Edwardian Ball Weekend 2009
Edward Gorey's illustrated books, with their vaguely ominous air and ostensibly Edwardian settings, have long had a cult following. Their macabre themes and rather dreary plots give a distinct dark edge to what otherwise might be considered children's literature--which is perhaps why San Francisco, a city full of playful yet mischievous revellers, has devoted an entire weekend of art, music, theater, fashion, and technology to paying homage to the offbeat imaginings of the man himself. Hosts/creators Rosin Coven partner their pagan lounge music with Vau de Vire Society's avant-caberet to bring a Gorey story to life amongst a bevy of dark parlour, circus vaudvillian, burlesque, beautiful freaks bringing you three whole days of decadently weird entertainment. Date: Fri 1/23-Sun 1/25, Time: 8pm- til? Place: The Regency Center (Sutter & Van Ness), Cover: $30-35 depending on night, More Info. (JE)
