Louder Than Words, Wider Than Pictures
The Hip-Hop Film and Music Festival commences this Tuesday at the Justice League with a screening of the film “Breath Control: The History of the Human Beatbox. The evening also includes live musical performances by Aceyalone, Medusa, Sunspot Jones (Mystic Journeymen), JBoogie and more. The closing film by Joey Garfield is a documentary about Beatbox or the art of making beats using only the human voice. Beatboxing was made popular by legends like Doug E. Fresh, Biz Markie, The Fat Boys, Rahzel and Scratch and is often regarded as the fifth element of hip-hop (along with graffiti, breakdancing, MCing and DJing.) Some believe beatboxing has been overlooked and has not been given the same acknowledgement from the community as the other four elements. Garfield’s film explores the subject in depth by using interviews, live performances, archival footage and animation to highlight this important aspect of hip-hop identity. Date: Tuesday 7/16, Time: 8pm, Place: Justice League, 628 Divisadero, Admission: $15, More Info

Event: Halflife
Venue: An Sibin
DJ's: M, Kryptyk, Aneurysm
Music: drum n’ bass, breaks
Cover: Free
Does anyone really know how to pronounce the name of this bar? There is some odd Gaelic thing happening here. This traditional Irish bar plays host to the Halflife drum n’ bass party for the past year. An odd combo? Well An Sibin means “illegal drinking place” and you know how those renegade drum n’ bass brats are.

Event: Marinated Mondays
Venue: Sacrifice
DJ's: EO, Haze
Music: downtempo, lounge
Cover: $2
Marinade yourself in a combination of Vodka, Triple sec, limejuice and and mellow downbeat tunes. The recipe above (minus the beats) is a kamikaze and their $3 for you at this Monday night mixer. Play pool, dance, lounge around in the jungle-like décor or just get drunk on cheap drinks.

Tuesday's Pix

Event: Spooky, Ming & FS
Venue: Justice League
DJ's: Spooky, Ming & FS, Baldwin Bros., Dalek
Music: experimental downtempo, drum n’ bass, hip-hop
Cover: $15
You like that genre I just made up? – “experimental downtempo.” The syllables “mental” are important here. His style is also called “illbient”. Spooky from NYC is one of those crazy production geniuses that keep your mind blown. Ming & FS also from the East play everything from drum n’ bass to hip-hop and breaks to satisfy your dance floor cravings. I have seen all these impressive artists, this show is highly recommended.

Event: Phuturo
Venue: The Top
DJ's: Tomas, Jason Mouse
Music: drum n’ bass, breaks
Cover: $5
“Such a scene” my roommate says coming home drunk from the Top every Tuesday. He always has some interesting tale to tell. I might start calling them “Colin’s Phuturo Adventures”. Doesn’t that sound like a great science fiction movie? You can hear science fiction “future breaks” and other drum n’ bass flavors at this popular weekly.

Event: Underground Communication
Venue: Dalva
DJ's: Vinnie Esparza, Jonny Deeper
Music: funky downtempo, rare groove
Cover: Free
This guy Vinnie Esparza cracks me up. He sends out this newsletter about all his gigs (which are many including Hella Tight, Soulful Strut and Kojak) and he was talking about the crazy questions he gets behind the DJ booth. People have asked him to throw on their mixtape, someone came up to the turntables and asked him “where’s the radio back there?” and then someone asked if he has any old-school! Everyone knows Vinnie is the old school king so that was the silliest question of all.

Wednesday's Pix
[ Mon | Tue | Wed | Thur | Fri | Sat | Sun ] [ View All ]

Event: Acid Wash
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Steve Masters, Rafael, Ben Doren, Brian Raffi
Music: house classics
Cover: $5
What about those garage classics that started it all? Every Wednesday Steve Masters, Rafael, Ben Doren, Brian Raffi play house classics, and some fun 80’s stuff that will have you high fiving your friend and yelling “oh shit! Remember this?!” If you want to wear stonewash jeans with hot pink stilettos no one will mind.

Event: Sexxx Jams
Venue: Pow
DJ's: Jodeci and friends
Music: Miami Bass, ghetto tech,
Cover: TBA
Hear some nasty sex traxxx at Sexxx Jams. I’m talking tracks where the words “ass and titties” may be the only words. This 2 Live Crew style jam will probably not feature ladies wearing thongs in cold SF but I was thinking… maybe we could wear thongs over our normal clothes. You know, just to keep in the spirit of this humorous night.

Event: Dub Shack
Venue: The Attik
DJ's: Tomas
Music: rocksteady, dub, reggae
Cover: Free
Somewhere in a far away land called the Mission lives an eccentric little bar with all kinds of freaky stuff hanging from the ceiling. It looks like your parent’s attic. Artifacts like accordions, flying pigs, lawn statues and guns… (Oops, maybe that’s just my parent’s attic). Anyway, this Wednesday is dubshack where you get to hear old lover’s rock and reggae 45’s and of course some quality dub. The selectah this week is Tomas.

Event: The Real Deal
Venue: Storyville
DJ's: Spaztik Emcee, Design, Denizen, Cool Chris
Music: hip-hop, turntablism
Cover: $10
The bomb records crew are not playin’ around with your disposable hip-hop Missy Elliot and Nelly listening ass. This is the Real Deal, an underground thang. Featured this week is Spaztik Emcee with a live band. Keep an eye out for this new weekly, they have Grand Wizzard Theodore coming through in August! Old school? Um yeah, he invented scratching.

Event: Collective
Venue: The Cellar
DJ's: Jerry Ross, Daymitreeus, Daniela
Music: nu-soul, hip-hop, R&B
Cover: $10
From the crew who brings you L’Originale at the Rosewood, this is not your typical Thursday. Yes, you will get your grove on with some smooth neo-soul but how about spoken word, films and dancing? It’s all that and a bag of cultural chips, free b4 10pm.

Event: Fearless Vampire Killers 3
Venue: The Top
DJ's: Romanowski, Tomas
Music: soul, rocksteady, reggae, ska
Cover: TBA
Every year Tomas and Romanowski bring wooden stakes and a whole lot of 45’s over to some hot spot venue in a massive scheme to kill vampires. In the process everyone seriously gets their groove on to some soul and reggae. Please do not wear garlic around your neck though.

Event: Playland
Venue: Julip
DJ's: Tom Thump, Kelly
Music: downtempo
Cover: Free
This super groovy bar looks like an outdoor park complete with trees and benches but it’s warm and indoors and there’s no grass or swings or sandbox. However! on Thursdays Tom and Kelly call this park “Playland” where they spin downtempo-ish style jazzy midtempo broken beat styley nu-funk. FYI: I think the curse on Julip has been lifted. Ever since the magical DJ Kelly started spinning there, people have been going to Julip on a normal basis.

Event: Sonic Presents Electric Skychurch [ Site ]
Venue: Ten15
DJ's: Electric Skychurch, Gianni, Jonathan Ojeda +
Music: progressive house
Cover: $10 Presale Buy Tickets

In the main room is Electric Skychurch, an important part of electronic musical history. Started in 1989 by James Lumb, the performance today still pushes boundaries by blurring the line between music and visuals. The act now consists of film art, several musicians and DJs. Not to miss. Five Star Funk is upstairs with Madame Mercury, Spinner, Double Day, Greg J and more. In the basement is Ellen Ferrato, Joey Mazzola, Chris &Chris. Then you got the front “Discoteque” with Rafael. Basicly it’s like those mini cereal box variety packs. Whether you like the snap, crackle and pop of breaks, the honey goodness of cheerio house or a heartier frosted wheat progressive sound, there’s something here for you tonight.

Event: Pepper Presents Tim Love Lee [ Site ]
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Tim Love Lee, Toph One
Music: jazzy house, downtempo, breaks
Cover: $5 b4 11pm, $10 after

Tim 'Love' Lee's is a production genius with a sense of humor. Hailing from London his funky sound is part porno soundtrack and part breakbeat goodness. Stir in some loops, samples and other creative sounds and you get a lazy, beautiful, beat soup with lots of flavor. His label, Tommy Touch has released Groove Armada, Organic Audio, and Tutto Matto. According to his album, we should now call him Tim “Lone” Lee but I bet he has lots of friends.

Event: White Party
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Marques Wyatt, Juan Mejia
Music: funk, rare groove, breaks
Cover:$5
What is everyone’s obsession with white anyway? It’s such a boring color and plus you get drunk and spill vodka/cran all over your outfit. (Maybe that’s just me.) Regardless, this party featuring that super house freak from LA, Marques Wyatt asks that your wear white. The music is sure to impress, however.

Event: Wicked
Venue: DNA
DJ's: Q-Burn’s Abstract Message [ Site ], Jeno, Garth
Music: house
Cover: $15
Q-Burns abstract Message AKA Michael Donaldson Is considered one of America’s top DJs. While touring regularly across the country and throughout the world with names such as Fatboy Slim, Josh Wink, Chemical Brothers, Gus Gus and Lo Fidelity All-Stars, he has also released a slew of 12"s, a compilation album of singles, and his debut album, Feng Shui. If you have to use the word electronica to describe quality pop-oriented dance music that’s what this would be.

Event: The Big Badonkadonk
Venue: Nickie’s BBQ
DJ's: Tom Thump+
Music: drum and bass, soulful house, nu-jazz
Cover: TBA
“Got to have strong legs, hairy as hell, don’t steal my stuff…and gotta have the badonkadonk butt.” If you don’t know what I’m talking about then man, are you missing out. Check out this real audio clip. For those who do know, Tom Thump is going to play the badonkadonk grooves so be prepared to shake it.

Event: Porno Star
Venue: 550 Barneveld
DJ's: David Coleman & Sen Sei, David Garcia, St. John, BB Hayes, Demilo, Apollo, Vin Roc, Kleen, J Boogie, Jaysen Vasquez, Reckless Ryan +
Music: house, hip-hop, disco
Cover: $20
Yes, it’s another rave event celebrating Porn-stardom. Oh and you are supposed to wear white at this one too. The flyer says “party like you’re in Las Vegas and act like you’re in LA.” If I party like I’m in the Bronx and act like I’m from NJ will I get thrown out? About 20 DJs play house and hip-hop until the morning.

Music: deep house
Cover: $15 presale Buy Tickets
Similar to the mega 80’s era of the past, we once again have a president who supports nuclear weapons over environmental issues. The only good thing that came out of that decade was art and fashion. So let’s celebrate it! Party- people dressed like 80’s rock stars get express line entry and access to the VIP area. There will also be a rock star fashion show... [ Renovation Buy Fashiono Show ticket @ discoutned rate] Pure fashion-tainment, exotic dancers and other live performances. The music is mostly house but I wouldn’t be surprised if a Eurythmics song snuck in there.

Event: Qool
Venue: DNA Lounge
DJ's: Seven, Mark Musselman, Taj, DJ Spesh
Music: deep house, progressive house
Cover: $10

Damn their qool. This is the official after party for Metropolis (the rave in 3Com Park). If you wear some orange to this event, you get in half price. Wear ALL orange and get in for free.
