Burning Man: Evolution
The Man is built, the Temple is coming along, and an entire city is being constructed out of nothing as tens of thousands of burners eagerly prepare to make their yearly pilgrimage next week. For many, Burning Man is at the pinnacle of cultural evolution. It is a place like no other with a level of artistic freedom and radical self-expression hard to find anywhere else in the world. Despite the recession, we are still so lucky to have more than enough to survive, so much in fact that we can take off for one week and experience the blissful gift economy of Black Rock City. Whether or not Burning Man will have a lasting impact on the evolution of human culture remains unknown, but it is certain that those who make the journey to the playa are changed forever. San Francisco crews like Opulent Temple, Green Gorilla, and Pink Mammoth are gearing up to throw some rockin' parties that'll keep your dusty feet dancing through the hot days and cold nights. Sharam of Deep Dish, who is making his first ever trip to the playa, will headline OT's Wednesday White Party, with Armin Van Buuren playing Thursday and Carl Cox on Friday. Date: Mon 8/31--Mon 9/7, Time: gate opens 12:01am on 8/31, Place: Black Rock City, Nevada, Cover: $300+, More Info (EB)

Bayonics in Union Square
Winners of SF Weekly's Music Award for Best International Band, Bayonics represent the multicultural musical styles of the Bay Area, incorporating salsa, hip-hop, funk, jazz, rock and soul into a 9-piece ensemble built on the foundation of a traditional salsa orchestra and funk big band. Described as the "hip-hop generation's answer to the Latin fusion of the 70's," their unique edgy sound comes from the combination of funky beats with intricate horn lines, stylish guitar riffs, thumping bass lines, and melodic rap vocals. And lucky us, they're performing free under in the sunshine as part of the Jewels in the Square performance series! Date: Sun 8/30, Time: 2-4pm, Place: Union Square Park, Cover: no cover, More Info (JE)

Sketch Tuesdays
Each month 111 Minna gallery hosts an evening of live art making featuring both established and emerging Bay Area artists. This event offers patrons the opportunity to see local artists at work and get acquainted with them. It is also a way for artists to meet each other and to be inspired by each other's creative processes. Sketch Tuesdays is a place to congregate, to talk, to create and to be seen. There is usually room for artists to just drop in and start drawing, but the good seats are reserved for the invited artists. Date: Tue 8/25, Time: 6-10pm, Place: 111 Minna Gallery, Cover: no cover, More Info (WF)
