The R.A.V.E. Act. Get a Load of This!!! Clubs out of business due to hefty fines, no one throwing parties for fear of jail time, DJing is illegal, dancing outlawed. Is this a possible future for the dance music community? If the U.S. government had it there way, yes!

Every now and then you here about some crap going on in the Senate that’s going to fuck up our beloved scene and make it more difficult to enjoy our electronic music culture. This time it’s out of control - the new proposed R.A.V.E. Act could seriously change the industry as we know it. Known as the Reducing Americans Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act (R.A.V.E.), this new bill will hold venue owners and promoters responsible for patrons using ecstasy at their events. Club owners will face fines of up to $500,000.00 or 20 years in prison if authorities deem that their events encourage the use of drugs or sponsor a rave-like environment. Read it! You'll find that basically anyone that’s ever so much as held a glow stick (yes, they actually mention glow sticks!) is a target. We are encouraging everyone in S.F.’s nightlife community to oppose the R.A.V.E Act. What can YOU do? For more info, read the Washington Post Article / Sign The Online Petition / Fax Your Senators Today

Write or call your respective Senators and House Representatives and make it clear that you want them to vote against the RAVE Act in the Senate, and the CLEAN-UP Act in the House. Monday's Pix

Event: Tranquility Bass
Venue: 26 Mix
DJ's: Jonah Sharpe, Nick Philip
Music: ambient, lounge, downtempo
Cover: Free
For those who don’t get off on jumping out of airplanes or mountain biking, perhaps you too can excel at an “extreme” activity. Tranquility Base asks that you do some extreme chilling, extreme drinking and extreme fucking- off because it’s Monday and you worked hard today! (or um…you lay on your couch watching Judge Judy re-runs, either way you deserve it!) Jonah Sharpe guest-stars, so make sure you do some extreme listening.

Event: Bourbon and Blue Jeans
Venue: The Arrow Bar
DJ's: Ashley, Meagan
Music: rock, R&B, lounge
Cover: Free
Well if this party doesn’t sound like a bad 80’s film starring Patrick Swayze I don’t know what does. The themes here are denim, drinking, and getting laid. OK so I made up the getting laid part, but we should keep that rumor going. I kind of want to meet me a boy with a tractor graphic on his hat and some Leonard Skyynard albums.

Tuesday's Pix
[ Mon | Tue | Wed | Thur | Fri | Sat | Sun ] [ View All ]

Event: Tuesdays
Venue: 2202 Oxygen Bar
DJ's: Dr. Friendly, Naturfrends
Music: ambient electro
Cover: Free
Some people drink beer like its oxygen, but the real trend setters are the ones who drink oxygen like it’s beer. At the oxygen bar you can not only drink O2 infused cocktails (non alcoholic) but you can also put it up your nose (which is way better than the other things you put up there) I have to tell you, I tried sucking up the O2 for 5 minutes and it didn’t make me feel much different. Twenty minutes though is supposed to do the trick - whatever that may be. Is O2 the new O’Doul’s?

Event: Spooky, Ming & FS
Venue: Justice League
DJ's: Spooky, Ming & FS, Baldwin Bros., Dalek
Music: experimental downtempo, drum n’ bass, hip-hop
Cover: $15
Rewind! This was in last weeks pix by accident. It should be this week’s. Sorry bout’ that. Here it is one more time: You like that genre I just made up? – “experimental downtempo.” The syllables “mental” are important here. His style is also called “illbient”. Spooky from NYC is one of those crazy production geniuses that keep your mind blown. Ming & FS also from NYC play everything from drum n’ bass to hip-hop and breaks to satisfy your dance floor cravings. I have gone to see all these artists and they truly impress.

Event: Local Heroes Present Taco Tuesdays
Venue: Border Cantina
DJ's: Resident DJ's M3, Anthony Garlic, DJ Chuluda + special guests
Music: hip-hop, electro, club classics
Cover: Free
Tacos with fresh beats. I’m not talking about the new special at Herbivore, I’m talking about DJ M3 and crew playing funky house beats from 7-10pm every Tuesday at a Mexican joint. What the heck else do you need? How about $2 tacos, taquitos, $2 domestics, $3 imports and $4 margaritas? Isn’t that a deal? You learn something knew every damn day. By the way, the Spanish vocab phrase of the week is “cabeza grande”. That means “big head” en Espanol. I learned that in San Diego this weekend while discussing some skateboarder’s pit bull. (Though the phrase could have easily referred to the skateboarder too.)

Event: Dharma Sessions
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: Foxxee, Franky Boissy, Didje Kelli
Music: 2-step, downtempo, funky house
Cover: $TBA
It’s still “a spiritual thing.” It’s just that the popular weekly thrown by Martel, Nabiel & Dennise has simply changed it’s name. Will there still be the great music you love? Yes, but new and improved with some 2-step! Will there still be tarot card readers and henna artists? Oh you know it. Might there even be ladies dancing on the tables? Fo’ sho’! What about cool visual projections from Visual Attack you may ask? Oh yeah. Can I get a witness?! Get your ass here and testify to all the music and culture for yourself.

Event: Balance
Venue: Blind Tiger
DJ's: Danosan
Music: deep house
Cover: $5
Confidence is an important tool for success. The flyer for this brand new weekly makes two interesting claims. The first is, “without balance there is only chaos.” That seems like a fare assumption in a scientific context. The other claim they make is, “it’s sure to become a Wednesday night tradition.” We will have to wait and see about that one but I’m all for it. This crew will play anything from deep to funky to tribal to progressive house and that sounds like a nice balanced evening.

Event: Dream
Venue: Cloud 9
DJ's: Jeno, Paul Hemming
Music: house
Cover: $TBA
Jeno, Jeno, Jeno! Everything tastes better with Jeno! Now you can hear that very popular house DJ every week as he joins the Zen City Records crew as a new resident for this party. No, I’m serious! This is not one of those you won a timeshare scams or even a “You are in the final round of the publisher’s clearing house sweepstakes!” You really can hear fantastic house music at Cloud 9 midweek.

Event: Kit Kat
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Jonene, Jellybear
Music: house
Cover: $12, free b4 11pm
“I’ll see you at the gym,” says my friend KD in a head to toe lime-green spandex jumpsuit. She actually means the Endup where she frequently works out with other freak-a-holics on a packed dance floor at Kit Kat every Thursday. Does your current work-out facility have Jonene guest DJing or Miguel Migs as a rotating resident? I didn’t think so. Hear incredible house music until 4am but if you’re not paying attention you could easily end up partying somewhere until 8am. It happens.

Event: nu W
Venue: The W Hotel
DJ's: Danman, Donovan, Greg Eversoul
Music: nu-soul, hip-hop, R&B
Cover: $10
Finally somewhere fly to go early on Thursday. The happy hour is from 7pm-9pm featuring some downtempo mood music. If you have a crush on a boy at work and you just need to get him in the right sexy disco style environment to make your move, this is the place. It starts at 7pm so you can gather people for that after work drink. It gets deeper on the dance tip around 9pm.

Event: The Hizzy
Venue: Hush Hush
DJ's: Derrek B, Lady Base, Satva, Miss Leema
Music: electro, funk, soul, hip-hop
Cover: $3
A very mixed crowd of young scenesters get together at the hizzy even though they all claim they stopped listening to hip-hop two years ago in exchange for The White Stripes. Whatever, get the funk out. The Hizzy isn’t just hip-hop anyway, more like "abstract-hiphop-future-electro-soul.".

Event: Joypad’s 1 Year Anniversary
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Thunderball, Jason Bentley, DJ W, Chris Haycock
Music: downtempo, lounge
Cover: $8, presale, $10 door

Joypad is always bringing out the artists that you never heard of but soon will. I love them for that. Happy Anniversary! Keep being really really cool because someone has to do it besides me. Ha! Just joking. Thunderball is on 18th Street Louge the label created by Thievery Corporation from DC and share a similar almost cinematic lounge feel. Jason Bentley up from L.A. with the bossanova style.

Event: Sonic Presents DJ Cass
Venue: Ten-15
DJ's: DJ Cass, Slide, Jerry Bonham, Michael Anthony, Richard Summerhays, DJ Melanie, Armann the Brainchild, Jaysen Vasques, Andrew D, Discotique, and Rafael
Music: deep house, progressive, trance
Cover: $10 Presale, Buy Tickets
This week at their new weekly party, Spundae resident Dj Cass of the famous Cass and Slide (UK) raises the decks in honor of his new mix, “Spundae Interpretation.” Cass has pulled some of his favorites from his old bag o’ tricks to compile this new collection of deep, dark progressive house and trance tracks. Cass Cutbush offers up this new blitz of beats stating that “this mix is full of records that I love.” It’s a powerful moment for this producer turned dj who is known for luscious tracks featured all over the progressive/trance world.

Event: Love Support
Venue: Sno-Drift
DJ's: Andy Caldwell, Mei-Lwun Yee, Stevieb, Seven
Music: jazzy house, downtempoo, hip-hop
Cover: TBA

The Soulstice crew and host Gina Rene are doing this groovy monthly that seems to be making everyone all adrift with love and peace and happiness or maybe the crowd is all on ecstasy. --either way it’s a nice party. I think I heard a rumor about Soulstice doing a little hip-hop set after 2am so stick around. If you show up late for that set its only $5 with the flyer.

Event: Mohogany Boutique
Venue: 330 Rich
DJ's: Rich Medina, DJ Design, JBoogie, Zeph
Music: hip-hop, funk, soul, breaks
Cover: $15, $10 b4 11pm
This one-off at 330 Rich is so cool because it doesn’t even know how cool it is. Who’s idea was this? I’m guessing it was the DJs themselves. There is not a ton of promotion for it and there’s something about the combination of these beat freaks that makes me think they planned the session themselves so they can vibe off each other’s genius. When you get to the extreme musical knowledge that these guys possess you probably have to throw your own parties so you’re not bored listening to the guy going on before you.

Event: TRIP
Venue: DNA
DJ's: Neuromotor, Adam Ohana, Uphonic, Dutch, Lounge:Masonic, Kenni
Music: psy/goa trance
Cover: $20
If you’re going to do the trance thing, the Thump Radio kids are the most reliable resource. They broadcast their sound on 3 radio stations around the Bay Area and they know what artists do the best string art. What is string art exactly? I’m not sure but it will be at this event and I bet it will glow in the dark. Look for Andre, the artist. Body massage work provided by Amy.

Event: Vivid
Venue: Wish
DJ's: Seven, Sol, Anthony Garlic
Music: midtempo funky house
Cover: Free
The bi-monthly party, Vivid is trying to give you a very special gift of midtempo funk and house just for you to dance your little ass off to all night with no cover. The drink specials are flowing all night so you can buy a drink for the cutie you are peeping at the opposite end of the bar. Do people really do that still or is that just in 80’s movies? Anthony Garlic from the Green Gorilla Lounge guest-stars on this episode of the Loveboat.

Event: Orgy
Venue: 550 Barneveld
DJ's: The Warp Brothers (UK), Armann the Brainchild, Gianni, BB Hayes, Andrew D, Louis Osbourne (UK), David Garcia, Ron Reeser, Joey Mazzola, Vin roc, Reckless Ryan+
Music: tech house, trance, club classics, hip-hop
Cover: $TBA
Another party, another “Girls Gone Wild” episode here at the monthly Orgy event. This installment of high-class entertainment includes a teeny-weeny bikini celebration. Beachwear is acceptable too. That’s good because sometimes I can’t tell the difference between my thong bathing suit and my hair ties so I’ll just opt for wearing my old “JAMS” instead. Anyway, The Warp Brothers from the UK are famous for tracks like “Phat Bass” and “I will Survive.” Another UK headliner is Louis Osbourne, son of you know who!

Event: Candi
Venue: Hotel Ibiza
DJ's: RTigger, Rick Lee, Soulfire, Tim Brown, reverand, Romeo, Brian V, Juice, Lash
Music: tech house, trance, club classics, hip-hop
Cover: $10 Presale, $20 door
The monthly Candi party at Ibiza apparently went off last month and they are expecting a larger turnout this time. Hear everything from house to hip-hop as you swim in the heated pool or get your relaxation on in the 20 person hot tub. There’s also an oxygen bar (which is probably really cool when you’re high already). Candi wants you to “experience the sweetness of life,” yeah I get it, clever.

Event: House Saturdays
Venue: Kate O Brien’s
DJ's: Craig Kuna, Rob Grega
Music: deep house
Cover: $3
A certain well known SF house DJ that shall remain nameless was very excited about this. Kate O Brien’s, his favorite venue is back on the scene with a new Saturday night! It may just be a big Irish bar to you but for some reason the parties at Kate’s end up successful. Perhaps this one will have the same fate. Pittsburgh expats, Craig Kuna and Rob Grega have been at it for 10 years. Guess they outgrew Pittsburgh – that or their running from the law. Either way they're here.

Event: Cloud 9 a Go-Go
Venue: Cloud 9
DJ's: Frenchy le Freak, Kirk, Soloman
Music: 60’s soul, go-go house, hip-hop
Cover: TBA

Get ready for some truly shagadelic marketing business that actually sounds fun despite the corporate hand. It’s a party to celebrate the new Austin Powers movie, Goldmember. Party is complete with Lava Lamps, astral projections, heavy pink shag in “Austin’s Love Lair”, horrible machines in Dr. Evils Lab and all of the guests dressed to suit the scene, baby. Giveaways for best dressed include movie passes, limited edition posters, lava lamps, cocktails and more. I’m kind of down for the music. It’s not often you go to Cloud 9 and hear 60’s soul and quirky house.

Event: ROMP [ Site ]
Venue: Buzz 9
DJ's: Jason Burns, KENichi, Jason Knight, Spivak, Scott Carrelli
Music: progressive house
Cover: $5
Anyone up for a game of tag? The creators of Octane and Flux join together for ROMP, a new monthly at Buzz 9! These two groups have often supported each other in their individual events, but are now coming together collectively for this new progressive party. Dj’s Jason Burns (OnIce) and KENichi (OnIce) face-off with friends and co-frolickers Jason Knight (SDR) and Spivak (SDR) for a night of dark and delicious mayhem. To spice it up they’ve brought into the mix special guest Dj Scott Carrelli (Qool). This is some roughhousing, pigtail-pulling kind of fun—just no punching below the belt okay!

Event: Funktion
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Andy Caldwell, Michael Anthony, N8 Castro, Samo, Rob zemo, Dfunkt
Music: jazzy house
Cover: $15, $10 b4 midnight
I love when I learn new and interesting things about a DJ. Did you know that Andy Caldwell of Soulstice fame, grew up playing the trumpet and the marimba in Mexico? He started DJing around 18 and became recognized producing tracks for electronic band, Soulstice. He has released solo music on both OM and Panhandle Records too. Just back from his European Naked Music tour, Andy should be ready to rock out in good old SF again.

Event: Adena
Venue: Jelly’s

Adena must be a mystical trance Goddess that lives in a parallel universe where the ocean is over your head and when you touch it, it lights up. Hey, don’t look at me. I’m just telling you exactly what I see on the flyer. Rave until afterhours at Jelly’s, Pier 50 and hear music from the Thump, Mixed Elements, Looq and Sitara crews. Look at this, we’re on a roll today with the trance listings!
