Burning Man 2009
The gates are open and the playa is coming to life! It's not too late to get your rear in gear to join the yearly exodus from San Francisco to the remote Nevada desert known once a year as Black Rock City. For many, Burning Man is at the pinnacle of cultural evolution. It is a place like no other with a level of artistic freedom and radical self-expression hard to find anywhere else in the world. Despite the recession, we are still so lucky to have more than enough to survive, so much in fact that we can take off for one week and experience the blissful gift economy of BRC. Whether or not Burning Man will have a lasting impact on the evolution of human culture remains unknown, but it is certain that those who make the journey to the playa are changed forever. San Francisco crews like Opulent Temple, Green Gorilla, and Pink Mammoth are are there ready to throw some rockin' parties that'll keep your dusty feet dancing through the hot days and cold nights. Sharam of Deep Dish, who is making his first ever trip to the playa, will headline OT's Wednesday White Party, with Armin Van Buuren playing Thursday and Carl Cox on Friday. Date: now--Mon 9/7, Time: all day/night, Place: Black Rock City, Nevada, Cover: $300+, More Info (EB)

Brazilian Independence Day
For ages Brazil has represented the great escape into a prehistoric, tropical heaven, igniting the Western imagination like no other South American country. Brazil's independence from Portugal in 1822 freed them from a reigning monarch and created a great cause for celebration among a people who celebrate like no other! This Sunday a multitude of live musicians, DJs, and dancers will gather to recognize a vivacious and fascinating culture in the picturesque landscape of the Hall of Flowers. Date: Sun 9/6, Time: door at 12pm, Place: Hall of Flowers, Golden Gate Park (near 9th & Lincoln), Cover: $tba, More Info (CG)

SF Mime Troupe in Dolores Park
Wait-- they're not mimes? It's true, our own SF Mime Troupe is in fact, not mimes at all in the tradional sense, but mimes in the ancient sense: to mimic. Their theater is the theater of satire, seeking to make you laugh at the absurtities of contemporary life and at the same time, see their causes. With a strong history in the Bay Area (they've been a collective since 1970), they have toured the US and Europe, and have won a special Tony Award for Excellence in Regional Theater. This weekend, they perform their latest recession-proof satire "Too Big to Fail"--a story of banking bureaucracy and international finance, how the greed got started, and how we turn it off. Date: Sat 9/5-Mon 9/7, Time: 2pm (music 1:30pm), Place: Dolores Park, Cover: no cover, More Info (JE)
