For the last month you've hollered, shouted, raved and roared for your favorite beat-masters, so without further adieu, Nitevibe is proud to introduce San Francisco's 7th Annual Top10 DJs for 2009. Coming in at number ten is an old-time favorite Mr Green Gorilla Lounge, M3. Earning the ninth spot for pushing the boundaries of breaks is Adam Ohana aka An-Ten-Nae. Sliding into the eighth position is a new comer to the poll, Canadian transplant and house-maestro Fred Everything. The seventh spot is owned by Taj, a steady SF favorite for his powerful progressive tracks and loyal following. Returning to the Top10 is a true SF house legend - Mr. Julius Papp. Making his 3rd consecutive appearnce, Syd Gris continues to climb up in the poll to the fifth spot. The master of SF's underground scene is a tech-house rebel - Rooz - climbes up to fourth. No stranger to SF's Top10 is our very own David Harness who's holding on to his number three spot. And finally, two of the most voted DJs in the history of this poll, held on to their familiar one & two spots - your top DJs Miguel Migs and Mark Farina. Your entire Top30 is listed below. Asian American Film Festival
After a quarter century of celebrating and promoting Asian filmmaking, the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF) continues to be the nation's largest, internationally acclaimed, showcase for new Asian American and Asian films. The 27th SFIAAFF kicks off this Thursday with a screening of Lee Yoon-ki's "My Dear Enemy" at the Castro Theatre, and an opening night bash at the Asian Art Museum. For the next 10 days, the festival will screen over 100 feature length films and shorts followed by Q & A sessions with filmmakers and cast members, including Academy Award winning director Ang Lee, who will speak after his 2007 film "Lust, Caution" on March 17 at the Wheeler Auditorium in Berkeley. Plastic Camera Show
Contrary to popular belief, you don't need an expensive camera to take a beautiful picture. For RayKo Photo Center's 2nd Annual International Juried Plastic Camera Show the more obsolete, flawed, and lo-tech, the better! While reviewing over 400 submissions, the Juror, Ann Jastrab MFA, painstakingly narrowed down the acceptances to 150 artists (Best in Show wins $250). Highlighted in the exhibition are three California photographers, Roy Berkowitz, Michael Emery, and Aline Smithson, who have been using plastic camera imagery for nearly 30 years. If Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem had a lovechild, it may sound something like MSTRKRFT, the dark disco pet project from Death From Above 1979's Jesse F. Keeler and producer Al-P. Complete with vocodors and handclaps, this Toronto-based duo makes music rife with chunky synths and house beats, culminating in a euphoric blend that leans heavily toward the dancefloor. With a vision of "bigger, louder, dumber," they're a force to be reckoned with and nothing if not fun. (JE)
