The End of the Universe & Beyond!
Club Townsend is closing its doors after thirteen years of operation. Rumors have been running rampant about the final weekend being a 96-hour Roman style bacchanalia that would rave on till the last person left or fell over! Not so, according to sources at Townsend. There are two amazing parties occurring but they will have a beginning and an end unfortunately. The first event is the “Closing Party” being thrown by Electric and Loveworks. The party, which includes super talent like Derrick Carter, Doc Martin and Miguel Migs, will open adjoining doors with the neighboring King Street Garage. This event starts at 9pm and goes until 7am. Saturday’s event is the final Universe party and last party at Townsend truly marking the end of an era. The other historical weekly, Pleasurdome (started in 1992) held it’s final event last Sunday during gay pride weekend. More...

Event: Rhythm Riot
Venue: Tunnel Top
DJ's: AM Radio, Stellar Trax
Music: ska, Afrobeat, rocksteady, rare grooves
Cover: Free
I have to give it to peeps who try to pull off a new Monday party. The only successful Monday events are crazy late-night-house-music-dance-parties aimed at ravers without day jobs. However, there is one other formula that works. I call it the “2nd happy hour syndrome.” This is when 9-5ers hit happy hour to relieve stress only to realize an hour is not gonna do it. Enter the Tunnel Top for round two! Starting at 9pm, hear soul, reggae and percussive beats as you slowly become inappropriate with your co-workers. The Rhythm Riot has been incited.

Event: Sumo
Venue: The Top
DJ's: Doc Fu and guests
Music: hip-hop, dancehall
Cover: $6
Some say this spot is blown. I say it’s the best consistent Monday night party I’ve seen. You cannot expect it to remain the coolest little hip-hop secret forever. Just do this party a favor: DO come to Sumo for the great classics and underground sounds, DO NOT go there with five of your friends from the Marina and stand around waiting to be noticed as you secretly wish they would play the latest Nelly track.

Event: Mayonnaise [ Site ]
Venue: Skylark
DJ's: Seven, Melyss, Tonic, Chonky-T
Music: house
Cover: Free
According to my old roommate Gus, “Duke’s Mayonnaise” from Kentucky is the best spread able condiment this world has to offer. However, when it comes to Tuesday night house-parties called Mayonnaise, the party at Skylark is the best (and um the only possible option) in my book. DJ Seven guest stars this week. Check out the cute website for pictures and info on the Mayo DJs.

Event: Wanderlust
Venue: Rosewood
DJ's: Tyler Stone, Patrick
Music: downtempo, jazzy house
Cover: Free
Fancy people wear sexy backless things and sip chocolate martinis while listening to sexy bossa nova flavored beats with back. This is a nice little place to get to know a date. This intimate wooden-walled venue is gorgeous inside but lacking a hot tub. It just seems like a nice lil’ hot tub in the corner would really do well here. What do you think?

Event: Phuturo
Venue: The Top
DJ's: 4Real, Rando, and Presha
Music: drum n’ bass, breaks
Cover: $5
Every Tuesday at the Top it’s in your face drum n’ bass with your resident selectors and surprise guests. Sit down for a drink and absorb rumbling beats until the only dilemma left on your mind is whether or not you should continue to sit there with your ass vibrating, or get up and dance

Event: Spundae & Liquified present Independence Day
Venue: Ten15
DJ's: Dave Seaman, Terry Mullan, Spesh & Jondi
Music: progressive house, funky house
Cover: $10 presale [Buy Tickets]
No work on Thursday people, that’s what I’m talking about. Now sew a cute halter dress out of an American flag and let’s rave for independence! Dave Seaman from the UK’s Global Underground and Renaissance America has produced big names like Kylie, The Pet Shop Boys, Take That and Blur. Dave has been DJing for ten years and is known for his Global Underground mixes but did you know he was also once the editor for Mixmag? But wait there’s more! If you act now you can also check out Terry Mullan a Chicago native playing hard funky disco and Chicago inspired beats. Qool’s Spesh and Jondi take on afterhour duties.

Event: Indulgence
Venue: Starlight Room
DJ's: Re-Pete, Bruce, China Doll
Music: funk, soul, disco, R&B, house, trance
Cover: $10 b4 10PM, $15 after
This popular sophisticated weekly goes patriotic. Check out the special all women trance dance group called “Moana and the Lovenuts” doing a special July 4th performance. I wonder if they will be twirling batons like I did in the town parade when I was ten? -- Only one way to find out. Re-Pete guest stars with your favorite house anthems along with residents Bruce and China Doll.

Event: Seance
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: Mark Farina, Foxee
Music: funky house
Cover: TBA
Mark Farina comes to Séance and you better bet your sweet gypsy ass it’s going to be difficult to get in. I’ve seen Mark 12 times so I will not be touching this crowded joint with a ten foot martini glass. But I know you party people cannot resist so consult your crystal ball before entering Séance, and see if it won’t predict a nice smooth early entrance for you.

Event: Slow Burning
Venue: Arrow Bar
DJ's: Star Eyes, Lombardi, and surprise guest
Music: 2-step, ambient, breakbeats, Brit-pop, downtempo, hip hop, electro, rock, nu-jazz
Cover: $3 b4 11pm
This party is so popular that even after the amp completely blew and there was no music for half an hour, no one left. A packed bar with clever drunken haircuts just stood around yelling witty comments at each other "torn up from the florn up" as they were. Finally someone retrieved a compact stereo system from his house. The bad electro-inspired 80’s pop hits resumed and we all got to hear "Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam" for the first time in fourteen years. The music changes throughout the evening though, that’s the point. So come on, let’s piss off the DJs by requesting intelligent dance music all night.

Event: Signature
Venue: Harry Denton’s Rouge
DJ's: Rooz, Ecko, Bardiar, Mike Manssor
Music: house, downtempo
Cover: $20
Firecrackers may be illegal in San Francisco County, but fire eating is apparently still ok. See professionals munching on fire snacks along with exotic dancers and “fresh exotic fruit”. Will these items be combined in some creative way, or are they separate party features? This, I don’t know but what I do know is that the individual with the most unique or “signature’ outfit will be rewarded $1000!

DJ's: Solar, Russell Vargas, Swing, LuLu, Unity, Christian Clark

Cover: Free
Open house presents this new weekly where you can breathe easy all damn night because there is NO COVER on July 4th. How can a lineup that includes the likes of Panhandle Record’s Solar and DJ Russell Vargas be free? We’re just damn lucky I guess. Stop asking questions and let’s freak out to some independent house music until we see stars (and stripes).

Event: n:Code
Venue: DNA Lounge
DJ's: DJ Fugu, Lisa Fox, Chameleon, S. Ghael, Sage
Music: techno, breaks, industrial
Cover: $5 b4 11pm, $7 after
Um yeah… Some parties say things like, “Plus a 3 hr. set from DJ Blank!” or “Plus drink specials all night!” But it’s not often that you hear, “Plus dueling inflatable gladiator-monsters!” You don’t hear that often right? I’m not crazy, n: Code is crazy. It happens every week in a special dark and sparkling corner of reality called DNA.

Event: Faith
Venue: 715 Harrison
DJ's: Blackstone, Ruben Mancias, Jay-R & Larry

Cover: free b4 10:30pm, $10 after
It’s raining men, hallelujah! This party for the boys rocks out until 2:30 am. DJ Blackstone is one of SF’s best house DJs in my opinion and with Ruben Mancias there too? There will be no parking on this dance floor, honey!

This amazing producer/DJ duo has actually collaborated with or remixed the artists mentioned above. Their first full length album, "Satta" was one of the most celebrated downtempo releases last year. This marks Boozoo Bajou's first West Coast appearance. They are currently on tour which began at the renown Montreal Jazz Festival. As usual Blasthaus bringing us the artists who everyone is about to fall in love with.

What came first the psycho or the funk? The psychofunkodiscodelic crew are too preoccupied to ponder such mysteries. They’re busy putting together funkragious house parties with great vibes, live extra action marching bands, cool visuals, and incredible DJ talent. There will also be a book signing for Eddy Cotton’s new novel “Hobo” from 8-9pm.

Snap, is not all you will want to do. Prepare to clap, dance, sing and get down when DJ Johnny Fiasco is playing. The Chicago native has a background playing guitar with influences that range from Talking Heads to Herbie Hancock. His sound really took off after working with DJ Cajmere’s acclaimed label Cajual in 2000. Since then Johnny has produced, remixed and mixed for several labels and worked with artists including Gloria Estefan, K.D. Lang, Soulstice, Mark Farina, Donald Glaude and DJ Colette. There will also be live jazz upstairs in the jungle room and giveaways by Doubledown Recordings and Lowdown music all night long.

The Compression crew actually emerges from the Cellar for a special one-off summer session battle against the Sleeveless crew. Thunderous bass is eminent, loud drums guaranteed, breakbeats abound. I love when DJs battle, wouldn't it be cool if there were a fight?!

Event: Staple
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: John Tejada [Audio], Fil Latorre, David Javate
Music: deep house
Cover: $10 before 11pm, $13 after

You may not have heard of John Tejada who resides in LA (born in Vienna) but that’s because you don’t buy records. This is one very truly talented producer who started off making techno but can now be found venturing into drum n’ bass and some gorgeous downtempo. His mom, an acclaimed Soprano even sings on some of his tracks! John doesn’t do anything less than perfect so you can expect an exceptional night of music at Staple. Here is a sample of his more up tempo sound.

Event: Hot Grits

For those of you who are tired of 'fast food' hip hop and crave a little substance in their musical diet, the Basque Hotel at 15 Romolo gives you HOT GRITS! I love how that sounds. You may want to try saying it out loud because it’s so fun to say. Try it. HOT GRITS! DJ Daymitreeus of L'Orignale serves up a sizzling Sunday plate of classic hip hop with side orders of R&B, Nu, and Neo that will stick to your ribs. P.S. Romolo is a tiny dead end street off Broadway, It’s difficult to find but maybe if you stand on Broadway and yell HOT GRITS! really loud, someone (perhaps Leavy who contributed to this pick) will hear you and lead you to the bar.

Event: Give

Event: Rebirth
Venue: 330 Rich
DJ's: Henry and guests
Music: hip-hop, soul

This is one of the longest running hip-hop parties in the Bay Area and I’m not talking about 22 year olds in baseball hats and sneakers. A sophisticated crowd dressed to kill gets their dance floor bump and grind on, sips martinis and chills like the smooth playas they are. Dress code strictly enforced.

Continued - The End of the Universe...

Like Pleasuredome, Universe began as a gay dance party in 1994, but with stars like Frankie Knuckles, Grace Jones, Chaka Khan, Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper, Little Louie Vega, Ru Paul and the B-52s making regular appearances, it quickly became the hottest West Coast party on every party person’s hit list regardless of sexual preference. It still is after nine years!

Why is this important part of clubbing history shutting down? According to sources in the Townsend office, the club was sold two years ago and the lease is up this month. There are no plans at this time for trying to recreate the Townsend experience in any other venue but I have a feeling we have not heard the last of these epic parties.

The high profile events over the last two months seem to be an attempt to wean followers off the beloved venue by bringing in some of the acts that made the club what it is today. Cyndi Lauper, Ce Ce Peniston, Dead or Alive and Mark Almond include some of the recent shows leading up to the very last party this Saturday. Say farewell to Club Townsend on Saturday from 9pm until noon Sunday. Some of the DJs include Jamie J, Phil B, David Harness, Matthew Baker, Blackstone and Pete Avila. See Friday and Saturday picks for complete information: [Site]
