Cancer: When it comes to finding true love, you are the master of cluelessness. Fortunately, the Supreme Court has recently outlawed the execution of retarded people, so you'll live to see another day. A Sun/Moon conjunction early in the week could inspire you to go about romance a different way. Don't attempt to move your furniture in to your new love's apartment on just the second date. And don't sit moping by the phone until Ned the Narcissist or Selma the Self-Absorbed deigns to call you. You can do better.Click here for other signs

Tranquility Bass is a lovely way to go about your evening as you hear everything from live experimental jazz to ambient and mid-tempo house grooves. Somehow they manage to mix it all in with some vintage recordings and film scores – clever bastards. This week is SOMAFM night with DJ Pie and DJ Sorted.

Event: Addicted
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: Adrian C, Centipede
Music: hip hop, electro
Cover: 2 for $5 b4 11pm
“Hotel, motel, Holiday Inn/If your girl starts acting up then you take her friend.” That song, “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang should be the theme of this party and here’s why: 1) Addicted is all about hip-hop classics, 2) Backflip is at the hotel/motel Phoenix, 3) your girl and her friend can get in 2 for $5! This is fun! I just may throw Rapper’s Delight lyrics in all the picks today. Really I’m going to.

Event: The Loop
Venue: The Galaxy
DJ's: Delivery, Kelsone, Pash, Makintosh, Lite
Music: hip-hop, breakbeats
Cover: free b4 10pm, $5 after
“By the way baby what's your name/ Said I go by the name of Lois Lane/ And you could be my boyfriend you surely can/ Just let me quit my boyfriend called Superman…” That superhero night called “Sound Defenders” has morphed into a new night called The Loop. Same style hip-hop and breaks, same great DJs, different clever name.

Is it Tuesday and you have that yucky no-dance feeling already? Taboo will take care of that problem quickly, right!. Get your bootyshake on with the soulful sound of David Harness. “Now I’m feelin' the highs and ya feelin’ the lows/ The beat starts gettin' into your toes/ Ya start popping ya fingers and stomping your feet/ And moving your body while you’re sitting in your seat/ And then damn! ya start doing the freak/ I said damn! right outta your seat…”

Event: Dig Deep
Venue: Buzz 9
DJ's: Scott Carrelli, Efrem, oolong
Music: house
Cover: $3 after 10pm
Hi. So everyone knows that Dig Deep moved from the Blind Tiger and is on the second and fourth Wednesday at Buzz 9 right? Good. This week Scott Carrelli guest stars from Looq Records. Expect a deep tech-house slightly progressive groove. Scott will be doing his thing similar to Hank. “Well so far you’ve heard my voice but I brought two friends along/ And next on the mike is my man Hank/ Come on, Hank, sing that song…”

Event: L’ Originale
Venue: Rosewood
DJ's: Herve, Daymeetrius, Jerry Ross
Music: French and American hip-hop
Cover: TBA
Tired of getting jiggy to the same old shit? Check out something French besides fries. America still gets top-billin' within the hip hop scene, but some of the European stuff is aiight. At least it’s original. “When the sucker MCs try to chump my style/ I let them know that I’m versatile/ I got style finesse and a little black book/ That's filled with rhymes and I know you want to look/ But there's a thing that separates you from me/ And that's called originality…”

Event: Dream
Venue: Cloud 9
DJ's: Jeno, Paul Hemming
Music: deep house
Cover: $5
Always nice to check out larger name DJs for $5 even if you have to put up with the stuck-up door guys. Jeno of the Wicked crew and Paul Hemming of Zen City Records fulfill all your dreams of hearing deep house on a Wednesday. You’ll sleep better at night after dancing. That’s a scientific fact. (Providing you pass up the blow of course) “And while ya sleepin’ ya start to dream/ And thinking how ya danced on the disco scene…”

Event: True Skool
Venue: Storyville
DJ's: Afrika Bambaataa, Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist , Clockwork, Pauleytek
Music: electro, house
Cover: $15
OK let’s take a musical history moment. The Sugarhill Gang may have had the first rap song to hit the Top 40 charts, but Afrika Bambaataa ruled the underground paving the way for all of the electronic music we know and love today such as Detroit techno and Chicago house. This DJ/producer essentially invented electro in 1982 with the song “Planet Rock” which blended hip-hop beats with techno pop like “Kraftwerk” from Germany. He also worked with George Clinton, UB40, Bootsy Collins, and Boy George. Before his electro sound became famous, Afrika Bambaataa organized block parties and break dancing competitions in the Bronx and eventually formed the Zulu Nation, a group of like-minded Afrocentric artists and musicians like Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers and Queen Latifah.

Event: Staple Primer
Venue: Sit!o (formally the Up and Down)
DJ's: Markie Mark, DJ Iz, Fil Latorre, David Javate
Music: house
Cover: $10
The Staple crew, who you know from their monthly Endup events, bursts with new tech-house flavor at that rejuvenated Up and Down Club every second/fourth Thursday. I always love the DJs that the Staple crew brings through and this party is no different as Markie Mark and DJ Iz guest star. This event deserves some of my favorite Rapper’s Delight lyrics. “I don’t mean to brag I don’t mean to boast/But we like hot butter on our breakfast toast /Rock it up baby bubbah baby bubbah to the boogie da bang bang da boogie/To the beat beat, its so unique/ Come on everybody and dance to the beat…”

Event: All I want is Stereo
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Re-Pete, Lalo, Leonard, Carlos Gibbs, Grant Dell
Music: deep house, tech house
Cover: $5 b4 11pm, $7 after
Here is a nicely kept secret for the city dwellers. On the second Thursdays of the month lies this party thrown by Stereo Foundation, Moulton Studios (just got Urb's next 100), Deep House Project and Ruby Skye. It's like a special meeting of SF's house music authorities. You can enjoy this elegant venue sans the obnoxious weekend crowd bumping into you drunk and spilling Heinekin on your shoes. Half the normal price and the DJ lineup makes me want to wear glitter!

Event: Dark Matter Mechasoul
Venue: 26 Mix
DJ's: (Rotating) Audio Angel, Blaktroniks, Mikey, Megatron, Scott Edmonds
Music: melodic techno, nu-jazz, Afrobeat, jazzy house
Cover: TBA
This is the second installment of this new monthly. Dark Matter features local stars who celebrate dark matter and experimental yet melodic jazz-inspired sounds. Resident Scott Edmonds reportedly had this to say on the event: “I’m gonna freak ya here I’m gonna freak ya there/ I’m gonna move you outta this atmosphere…”

Event: Lo-Rise Motel
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: Solar, Greg Eversoul, DJ Seven
Music: house
Cover: $5 b4 11pm
This weekly Backflip gig engineered by DJ Seven and Greg Eversoul always has an impressive lineup and a crowd that’s there to get their groove on to respectable house music. There is a secret password to get in to the Lo-Rise Motel, however. Remember to repeat the following to the door guy: “Ya go hotel motel whatcha gonna do today (say what?)/ Ya say I’m gonna get a fly girl gonna get some spankin’ drive off in a def oj/ everybody go, hotel motel Holiday inn…”

Happy Bastille Weekend! “Ya rockin' to the rhythm, shake your derriere/ Ya rockin' to the beat without a care/ With the sureshot MCs for the affair…” Dimitri from Paris needs no introduction but you know I’m gonna give you one anyway. On the scene in the 1980’s Dimitri started off as a radio DJ for French radio 7. His reputation led him to DJing shows for fashion glitterati like Chanel, Lagerfeld and Gaultier. He began producing and releasing EPs in the mid 90’s and furthered his career by remixing artists like Björk, the Brand New Heavies, New Order and James Brown. His mostly mid-tempo sound is inspired by the faux-jazz lounge sound of the early 1960’s and 70’s disco, exemplified by albums like the “Disco Forever” box set and a “Night at the Playboy Mansion”. Finally, this is the Flyer Of The Week!

Event: Sonic presents Christoper Lawrence & DJ Icey

Originally part of SF’s Funky Tekno Tribe, DJ Dan has become quite a celebrity known for his creative mixes and funky house and breaks, he travels internationally to play clubs, festivals and raves. To Dan I dedicate these important words: “It was twelve o'clock one Friday night /I was rockin' to the beat and feelin' all right/ Everybody was dancin' on the floor/ Doin all the things they never did before/ And then this fly fly girl with a sexy lean/ She came into the bar, she came into the scene/ As she traveled deeper inside the room/All the fellas checked out her white Sasoons…”

Event: Twice as Nice Presents DJ Swingsett
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Swingsett, Said, tom Thump, Cool Chris

DJ Swingsett has been playing over ten years including the famous NYC party (I used to go every week) Concrete Jungle. Some highlights include playing in London with Gilles Peterson and Mixmaster Morris' weekly in Brixton. He opened up for Roni Size in Miami, played The Beta Lounge in SF with the Jazzanova DJ's and DJ Krush, Skylab in NYC and toured Europe with wife Lisa Shaw (of Naked Music). His style has recently extended into the nu-jazz movement including rare funk, soul and hip-hop. This party also includes a dope art and fashion show see Buzz section for details.

Event: Co-Ed Presents Angel Alanis
Venue: Sno-Drift
DJ's: Angel Alanis (Chicago), Ellen Ferrato, Solomon, Keebo
Music: tech house, hip-hop
Cover: ladies free b4 10pm
Angel Alanis headlines at this special one off. This Chicago DJ and producer ranges from a dubby house sound to tech-house. He has released over thirty records in the past few years and over twenty remixes. His albums won rave reviews by the likes of Dave Angel, Judge Jules, Laidback Luke and Armand Van Helden. His DJing should bring a refreshing sound to the saturated funky house scene in SF.

Event: The Summit
Venue: Club Six
DJ's: Romanowski, Toph One, 100 Proof, Yoshito, pantyROBber, Dr. Dave, Malex +
Music: funky breaks, 2-step, electro, jazzy house, hip-hop, dancehall
Cover: $10
The Summit brings DJs who rarely share the same flyer space together as one nation under a groove playing all funky genres from 2-step to electro. When I asked the promoter, Desi if he could comment on the parties many-genre format, he had this to say: “Skiddlee beebop a we rock a scoobie doo/ And guess what America we love you/ Cause ya rock and ya roll with so much soul/ You could rock till you're a hundred and one years old…”

Event: Roy Davis Jr.
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Roy Davis Jr., M3
Music: soulful house
Cover: $20 Presale Buy Ticket
Reverend Roy Davis Jr. comes to town. (He's not really a reverend but it sounds good with the rest of his name don't you think?) With tracks like "Angel" and "Gabriel" it also fits his style. This Chicago producer calls his music "soul electrica". We're talking about some gospel inspired house anthems that will have you high-fiving God. Roy has been producing records over a decade and is considered one of the top producers in the house scene. He has also done countless remixes for artists like Gus Gus, Eric Benet & Faith Evans, Terry Dexter, Mary J. Blige and D’Angelo.

Event: Release
Venue: Ten 15
DJ's: D: Fuse, Behrouz, Bruce Parker, Jerry Ross, Rubin Mancias, Preston, Alex Collins, Rafael Fiero
Music: progressive house, trance
Cover: $20
D: Fuse is hot and I don’t just mean his trendy progressive sound. This Texas DJ started making big noise when he opened up for Oakenfold’s tour last year. Can’t you just picture him in his cowboy hat saying,“Well, my name is known all over the world/By all the foxy ladies and the pretty girls…” No? Neither can I but you may want to check out this highly acclaimed DJ anyway. One of his albums (progressive Mix Session 1.0) was a live set recorded at Ten 15 Folsom. Was that you screaming in the background on his record?

Event: Organic
Venue: Hotel Ibiza

Music: deep house, tech house, downtempo
Cover: Free
Did I hear that correctly? Is this party free? We all get to go in the twenty-person hot tub and rave all night to house music in a highly elaborate and beautiful atmosphere at Hotel Ibiza for free? That’s sort of like “a can of beer that's sweeter than honey/ Like a millionaire that has no money/ Like a rainy day that is not wet/ Like a gambling’ fiend that does not bet/Like Dracula with out his fangs/ Like the boogie to the boogie without the boogie bang…”

Event: Strawberry
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Deep Dickollective with Hanifah Walidah, Vin Roc, Lady Base
Music: hip-hop
Cover: $5 b4 11pm

Strawberry, Strawberry is not the neighborhood ho as a certain NWA song will have you believe, it’s the neighborhood hip-hop monthly that goes until 4am at the Endup! When asked how he manages to rock the SF hip-hop scene so consistently, The promoter Toph One, said these informative comments: “I go to the halls and then ring the bell/ Because I am the man with the clientele/ And if ya ask me why I rock so well /A big bang! I got clientele…” Oh, of course.

Event: Zodiac
Venue: Studio Z
DJ's: Matmos, Jeff Chandler, Joseph Lee, Solar, Discovery, Travis, Monkeyboy
Music: deep house, ambient
Cover: Free b4 11pm, $15 w/ flyer

SF’s own, Matmos is comprised of the experimental production duo, M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel. What do I mean by experimental? How about making an entire album with sampled sounds from a surgery in an operating room? Using samplers, analogue keyboards, field recordings and guitars, Matmos make atmospheric electronica. They recently toured the world opening for Bjork. Remixing credits include Bjork, Kid 606, and Otomo Yoshihide. They have also worked with Lesser, Labradford, Bjork, Matthew Herbert and the Kronos Quartet.

Music: house

“Now there's a time to laugh a time to cry/ A time to live and a time to die/ A time to break and a time to chill/ To act civilized or act real ill…” I’d say the latter is appropriate here. It’s time to act extremely ill (that means party in case you forgot your 80’s lingo!) There are all kinds of things to celebrate at this 2nd Sunday. First, Atom Palmer from Miami headlines. It is also the CD release party for Julius Papp AND it’s Norman Stradley’s 1000th performance! Do you think he’s counting the house parties in high school? Party starts at noon.
