Carnaval 2009
Every year Carnaval fills the Mission with Latin American and Caribbean flavors for California's largest multi-cultural event. This cherished spring ritual celebrates life with a weekend full of music, drumming, dancing, artistry from Bay Area residents, and tasty cuisine. Three stages with non-stop live music will feature dozens of bands jamming everything from samba and Caribbean to funk and rock 'n' roll. This year's theme is "Roots of Revival: Seeds of Change" and the grande parade starts Sunday morning at 9:30 at the corner of 24th and Bryant streets. One of the best known San Francisco DJs, Miguel Migs, has helped shape the West Coast's deep house sound with his smooth, sensuous, Salted musical style. It's hard not to dig the sounds Migs after you hear him take the dancefloor on a cruise through funky and soulful grooves. His 2009 release, "More Things (The Unreleased Remixes)" includes a Migs remix of "Get Down" that gives off a classic Miguel vibe. (EB)

The new wave/electro-pop troupe Fischerspooner was formed in New York Ciy in 1998 and has come to incorporate multimedia, strange handmade costumes, dancing, and performance art. Originally a duo, the group is now over 20 performers, mostly guest vocalists and dancers. Their tour supports their new album "Entertainment," an album full of fresh sounds, with an electric stage show bridging the worlds of art and pop. (JE)

Freeform v. Dubalicious has another amazing night of dancing in the works. Not a band, but an agreement between two friends to create something that heals their beat-driven hearts and pleases their rock n' roll souls, Ghostland Observatory describe their sound as "a robot making love to a tree!" and are certainly as fun to watch. Their blend of electro, rock, and funk culminate in a sound that is both past influence and present inspiration. We caught their unique and uncompromising show at Treasure Island Music Festival 2007, and have been seeking them out ever since! (JE)

Bobbito and Rich Medina will be sharing the limelight tonight under this incredible double billing. Bobbito, as a member of the Rock Steady Crew, co-hosted "The Stretch Armstong and Bobbito Show" which was responsible for introducing hip hop artists such as: Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and MF Doom. Riding co-pilot is Rich Medina, who's been selling out shows from here to Philly to Miami and still holding down his weekly residency at N.Y. hotspot, APT. You might think you know hip hop but chances are these guys know much more. These crate diggers are about to drop jaws with their skills and drawls with their talent. (WF)
