This is your Brain... on Fire!
The fabulous Flaming Lotus Girls' latest art creation, Soma, will be on display in this sneak preview/party. Soma is a fantastical sculpture that translates the anatomy of neurons into metal, fire, and light; magnifying the microscopic world to an epic scale. This event is a great opportunity to see it up close before its virgin installation on the playa, while also enjoying delicious food and drink (cash bar and BBQ), live bands, DJs, and a tour of The Boxshop itself, where the FLG's and many other Bay Area artists create their cutting edge work. Come see this molecular structure on a monumental scale, and let the Flaming Lotus Girls stimulate all five of your senses, as only they can! Date: Sat 8/1, Time: 5pm-midnight, Place: The Boxshop (951 Hudson Ave), Cover: no cover, link More Info (JE)

Burning Man Sustainability
Let's face it, Burning Man is not exactly at the top of the list of "green" events. With the vats of propane responsible for putting the "burn" in the man, not to mention the gasoline used to drive there, on top of all the waste from food, costumes, and packaging, the impact on the enironment is major. If you want to learn how to better green your burn and beyond, come to this night of celebration and networking while enjoying enviro-art and music from DJs Syd Gris, Laird, Hey Man!, and Jason Knight. Various organizations with be present to share insights and provide resources, and a panel of experts will discuss Burning Man and sustainability to help you explore and learn how you can green your burn, leave no trace, create community impact, and bring it home and take it into the wider world. Date: Wed 7/29, Time: 6:30-11pm, Place: Temple, Cover: $10-20, link More Info (JE)

Prepare for the Playa
Burning Man is only a month away and just like good boy scouts, burners should always be prepared. In order to have a great burn you have to be ready to survive the harsh physical environment and flourish in the radical mental playground. At the Prepare for the Playa series, which is only in its second year, excited and overwhelmed first-timers will greatly benefit from Playa-U clinics, fashion shows, and checking out necessary accoutrements and stylish costumes from burner-preneurs. This event is also perfect for the seasoned burner to discover new gadgets, tricks, fashions, and playa-paraphernalia to complete their burner gear and further enhance the experience. If you're not going to Burning Man this year, at least you can come and party! Date: Sat 8/1, Time: 12-8pm, Place: Sports Basement (1590 Bryant), Cover: no cover, link More Info (EB)

Puppet Folk Revival
Described in their press release as "an unholy blend of the puppetcraft of The Muppets performing a morphed version of faded and jaded rock survivors like Metallica and Spinal Tap--all sprinkled with the very blue banter of Red Orbach, an English-speaking Israeli version of South Park's Cartman," Israeli cult sensation The Puppet Folk Revival makes their American debut tonight as part of the SF Jewish Film Festival with a live musical performance and clip show from their mockumentary "Red Band." The life-sized puppets are three washed-up bandmates all rounded up by Red Orbach in an attempt to stage a comeback--or, put in Red's own words, it's "kick-ass fuckin rock 'n' roll!" If you hadn't already guessed, this one isn't for the kiddies. Date: Fri 7/31, Time: 9:30pm, Place: Cellspace, link More Info (JE)
