Halflife
One Year Anniversary
Venue: An Sibin
DJ's: Rob F, Impulse, M, Kryptyk,
Sinseer, Aneurysm
Music: drum n’ bass
Cover: TBA
In nuclear physics “half-life” is the time required
for half of a radioactive substance to disintegrate by radioactive
decay or be eliminated by natural processes. So if this big bangin’
drum and bass night is celebrating a year (in half-life terms)
this shit should be going on for at least another year. Congratulations
Halflife! Special guests Rob F and Impulse “blow up”
the spot this week. (These puns are really getting to you, aren't’t
they?)
Event:
Minimal
Monday
Venue: Hush Hush
DJ's: Joe Rice, Catweasel, Terrac,
Chris Burfine, Forest Green
Music: minimal techno, downtempo
Cover: Free
Minimal is beautiful because it allows you to hear some beautiful
sounds without a bunch of unnecessary crap thrown in the background
to fill up space. It’s like the bare essence of a track
without the frills and stuff. Because you really don’t need
a lot of extra crap on Monday anyway. Let us simplify with straight
beats and straight whiskey at Hush Hush.

Event:
Addicted
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: Adrian C, Centipede
Music: hip-hop, electro, club classics
Cover: $10, 2 for $5
Addicted happens every week. They just can’t stop. A well-dressed
crowd with a dirty attitude gets down with some electro, hip-hop
classics and other flavors of funk because they won’t stop…they
can’t stop…the body rock.
Event:
Tapestry
Venue: Lingba
DJ's: John-Paul with rotating guests,
Scott Edmonds, Push, Wisdom
Music: techno, hip-hop, house, breakbeats
Cover: Free
Yeah so basically these guys are playing whatever they want and
having fun doing it. “Don’t box me in man, I have
no genre, no style to define for you. I just don’t see music
that way.” This is the attitude of most musicians. Marketing
people put labels on things not artists. Rise up and fight the
revolution. I have a feeling there are going to be a lot more
of these mash-up no category nights. Don’t you?
Event:
The
Loop
Venue: Galaxy
DJ's: Delivery, Kelsone, Pash, Makintosh,
Lite
Music: hip-hop, funk
Cover: $3
So that superhero night, Sound Defenders has morphed into something
new – same bat time, same bat place and starring some of
the same characters. It’s called “The Loop”
as in, we’re keeping you in it. Music includes hip-hop,
funk, reggae, soul and other beat-heavy material utilizing breaks,
samples and of course the infamous loop/the infamous loop/the
infamous loop/the infamous loop/the infamous….

Slow
Burning
Venue: Arrow Bar
DJ's: Lambchop, JBlack,
Music: 2-step, ambient, breakbeats,
brit-pop, downtempo, hip hop, house, rock, nu-jazz
Cover: $3 b4 11pm
God I want to hate this new ultra cool bar, but I can’t.
I am a victim of it’s asymmetrical electro-flavored hype.
Just look at all these musical genres, are they serious? Flyer
magazine’s new weekly “Slow Burning” puts an
end to your same-shit-all night-long-blues by featuring more musical
styles than Amoeba Records. You could hear hip-hop, electro bits,
dub, all sorts of breakbeats, The Smiths, dancehall classics,
mid ‘90s anthems and the list goes on. “Drunken good
times and fucking great music.” That seems to be the only
consistent unifying theme.
Event:
Dig
Deep
Venue: Buzz 9
DJ's: Efrem, Oolong
Music: deep house
Cover: $3 after 10pm
Dig Deep delves into some new digs. Recently leaving Blind Tiger,
Buzz 9 is the perfect spot to hear some deep house on a Wednesday
and it’s underground, quite literally. The basement at Buzz
9 is a special wondrous cozy cavern great for dancing or not.
This pick is dedicated to Dylan who was just asking me where to
find quality house for cheap midweek.
Event:
Red
Wine Social
Venue: Dalva
DJ's: Toph, Tiki Jim and surprise
special guests
Music: house, electro, funk
Cover: TBA
This night is crazier than a high school house party while your
parents are away. But instead of hearing Whitesnake your hearing
the best funky eclectic beats from DJs like Polywog, DJ Pause,
Toph One and Kemrex … OK, so sometimes you hear Whitesnake.
It doesn't’t really matter after so much red wine does it?
I got so wasted last week I came home with my arms fully tagged
up with a sharpie. Everyone was doing it at the time but when
you wake up in the morning to get coffee in front of you r roommates
you feel like a real ass. This is the spot where your favorite
DJs, graffiti artists, janitors and editors conspire to take over
the world.

Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Mark Farina, Simon, John Howard,

Music: house
Cover: TBA
What else can Kit Kat do to celebrate their 13th Anniversary besides
rock it like they do every week? Extend their hours! That’s
right 10pm to 6am for this night only. So let me ask you this:
If you usually leave Kit Kat at 4am, hit a warehouse party until
9am, then hit a bar after that until 11am and sleep until 7pm,
will the whole after hour schedule also be affected by Kit Kat’s
extended hours? Mark Farina guest-stars on this edition of the
Loveboat.
Event:
Nu
W
Venue: W Hotel
DJ's: Consuelo, Tom Thump
Music: downtempo, sexy house
Cover: TBA
Oozing with sex this party is. Yes, this is the spot to meet up
with that person you are having an affair with. It’s at
a hotel, it’s a beautiful candlelit bar and who is playing
but none other than Consuelo and freakin’ Tom Thump. Those
guys are like mood specialists playing the sexy soulful jazzy
beats you wish were the soundtrack to your life all the time.

Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Smash, Rasoul
Music: deep house
Cover: $5 b4 10pm
Once upon a time in the mid nineties (before St. Germain) acid
jazz became very popular. A legendary party emerged that propelled
acid jazz and trip-hop into the eyes of many adoring fans. That
party (Thursday nights in Manhattan) was called Giant Step after
the label. DJ Smash was one of the DJs at this event along with
Ron Trent. Smash has compiled two amazing compilations for Blue
Note in which artists like Todd Terry or Tribe Called Quest remix
jazz artists like Ronny Jordan or Medeski, Martin and Wood. In
addition to DJ Smash are the sexy funky sounds of Naked Music’s
Rasoul. You don’t want to miss a combo like this.

roller skating rink and started off spinning hip-hop (apparent
in his unique style). Now Jon travels the world DJing and repping
his record label and numerous releases showing the world a little
something about east coast deep house.

Music: hip-hop, dancehall, rare groove
Cover: $10
Did you ever see that Will Smith video for the song “Summertime”
where folks be cruising’ by in cars and hollering at the
opposite sex? Everyone is dancing to a DJ and a sound system set
up in the middle of the street, families out there eating ice
cream and whatnot. This is a block party -- Brooklyn (or Philly)
style. Soul Kitchen’s Summer Scene is all about that vibe.
There will also be an art show, a fashion show, a B-boy competition,
food and forties available too…ahhh just like home. (Please
note, Soul Kitchen is usually on Thursday but this special edition
is on Friday.)
