Messenger”, “X-Stacey”
and more recently “Silent Phase.” Stacey fuses the
more melodic house and garage sound with a traditional techno
style. In addition to his own releases he has also been featured
as part of the esteemed DJ Kicks series on label, K7.
Event:

Music: funky house

Elements presents Heroine
Venue: Sno-Drift
DJ's: Ellen Ferrato, Scarlett Etienne,
DJ ELZ, Tina, Pam the Funktress, Daniela
Music: house, soul
Cover: $15
Mixed Elements presents their third installment of Heroine. This
all female DJ lineup includes some of SF’s best DJs -an
extremely cool idea considering our male-dominated industry. These
ladies tear it up just as good as any dumb boy playing house to
hip-hop and soul. So there!
Event:
Traffic:
The Stoplight Theme Party
Venue: Hotel Ibiza
DJ's: Kevin Wong, Richierich, Andrew
B, John Jow, Jaxx the Ripper
Music: trance, progressive house,
hip-hop
Cover: $20 door, $10 presale
Theme parties are my favorite. Check this out. The “Stoplight”
theme means you wear the color according to the amount you want
to be harassed by the opposite sex. Red means, “fuck off.
(I’m chilling with my friends)”, Yellow means, “
It depends what kind of car you drive (or `proceed with caution)
and Green means “Hell yeah! I came to get down. (or Go!)
”Ladies in green skip to the front of the line. (Big surprise).
The music ranges from trance to hip-hop - never really understood
that combo but whatever. This event is brought to you by The Drink
Club, Element and Beyond Ent.
Event:
Oxygen
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Franky Boissy, Julius Papp
Music: deep house
Cover: $10
The first Friday of every month is Oxygen by Metrojazz. DJs Julius
Papp and Franky Boissy always do a nice job easing you out of
the work mindset and into a sexy Friday night on the town. Look
at artwork while dancing to deep house and get inside your date’s
head. What is the artist really saying by placing that green square
in the middle of the canvas?
Event:
PoP
Venue: An Sibin
DJ's: Broker/Dealer and guests
Music: minimal techno, experimental
Cover: $3
Hear some bleeps and pops and other sounds that remind you of
that Bjork movie “Dancer in The Dark” (minus the depressing
storyline.) Remember that scene when she is dancing around the
factory with all the machine sounds? It’s sort of like that.
Yeah, it’s not your typical go-go disco house vibe, but
it’s also where all the cool kids hang out - you know the
one’s with the asymmetrical haircuts?

Music: garage, soulful house, hip-hop,
R&B
Cover: $TBA
The Underground has a new beginning according
to the Ruben Mancias and David Harness. The two have teamed up
to bring you Body Music. The last party they did together, Anthem
was off the chains and again this party will be a testament to
their love for sharing music, bringing people together and getting
drunk. Just kidding about the last part but you get the picture.
They are trying to rock it old-school underground style. This
is the opening night.
Event:
Midsummer
Mardi Gras
Venue: Hotel Ibiza
DJ's: Todd Prophet, Marz Faram, Les
Carter, Sean Pastor, Omi-San
Music: house, progressive
Cover: $20, $10 w/ flyer
A midsummer Mardi Gras is going off at Ibiza so break out the
beads, masks and feathers. Unlike some events, this party does
not present itself like the whole goal is to see girls’
boobs but I’m not going to say it won’t happen. After
all, it is the spot with a twenty-person hot tub and it’s
Mardi Gras. Expect a fusion of progressive house and New Orleans
jazz. (That would be cool, though. Don’t you think?)
Event:
Red
Melon
Venue: DNA
DJ's: Uriel & Alexis, Dano, JZ
Music: house
Cover: $15 2 for 1 b4 11pm
The Melon Party
is on a new night so don’t plex. It’s still the same
great house music with same great vibe you know from their monthly
and their boat party, Watermelon. This month is special guests
Uriel & Alexis of Bounce in Mexico City. SF-Vibe is upstairs
with Norman Stradley and Andy Flack. Rockin’ into afterhours-
TWITA!
Event:
Kinkyfunk
Venue: Club Six
DJ's: David Coleman, Sen Sei, Paul
Guido, Seamie
Music: progressive house
Cover: $10
Always a good night at the bar, jokes one of the bartenders. This
party by Electrocelt gets a heavy Irish crowd who seriously likes
to party like rockstars dancing until the very last progressive
house note is played. Guests in the past have included international
heads like Taylor, Sean Cusick and local leaders of the new school
like this week’s Seamie, David Coleman and Sen Sei. (FYI.
This party is usually the first Friday)
Event:
Kojak
Venue: Hush Hush
DJ's: Vinnie Esparza, Cool Chris
Music: hip-hop, funk, rare groove
Cover: TBA
Kojak is a badass man with great taste in music. Vinnie Esparza
and Cool Chris accompany him at Hush Hush flexing their musical
muscle and knowledge. Take a lesson from these funkologists and
see how all your favorite hip-hop, funk, breaks and rare grooves
tie together on the Kojak family tree.
Event:

Venue: Movida
DJ's: Lombardi, Phil Sherburne
Music: electro, brokenbeat

Charlie don’t surf and Lombardi and Phil don’t do
house. They are revolting against those cheerful vocals, four-four
beats and disco inspired melodies. I could use a break from it
myself. Bob your head to some brokenbeat, electro funk and whatever
the hell else they feel like playing at this mellow skater-friendly
sangria loving bar o’ bull.

Bionic
Venue: The Top
DJ's: Solar, Iz
Music: breaks, hip-hop, classics
Cover: Free
This tradition at the top started as an 80's night by some of
the best house DJ's in town. It's mostly house now with some deep
disco and electro thrown in for good measure. The DJs have as
much fun as the crowd, which seems to be appreciated by the packed
local crowd who return there religiously on Sunday evening. It’s
also cool because you never know what International star DJ will
drop by for a surprise set. Iz and Solar just got it like that.

Venue: Dalva
DJ's: Anna, Phil Sherburne
Music: NRG, house
Cover: $15/$10 members
I can’t help but hear the theme from “COPS”
when I heard about this new party. Apparently this is "where
the rough come to tumble” and it goes down every Sunday
with your resident selectors DJ Anna from (Future Primitive Sound
Session, Beta Lounge) and Philip Sherburne (Trouble, Charlie Don’t
Surf) and a rotating cast of sketchy characters, thugs and recent
parolees playing the music that your mom warned you about. Are
you brave enough to take sides in the cop/pimp turf war?
